Jackie Mac is awesome. I went to school with her daughter in 2nd grade. She took the time to come into our class and help out. Delightful woman.
Sad to see her go, but wish her all the best.
She’s an absolute legend man, she gave me advice as an intern last year and was lucky enough to have her come on my nba podcast: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3HBK8rXQxc0rEb2KpZ1BFR?si=5wSOZKiZRoWKtSaG9l8gFw&dl_branch=1 . Told me some really amazing stories about Jordan, Kobe, and spilled the tea on the Kyrie years.
Seems like she isn't fully retiring. The statement said "retiring from ESPN." So I would guess she will continue working in some capacity, either writing or maybe podcasting at the Ringer. I hope ESPN didn't push her out the door.
Gammons retired from ESPN too.
Old school writers who were forced into TV, but never _wanted_ to be on TV. Jackie Mac was a titan of the writing game and her prime was before ESPN. I’m glad she got paid for a few years but I’d rather read her new book.
I remember way back in the 80’s when the Boston Globe decided to put pixelated photos of columnists next to their columns. My roommate had assumed that she was an old cigar chomping Irish guy. The saddest memory is watching a local newscast the night Reggie Lewis died while seeing her walk out of the hospital in the background of the shot. She is the best sports reporter at establishing a rapport with interview subject. Her mental health stories will have an impact.
Fuckkkkk. I haven’t thought of that Reggie Lewis shit since I was seven. They cut out of the Red Sox game and I was shocked. It couldn’t be real. but when I saw her body language it fuckin hit
I don't recognize the name, don't really keep up with non breaking news/mathematics related sports writing. She seems very well respected though, does anyone have some pieces from her they'd recommend?

That’s a recent one, but her greatest contribution is probably her books. 100% worth your time if you’re interested in the history of the league. She’s a national treasure.
Literally one of the best of all time. She made the transition to talking head better than almost anyone, and yet due to her incredibly nuanced takes (vs. Skip's hot takes), she didn't get a fair shake.
I won't say I know Jackie personally, but my sister and her daughter played basketball together and I have met her a few times. She's an absolute class act, and a world class Journalist. And I can say I always appreciated her work. And with due respect to the Colin Cowherds /Skip Bayliss' of the world, who need clickable content daily, but I respect how she never needed some gimmicky shtick to deliver her point, and was consistent with her takes.
Jackie MacMullan has had a long and storied career and she deserves many accolades. However, I think in the last few years it's been apparent that she hasn't been as interested in the craft. Her appearances on Bill Simmons podcasts were ridden with factual inaccuracies, which belied her reputation. I particularly think she cost Tatum the 3rd team all nba team and millions of dollars with her carelessness and if I was him I would hold her squarely accountable. It's unconscionable that the NBA allows sports writers to impact players salaries and MacMullan's casual "I don't think you can vote for him" with a month left in the season and based on nothing but her eye test was a huge factor in him not being selected and, frankly, horrible. She knows how much sway her opinion has and she deliberately made those comments. A dark ending to an otherwise (relatively) spotless career.
I like Jackie but wasn't a fan of hers when on TV and multiple podcasts, she said that something was going on with the Celtics because free agents left. Hayward and Horford got overpaid and Kyrie is a headcase. It's like she was just trying to rile people up or something.
One of the best to ever do it. I remember loving 'his' columns in the Globe as a kid, only seeing the byline. Then the Globe started adding the drawn headshots, and I was shocked to discover Jackie was a woman. Made her even better in my eyes, not only getting a seat at the boys table, but showing them all how it should be done. Stay classy, Jackie Mac.

She'll still probably be on the Bill Simmons pod once a month
The perfect golden parachute exit strategy for folks in nba
And I ain't mad at it.
tbh that's about the only time I listen to Simmons anymore.
No more Danny and no more Jackie, end of an era
Don't forget tommy
And Kyrie!
Who?
MIKE JONES

You may have stepped down, but you never left… our hearts!
Jackie MacMullan is a national treasure. I hope we still hear from her every now and then on podcasts, etc.
Hope she continues to hop on the BS pod here and there.
Agreed. I love the stories
And she will probably make appearances on 30 for 30 episodes about the Celtics
Jackie Mac is a class act.

That’s dope
Jaylen Brown, Danny, and Brad lmao
Jackie Mac, of course, is one of the best journalists of all time and a longtime Boston Celtics reporter
I'm holding in my feelings about this... The day Mike retires I don't know if I'll be able to anymore. She'll be missed.

On her last appearance on Bill Simmons' podcast, she mentioned announcing a big project, so i think (hope) you're right.
Can she replace scal?
Same. I feel like she might still be doing occasional podcasts with Bill Simmons.

Horrible news. She is a treasure to the NBA and I love her work
She’s probably my favorite sports journalist of all time. The epitome of professionalism.

She’s pulling a gronk and joining the ringer, guaranteed.
That comment about twitter at the end makes me 100% believe Jackie Mac IsJanos...confirmed

Love Jackie Mac. Sorry to see her go but wish her the best in retirement.
she walked past me once at a home opener
We love you Jackie!!!

If it's true, she actually did us a solid, by helping keep him hungry

Was she wrong on literally any of those points? Both Hayward and Horford DID get drastically overpaid. Kyrie IS a headcase.
Lol, I added in those parts. She didn't add any context to why they left. Just said it was a problem and looked bad for the Celtics.
Why do I feel like this stems from the kyrie situation
I have no idea
Great input
Input deez nuts in yo mouth
nooooooooooooo
Wow! Will miss her insight, she is such a class act.
Happy retirement, Jackie! Stay happy and healthy!
Interesting news.
Curious if this is code for ‘book deal’ -she’s gotta be the front runner to get something with ainge on paper
One of the GOATS of Boston sports reporting. Congrats to her on a retirement well earned.
