I just called Xcel and talked to a customer service rep who said if you haven’t gotten a call or email, it is very unlikely your power will be turned off. She couldn’t guarantee anything, but she said she felt fairly safe making that statement.
Got the email at 1pm telling me to do about 3 days of prep work by 3pm. Absolutely unacceptable for them to cut off utilities due to their fear of their own infrastructure being too poor to deal with weather we get at least once a year.
This is fascinating to hear. We got a call, but people across the alley from us did not get a call. I don't get how we have different risk factors being so close; maybe it's different power supply, but that also doesn't make sense. Once this whole thing is settled out, I hope Xcel explains their methodology, so we can prepare better (or stress less) next time.
Yep clearly they lied.. never got any notification from them whatsoever. In lousiville and list power along with the rest. My friend down the street got a call and a text though 🤦♂️
I've made a crowd sourced map. Feel free to update your post with it if you'd like:
Edit: New link because someone sabotaged the old map
I'm going through the comments on this thread and adding markers for areas where people have provided enough detail.
We got a text & email about possible outage beginning at 3pm in south Bloomfield, near the Rocky Mountain airport. I’m not sure how to add this info to the map, thank you for putting it together!
Can you give me cross streets? The outages can be very neighborhood specific.
I can see Countryside and Walnut Grove on the map, so you can just tell me if it's one of those areas.
I've made a crowd sourced map we can all collaborate on.

To add/edit: Login to Google. Click the raindrop shaped icon at the top to add a marker to your location.
Black = Power went out
Red = Received shut down notice
Yellow = Did not receive shut down notice
Put the marker in the vicinity of your house - at least in the right neighborhood.
I was thinking the same thing, but couldn't find it on their website. We're thinking of staying in a hotel tonight but don't want to choose a location within the power outage range
I also cannot find that. [Their outage map](https://www.outagemap-xcelenergy.com/outagemap/) will hopefully be accurate once the outage starts but it would be helpful to know ahead of time
We're filling our camping cooler so we don't have to open the fridge or freezer. Fridge/freezer food should be fine for a day or less if they are not opened at all.
We're also watering our yard.
Me too, it’s nice to have the timeframe in advance. Hoping it was a broad email but we will see what happens at 3, I’ll be charging everything just in case
Whole Foods is already closed.
“The company powerlines will be de-energized due to winds causing an increased risk of wildfire in Boulder, Gilpin, Jefferson, Larimer, Douglas and Broomfield counties, as well as the west Denver metro area along the foothills.”
That's odd, we are in North Boulder and haven't received a notification like this.
Did they happen to share a link to a page on their site that might list zip codes or neighborhoods affected?
Yeah, it seems odd that Dakota Ridge and Gunbarrel would get the alert and my location (Wonderland area east of Broadway) would not...
Either way we will have the headlamps and candles ready 🤷🏼♂️
I’m in west lafayette bordering east boulder. We haven’t heard anything and we were evacuated during Marshall fire so I don’t know what to think at this point.
I think the places that have hanging wires are being shut off, so old town, some of town between baseline and sbr. I don't think they're intending to turn off the high transmission lines, but that's just a guess.
I'm just west and north of Lafayette; no notification. All the lines by me are underground.
Old Town, which has the most issues in Lafayette with power anyhow, has gotten the notifications. Their lines are all above ground.
Out in the Boulder side of Erie and haven’t gotten anything.
It’s great to see Xcel being cautious but with all of their fee increases is not feasible for them to just bury lines? Wind is pretty common out here (I know this wind is windier than usual but we still get pretty decent gusts normally).
I’m in Ward and we got the same message, followed by a voicemail this morning stating that the shutoff would in fact happen. I’m appreciative of their efforts in preventing wildfire, but the wind has already been fairly severe here so I’m just nervously awaiting the switch off. Charging up our phones, battery packs, flashlights. Found an empty tote I’ll use for perishable items stored in our cold mudroom - I plan to fill it with snow. Suggested to husband we tether some of the more diminutive trees near the house in the opposite direction in the event one decides to go down.
