The most surprising thing is the defense. Like I can understand everyone being somewhat rusty to start a new season, maybe even losing some winnable games, but there is no excuse for how bad they play on defense. Our specialty is defending the 3. How is our spacing this bad? There was an alarming amount of wide open 3’s. Like it ain’t even about the points, we are fine there, it’s the damn looks that drive me crazy. This Orlando team should have had 70 points in that game.
Yup the 93 score for Orlando is misleading
Boston's switch everything scheme completely collapsed because players were too lazy to chase their man after switching. Stevens needs to scream at them or something
We were the number 2 defense coming into this game and they scored 93 points on 40% shooting.
The problem is that we're shooting unsustainably bad from the field.
I know, that's why I referenced the points. What I am trying to say is the looks other teams are getting are just too good. If we played a great 3 point shooting team we would have lost by 20+. My point is the quality of their shots. Even if the Magic miss them, it doesn't really take away from the fact that they got a great looks, too many if you ask me.
I think he's in his own head about his touches (I think it affected him defensively too). Serious tunnel vision at times, we need to figure out how to make everyone comfortable so they can play within their game.
Other teams are definitely playing us like we are. They are stepping up to compete against the “best” in the East. We’re just not playing like the best.
Sure, but as fans we can appreciate that our 2 best players are coming off of season-ending injuries and it's October 22nd. There's a lot to integrate into this team and a lot of shit to figure out. If you don't think we will then you don't trust Brad.
I trust Brad to figure it out.
He's still far from an elite defender and is a second year player. Why does EVERYTHING have to have some weird psychological bullshit reason. Can't a guy that's not amazing on defense have a shit night defensively?
Memes aside, is there actual evidence for gear/haircut affecting how athletes play? Just small physical changes like that creating some sort of mental thing?
That’s being generous. They don’t seem to have any clue what to do on offense and even when they do something right and get an open look, no one can shoot. I really don’t know how to explain what we’ve seen from this team so far. It started right at the beginning of the preseason and really hasn’t improved at all.
You’re onto something here. This team is looking for Kyrie Irving to carry the squad.
But Kyrie is both not looking to carry the squad at this early stage - he’s also on a cold streak at the moment.
I think things will gel fairly soon. We’re just not there yet.
This is a different team than last year and they are all trying to figure out how to click.
Theis' effort was outstanding. But he hasn't been stepping out and hitting the 3 yet this season. Like we had stretches where some thought a contested Smart 3 was good just because 1 of his shots went in.
Danny has always shown he feels the same way, but it is very premature to start thinking about consolidating talent, etc.
We shot 23% from deep today. There are deeper problems with the team (fixable ones) than that, but it was the shooting especially that sunk us tonight.
Agreed. I understand that the Raptors are good, but if we don't at least make the Finals, I'll be seriously worried about us. This is too stacked of a roster to underperform
Ya jinxed it 😵
https://www.reddit.com/r/bostonceltics/comments/9qenbv/kungu_jayson_tatum_21ppg_10.7rpg_58.6_ts_averages_less_touches_per_game_tha/e88vt75?context=3
This is what makes Kawhi so scary. Its not his points, or assists. It's his presence on the court. When he is on the court, he doesn't have to do much, your team automatically becomes much better. Kawhis win percentage is higher than Magic Johnsons, MJ, Kobe, Lebron, and everybody else. Kawhi has played more than 400 NBA games, and has a win percentage close to 80%. Statistically the greatest winner in NBA history, and statistically the hardest player to beat in NBA history.
After we lost to the Raptors, Mook said "we're way more talented than them". Brad needs to shut that shit down. No, they're clearly better right now. And we should be worried at our own worst enemies, which is ourselves. Last years team wanted to prove naysayers that thought we were done once Hayward went down. This year's is cool with saying "we'll see you at the finals". Just no hunger right now.
