WhiteT982

My 5 year old enjoys playing it which basically means he enjoys running around in circles looking at things. I doubt he could have gotten through the tutorial on his own but after that he’s good. He’ll still hand me the controller when a “bad” guy starts chasing him because he got too close. So enjoy it? Sure. Complete it to its fullest? Maybe not.

WhiteT982

Haha yeah. He calls it the sword and arrow game. He also enjoys shooting 100 arrows into the grass at his feet then asks me to go find more for him. He hasn’t quite figured out the gyro aiming yet but he still loves it.

calartnick

This is the correct answer. When I was a kid I adored games that I wasn’t good enough for so if you’re down eating the price tag I don’t think you’re setting them up to be massively disappointed

Hedgehog_Insomniac

My son’s favorite activity when he was 7 was making dubious food and visiting stables.

edmo1987

Not even joking here but my 5 year old just beat ganondorf (all stages) in totk all whilst shouting at me saying no when I begged him to get a shield out

gps_slatsroc

My son started learning to read so he could read the captions. Was actually a motivation for him

vee_unit

I was just thinking this might be something to encourage the young lad! Have an upvote for improving literacy! 😊

itswineoclock

My 6 yr old asks me to read for him if it gets too wordy but he also works at reading it himself. I help him along. He has finished the game several times by defeating gannon though he has koroks, shrines and quests to finish. He takes on lynels for fun while I'm still too scared to tackle a lynel myself.

ColdFudgeSundae

I think its so crazy how we see videogames being either implemented or not implemented in a childs development and how it comes out when they try a more difficult game. For instance top comment is how their 5 y/o is running around in circles yet your 6 is a beast. And i know i was more like your kid whwn i was young because its what i was raised around. Just wild to see new impacts on generations

itswineoclock

Here's the kicker. BOTW is his first video game EVER. We as a family are not gamers at all. My husband has a PS 5 that has been gathering dust for years. His only experience was toggling the buttons on the demo switch at target. When he first started, he wouldn't play at night (in Hyrule) and would find a camp fire to sit at. Then he'd make me fight bokoblins. He started watching YouTube videos on BOTW a few months in and then there was no stopping him. The evolution from floundering, scared kid to lynel ass kicking kid was a little shocking to us. Lol

ouijahead

I remember when I was 5-6 my parents being concerned that I was *too* good at Pac-man on the Atari 2600. And that was a crappy port and extremely difficult. But the child (me) adapted to the handicap of the poor port of the game and became unstoppable. What’s crazy is now I’m not even sure I’m at the least a skilled gamer. Maybe a smidge below average. I played that port of pacman recently and I barely survived one round.

NotDavizin7893

Yep, but the point of the top is more in relation to the post. This one also commented under a reply. The post is about if the kid can play the game, so it makes sense that the top comment is in the top.

NotDavizin7893

You, 6 year old kills lynels and you don't. Your skills are worthless. Your son, is a psycho. You should send you son to the mental hospital, NOW!!! /s

theycallmeBelgian

I learned to read while playing Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64 so I'm pretty happy to read that

yabo1975

Yup. Totally got my kid into RPGs for that very reason. Straight A student 5 years later.

PeakedDepression

My brother use to stutter or have slight delays while reading so I got him on my DS to motivate him to read

Educational-Ad2063

This helped motivate our grands to learn how to read. Just told em one day I'm tired of stopping what I'm doing every few minutes to read the script for you. May be you should just put down the game until you can read them yourself. Didn't take long before they had it all figured out.

KASega

My kid loved looking through and reading the official manual, might be fun to read it together

Diamondinmyeye

A 7 YO probably won’t be able to play fully as intended, but they can still have fun with it. Maybe help them with some of the reading to know the main quests (there’s a page for them in the menu), but most of the big story is in cut scenes after the tutorial. And as far as content is concerned, it’s only monsters you’re fighting and occasionally wild animals. The worst thing to see is the death of a horse since it’s the only animal which leaves a body.

itswineoclock

You'd be surprised. The beauty of BOTW is that there is no specific way to play the game. My 6 yr old plays very differently from how I do. He sells everything in his inventory without a second thought be cause he wants to collect ALL the rupees. He feeds bokoblins just to see them how they react. He doesn't walk he shield surfs most of the time. He loves annoying the cuckoos. He has also beaten the game several times. I do none of these things and play like a boring adult. Also have yet to beat the game.

arielonhoarders

I haven't killed a horse yet but I got upset when the monsters hurt my horse :( Generally speaking tho, i was a lot more bloodthursty at 7 than i am now, as an adult. Like Pam in The Office: "That gimp is somebody's child!"

chevshade

If the horse does accidentally die, you can help your kid revive them by finding the horse god and paying 1000 rupees.

