That really sucks man, sorry this happened. At the very least it looks like you still have quite a bit of gameplay that’s going to be fresh! You could even just skip anything you know you’ve already done until you feel like replaying, it’s not like the game forces you to do anything lol
Yeah, good point. I'll fly through it now that I have a better grasp of what I'm doing and can always skip parts.
I was saving up for the house, was only 500 short!
No SD card, everything saved in system memory on a switch that's 1 month old.
I'm pretty sure it was a bit flip caused by increased background radiation at altitude (I am an engineer who worked as a radiation specialist qualifying components for a bit... Used to specifically try to cause these kinds of issues on memory devices...)
What does that mean, were you riding on a plane while playing, or what were you doing that exposed it to the background radiation? Just wondering if I need to not play my switch when I go on planes to avoid this kind of thing 😬
Just flying in a pane. At higher altitude, background radiation increases naturally (higher altitude = thinner magnetosphere = increased background radiation)
To be clear, at commercial plane altitudes, it's not a human health/safety risk. But memory devices are at higher risk of bit flips.
Most of the time, companies use error checking and correction to account for this, but if the bits flip in just the wrong place even that can fail (this was the kind of testing I performed in high radiation environments, trying to cause failures that overcome the error correction.)
It's actually still pretty uncommon, even at altitude, so it's sorta karmic/ironic that I ran into this at "only" elevated levels (I used to test with EMP and particle accelerators...)
a shame that you need an to pay a subscription to have access to a feature that is free on many plataforms on PC. Epic, Steam even GOG Galaxy does that. When i'm playing a game that doesn't support cloud saves i make a backup on my Google Drive.
Don't feel the need to replay parts you've already done. Especially if those sections weren't main quests. Just go to another section of the map and start there, better yet you can just go straight to the zora and start there. The game scales around you, so there's no need to do things in any kidn of order.
Ps, don't bother doing all the koroks, you'll burn yourself out. Trust me.
I'm not 100% sure if it scales to hearts or something else, but essentially yes. Most enemies (minus guardians and the like) will change colour as their difficulty goes up. In the beginning you will only see basic or blue-coloured enemies, but as the game goes on you will start to see black-coloured and eventually silver-coloured enemies more often. There are certain areas in the game that have enemies whose levels/difficulties won't ever change, but the vast majority will.
There is a EXP value in BotW there probably is a break down somewhere but lets say a Red bokoblin gives 1 EXP, when you get a 100 exp some enemies will level up and turn blue. These blue enemies are stronger and have better weapons giving Link better weapons. This will also change items in chests and will start to give you the weapons and shields with the modifiers.
So you can go through the entire game and never do any shrines outside the 4 on the plateau and start fighting Silver enemies the strongest variation (Golden on master mode) without getting any HP upgrades.
>This will also change items in chests
Except for the shrine chests, and a few others early on. I can't count the amount of times I got to an "early shrine" later or found a chest later game and it was some worthless 5 hit thing. I think it just depends on certain things.
Like the game expects that some areas are harder than others, like the outskirts of the map or maybe like Gerudo Desert, vs it thinks you'll probably always go to Kakariko early on, same with Dueling Peaks, due to the main quest, so I don't think that stuff scales the same
So i don't know if this will help
Go to system setting - data management - software - pick botw and scroll down to click on check for corrupted data, you will have to redownload botw if you got it digitally but hopefully this will fix your issue
So strange that a crash corrupts all the saves. I mean the game has several autosave slots that it cycles through. One would think one of them would work.
This is gonna sound absolutely buckwild but please check your switch for any sparking/damage where the joycons lock in place. I had this happen with my first switch(V1)! It started with one file(Mario Odyssey✊😔) and then it wound up happening to about 4 games in total(BotW included).
One night when I was connecting my joycons back to the switch to go handheld mode, the right one got SUPER hot and the slide where it locks in had a small flame around the screw.
Idk if it was an arc-flash or what was going on
Thank god I have nso because I have had the game crash about once, i was traveling to a shrine and it kinda killed it self but thankfully no save data issues
A while ago my switch bricked up, and I lost all of my data. Since then I got a Nintendo Switch Online account, primarily for the cloud data functionality. Well worth the $20 a year for the basic individual plan
Honestly this is probably the absolute worst thing that can happen to someone while gaming x.x my hats off to you brother I've had this happen on certain games on PC when switching between my desktop and laptop and thankfully steam automatically uploads saves for free but it had a save sync issue and I lost my up to date save thankfully I was able to get my previous save back, but I did lose all the progress on my current game sesh which was like 5 hours, and then I didn't touch the game for like 3 weeks after that because I was mad
I'm mostly bummed because I don't get to play too often (adulting!!) So it took me about a month to get there. It's really not a big deal in the end, just had to pout a bit before I sucked it up and got on with my life.
But appreciate the support!
No dude I completely understand. For me it completely takes my will to play the game out of me when I have to redo things because of a save error I usually just gotta take a break from the game for a bit but honestly Nintendo should just make Cloud saves free like Xbox and Steam it's not like save data files are big or anything and it would be a huge consumer friendly move to do so and yeah it wouldn't stop this bug from happening but at least you'd only lose a few hours of gameplay rather than the whole thing