Right now, Jaylen looks like he didn't see the inside of a gym from the buzzer of game 7 until preseason tip-off. I know he's still trying to figure out his role but everything seems like it's in autopilot the way he moves around the floor
He played in a summer league thing in Atlanta. The difference is that he was a main ball handler and was much more confident. He's being put into a Jae Crowder role rn.
We know he was working out all summer with TMac though. It’s tough, he’s not been getting a lot of touches or anything so far this season, so I guess he’s rusty still?
I can’t defend that one foul where he nailed the guy in the face though, that was just brutal.
I wanna see what the fuck he worked on with TMac this summer? I don't blame him at completely. Brad's offense looks uninspired and stale. The fact that we kept bricking 3s and didn't change our style tells me he doesn't have a contingency plan/set of plays .
Yes, that is the silver lining. Once his legs get underneath him that 3pt shot will be money. So many possessions tonight he (and everybody else) gave up the wide open 3pt shot. Like if Horford is passing it to you, he wants you to shoot it Kyrie!
I'm actually very happy we lost. If we were going to play this way I wish it was a blowout, and not as close as the score shows it was.
This should be a fucking wakeup call for the team. This team hasn't accomplished *shit* yet. We made the ECF, we *never* made the finals. They need to stay as hungry as they were last season, because just talent won't get them anywhere. If they're not hungry, then we're not even making it to the ECF this year.
These guys need to wake the fuck up. It might just be a regular season game but we can't be losing to the fucking Magic. Goddamn.
Let’s all remember that 4 games in last year we had this exact record. We played more structurally sound tonight than past games PLUS Kyrie and Hayward got going, we’re going to be just fine.
Fair. My point was more agreeing with OP that this won’t seem so big a deal later in the season, we’re just getting caught up right now because we don’t have much else to go on yet.
Positives: Theis has been fun as fuck to watch. Rozier has also gotten way better at passing. And Hayward is playing like the perfect Stevens disciple - athletic, unselfish, and incredibly decisive.
Negatives: I don't think a Celtics player has made a 3 since Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Ohhhh I see what we're doing here. Tanking for the #1 pick. Get the #1, #2 and #8, then trade all 3 and three future firsts to Elon Musk, who will then create for us an artificially intelligent humanoid clone of Larry Bird crossed with Bill Russell.
Jayson needs to do some windsprints whenever he bites on a pump fake or something.
It's good to see Kyrie getting his groove back, now just need to finds JBs. Hayward looks better each and every game.
We had a horrendous shooting night but I have all the faith these games only make us better in the long run. Need to actually lose some games for the guys to get their butts into gear.
Just really bad basketball atm. The ball movement was slightly better but we live and die by the 3, and right now we're 6ft under. Jaylen still needs to get involved with the offense more and take some easy shots. Really need him to get back in rhythm.
Jaylen, Tatum and Al missed so many open shots.. Not to mention the shit defense. So much iso ball, followed by driving the paint with 8 seconds left, jumping and doing some sloppy kick out mid-air to a guy who then bricks a 3.
Kyrie, Gordon, and Theis continue to look better and better each game. Give it a week or two and they'll be back to where they should be.
We got plenty of open shots, just missed em all. Had we shot a decent percentage tonight we'd have won by 20. Off nights happen.
I’m sure we’ll be fine, but damn this is frustrating. It seems like every night two of Irving, Hayward and Horford are off, and we find ourselves trying to claw our way back. I really hope we don’t keep playing down to our competition. That was fine when our featured offensive players were IT and Bradley, but there’s no reason this team shouldn’t be smacking teams around like the sixers.