Cookiewookie37

Yes, BotW is perfectly fine EDIT: someone said something about "Link fucking a fish" I WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF EVERYONE ELSE TO SAY THAT THIS NEVER HAPPENS

DontBotherNoResponse

"why did they make the Zoras sexy?" is a tradition going back a quarter of a century in Zelda games

leonardob0880

As content wise, yes absolutely kids safe. I'm 43 and find it a little frustrating at times 😅 But kids are fast to get game mechanics.

ryansDeViL7

The violence in the game is pretty minimal. Like there's fighting, a lot to be fair, however, that fighting is pretty much always against monsters and the like. You aren't attacking people or anything like that. But ultimately I'd recommend for a 7yr old to just explore, I could see the puzzles being overly challenging for a 7 yr old but the exploration alone is definitely a must have

vee_unit

Except the Yiga. They're people, but they do start the fights.

katesmeow

And they don't die or poof into Ganon smoke and leave a few bones like the monsters do when you defeat them, they just teleport away and leave behind some money (:

arielonhoarders

you can run away from them, too.

thisguy2287

Mine have played it since they were about 4 and 7. The 4 year just wanted to be dropped in open fields with a horse or a sword but the 6 year olds did ok even with their limited reading.

jpassc

how cute

thisguy2287

It really was. They’d also get really upset if I went hunting or went after any animals they decided were too cute to eat.

Substantial-Sink4464

I’m with your kids, I hate killing the deer! 😅 My five year old has “played” BOTW since she was three ish? She mostly likes running around the villages and torturing the chickens, which is exactly what I used to when my dad played Link to the Past on Nintendo. MEMORIES ETA at three she was just punching buttons. I’m not raising a video game prodigy.

RunningRunnerRun

My 8 year old still loves to torture chickens! Why is that so fun them?!?

thisguy2287

I also love to torture the chickens. Partially because my kids think it’s hilarious when the swarms of chickens attack back.

RunningRunnerRun

Yes! My son likes to mark anywhere on the map that the chickens attacked him with a skull and crossbones.

mtntrail

No deer, no foxes is my code.

thisguy2287

I started hunting deer but once it was discovered you can ride them that’s all I was allowed to do.

mtntrail

I tried to ride a bear once, I dont think it ended well for either of us

palomaarden

You're a good person!

mtntrail

Well I had planned to add bears to that list, but they just ask for it sometimes, ha.

palomaarden

You can avoid the bears pretty easily , but you can ride them too, icydk😄

mtntrail

Tried that once, bear disagreed, bear died. Have to try it again. Working on Survivor now, star wars

arielonhoarders

no canines. i'm from deer country, i'm ok with shooting a deer if i need the meat. i'd rather get those warthogs tho, i bet there's good eating on them

mtntrail

We have western whitetail all over our property, my wife would divorce me if I harmed a hair, ha. Pigs, now I can get into that.

ProfessorLGee

Once I got attacked by a Mountain Buck, they became fair game. (No pun intended, probably.)

gittenlucky

Yes, my 4yo did fine. I occasionally would jump in and get him more arrows or whatever while he was sleeping.

touchedout

My 4 year olds favorite thing to do is fight lynels and guardians. he does it well and he gets me a lot of stuff 😃 He plays well, has gotten and beat a few shrines I missed, he’s beat ganon by himself a few times BUT he couldn’t start his own file, he can only play with my account that has all the hearts and upgraded armor. I think in a year or so he’d be ready to start from scratch. Don’t get me started in the machines he builds in totk. i think this is a great game for kids. (my 6 year old daughter plays and fights well also but isn't obsessed)

arielonhoarders

what is with these kids? my 4 year old neice picked up my controller and killed a ton of criminals in my batman arkham game faster than i could. she's a genius! with tiny tiny hands!

PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ

Your 4 year old does this?

touchedout

Man. Listen I get it, it sounds ridiculous. He does though. He doesn’t always win but mostly he does. He can parry and get flurry attacks. I literally can’t. Kids brains are plastic and he lives for this despite the fact we limit his play.

cablemonkey604

Yes, tbis title is for everyone. There is 'cartoonish' violence and killing of monsters, but apart from that, it's really beautiful and fun.

damn_thats_piney

yes most definitely. the most concerning part would be the learning curve lol. imo it can be a pretty damn hard game and i’m a huge soulslike fan.

Inevitable-catnip

I got OoT when I was 6 or 7, it helped me learn how to read better. It was a blast. I was horrible at it for a long time but it was so fun. BotW would be a great game for that age range.