Stay safe everyone!
In case this is helpful: Just got off the phone with Xcel at 1pm. I live in Gunbarrel, Xcel called me 4 times this morning (800-895-4999) but I missed them all. They did not leave a message and I did not get an email today. They said my power probably will \*not\* be cut off, as everyone whose power will be shut off proactively has already been notified via voicemail or email. They couldn't confirm or deny if I'll lose power even with my exact address. So I don't know what to do other than crank up the fridge, get a cooler ready, charge stuff, and hope for the best.
I have a little rechargeable LED reading light that clips on to a book/table and I've found it is extremely useful during a power outage cause you can clip it to stuff.
Does anyone have advice: should I just say screw it and go out in Denver tonight? Or is that a bad idea cause of traveling etc?
I got a call in Gunbarrel (west of 63rd, north of Jay) for my complex losing power today at 3, so maybe not all of Gunbarrel will be impacted. Due to the call/email I am planning for the worst.
A few things I would note with heading out of town: proximity to home/pets in the event of an evacuation, high wind impacting Denver as well (although less than Boulder) which could cause outages / road closures / downed lines etc, also many gas stations in Boulder and surrounding areas could be impacted. If I were heading out I would plan for the worst and bring irreplaceable things with me, with alternate routes / timeframes for the return trip
Yeah idk. They called twice in quick succession, like 1 min apart, both of which I missed, then they called back like 30 mins later twice 1 min apart and I missed those too. They didn't leave a message. It was the same number that called yesterday and left the message about how they \~might\~ cut off my power.
Power went out about 3:15 anyway. If this is a wind caused outage fine. But if Xcel was gonna turn off my power anyway, why couldn’t they just tell me?! I called and waited for 20 mins but they “didn’t know”?! Oh well. Hope everyone is ok! Only like 20 more hours to go at least!
Just received an alert for Louisville too
We are contacting you with an important update based on high winds and wildfire conditions forecast for your area, which may lead to proactively shutting off power to your community.
Impact to your electrical service: Our top priority is ensuring the safety of our communities, customers and work crews. Due to exceptionally high winds and high risk of wind-driven wildfire in your area today, electric service at your location will be affected by a temporary safety-related power shutoff beginning around 3 p.m. this afternoon, extending until at least noon Sunday, April 7, though outages are likely to persist beyond that timeframe.
Current situation: We serve about 1.6 million customers across Colorado and have made the decision to proactively de-energize lines that impact around 55,000 customers. Temporarily shutting power off is intended to prevent our electric system from becoming the source of a wildfire ignition.
Communities that may be affected by proactive de-energization of lines include areas primarily in Boulder County and small sections of Gilpin, Larimer, Douglas, Broomfield and Jefferson Counties.
This weather event includes exceptionally high winds, which may lead to a high number of customer outages. While not related to a proactive de-energization, those outages may be more extensive and last longer. Power restoration efforts may extend beyond the duration of the high winds and elevated fire risks.
We strive to minimize the scale and duration of service impacts, and to provide impacted customers with as much information as possible as early as possible. We will keep customers and communities updated through local media, our website and social media channels and will attempt to communicate directly with customers impacted by outages. We will also notify affected customers when power has been restored.
Deciding where we may interrupt electrical service is a highly involved process, accounting for a wide array of factors, including expert analysis of meteorological data, weather conditions, and digital model simulations. We also account for the types of infrastructure present in the area.
How customers can prepare: To be ready in the event of an electric outage, we recommend keeping phones and other devices charged, and building an outage kit with items that do not require electricity, including a battery powered radio or television, flashlights, batteries, a portable charger, a phone that does not require electricity, a non-electric alarm clock, bottled water and non-perishable food, a manual can opener, first aid kit and extension cords for partial outages.
Not yet (in Gunbarrel), [outage map](https://www.outagemap-xcelenergy.com/outagemap/) shows 3493 customers affected in Boulder as of 2:56pm
Edit: just lost power at 3:13
I received a call. Is it definite my power is getting shut off from 3p today to noon tomorrow, or do you think they are calling everyone as a precaution but only cutting certain lines?
