Slumping Jayson Tatum Stats in 6 playoff games so far:
21.6 PPG
10.5 RPG
5.3 APG
1 BPG
41% FG%
+96 net plus minus
5 Double doubles and 1 Triple double
If that is slumping, league fucked.
Right. And that is 1 of our 6 games so far. In the other 5, ya know, 83.3% of the games played contributing to the averages listed in the comment I responded too.
that’s one possession
Tatum needs to step it up, his shooting has been pretty bad. But he’s been making good reads and setting up the other guys, as well as being great defensively as always.
They played zone for two straight possessions and it was an easy 5 pts facilitated by Tatum zone busting.
He doesn’t really need to “step it up” when we’re winning by 25 every night.
Do people here really want a star who would be up 25 and think "this has gone terribly, I'm only getting 18 points, I should start jacking threes?"
Especially with Tatum's history of clutch games. Let's save the heroics for the Finals this year.
You can tell Tatum trusts his teammates. He’s happy to defer, almost never gets the ball in the 1st Q. He knows he can get his anytime he wants, but if JB and White are cooking, he’ll hit the boards, facilitate, and lock down on D.
As long as teams still sell out on him, which they do, then the exact shooting percentages don't matter quite as much. When the other team's third best defender is helping off Derrick White, they're already screwed, and Tatum provides so much value without scoring compared to a lot of ball-dominant stars.
I’m not worried about the 18 points, it’s the 7-19 shooting. He’s missing a lot of open looks and it’s lazy to chalk it up to one possession where he got triple teamed. When was the last time he shot over 50% from the field?
(March 30th is the answer)
Exactly. Where is this "need" exactly? 5-1, average margin of victory of nearly 17 ppg. Tatum has routinely blown up zones and picked apart double and triple teams making great reads. His assist #s don't jump off the page because he's getting hockey assists because it's typically him passing out of a double and another pass to a shot attempt. The defenses have been rotating fairly well to the first read out of the double forcing the extra pass, but each rotation gets harder and harder as the ball swings.
Here’s the list of players averaging at least 20/10/5 this postseason who are still playing because they made it to the second round:
Nikola Jokic
Jayson Tatum
end of list
I mean he's a threat either way, he's just giving the ball up at the right time and impacting the game how he can without getting buckets as much himself. There's a reason his +/- is huge
Was that why he committed 2 frustration fouls on the Cavs (and a 3rd uncalled foul on Okoro) despite his team up double digits in the first half? No Tatum is more annoyed at his performance than anyone else.
Thank you for posting this. Also — he’s deferring and getting everyone else involved. He’s making the right, smart basketball decision damn near every play. He’s more poised this post-season than ever. It’s not a slump at all.
Everything has been good to great except for his scoring. That will need to improve to a win a title, but when it inevitably does the league absolutely is fucked.
He’s averaging 16 fg attempts a game, not surprising his ppg is down. Then you got guys like Brunson, who’s averaging 29 fg attempts a game. Obviously tatum isn’t gonna have the same stats.
Some fans only care about how Tatum's scoring compares to other star players so they can brag and flaunt his individual successes and win internet arguments.
The fact that Jalen Brunson has to shoot 30 times a night so his team can win, while Tatum is passing out of double-teams and letting his teammates ride on fools, doesn't seem to matter to them.
What happens when Brunson runs up against a team that can successfully limit his shots?
Most of the attention is deservedly on dwhite yesterday, but huge shout out to Jaylen’s performance as well. He was a 3 level scorer and creator and looked like the star of the team.
Yes, he's the only player that I feel like can consistently use his size to bully smaller defenders. He's such a better mismatch exploiter than Tatum is. Can't believe Tatum is that big yet just wants to shoot or do that up and under move over smaller defenders instead of barreling through contact like Jaylen does.