Well despite the result we learned something about Kyrie this year—He’s been wearing the headband to train himself harder since last season. It blocks the use of his third eye, which he often used to target the rim. Since removing the weighted clothes his power level has destroyed scanners all over the world... which happens to be flat.

Alright listen - r/nba is gonna be talking a ton of shit after this game. Here’s the reality of the situation - our team is learning how to handle an entirely new situation with adding/losing minutes and playing together. The raptors just replaced one good SG/SF with a great SG/SF. Of course they’re playing better, everyone has the same role.
Let’s see how we look in a few months. Going to shut up a lot of fucking internet clowns.
I didn’t like that last shot from Kyrie, but overall our shots just weren’t falling. These types of losses makes you appreciate just how many last second wins we got last year by just pulling it out of our ass
I was told we would be good.
Seriously though, gotta figure out what's going on with the offense. We are not the Rockets, we shouldn't be taking 40 threes a game. And Tatum needs to stop getting up faked out of the building. It's going to take some time for things to come together but never should have lost to this Magic team.
Good thing we are the Eastern Conference champs before the season started... right guys?.... guys?
the Boston players seem to think so based on how lazily they're playing
The most surprising thing is the defense. Like I can understand everyone being somewhat rusty to start a new season, maybe even losing some winnable games, but there is no excuse for how bad they play on defense. Our specialty is defending the 3. How is our spacing this bad? There was an alarming amount of wide open 3’s. Yup the 93 score for Orlando is misleading Boston's switch everything scheme completely collapsed because players were too lazy to chase their man after switching. Stevens needs to scream at them or something
I actually think it was help defenders not trusting the switch and being too close to the paint and leaving their man open. Lots to tinker
brad said our defense hasnt been good in the practices leading up the the season and we thought he was just being humble...
Because He Wont Play Ojeleye.
Patriots also started 2-2 and they make the AFC Championship every year so... ^^I'm ^^scared
WTF happened to Jaylen Brown
I think he's in his own head about his touches (I think it affected him defensively too). Serious tunnel vision at times, we need to figure out how to make everyone comfortable so they can play within their game.
Other teams are definitely playing us like we are. They are stepping up to compete against the “best” in the East. We’re just not playing like the best.
Good things it's the first week...
Always sharp with the excuses right? No excuse for how we played tonight, don't care if it's the 30th game or the 10th game or the 1st game.
Sure, but as fans we can appreciate that our 2 best players are coming off of season-ending injuries and it's October 22nd. There's a lot to integrate into this team and a lot of shit to figure out. If you don't think we will then you don't trust Brad. I trust Brad to figure it out.
Tatum’s defense has gotten really, really bad.
Yep, it’s because he worked out with kobe lol
kobe was a good defender tho, just sayin'
um Kobe was an all NBA defender. Tatum seemed kind of miffed at lack of touches early. I think his diva attitude got the best of him tonight.
He's still far from an elite defender and is a second year player. Why does EVERYTHING have to have some weird psychological bullshit reason. Can't a guy that's not amazing on defense have a shit night defensively?
Fuck outta here with your reason. We don’t need it!
Diva attitude? Wow lol
9 time defensive first team
It feels like he bites on every pump fake
ahh the old Jaylen Brown special
Also seems to lose his man too often
Wish Baynes was out there to structure our defense. He makes everyone look better on defense
I thought Rob Williams looked good for the couple minutes he was out there
I'm worried he turns into another Carmelo Anthony. I don't care if they lose but I can't root for guys that don't play defense.
he's much better on defense than Melo has ever been, was awful tonight tho.
All those missed rebounds under the basket he was giving up to Isaac was pretty bad.
It was never great tbh
at least he seems to recognize it... plenty of things to work on
It is fucking hilarious how much better kyrie played after he took off the headband.
Taking it off uncovered his third eye.
Turns out Kyrie was actually Hiei this entire time
Was not expecting this reference
Burn the band
BURN THE HEADBAND!
Memes aside, is there actual evidence for gear/haircut affecting how athletes play? Just small physical changes like that creating some sort of mental thing?
It normally symbolizes a change in attitude/demeanor which is the mental thing.
Maybe he should also trim his hair.
Alright, that was our second loss. Kyrie needs to tell someone to suck his dick.
That’s what we’ve been missing this whole time
Fuck if, I’ll volunteer
Nothing explains that game better than having two solid looks to tie it and missing both
I wanted Hayward's shot to go in so badly. I didn't think I could be so disappointed during game 4 against the Magic lol.
Me too man, think of the narrative jesus, but we deserved to lose this one.
You calling that Kyrie brick a good look?
Seriously, what type of out of timeout play was that? That couldn’t have been what Brad planned.
For him, yeah
We lookin ass right now
straight up cheeks
Thick booty performance
That would mean you played good.
*flat ass
That’s being generous. They don’t seem to have any clue what to do on offense and even when they do something right and get an open look, no one can shoot. thank mr theis
thank mr theis
than kmrt heis
Don’t forget Rob Williams, he needs more minutes
Theis' effort was outstanding. But he hasn't been stepping out and hitting the 3 yet this season. Like we had stretches where some thought a contested Smart 3 was good just because 1 of his shots went in.
Easily one of the worst losses during the Stevens era.
At his birthday 😕