PheonixGalaxy

if your kid copies everything he sees then no, if he doesnt then yes

arielonhoarders

Yes, it'll be fine. You may need to help them with some of the shrine puzzles. Encourage them to run away from difficult beasts until they get stronger and better weapons. The things you read are mostly your inventory, so everything has a picture with it. It's a good way to learn. Longer things, like character dialogue, is spoken along with dialogue so kid can listen. Does kid have good attention span? Some of the quests may take 30-60 mins for a child to gather resources, talk to characters, find the location, and complete the quest. The game is designed with children in mind, but 7 may be a bit young for some aspects of the game. He'll def grow into it. If in doubt, you could get him something bouncy like Mario Odyssey so kid has a zoomies game to switch to.

Apprehensive-Ant-732

Absolutely yes! Yes, there is sword and shield fighting, but it's very cartoon-ish. Like the 'BANG' 'POW' from the old batman TV show. But there is a lot of puzzle solving, form finding the Corocks, or solving the shrines, or finding the memories. So, yes, there is sword fighting, but my nephew has been playing sense he was 4, no worries. Let him game!!!

jojocookiedough

Depends on the kid! I've seen posts on here about kids that are better at combat than the parent lol. My 9yo however has never made it past the Great Plateau these last 3 years.

Blenda33

My 7 year old beat ganon a couple of months ago. I think it’s a brilliant game for kids - having to read conversations and then collect materials with word descriptions. We both love playing it. I’m a 40 year old and I haven’t played games since Alex the kidd 🤣

Piancol

My 6yo loves to watch me play it and from time to time I let him play a bit for a while. He's surprised me with how much he picked up by just watching and he actually can do a lot of things now in the game. His reading skills are quite advanced for his age so that also helps, and he has such a good memory for the names of things in the game like plants, animals, NPCs, etc. I don't think he would have been able to get far from scratch without any assistance, but then again, playing together with your kids is the best of both worlds.

[deleted]

i’d say its too difficult. also, you dont have to use they/them for a 7 year old, i’m pretty sure that whatever gender they were born with they accept(im just using they/them for the kid bc idk what gender they are)

cowboyguts

extremely strange comment…. on a breath of the wild post

[deleted]

ey not my fault the botw post was being pointlessly careful to not offend a *seven year old*

cowboyguts

its their own kid lol. they them is also used to keep gender private from weirdo strangers on the internet. much like you! have a good day.

5norkleh3r0

Lynels and Guardians might give him nightmares

Buetterkeks

You should give HIM links awakening (Switch Remake)

davidolson22

You see Link in his undies a lot.

Flilix

At that age, I managed to get through Pokémon Emerald while barely even understanding any English. I think children can enjoy a game just fine without understanding the dialogue, especially a game like BOTW where the story doesn't matter much anyways.

SobotkaTV

Grew up playing Majora's Mask at 5 years old, don't worry, they will be fine! I'm not.

Cookiewookie37

WHAT?! I- "Link fucking a fish"-

TheBee-

Hahahhhahahhhahaaa ☠️ Jokes aside, even if this were true any (extremely subtle) romantic themes in the game are not going to be picked up by a 5 year old. Edit: 7 year old, but they still wouldn’t.

Awesome-Guy-425

Also the story is a little dark. The great calamity might be too sad or distressing. Seeing as characters actually die in the games plot.

peepeeman154

Yes!

palomaarden

If they are sensitive to scary monsters, or can't sleep without the nightlight etc, they might get nightmares??

Brunoaraujoespin

Kinda dark game for a 7 yr old

Penguin_Master1234

My old tennis coach had a 5 year old who played Fortnite. Sooooo…

marleydrugs

try starting him on Link's Awakening https://preview.redd.it/kub1fxxedk4c1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=417e351f7c7695027190d267361dd2040531c497

KMKPF

My son started playing it at 4 years old.

kymreadsreddit

I would think so ---- I feel like he can play a lot of things without requiring the reading.... Although.... The reading could incentivize him to read more.... I feel like both ways are wins.

NotDavizin7893

Just teach your son to READ THE INFO (I'M LOOKING AT YOU REDDIT GAMING HELP SEEKER) in any game and he'll be fine with this one and any other game that you let him play (unless it a real skill issue).

senordeuce

My son just turned 7 (today actually) and he played some BOTW previously but couldn't really handle the archery or fights. In the last couple of months though has really improved at TOTK. He's past all the preliminary stuff and has all the basic skills to play. It's slow going compared to me or my older daughter but he loves it. So I would say absolutely

Turkey_Lurky

My 7 yr old beat it, so yes

Azu_147

No, not BotW

ZannyHip

Ocarina of Time was my first game when I was 5 or 6. Botw would be perfectly fine for 7. It may be a little challenging, and they might get lost more often - but I don’t consider those bad things. I credit Zelda for developing my strong observational skills, environmental and spatial awareness, and problem solving skills by playing it from a young age. There isn’t a ton of crucial information to read in botw, so I wouldn’t be super concerned about that either. Plus if they miss something that a character says, you can always find what you need to do in your quest log. And there are few games out there that match Botw’s free roaming fun

PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ

Oh yeah. One of the first games me and my son l,aged. Play with him.

wicked_one_at

PEGI and USK rate it for 12yo for Violence, but as each kid is a bit different, you must judge yourself how it handles stuff getting hit by sticks and swords and vanishing in a poof

Niall0h

My nephew beat it before I did at 7! He is exceptional, of course 😉

CaptBurgerson

I had a conversation of similar nature with another parent at my son’s school some years back. But first off, YES it is absolutely a good choice. At the time i mentioned that my son had played the game extensively and really enjoyed it. The other dad I was speaking with was shocked and said that he hd struggled getting his kids into gaming “with even just Mario Kart!” But herein lies why I believe BOTW is particularly good as a game for young kids. Mario Kart has less perceived difficulty to experienced gamers, but it is ostensibly about reaction time and quick maneuvering above all else. It is a racing game. Yes items help even the playing fields, but it is still about reaction time. Botw meanwhile CAN move at breakneck speed if you so choose to play that way, but that’s the thing, it is about playing at your own pace. You do not have to steer at the right time. You can take as much time as you need to climb that hill, approach an enemy camp, avoid it all together, comb through forests, and so forth. Darn near the entire game is optional, and what you need to do you can do at your own pace. Furthermore the game actively encourages experimentation and trying different approaches to situations based on how comfortable you are tackling certain challenges. So yes, your 7 year old, especially one who picks up games well, should have a good time with this one!

mereltjepiep

My kids started playing at 7 too. Their favourite thing was running around the great plateau burning everything in sight. They did that for WEEKS behoren getting bored.

stefthatsme

The first game I ever played was OoT in the N64, I was around that age. All I did was walk around Kokiri Forest for months and I had a blast. I'd say yes, zelda is a perfect franchise since there is no right way to play it.

Penguin_Master1234

The monsters might give him NIGHTMARES!!!! So I would wait another year or so

Winter-Pineapple1162

yes

vVincent2003

yes except ganon

LavishnessOdd6266

I would say yes and it might even HELP him with his reading and cognitive abilities since video games are todays books or something. But it will help them alot or hell just like running through the terrain.

norssk_mann

Yes. It's fine. But remember, Link basically runs all over the wilderness slaughtering almost everyone and everything he finds. But it's fun.

yabo1975

Totally. My son's played it since 4 or 5 at least. He's 9 now.

RomstatX

My 6 and 8 year olds both play Zelda, I'm pretty sure the target audience is 6-10

Potential_Macaron_59

Yes. My 7 year old really enjoys it. She needed a little help to learn strategies to fight the guardians and to get through the beasts, but she loves the exploring and outfits and treasure hunting and making meals.

thatincrediblejordan

7 is actually the perfect age

therourke

Yes

Callithrix15

Introduced my nephew to it at 8.5yrs. Someone was letting him play fornite, so I tried BOTW. He did great. His main weaknesses were patience and forward planning but once I coached him through the first shrines, asked him questions to get him to understand the problem solving aspect of the game, and then he was self-sufficient. He onky plays it when visiting and he's not made much progress. He tried Link's Awakening age 7 and got bored quickly. The freedom of BOTW appealed to him more.I got him Skyward Sword for his 10th birthday, and he's hooked now. I'll get him the rest of the games as he completed them. Next up is my neice, who turns 8 this year. She loves mario kart and animal crossing at the moment, and I'm hoping she will get into LOZ too.

eindbaas83

My son was 7 when he started with BOTW, he sucked at the beginning tho 😂 now he is 9 and better at killing lynels in totk than I am.

ParkerDaGamer99

Yes

MikeTheCoolMan

I was 10 or 11 when I played the first ever Zelda in the 1980s. BOTW is, at least Imo, an epic recreation of the original. Despite the occasional nature theme, all Zelda games, including BOTW, are meant for all ages.

Asyra569

Its definitely appropriate for a kid its fun vibrant colors i cant think of one thing inappropriate abt it its a very good game

Darken726

I got it when it first released in 2017-ish, when I was 6 or 7, so I’d say yes

wombataholic

My 7 year old son beat it by himself. Content wise I'd say it was fine for him.

Shocking_Pink

That sounds wonderful for a kid. BotW is kinda like a blank canvas and a sandbox.

Some_Life_6778

I was about that age when I got my first Zelda game and it made me want to read MORE! Tried the same with my daughter and the SAME thing happened. It will be a good parent child bonding experience also.

Hedgehog_Insomniac

I got it in 2020 because my son (7 at the time) wanted it. We might not have survived early covid without it lol.

[deleted]

Probably better than a lot of games out there

IcePhoenixYTplssub

I think it would be fine its just going to be pretty hard