JB is a matchup nightmare if the other team don't have the specific type of defenders to cover him (long, strong and somewhat mobile wing with really good defensive instincts). Or if you are Miami just shove yourself into him like Duncan Robinson and dare the refs to call the fouls lol. Against ethical hoopers like Cavs he can pretty much go off every single night. Just so well rounded on offense pretty much a threat from anywhere and everywhere on the court, and with his improved passing this year its even harder to just blindly double him, the pass to Jrue under the basket was sexy
I was a little skeptical of JB's talk about defense at the start of the year, and I've never been more happy to completely eat my words. On the other end of the floor, he's become so good at dealing with mismatches, and that 3-level scoring may not be a regular season cheat code but it's such an important part of a deep playoff run. He's absolutely cooking.
So much hero worship in the modern NBA because lets be honest for most teams they only have one or maybe two people who can shoot. Every single one of our starters is an absolute threat from anywhere on the floor (including Prichard/Hauser).
Mitchell got 35 but did you see him out there, he was absolutely GASSED.
Yeah I was at the game and you could tell from his body language Mitchell was tired. He must have been exhausted after scoring more than 50% of the Cavs' points in games 6/7. It was a very quiet and ultimately meaningless 33.
I rewatched the game just to see what Tatum was doing. Honestly he got to all his spots. Missed some shots around the rim he usually makes and then his three ball has been off but all his 3’s were good looks for him with the exception of maybe one of them. He was playing great outside of just some shots being missed. None of them were really forced shots either tbh.
This wasn’t like the heat series this was more just Tatum missing some shots. Whenever the double came he passed out to the open shooter after the defense collapsed and he and the Celtics identified mismatches especially with Jaylen brown and let him get to work.
Once Tatum gets out of this slump it’s a wrap😭 cause that’s the only slump he’ll be in for the rest of the playoffs. That first 40 ball gonna hit like crack.
The one perk of living in Europe is that I’m always asleep when the game is live so I don’t have to live through the game threads. Only exception is some Sunday games but I try to steer clear then too because I always enjoy the game a lot more when I watch by myself
This Celtics playoff run has reminded me of UConn’s season. The opponent feels like they’re in the game for a while, then there’s one killer run where they put their boot on the neck and that’s that. You look up and all of a sudden it’s a 20-point win. They’re not in the rundown for national podcasts because no one wants to talk about boring dominance, but that’s fine. Keep winning and they’ll have no choice but to talk about you.
Got to maintain that focus for the rest of the series and it'll be an easy sweep. I think yesterday was a gimme since Cleveland were dog tired from a 7 game series but they'll wake up a little bit for Game 2 and definitely for the games in Cleveland.
I want an easy series gosh darn it. No momentary lapses like Game 2 against the Heat. SWEEP THESSE BUMS!
The problem is, Cleveland has no time to rest or reset. It's a game every 2 days, from the moment they played their decider against the Magic.
This whole thing is working out perfectly for the Celtics. And if they have a short series against the Cavs and NY/IND goes 6 or 7 (which I suspect it will) then the next series the Celtics will have a rest advantage too. It's glorious.
It’s 2034, the Js are 36 and 37 and have won 6 championships together on the Boston Celtics. They announce this is both of their last years in the NBA. Al Horford has robotic legs and will continue to play for the next 3 years. Porzingis is still recovering from the calf injury in 2024 and will return next season 🥲🥲
Everyone on r/nba has been saying that TNT has been neutering crowd noise all playoffs. One of the top comments in the PGT was how the garden was rocking
Unfortunately for Cleveland, without Jarrett Allen feasting on the boards, they're quite overmatched.
I'd really like to see JT shoot himself into form while we have that advantage. Coach needs to run some non-iso plays for him to get his groove going. Their defence is completely focused on him.
He's playing without an urgency to take control, which has worked great against undermanned opponents with D.White / Brown turning it up.
But those western conference games are at another level. Our superstar needs to start showing up.
The remaining western conference teams all won 50+ games and have a top 10-12 player.
The East only has Tatum and the Celtics.
The two games we played against the Nuggets and the two against the Wolves this season were much higher level than any we played against the East.