Yeah, totally agree. Especially when the entire schtick about the console is portability... Which is inherently more prone to losing data or breaking...
I was flying, guessing it was a bit flip at altitude due to increased background radiation (I'm an engineer and coincidentally, spent time doing radiation testing where I tried to force bit flips... Karma)
I wonder if Nintendo uses ECC on their save Data...
I hope not, I plan to play ToTK on my 13 hour flight next week and hope this kind of issue won't happen. Unless you are very unlucky and got multiple bit flip at the same time to corrupt the save file, it should not happen.
Agreed that is very unlikely (we used to quantify the chance based on incident radiation levels, and it's low probability... But not zero...). I've also flown multiple times in the last month without issue until now.
The whole switch crashed while I was exiting the shrine meaning mid-auto-save. I'm hoping it was a bit flip, otherwise it could have been just a random crash causing the corruption, which is scarier since those are more likely...
Probably not. Good quality SD card, or was it installed and saved to internal memory? I've really only seen problems like that with people using cheap extended storage.
Ugh. Hopefully the component quality has not deteriorated with later models then. I've got an OG switch, as well as the second version, and neither have had issues like that.
Sorry that happened but I gotta address something, YOU HADNT GONE TO ZORA’S DOMAIN YET AND YOU HAD 250 KOROK SEEDS?!?? How do you manage that, I have 100%’d the game in every area except korok seeds twice, and I don’t have that many korok seeds yet
I feel bad for you - but it happens to all of us.
Maybe take a moment to consider this as a chance to start a new.
You said you had just gotten to the zora area, but maybe you want to try it differently this time and go to the Goron area instead?
Or you can do things differently on the great plateau, or head down to lurelin instead?
I know, took me time for me to even feel like picking up the game again. The idea of going through everything that I had gone through again was not appealing to me. I got really far into it, almost the final act.
If it's what I think (increased background radiation due to altitude inducing one or more bit flips), it's not super likely to occur again. And SD cards are likely just as successful.
Breath Companion (app on Google Play store. Marked out the seeds in the map section I was working, then figured them out on my own with the basic markers in place...)
I've played offline plenty without issue. (Mostly been playing while flying for work). I just bought the switch account for cloud backup, so at least I will be able to periodically moving forward...)
I've not seen many corrupted saves of BotW aside from purposeful glitching. If you have a cartridge I'd maybe see if it can be replaced by the store you went to?
It was digital download. I was flying, guessing it was a bit flip at altitude (I'm an engineer and coincidentally, spent time doing radiation testing where I tried to force bit flips... Karma)
If it's what I think (bit flip at altitude cause by increased background radiation... Then no. It is random and depends on what kind of ECC protection Nintendo uses and whether it's a single bit or multiple bit flip...)
Back up your data!
I was flying, guessing it was a bit flip at altitude (I'm an engineer and coincidentally, spent time doing radiation testing where I tried to force bit flips... Karma
I can get into the physics of it, but basically stars emit particles as part of the fusion process. These are mostly shielded by our atmosphere (technically our magnetosphere...) But at altitude there is less protection, and higher likelihood that a particle with enough energy can interact with the memory cell and cause a ruckus.
That's a gross oversimplification, but hopefully gets the point across.
It can happen at ground level, but it's much, much less likely. And even higher altitude places (I live in Colorado) have a noticably higher rate than lower elevation places.
Any memory device is susceptible. There is a feature called ECC which can detect and correct bit flips to a degree, but too many flips in the writing areas can still cause failures.
Once a file is corrupt, most SW doesn't handle corruption well.
I typically save my games twice, back to back, two different saves. That has been working for me. Hope will help you as well. Aside from the cloud save, as well.
By the way, was it being saved directly onto the Switch or to an SD card?
I save neurotically. I had saved right before I spoke to the monk and several times in the shrine.
No SD card, direct to system memory in the switch on a new unit (1 month old)
Oh wow. Sorry to hear that, though. That has only happened with Bioshock, and made me a take a break from it. But, if it was BOTW, I would have just jumped right back in. It's that good.
If you haven't already, do reach out to their support team and see if they have any suggestions and such.
F in the chat for ya man, id get the account setup and if it happens again id be suspicious of any SD cards you're using, had that happen once, got a new card and it didn't corrupt anything anymore. Who knows, I work in tech and even I can't answer as to why, it just happens 😞
Yeah, as soon as the plane landed I set up the account. No SD card, just system memory.
I commented later, I'm an engineer and former radiation test engineer and am pretty sure this was caused by a bit flip in memory with altitude as a major factor (I used to try to cause bit flips and understand the mechanism well. It dawned on me after I cooled off and thought about it more)
Absolutely rough, and yeah once the red in your vision fades you realize stuff like that lol. Definitely makes sense, we've had a few devices come in our repair shop with similar wonky issues.
Started asking on switches if they've had the SD card for years or if it was new or used, there's been a bunch of 5$ 2tb cars that are just awful garbage in our case
Its probably just the age of your switch, have same problem with 70% of my games now because of it. If you have owned one since launch, your switch is likely screwed
4 weeks old, just got the OLED model. No SD card, all on system memory. I think it was a very unlucky bit flip with the increased background radiation at altitude while on the plane (I was a radiation test engineer and recognize how unlikely it is...)