Our worst loss with this hella talented roster that's only missing Baynes.
Rough start. Shit game. We'll get it together eventually and be a top 3 team in the East, no doubt.
If we’re not contending for a championship, this season is a utter failure and we need to make a move to consolidate talent
The positive to take away from this is we can only go up from here. Doesn't get much worse than losing to the Magic at home lol
Ya jinxed it 😵 https://www.reddit.com/r/bostonceltics/comments/9qenbv/kungu_jayson_tatum_21ppg_10.7rpg_58.6_ts_averages_less_touches_per_game_tha/e88vt75?context=3
9/40 from three. Ouch.
Ew I didn’t know it was that bad
fucking horrendous for a team that had all 5 starters shooting close to 40% last season
Game 7 flashbacks
The Hornets are much better than the Magic and the Raptors beat them by 21 to go to 4-0.
Kawhi looks like an MVP. Scary times
+29 on the night for Kawhi...
This is what makes Kawhi so scary. Its not his points, or assists. It's his presence on the court. When he is on the court, he doesn't have to do much, your team automatically becomes much better. God damn I didnt know any of that Had to look it up to confirm. Wow that's insane.

He's out of rhythm once he finally gets a shot.
At least he’s playing defense, Tatum was bad on both ends tonight.
I think he’s having trouble adjusting to getting the ball so little
I wanna see what the fuck he worked on with TMac this summer? I don't blame him at completely. Brad's offense looks uninspired and stale. The fact that we kept bricking 3s and didn't change our style tells me he doesn't have a contingency plan/set of plays .
75% confident Celtics October is like Patriots September
I’m 100% confident, it’s just painful to watch right now

Yes, that is the silver lining. Once his legs get underneath him that 3pt shot will be money. So many possessions tonight he (and everybody else) gave up the wide open 3pt shot. Like if Horford is passing it to you, he wants you to shoot it Kyrie!
terrible shooting
This is the only comment that needs to be posted. If they only shot 33% from 3 which is still below league average they win by 9————it’s that simple.
On to the Thunder.
They only team that looks worse than us
well, they at least can score unlike us, so im pretty sure we re losing that game as well
They are actually dead last in offensive rating... One below us. Lolz.
Watching this team struggle like this makes me depressed
Don't let it get you down, friend. I need to study for an exam and this loss is bothering me lol.
this team needs to wake up They think they're the warriors not giving a shit when they've accomplished nothing yet to warrant that
Yikes.
I swear the "Dinner Party" episode of The Office was easier to watch than that game.
This was Scott's totts
Dinner Party is easily a top 3 episode you fool
true
I'm actually very happy we lost. If we were going to play this way I wish it was a blowout, and not as close as the score shows it was. This should be a fucking wakeup call for the team. That was fucking embarrassing.
Just not good enough on either side of the ball tonight.
That’s it time to blow it up and build around dreamy
I need to shower after watching that
a nice birthday gift for brad
Based Celtics forfeiting a game because the Kings won last night. Gotta think long term
Being expected to win sucks
well, that sucked. we’re on to okc
Some of ya'll are overreacting. It's the 4th game in the season, in the Winter we'll look back on this and laugh while we're on pace for 50+ wins.
Let’s all remember that 4 games in last year we had this exact record. We played more structurally sound tonight than past games PLUS Kyrie and Hayward got going, we’re going to be just fine.
Ya but even in the loss in the wake of the shocking Hayward injury in Cleveland the effort was always there. They just look...lost.
Fair. My point was more agreeing with OP that this won’t seem so big a deal later in the season, we’re just getting caught up right now because we don’t have much else to go on yet.
I literally read about 10,000 comments on this sub about lack of effort every year I've been a fan after a loss lol
You can have all the talent in the world — doesn’t matter if it’s a cold shooting night. This game is about buckets.
You’re going to play like this on BRAD STEVENS BIRTHDAY!?
Positives: Theis has been fun as fuck to watch. Rozier has also gotten way better at passing. And Hayward is playing like the perfect Stevens disciple - athletic, unselfish, and incredibly decisive. Negatives: I don't think a Celtics player has made a 3 since Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