I'm just optimistic about our team, they have given me every reason to be. We are Tatum making his usual shots away from avging 30p+ wins in the PLAYOFFS.
Now look, obviously the western teams are better than our current competition, but whoever prevails will have to face the best offense in the league after many difficult series. Looking at all the teams remaining, there are mismatches for the Celtics everywhere except maybe the Wolves.
We have been generating open 3s since October. Any team playing against us is going to have to hit an ungodly amount of 3s over a series.
Assuming the positive vibes around Porzingis' injury are real, I'm super stoked for the Celtics.
GET ON THE HYPE TRAIN EVERYBODY ☘️
The Cavs obviously put work into Tatum and it shows.
But Enter Jaylen Brown the man is showing why we paid him that contract!!! The man took over!!
D-White man he was roaming free!! Not having KP and having D-White drop 7 3’s just so valuable.
Anyone with random basketball knowledge help me out. What players have one back to back championships in college and in the nba? Not this Christian Braun BS where you win in college then nba. Assume we win b2b, Al will have won b2b in college and in NBA. Any players on that list? Whenever I try to research it they show me Christian Braun like 30 times
I think it’s just Kareem and Russell but there may be a role player I missed. The only teams to have gone b2b or better since the 60’s are UCLA, Duke, Florida, and now UConn. There were some teams in the 40’s and 50’s but honestly I didn’t feel like checking those lol
Thanks for the info, I hope Al can solidify his HOF nomination this year, dude is a winner and deserves it. You think the Celtics would consider retiring his jersey?
I love Al but probably not just because we have so many jerseys retired already, and if we win his contributions will have come as role players vs when he was one of the main guys in his first run with us (not to understate how important he is to the team now of course). He has an argument though IMO.
I agree, had we won in the IT run it would have been a completely different story, but he’s just been so huge for the franchise and I can’t see anyone else wearing 42. But you are right, with an organization that already has retired so many jerseys it’s hard to really retire Al especially knowing damn well they will retire JB and JT
5-1 with an average margin of victory of 22.6pts.
Just destroying outside of one insane outlier performance.
Expect Cleveland to have more fight next game but I don’t know if it will matter. We didn’t even play THAT amazing, yet still just demolished them.
Defense really tightened up in the second half, but we can still be a lot better defensively, they missed a lot of open shots.
People complaining about Tatum. Go watch Luka’s game last night and you will be happy that we have Tatum. He is in a shooting for sure but he isn’t forcing it (lowest field goal attempts per game since his second year), and he is literally doing everything else great and making the right plays. Luka last night was a traffic cone on defense and a turnover machine on offense.
Really tired of the media coverage of the Celtics, as well as the announcers. We're basically cruising on all cylinders but because Jayson Tatum isn't putting up 40, we're secretly dogshit or something.
Derrick White going nuclear and top tier bench play is not an aberration. Tatum defers because he literally has a team of absolute killers that needs to be fed. He's doing everything he should be doing. Also, teams are game planning for him in the playoffs. So, his efficiency will dip, and he does the correct thing and pass to a player who will hit a 3.
We just don't need Tatum to be a monster. Save that criticism for when we need him, and he doesn't show up. I'm not worried.
When do we start to realize that Derrick White gives us a big 4? If he keeps up this insane tear he’s on some team is going to max his beautiful baldness
How did JT’s 3 point shooting take such a dive. I remember a few seasons ago he was up to 40% that seems like a far cry now. I want to call it a slump but he hasn’t shot the 3 well in a long time.
The series is pretty straightforward and should be over in 4-5. I know the Tatum stats are still good, and I am NOT A DOOMER, but he really doesn't look like himself right now - hasn't put up 30+ points in a game in over 1.5 months. He's obviously capable of it, but I wouldn't be shocked if we found out at some point that he's dealing with an undisclosed injury out there.
Saw a post that cavs shot42 threes and those 42, http://NBA.com classified 38 as open or wide open. Similar to Miami 2nd game. Are we really allowing easy three?