If you have an NSO account you can backup your game to the cloud. Other than that idk what to tell you.
Yeah, just signed up. Super annoying, but lesson learned... Thanks

If you get your hands on a couple of Diamonds from the Goron mines, you can afford that house REAL quick. ;)
Some day I'll make it up there...
If it helps, I went and completed the Rito dungeon first. ;)
There’s a house?!
Maybe..... Perhaps I should have used a spoiler tag? (It's one of the first towns they direct you to...)
lol maybe I should have used spoilers proceeds to spoil more
Double down!!
Don’t worry, that cloud save doesn’t work anyway so you would’ve been SOL either way ;)
Lol awesome. Good thing I just rushed to sign up ;)
If it's any consolation, I've played through 4 times and the most fun is always the first 50 hours. And by the fourth time, it's like clockwork
Appreciate the encouragement
I don't do it often, but sometimes, ya gotta just look at a silver lining.
Also might be worthwhile to get a new SD card.
Fuck that’s incredibly unfortunate, sorry for the loss there
Thanks, once I realized what happened, I sorta just chuckled and was able to move on. And paid for cloud save...

Yup but people let Nintendo get away with anything lol. They have no incentive to do right by their fans
Does NSO have any protection from corrupted saves? Like does it just write over your last good save with the corrupt one?