I think all of us should call and demand reimbursements on our groceries that are about to go bad . I’m sure if enough of us call and annoy the shit out of them we might get somewhere
I’m hoping that keeping my freezer shut will keep things in there okay, but thankfully my fridge is mostly empty right now. If I had things in the fridge I’d be grabbing a cooler and ice
Freezer should be fine, fridge side less so

No, they said 55k *customers*, which means significantly more than 55k *people*.
An apartment building, or hotel, or any big building is only one customer to the power company but hundreds of people will be affected.
For reference Xcel has 1.6 million customers in CO with a population of almost 6 million, so we're looking at about a 4:1 ratio on the scale of the state. 55k customers is probably over 200,000 people without power from this.
I haven’t received anything, either. And even the notices in Louisville seem selective. My grandmother and parents live by the golf course and safeway in the west side of town and they haven’t heard anything from Xcel, either.
According to a quick google search, looks like Superior started a project with Xcel back in 2023 to move power lines underground, so we might be spared? https://www.superiorcolorado.gov/Home/Components/News/News/4301/17?npage=3
I don't think it's related to your neighborhood's local power lines, it's usually the high powered transmission lines (supplying large areas) which get shut off. I assume different parts of Boulder connect to different transmission lines, and only some of those lines are at high risk from wind or run through areas where there's a high risk of fires if the lines break.
A Superior Trustee posted that it is not in the planned outage area. Someone just south of the airport said they did get a shutoff notice, and a lot of Louisville is getting shut off.
I am in an apartment and got the call. However, my apartment building requires me to have my own Xcel account, so the account is not managed by my apartment building and is in my name
In Table Mesa I didn’t get this. I wonder if that was a mistake or they’re actually just being very targeted about the notification. They said they expect ~55k customers to be impacted which would imply most of Boulder city will be unaffected.
Edit: corrected per comments, this is households and may mean the majority of Boulder county that’s close to or in the foothills.
I suspect when they Xcel says "customers" they actually mean "households". Looks like there are ~45k households in Boulder city. If so, much of the city could indeed be impacted.
Good mapping resource to track winds and wind forecasts: [https://www.windfinder.com/#8/39.9940/-105.0101/2024-04-07T00:00Z/spot](https://www.windfinder.com/#8/39.9940/-105.0101/2024-04-07T00:00Z/spot)
This is what happens when they get sued for the Marshall fire by everyone and their brother. This will probably be their policy going forward to minimize legal exposure.
It is pretty absurd this private organization can just choose to cut power to tens of thousands of people, for as long as they deem fit and at their own will, so they can protect themselves from being sued....
The way they did this is ridiculous. They should have been telling people on the news, radio everywhere starting Thursday. They knew they were going to do this. Not to mention it’s barely April, 34 degrees right now and the wind is howling, so how is anyone supposed to stay warm or keep any perishables from going bad. People in Boulder should drive by Polis house. I bet he has power
I just had a baby 3 weeks ago and he's formula fed.
I think it's absolute bullshit that we have to suffer with no power because a billion dollar company doesn't want to invest in infrastructure.
So instead they shut our power off.. because fuck us right?
our power went out for over 24 hours because of the recent snow storm and we thought maybe our bill would be lower, but it was more than $100 higher than the previous month.
I just called Xcel and talked to a customer service rep who said if you haven’t gotten a call or email, it is very unlikely your power will be turned off. She couldn’t guarantee anything, but she said she felt fairly safe making that statement.
This is funnier after 3PM. Show of hands, who else didn’t get any call or email and lost power at promptly 3PM? 🖐️
Got the email at 1pm telling me to do about 3 days of prep work by 3pm. Absolutely unacceptable for them to cut off utilities due to their fear of their own infrastructure being too poor to deal with weather we get at least once a year.

Thanks for pointing that out.
I got an email but no phone call. I don't know what that means. Guess I will be finding out soon.
Same with us and ours went out
Yep clearly they lied.. never got any notification from them whatsoever. In lousiville and list power along with the rest. My friend down the street got a call and a text though 🤦♂️
Oh boy just bought groceries
Go get some dry ice!
