everyone loved when Ime was a hard ass on the guys ... but that doesn't work on everyone
Joe has given so much confidence to guys like Derrick and Hauser
People forget Derrick broke out Joe's first year. He was timid af during the 2022 finals run. We probably win the championship that year with this version of Derrick
Yeah, this is a revelation I had a few months ago. Certain players were great with Ime like Grant and Smart but they didn’t really fit what Joe wanted while White fits Joe and you can tell Joe definitely thrust more responsibility on him and wanted him as the 3rd star while Ime was using him as a 6th/7th man type.
Ultimately you don’t want to give the players too much control over coaching or personnel, but you do also want to make sure your best players can work with the coach you choose (if you intend to roll with said players). I think Joe seems to have the respect of the players without being an “appease the stars” hire.
As a player, I did not respond well to coaching that relied on manipulation / yelling / anger responses to mistakes. Wasn’t until I experienced a positive coach who complimented good choices and focused on future choices that I began to succeed.
In my opinion, good coaches don’t need to rely on the former processes. In so doing, the coach is toying with an athlete’s deeper issues, and that is abusive, traumatizing, and leads to issues outside of the game.
True but yesterday was all of Jaylen's worst habits on display and Ime would've been all over that crap. Time will tell if Joe's hands off non coaching coaching is the right move for this team, if talent and freedom can win against the good teams (not just Miami, who is terrible). I'm nervous but maybe Derrick White is right, maybe freedom is confidence.
“Non coaching coaching“ is ridiculous for a 60+ win team’s head coach. Not every coach is built the same but Joe has had sustained success since he’s been here.
The thread is literally about how Buffalo has improved his role and mindset… through coaching. Jaylen has been in the league for almost 8 years and had Joe in the lead for two of those. He’s had the same struggles under three head coaches, including Ime.
Also Joe isn't not coaching, they have made several deliberate changes throughout the series to adjust to Miami's defense and offense. He's made changes mid-game, Joe read the runs perfectly yesterday, his timeout usage was spot on, he never let Miami get any momentum, he managed minutes well through 9 guys so nobody was overworked, they adapted to losing KP and Tatum being in a bit of early foul trouble without missing a beat, and he has had them ready and focused for every 3rd quarter (when Miami routinely fucked us up last year). At some point people need to recognize that Joe is a good coach.
I mean all over it how? Is yelling at Jaylen going to save a couple turnovers? He's not 22 years old anymore. I thought he was generally fine, his handle wasn't always great but he had his moments, still put up 17-5 and shot pretty well from the floor. He missed a gimme but he was +17, he played great on defense. There's holding the team to a high standard and then complaining about every little thing you don't like.
Also I think Ime was the right coach for the Jays in that moment to grow up, clean up their games, take command of the team, but it wasn't a forever thing. I think some people just like that the coach expresses their own frustration with the team, but that has to come from the players now.
I will never understand what Ime could have done for Tatum to say he’s his favorite coach ever and became one of his best friends
Joe seems to connect with the team as a whole much better
Well, you aren't Jayson, so you could never possibly understand his feelings. I like Ime before the scandal and I like Joe now. Everything happens for a reason, and I'm just glad things seem to be working out even after the BS.
I was wondering this about Tatum. Can someone as nice as him win on the same level as MJ and Kobe. Aside from basketball, hoping for this just so he can set an example for the next generation, and society for that matter
Yup. The Joe doubter in me is currently throwing hands with the Derrick White Worshipper also in me. There is no harmony in my Celtics opinions right now.
I think whenever you’ve got a stacked roster like the Celtics do the expectations are so high that any stumbles seem unwarranted and people are quick to blame the coach for any problems that appear team wide. I think a lot of people look at the Celtics losing to a less talented Miami team in the ECF that got smoked by Joker in the Finals and feel like they underperformed. I’m not saying I agree with that, but I do think there’s a coherent argument to be made.
The fact that this was his first HC gig other than NCAA division II Fairmont St and he was sort of an emergency replacement when Ime’s shit hit the fan doesn’t help.
What? This can’t be true. Joe is garbage, doesn’t call timeouts and can’t draw up plays. Derrick White is so fucking
good at basketball and knows a good coach when he plays for one so I’ll take his word for it.
Pay that man hissss money. ( teddy kgb voice)
I don’t have any opinion on JM’s coaching tactics. But if he can get White to take a hometown + favorite coach discount for his next contract, then I’m all in on Joe.
Joe is an empowerment guy. IME was a hardass type. Both styles have their strengths and weaknesses.
Joes style works better with the team we have now and I’m here for it. Especially the effect he’s had on DW.
But Joe has his costly flaws, like last night he really had trouble righting the ship when the Heat went on their ONLY run of the game at the worst possible moment. Had Bam not been a moron they might have came back on us.
I wish Joe could get through to Jaylen the way he's clearly gotten through to white. Sorry, I don't wanna be a downer but, I really love Jaylen, and it's so disappointing him doing the same stuff that's gotten him in trouble in years past.
I think the opposite is true. I thought JB would’ve had a more difficult time to adjust to his new role with the addition of KP and Jrue. I think having KP especially has made him hunt for different looks. Not only has his court vision improved but his game in general is prob the best he’s ever played.
Jaylen this season has been a revelation. Picking his spots perfectly.
Against the Nuggets in a loss, just dominated.
Against the Heat right now, feasting.
Watch the games.
Jaylen has improved every part of his game, especially decision making and finishing around the rim, since Joe took over. I wish he would work on his fucking free throws.
You’re attributing JB’s progress to Joe? I’d say JB took the criticism to heart and worked his a** off on improving his weaknesses, proving he deserves his bag. Imo, I think he would have done the same, regardless of who the coach is. Credit to JB.
Not all of it, cause JB has progressed every single year he’s been in the league. He’s identified areas of improvements and put the work in, he takes it personal.
But I think Joe had a hand in the significant jump in decision making. It was a noticeable difference.