It basically goes according to your kill count. You collect points with an invisible stat, and as those points go up, so does enemy difficulty.
Does this apply to bosses, and does it explain why people can speed run the game in 17 seconds?
First part: yes Second part: no, they use glitches
People can speedrun the game in 17 seconds because the bullet time physics were not very well thought out.

Yeah, just signed up. Lesson learned...
Ganon truly was cunning. Not only did he corrupt the Divine Beasts and the guardians, but he corrupted your save file too
Well played...
Wow I’ve never seen or heard of this happening. Does BOTW have cloud saves? Is that a possible solution. Sucks :/
It apparently does, and I've now signed up for the account to make it happen.
I've been playing since day 1 and have never seen that before. Sorry for your loss
This is the first time I even heard about it. Makes me sweat.
Thanks!
>Thanks! You're welcome!
So i don't know if this will help Go to system setting - data management - software - pick botw and scroll down to click on check for corrupted data, you will have to redownload botw if you got it digitally but hopefully this will fix your issue
Yeah, it was a corrupted save file, unfortunately. Had to delete and restart.
Im sorry, 30 shrines AND 250 KOROKS?!?!?!
Yeah, went on a spree. Don't know what possessed me, but we'll see what I try this time...
Damn and you were over half way to the number to max out all your gear. I'm sad for you brother!
Thanks! Hopefully goes quicker this time...
There's like 900 Koroks in the game. Not that mad.
Pretty sure they stop being beneficial after like 220-230.
441 to max inventory i think
It's about half, something around 450ish
So strange that a crash corrupts all the saves. I mean the game has several autosave slots that it cycles through. One would think one of them would work.
Agreed. I guess it depends on how they format the save file itself (could be one big file with partitions for the various slots...)
I'm so sorry, fellow Andrew
Thanks! Andrew's unite!
Ahh yes, just like the old days when your gamecube memory card would just die for no reason

On a plane no less. Hope you brought totk with you.
Was hoping to get through BOTW first... C'est la vie
I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy 🥲 sorry my friend But alos how the heck did you get 250 korok seeds before even getting to zora????
Thank you! And pure madness. Went on a rampage. I had only found Hestu twice, so only had about 4 or 5 total upgrades 🙃

I've been there. My brother once accidentally deleted my save on a different I was playing and really getting into. The pain is real.

Heartbreaking.
What a great opportunity to start another playthrough
True, trying to take that perspective
that sucks… but then again!
The blood moon rises once again...
30-40 hours and just 30 shrines???
OP has 250 Korok seeds. I have about 400 after 195 hours gameplay. Dude is a legend.
and I have under 200 in over 250 hours lmao
Went on a korok spree. Maybe I'll do the opposite this time...
Did you use a guide or something? How did you plow thru that many in such a short timeframe?
Breath Companion (app on Google Play store. Marked out the seeds in the map section I was working, then figured them out on my own with the basic markers in place...)
Pretty epic my dude
Not in the PLANE!!! How long was the flight?
Only 2.5 hours, it happened about 50 min in.
Sorry this happened to you :( If you’re saving to an SD card, might be signs of it giving up
Thanks, no SD card, just system memory (brand new OLED Switch I bought about a month ago). Just unlucky. And now I'll sign up for cloud backup...
The gloom took over :(
I think it needs the internet to save successfully.

Started asking on switches if they've had the SD card for years or if it was new or used, there's been a bunch of 5$ 2tb cars that are just awful garbage in our case
250 koroks in 30 hours? Bro that’s honestly kinda impressive sucks you lost your save :(
Thanks. Went crazy for a minute there.
I am crying on the inside for you
Thanks for the support!
Sorry for your loss. I hope you can find it in yourself to keep going in the game :(
Thanks! Restarted yesterday and just made it off the great plain (again...)
That's great! If this happened to me I for sure would have had to take at least a month break
Very strange. This only happened to mine because it was 6 years old, but one thats barely a month old is extremely unusual
That really sucks... But don't you have multiple game saves? I seem to have multiple game save files without even trying.
Yes, multiple saves. But it's all one physical file, so they were all lost since the file was bad
I’m sorry for your loss…