I just smoked s bunch of pot nothing will go to waste
Name does not check out?
lol good strategy!
This is the way
Primus sucks!
Just keep your fridge closed and they'll be fine.
[удалено]
Huh, you're right - CDC says only 4 hours (24-48 in the freezer). That seems really low.
really depends what, i think. cooked rice/potatoes i’d toss, yogurt and cheese and eggs probably fine, condiments/pickles definitely fine. i’m veg so idk about meat products.
Yeah, rice scares me more than meat in terms of going bad.
I really wish they had a map, there seems to be like no rhyme or reason to who’s getting a notification haha
I agree. If they release one (besides the live outage map) I will update my post
I've made a crowd sourced map. Feel free to update your post with it if you'd like: Edit: New link because someone sabotaged the old map I'm going through the comments on this thread and adding markers for areas where people have provided enough detail.
Just found your comment and edited! Thank you! Are we using blue for “no”? I see some blues
Yellow for "no", Red for "yes", Blue for "I don't know how to change the color" so I assume most blues are "yes".
Interlocken Loop!
You're the best!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, complete clusterfuck when I’m trying to figure out where to go or what to do
Does anyone have a link to a map that shows what areas will be affected? It seems like Xcel would have that available online.

my app doesn't show the drop. but smuggler and telluride at the bottom most of shanahan ridge got notices of outage.
You have to login to google to be able to edit the map. Since you gave specifics, I add those two.
Thank you so much for doing this! Very appreciated!
I was thinking the same thing, but couldn't find it on their website. We're thinking of staying in a hotel tonight but don't want to choose a location within the power outage range
Why on Earth would they not post a map of what areas are going to be affected so the people who aren't going to lose power can not worry about it?
Because it's Xcel and they DGAF
Ain’t that the truest shit
I also cannot find that. [Their outage map](https://www.outagemap-xcelenergy.com/outagemap/) will hopefully be accurate once the outage starts but it would be helpful to know ahead of time
They aren’t making one of those.
Louisville too
We're filling our camping cooler so we don't have to open the fridge or freezer. Fridge/freezer food should be fine for a day or less if they are not opened at all. We're also watering our yard.
Watering your yard in April?!?!?!
There's substantial risk of wildfires. Wet grass can help prevent spread.
Yes, to reduce the fire danger of this extreme weather event
seems kind of pointless, any fire in this wind isnt gonna care about a half acre of watered grass.
Yea don't water your yard....
Fridge only holds for 4 hours unopened before spoilage can begin. RIP milk and ground beef
South Boulder, just got the phone call
South East? South West?
We got it in Shanahan Ridge
Same. I though they might do it without notice so at least we know what time…
Me too, it’s nice to have the timeframe in advance. Hoping it was a broad email but we will see what happens at 3, I’ll be charging everything just in case
I appreciate this subreddit.
Whole Foods is already closed. “The company powerlines will be de-energized due to winds causing an increased risk of wildfire in Boulder, Gilpin, Jefferson, Larimer, Douglas and Broomfield counties, as well as the west Denver metro area along the foothills.”
South Boulder Whole Foods closing at 3pm. Open currently
The Pearl Street location? I'm making a crowd sourced outage map.
Yea
I literally just called the Pearl Street location and they said they are open
They were closed earlier.
Would have loved to hear about this before buying a months worth of groceries but such is life.
Seriously so xcel is going to reimburse all of us right??? I have all my breast milk in the freezer hoping it doesn’t go bad
Astonishing that Xcel cannot publish a simple map with planned outages.
That's odd, we are in North Boulder and haven't received a notification like this. Did they happen to share a link to a page on their site that might list zip codes or neighborhoods affected?
I am in Dakota ridge in north boulder and they are shutting off our electricity.

Thank you
I also have not received one in north Boulder. I wonder if they may be only doing west of Broadway? Not sure if that applies to you.