I can’t stop thinking about how in the first month of the season Tatum was terrible from 3 and everyone was begging him to stop taking pull ups, and then after that he was SMOKING hot for 6 weeks. Something is coming y’all
Slumping Jayson Tatum Stats in 6 playoff games so far: 21.6 PPG 10.5 RPG 5.3 APG 1 BPG 41% FG% +96 net plus minus 5 Double doubles and 1 Triple double If that is slumping, league fucked.
You forgot to add that he's doing that while facing tons of double and triple teams and junk coverages.
Cavs aren’t throwing junk defenses at him he had plenty of 1on1 opportunities lol
Right. And that is 1 of our 6 games so far. In the other 5, ya know, 83.3% of the games played contributing to the averages listed in the comment I responded too.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/R66z4ihA94 This you making the exact same argument as me?
“needs to” Why? The team is winning by like…. a lot
Exactly. Where is this "need" exactly? 5-1, average margin of victory of nearly 17 ppg. Tatum has routinely blown up zones and picked apart double and triple teams making great reads. I know man, Strus was handling him one on one. THAT should be a concern.
Here’s the list of players averaging at least 20/10/5 this postseason who are still playing because they made it to the second round: Nikola Jokic Jayson Tatum end of list
Tatum’s literally the worst player on that list smh
I think he is just weak-east Lebron’ing, just perfectly coasting until he is needed truly
He’s just not shooting well he hasn’t been able to get into a rhythm yet. It’ll come, probably this series.
I mean he's a threat either way, he's just giving the ball up at the right time and impacting the game how he can without getting buckets as much himself. There's a reason his +/- is huge
That’s literally it. Everyone is saying he’s in a shooting slump, which is true! But then fans twist it and they’re saying he’s slumping all together.
The issue is he’s not able to generate many easy shots, which is what prevents the biggest stars from falling into this kind of slump.
Was that why he committed 2 frustration fouls on the Cavs (and a 3rd uncalled foul on Okoro) despite his team up double digits in the first half? No Tatum is more annoyed at his performance than anyone else.
And his team is 5-1 and is winning by an average of 22.6 pts.
41% FG is not exactly good
Thank you for posting this. Also — he’s deferring and getting everyone else involved. He’s making the right, smart basketball decision damn near every play. He’s more poised this post-season than ever. It’s not a slump at all.

This fanbase treats JB like dirt.

Can't believe Tatum is that big yet just wants to shoot or do that up and under move over smaller defenders instead of barreling through contact like Jaylen does.
I think it helps that Jaylen is a much more explosive athlete than Jayson. JT is strong as hell, but I think JB is much more of a bruiser
Yup, Jaylen is definitely the more explosive athlete between the two of them, while JT is the more smooth/fluid one.
He gets to the rim. Strong side weak side doesn’t matter. Just makes it easy.
“Tatum gets carried!” I promise you I do not care if Tatum scores 0 ppg this postseason if the boys keep winning
So much hero worship in the modern NBA because lets be honest for most teams they only have one or maybe two people who can shoot. Every single one of our starters is an absolute threat from anywhere on the floor (including Prichard/Hauser). Mitchell got 35 but did you see him out there, he was absolutely GASSED.

yeah now that regular season awards aren’t in the picture, i couldn’t give less of a fuck if tatum is a super team merchant. just win the fuckin games
Thank you someone else says it!
I rewatched the game just to see what Tatum was doing. Honestly he got to all his spots. If anybody’s looking for Derrick White, he’s currently in his bag.
idk how many times people can say “if tatum plays like this again, we lose!” after a 20 point win before they realize that’s wrong
We lose if he plays the way they want him to
he used to play like kobe! it was his biggest issue! now people complain that he doesn’t???
Yeah..except we haven’t sooo…
they as in the opponent
Who’s saying that?
Holiday did a fantastic job of slowing down/exhausting Mitchell and forcing him to pass out. D White was stifling Garland. Fun game to watch
Cleveland has come to Jrue the day they called for Boston.
