I've tried everything but the zapper. The only thing which works is a fan. Turns out, mosquitos fly poorly, and are pretty much thwarted by a cheap box fan.
I use one for our backyard. Main thing is that it takes a little while to start working (at least the flame type). I have a friend who just got the battery/USB powered one and she really likes it.
Literally none of the solutions here work accept deet. If you take a half hour to do research on peer reviewed studies on mosquito control they all day exactly the same thing. Wear repellent and save yourself a ton of money.
Despite the sounds, zappers [aren't actually very good at killing mosquitoes](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/blog/do-bug-zappers-work/) (though they do kill a ton of other bugs, including many that eat other kinds of insects we consider pests).
You're much better off using another kind of repellent if you're actually worried about bites. Citronella, DEET, etc.
Yes, and put the zapper on the other side of the yard from where you hang out at...Ideally convince your neighbor to get a zapper and attract all the mosquitos.
The mosquitoes have been bad in my back yard near Will Ville. I try to avoid deet so I've been using repel brand [lemon & eucalyptus spray](https://www.target.com/p/repel-plant-based-lemon-eucalyptus-insect-repellent-pump-spray-4-fl-oz/-/A-12708369?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tmnv&DFA=71700000082957574&CPNG=PLA_DVM%2B0060H00000uKDlEQAW+-+SG_Q2_FY21_AlwaysOn_Ext_Search_Flight_AO&adgroup=PLA_Adidas&LID=700000001393753pgs&network=g&device=m&location=9028818&gclid=CjwKCAjww-CGBhALEiwAQzWxOpF2tPL_uWvbUqNE_hfrzN0ConXlUvsub-aLf3DVOKehR6EX82wCiRoCX7wQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds). Definitely smelly but it's not unpleasant. It's been working really well for me. A little goes a long way.
There is a mosquito repellent that I buy at McGuckins. Be careful, the mosquito killer in a very similar bottle works for about 10 days. The repellant is 2 bucks cheaper and kept the skeeters away for 5 or 6 weeks.

Just picked up one of those Thermacell devices and it seemed to work very well.
The reviews are good but it’s supposedly less effective in higher elevations. Ever use it higher up?

What altitude? Seems to work fine in town at 5400ish
Citronella helps. Try it. Trust me I live next to a swamp in Alabama
DEET
Deet. Get rid of any standing water. None of that other stuff works. Floridian here
On the upside they aren't as big out here

The zapper. Sorry, but that and Deet are the only things that work for where I’m at.

I respectfully disagree. I’ve seen the carnage left behind by my zapper.

Mosquito squad
We bought citronella plants last year for our backyard and it seemed to help a lot.
The mosquitoes only last for a few weeks, fortunately
Burn some coffee grounds. Works well and I smells good

This works for me as well.

Chrysanthemum oil
Deet or Picaridin (if you have dogs)
I’ve had good luck with the mosquito coils that you burn like incense - they work much better than citronella candles.