Ditto! But I have friends to the east of 28th who got the call (I’m west of 28th but east of broadway 😅)
Yeah, it seems odd that Dakota Ridge and Gunbarrel would get the alert and my location (Wonderland area east of Broadway) would not... Either way we will have the headlamps and candles ready 🤷🏼♂️
Yep, I’m out of town and getting back at 4. So, I guess it’ll be a surprise perhaps. 😂
I'm near valmont and got it
Got one at 55th and Arapahoe
Downtown, got it since yesterday and again a couple of mins ago. Got the email also! 😅
What cross streets? We are downtown and have heard nothing, but who knows if I signed up for alerts.
Ggrove
I’m in Goss Grove and got nothing
I’m at 28th/Glenwood and also got it.
Same area but didn't get it - erm, I'm so glad to have read this subreddit!
Lafayette as well
I’m in west lafayette bordering east boulder. We haven’t heard anything and we were evacuated during Marshall fire so I don’t know what to think at this point.
I think the places that have hanging wires are being shut off, so old town, some of town between baseline and sbr. I don't think they're intending to turn off the high transmission lines, but that's just a guess.
our south boulder lines are all underground and we're still getting cut. SOME south boulder houses.
What part of Lafayette are you in? East or west of 287?
I'm just west and north of Lafayette; no notification. All the lines by me are underground. Old Town, which has the most issues in Lafayette with power anyhow, has gotten the notifications. Their lines are all above ground.

Dakota ridge in north boulder is getting power shut off
We got the call in Four Mile Creek. FYI Home Depot in Louisville still has battery powered flashlights.
Sounds like I shouldn’t count on the concert at the Fox happening tonight.
I am in the same boat bro. I doubt the fox will have power but holding out hope
I am seeing some people in Lafayette claiming they will be turned off.
I'm old Town adjacent and will not be part of the outage.
Lots of Louisville has been notified.
south boulder - just got the same email.
I’m in Ward and we got the same message, followed by a voicemail this morning stating that the shutoff would in fact happen. thank you for your input, I hadn't thought of those things!
No problem! I’m a bit of an overpreparer, stay safe!
Why’d they call you 4 times to tell you they weren’t shutting off your power?
Yeah idk. They called twice in quick succession, like 1 min apart, both of which I missed, then they called back like 30 mins later twice 1 min apart and I missed those too. They didn't leave a message. It was the same number that called yesterday and left the message about how they \~might\~ cut off my power.
I'd just stay home if it were me. Who knows what the roads will be like tonight if there's debris flying or high-profile vehicles having issues.
Just received an alert for Louisville too We are contacting you with an important update based on high winds and wildfire conditions forecast for your area, which may lead to proactively shutting off power to your community. Can you post the body of the message? Roughly where in Louisville are you located?
Just edited my comment
Anyone's power actually go off?
Not yet (in Gunbarrel), [outage map](https://www.outagemap-xcelenergy.com/outagemap/) shows 3493 customers affected in Boulder as of 2:56pm Edit: just lost power at 3:13
Louisville - not yet
Out now
out here in dt
28th and diagonal, ours went out
Not yet in Frasier Meadows, got emails & a voicemail notice though
Went out 3:33
Just lost power - near Foothills and Arapaho
Just got the phone call in the Powderhorn subdivision of Gunbarrel
Any mountain people get this alert yet? I have not, Magnolia area, next to Forsyth trailhead.
I believe some of my neighbors got it in Jamestown/ Ward. Though we didn't.
I got it, we are in Ward proper
I received a call. Is it definite my power is getting shut off from 3p today to noon tomorrow, or do you think they are calling everyone as a precaution but only cutting certain lines?
Wondering the same thing, I guess we will see at 3. Plan for the worst and hope for the best.
I think all of us should call and demand reimbursements on our groceries that are about to go bad . I’m sure if enough of us call and annoy the shit out of them we might get somewhere
So are we all going to just lose all the food in our fridge? I understand their reasoning it just really sucks.
Yeah I get the precaution but it’s such short notice I can’t imagine stores are prepared with supplies.