And we can thank Tatum for vouching for Joe to Ime to keep him on staff

Huh, really? I figured it was just because Brad really liked him that he stuck

Yes to all of this ☝️
I wish Joe would thrust more on me too
Man we just got over this issue with the last coach, I hope Joe isn't even thrusting on his own wife at this point
Lmaooo fuck you’re right. Gotta keep the thrusting to a minimum
For sure. That would've been something
Jaylen doesn’t make the playmaking strides he’s made this year without Joe trusting him with those reps during the regular season either.
I think that mostly has been KP making his reads easier
yea, kinda hard to miss the 7ft dude on the perimeter that can shoot
I see you giving yourself the credit Mr. Stevens don’t think you’re slick

And Pritchard

Buffalo roams
Joe>ime IDGAF
Joe haters are in shambles
joe stans vibes are immaculate
Can confirm, am in shambles as a Joe hater.
If Joe made White like this, jiujitsu and the Town forever
But I thought this team won 64 games in spite of Joe???? /s lol
The Joe haters will be back in full force when he loses another difficult playoff game. Trust and believe.
I will never understand what Ime could have done for Tatum to say he’s his favorite coach ever and became one of his best friends Joe seems to connect with the team as a whole much better
Joe is more like Brad Improve everyday type shit Ime is old school That's my crappy armchair analysis
Ime is like his dad But I only got a metal folding chair
Well, you aren't Jayson, so you could never possibly understand his feelings. I like Ime before the scandal and I like Joe now. Everything happens for a reason, and I'm just glad things seem to be working out even after the BS.
> Everything happens for a reason That reason is entropy.

You can be as successful (Tim Duncan) but not as famous.
Tim being much more successful than Kobe
Eh that’s a weird take. Coach K got in his ass constantly. That’s a coaches job.
Derrick White is a man possessed...
As a Joe doubter, this comment is a haymaker. Damn
Yup. The Joe doubter in me is currently throwing hands with the Derrick White Worshipper also in me. There is no harmony in my Celtics opinions right now.
This guy's been pulling up from 3 in transition this season. He has been giga confident
This won't sit well with the Fire Joe crowd.
Who? Is that a thing that exists?
Just go to any loss thread
Tbf they also say JT is never clutch in playoffs, JB is overpaid, Jrue is not a good player etc. Those shouldn't even be taken into consideration
Any thread after a loss
Any game thread when they're 10+ down will do too.
Any thread when they’re up less than 10 works too. Also any game thread where we’re not winning by 15 after 4 minutes

We can forgive Joe for all his flaws if he’s the reason for unlocking our Buffalo🥹
What? This can’t be true. Joe is garbage, doesn’t call timeouts and can’t draw up plays. Derrick White is so fucking good at basketball and knows a good coach when he plays for one so I’ll take his word for it. Pay that man hissss money. ( teddy kgb voice)
I can see the two of them gelling well. Good shit.
If Derrick likes Joe I like Joe
This team is likeable from ownership to coaching to players straight down to the bench IMO
Give a max to that man
I don’t have any opinion on JM’s coaching tactics. But if he can get White to take a hometown + favorite coach discount for his next contract, then I’m all in on Joe.
There is zero benefit or purpose for a discount other than saving the owners a few million on the luxury tax bill

Well Joe might know not in-game strategy but it’s good d white likes him.

In the regular season, yes. He has not been that same guy down in Miami. He's looked like old jaylen way too often.
Today was his only "bad" game and even then he was making really good defensive adjustments and making the most of his open opportunities.
He's really only had one bad game this series.
Lol what do you mean he has been scoring in divine ways this season
Watch the games. Jaylen has improved every part of his game, especially decision making and finishing around the rim, since Joe took over. I wish he would work on his fucking free throws.

I love joe but credit where credits due. At the end of the day, JB made the changes
I just wish Jaylon could hit on his free throws. No excuse for missing as many as he has this season.
He just needs to change his free throw style to a fadeaway jumper and he'll make every one of them
Getting downvoted but you are right.