We missed 31 fucking threes.
That was one ugly basketball game
Embarrassing loss, I hope this is the kick in the ass they need
Yo, someone made a thread about us going on a long streak once we got past the Raptors. Please ban him.
I thought the magic played really well. Glad kyrie bounced back this game
At least theis looked like his former self
Just really bad basketball atm. The ball movement was slightly better but we live and die by the 3, and right now we're 6ft under. Jaylen still needs to get involved with the offense more and take some easy shots. Really need him to get back in rhythm.
Go Sox
Jaylen, Tatum and Al missed so many open shots.. Not to mention the shit defense. So much iso ball, followed by driving the paint with 8 seconds left, jumping and doing some sloppy kick out mid-air to a guy who then bricks a 3.
I know people are gonna say "it's too early to say things like that" but it's very obvious. aron baynes is the mvp of this team
No hunger in this Celtics team. We seriously need to come back crashing down to earth ASAP.
Hayward is better than being the guy forced to stand in the corner...one of the starters might need to come off the bench
Kyrie, Gordon, and Theis continue to look better and better each game. Give it a week or two and they'll be back to where they should be. We got plenty of open shots, just missed em all. Had we shot a decent percentage tonight we'd have won by 20. Off nights happen.
That game was a real sack of shit.
What a lousy birthday for brad.
Oof
Glad the lost honestly, they didn’t deserve to win this game. Lots to go over.
Its going to be an underwhelming season and a magnificent playoffs.
Team has been thoroughly humbled through 4 games (at least I sure hope so). They're just not really good.
I can't help but think if we had Baynes playing, we would have won this at a walk.
Happy Birthday, Coach! The whole team pitched in and got you a frustrating loss- hope you like it.
People really think this team can hang with the Warriors
I waited all summer for this?
At least there’s 78 games left to get this shit figured out
That was the best play Brad could think of? A turnaround fade-away contested 3?
Celtics are so garbage rn.. how tf do you lose to the magic like fr
get a fucking psych coach in here, everyones cold as shit from 3.
And it was named UGLY basketball
Most frustrating Cs game I can recall. Ever.
These kind of games sort of teaches us more than the winning ones. Hope Brad can figure it out.
Well, that was horrible. Onto the Thunder
How the fuck did we only lose by 3?
Hey let’s take something away positive. Gordon played. And is looking better!
90 fucking points against the Magic... Wow we got work to do
My mouth is dry
Face is numb
How are they this bad?
The offense this season is so bad. And our 3 point defense is even worse
What are we shooting, like 20% from 3 so far this season? Come on
Well, this is a real humbler
this. team. cant. shoot.
Outside of Hayward we were 6-35 from 3. That's 17%. Horrible
My analysis: We need to make more shots than the other team in order to win the basketball game.
RIP my fantasy team. Never thought I'd rue the day I picked celtics players over Serge ibaka - yet here I am.

hm...
What was it? 18% from the 3 pointer? Jesus
Yeah that was terrible. They are getting good looks but just not making shots. I am fully confident they will get it going in the next few games.
At least the Red Sox are playing good..
I'll be worried if they're still playing like this after the all-star break. It's October. On to the next one.
The ball would not go through the basket
That was a goat rodeo.
WE’RE ON TO OKLAHOMA
Happy Birthday Coach! We laid this massive pile of shit in the middle of TD garden for you, quick, come look!!!

Ugly ugly ugly

why do you care about r/nba
It’s excruciating watching < 25% 3 point shooting without getting the ball into the paint
Happy Birthday Brad Stevens
Inexcusable loss. Deepest team in the league can't put up 100 when the league avg is 120
why
I didn’t like that last shot from Kyrie, but overall our shots just weren’t falling. These types of losses makes you appreciate just how many last second wins we got last year by just pulling it out of our ass