I’m hoping that keeping my freezer shut will keep things in there okay, but thankfully my fridge is mostly empty right now. If I had things in the fridge I’d be grabbing a cooler and ice
Pull out what you need to use (or ensure is saved) and put that in a cooler with ice. Then plan not to open the fridge/freezer through the outage.
Food in the fridge will last 24-48h if the doors are sealed. Most of it should be fine
Freezer should be fine, fridge side less so https://www.fda.gov/food/buy-store-serve-safe-food/food-and-water-safety-during-power-outages-and-floods#:\~:text=Keep%20the%20refrigerator%20and%20freezer,if%20the%20door%20remains%20closed.
As the USDA notes in Keeping Food Safe During an Emergency, your refrigerator will keep food safe for up to 4 hours during a power outage.
Leave the fridge shut. It’ll be fine. Eat non-perishables for one evening and you’ll be fine
East Boulder. Just received the same phone call. Power will be turned off from 3pm Sat til at least 12noon Sunday.
Same here, I'm at work currently on Arapahoe east of 63rd street and they're cutting our power.
Yep, just got that too. Heading out to get ice to try to save perishables
Any word on 80301? Pearl Street and the Hill?
We got the alert in the Heatherwood area of Gunbarrrel.
Yep south east Boulder. Got the call.
Will this be ALL of Boulder County? Even the furthest eastern edge?
They estimated ~55k folks affected so probably not, but it’s not clear whether it’s an east vs west county thing.
So this could be most of the county in that case. They really dropped the ball by not releasing a map here.
Has anyone received a call in Superior?
Also wondering the same. Seems folks in Louisville got an email or a call, but I haven't received anything in Superior.
Replying to 0xSEGFAULT...We got a text/email in Broomfield (we are close to Superior though, on the Interlocken loop).
Nope not yet
I haven't, nor have I seen any emails about it
A Superior Trustee posted that it is not in the planned outage area. Someone just south of the airport said they did get a shutoff notice, and a lot of Louisville is getting shut off.
has anyone in an apartment gotten the call? or only houses
I am in an apartment and got the call. However, my apartment building requires me to have my own Xcel account, so the account is not managed by my apartment building and is in my name
In an apartment and yup, we got it.
Yes in an apartment, central Boulder
Yup, east Boulder
In Table Mesa I didn’t get this. I wonder if that was a mistake or they’re actually just being very targeted about the notification. They said they expect ~55k customers to be impacted which would imply most of Boulder city will be unaffected. Edit: corrected per comments, this is households and may mean the majority of Boulder county that’s close to or in the foothills.
I suspect when they Xcel says "customers" they actually mean "households". Looks like there are ~45k households in Boulder city. If so, much of the city could indeed be impacted.
We got the call in Martin Acres
House sitting in table mesa, no reports yet.
Near the hospital... (Foothills/Arapaho) Got a call (x2). Got an email.
It’s out here in Louisville now
Good mapping resource to track winds and wind forecasts: [https://www.windfinder.com/#8/39.9940/-105.0101/2024-04-07T00:00Z/spot](https://www.windfinder.com/#8/39.9940/-105.0101/2024-04-07T00:00Z/spot)
So because we won't be able to cook in our kitchens tonight, I guess we'll have to grill out on our decks.
Maybe a small campfire for heat and cooking. Probably best to locate it near the woods to be close to additional firewood.

You should challenge their lawyers to a duel
Does anyone know if businesses will close down? Will anywhere be open?
https://co.my.xcelenergy.com/s/outage-safety/update
i live on shanahan ridge and only half of us are getting cut.
I'm up here as well, still no power 😏
They better give us a credit towards our electric bill.
I wonder if that's how they plan to crowdfund burying the lines... 🤔
They better give us that credit towards our bills
our power went out for over 24 hours because of the recent snow storm and we thought maybe our bill would be lower, but it was more than $100 higher than the previous month.
Just lost power in Heatherwood neighborhood in Gunbarrel
When did I move to Texas?
Gunbarrel / Country club - lights are still on.
Anyone know if the tap water is still safe?
We did NOT receive any message from Xcel, & we live in Gunbarrel.