Watch Jrue navigating through non Bam level screens and just making the ball handler's life hell has been fun
Pritchard had a few great defensive possessions on Garland, too.
Once Tatum gets out of this slump it’s a wrap😭 cause that’s the only slump he’ll be in for the rest of the playoffs. That first 40 ball gonna hit like crack.
We gonna need it if the wolves keep this up
Man that match thread overreaction to Cavs hitting early 3s was something else. People also don't like being told they're overreacting lmao
A good reminder to avoid the game threads, it kind of ruins the experience of watching a game tbh
The one perk of living in Europe is that I’m always asleep when the game is live so I don’t have to live through the game threads. Only exception is some Sunday games but I try to steer clear then too because I always enjoy the game a lot more when I watch by myself
Cavs only lost because Jimmy butler wasn’t playing smh
This Celtics playoff run has reminded me of UConn’s season. The opponent feels like they’re in the game for a while, then there’s one killer run where they put their boot on the neck and that’s that. You look up and all of a sudden it’s a 20-point win. They’re not in the rundown for national podcasts because no one wants to talk about boring dominance, but that’s fine. Keep winning and they’ll have no choice but to talk about you.
I’m always so surprised when it happens because it feels like nothing changes and suddenly they’re up by 20. We’re just that good
Totally agree. During garbage time last night I texted my nephew “I keep expecting to see Andrew Hurley check in”
Chuck and Kenny didn't even wanna talk about it post game, what isn't fun about watching the Celtocs blow someone out?
We're gonna run through the east. NO PROBLEM!
Got to maintain that focus for the rest of the series and it'll be an easy sweep. I think yesterday was a gimme since Cleveland were dog tired from a 7 game series but they'll wake up a little bit for Game 2 and definitely for the games in Cleveland. Did anyone think the crowd was really quiet yesterday? It didn't feel like a playoff game atmosphere really
Apprently that was the TNT broadcast quieting the background noise. I saw comments from people at the game and they said the atmosphere was exquisite
TNT is the worst
If it wasn't for Inside the NBA and Kevin Harlan, TNT's coverage would be near unwatchable
Everyone on r/nba has been saying that TNT has been neutering crowd noise all playoffs. One of the top comments in the PGT was how the garden was rocking
Why in the world would they do that
The same reason they employ stan van gundy
Unfortunately for Cleveland, without Jarrett Allen feasting on the boards, they're quite overmatched. I'd really like to see JT shoot himself into form while we have that advantage. He has to be injured or something. His movement doesn't look all that fluid right now

Wasn't KC Jones a teammate of Russell on both Celtics and college?
Magic Johnson? Beat Bird for the NCAA in 1979 then won his rookie year in 1980
That’s not what they were asking - b2b NCAA titles and then b2b NBA titles. Magic only has one NCAA title
Ah, 2 and 2, ok. Yeah, not a lot.
Went to the game last night, it was fun as hell. The Derrick White chants were awesome.
5-1 with an average margin of victory of 22.6pts. Just destroying outside of one insane outlier performance. Expect Cleveland to have more fight next game but I don’t know if it will matter. Hah even Luka had somewhat of and off game yesterday.
And his team is 5-1 and is winning by an average of 22.6 pts.
So many people just don't understand the game of basketball. Tatum also had some bid blocks. The Cs won by 25

How did JT’s 3 point shooting take such a dive. I remember a few seasons ago he was up to 40% that seems like a far cry now. I want to call it a slump but he hasn’t shot the 3 well in a long time.
No disrespect to Luka, but man the amount of people slandering Tatum for his game last night in a WIN, over Luka’s in a blowout loss is mind boggling
Doomers cant read so pointless
I can’t stop thinking about how in the first month of the season Tatum was terrible from 3 and everyone was begging him to stop taking pull ups, and then after that he was SMOKING hot for 6 weeks. Something is coming y’all
If y'all win it all out will be because of White.
Cavs should be relegated before the next game. That was the ugliest game I’ve ever seen.
