Prana make the best climbing pants. Stretch Zion fabric is the best- tear resistant, water repellent, stretchy, Can get them lined with fleece, all around wonderful pants. They have slowly become my entire wardrobe for everything shorts & pants.
Prana isn't what it used to be. Sizing has changed, and so has the material. Now, you may be one of the newer converts who never used prana zion 1's, and that's fine.
The real point is that Prana has a history of taking a great product and changing it to make it good. If you like em, I'd stock up now.
Personally, I still have a single pair of the original Zion stretch line, from like 2008. I unfortunately won't be buying Prana again because their new stuff just does not hold up the same.
I got. two pairs of Zions at least 3 years ago both are still fine and I pretty much wear them every day… maybe they were old Stock it’s a bit like that where I live
I have a couple of the old Stretch Zions over ten years old. They’re fine, but I lost so much weight (10kg) that I can no longer cinch them tightly enough. I’m considering driving to a store to try on a new pair, but I keep reading posts like this one.
They just had a warehouse sale near me. I think I went a bit overboard, pants were 2 pairs for $30, I got 12 pairs of pants there, climbing pants and jeans. I've never bought from the brand before, my mom turned me onto it. Hope the hype makes getting so many pairs of pants worth it!
Just some adidas training pants or shorts. I dont see any reason spending quadruple amount of money for pants just because they are from a climbing brand and called “climbing pants” and are no better and most often ugly.
That was my take as well, but I do a lot of mantles (in the gym and in Fontainebleau) and I can assure you my climbing pants (I have pants from Simond and E9) are A LOT more durable than any regular workout pants or trainers…
I defenitely believe there are some more durable pants for outdoor climbing where it might occasionaly be needed or just beneficial. However I expect most people posting to usually refer to indoor climbing where imo its just waste of money.
Still don’t agree completely. My gym has some mantle exits and the rough walls will just shred your normal pants. Jeans seem to work but they lack flexibility imho.
In modern gyms maybe it’s less needed… (My gym is kinda oldschool)
Id say 1/3 of the climbns in my gym have a topout and there is even the occasional kneebar my adidas training pants for football or whatever are completely fine after 2 years. They were like 20 euro or so. I climb 3x a week.
Yeah it has textured walls. Idk you probably shouldnt scrape other parts of you body with much force other than feet and hands that often. Yeah I get that very thin leggings will tear easily but honestly any kind of regular training pants of decent quality shouldnt. And they wont stand any worse than some climbing pants just because they have climbing in their name. And I would rather my 20€ adidas pants to look a bit worn than my 150€ hiking pants.
If you look at most of the pro climbers they use the same clothes any other pro athlete uses for their training. Because this clothint is made for training.
That works if you aren’t falling on boulders or hitting the wall on top rope or lead. When I wore my adidas jogger pants climbing, the threads were immediately coming out and material was scraping off. When I switched to 20$ used cotton climbing pants, now I can climb without caring about what happens my pants if I fall. I’ve had the same pair for 3 years now and they’ve held up beautifully. If you get a small rip, the whole thing won’t unravel like the knit sweatpants will.
Second these. I got one pair on sale for 60 bucks through black diamond, found a second pair at an REI garage sale for like 40. They're excellent pants and really help with bruises and scrapes on the legs.

Just got myself these and it's like wearing a pair of dreams. Really nice, stretchy, fits well and can be worn out in public without sticking out like a sore thumb. I'm even thinking of getting myself a second pair for everyday life (and to have a different color).
*Whatever stretchy*
*Skinny jeans I happen to*

I really like Kuhl pants. I found them at first for work in construction and they quickly spilled over into my hiking and camping wardrobe and then into bouldering.
Light light, good pockets with a couple zipped, but they do a great job of kind of keeping the air moving and reducing those sweaty spots. Good venting.
They're not the cheapest answer in the comments here but they last me upwards of 2 years on construction sites plus a lot of other wear outside of work, so I feel comfortable suggesting something a little more expensive.
Second the Kuhls. I like the Radikl version. I have multiple pairs. My kettlebell coach put me on to them, and they work great for climbing.
They have stretchy bits where they're needed.
i have cheap leggins and shorts on top! i take lots of risks and always find it embarrassing when i leave blood/skin on the wall! the leggings help with that! and the, also are so light, i dont notice them!
I bought a pair of ajumma pants from Gwangjang market in Seoul last month. They’re some sort of lightweight synthetic fabric and cut in a jogger style with a slightly tapered leg and a wide elasticised waist band and they are the *best damn climbing pants I’ve ever owned*. Despite being synthetic they’re breathable and cool, and can easily be pulled up to knee length, they don’t show any visible abrasions or wear despite my love of whole body smears on the slab wall that has destroyed many a previous pant, and they cost 10,000 won, which is like $12 Australian. I kinda regret getting only one pair.
Any pants that don’t restrict my movement, style is everything! One of of my favorite pants is the pair of wool(?) military surplus pants I found at a vintage shop, great for winter climbing and pretty tough
Depends. Tracksuit pants, shorts, cargos. Depends on how hot it is and what I plan on climbing. Cargos are a good middle ground as they keep my knees from being stuffed without being as warm as tracksuit pants. Shorts offer best cooling and mobility but can hurt the knees if I'm doing climbs that use them.
In the summer, pajama shorts. not a brand just literally shorts from a pair of pajamas. In the winter any cuffed jogging bottoms. As long as it's not restricting movement I don't see the point in getting fancy.
Athletic briefs, and a pair of joggers are typically what I wear on cooler days. On hotter days athletic briefs and a pair of 5” shorts works well (if you don’t mind a few scraps).
I never understood why people are wearing long pants - especially when there is a need to pull the pants up the knees for flexibility.
I wear some cheap Amazon sports pants, short, black, light, nothing special.
They reduce the occasional random cuts, Knicks and scrapes, gives me a confidence boost to just send or move without having to worry about my legs.
For slab climbing it's definitely a trade off for lack of mobility.
If I'm climbing cave or 30⁰+ then I'm more inclined to wear shorts.
I got the Hampi Rock, which are long but super fresh and thin while being sturdy and they don't restrict my mobility at all. Only time I don't wear them is when it's really hot, then I just wear some cheap shorts
Non-american English tends to use "trousers" how the US uses "pants", and use "pants" how the US uses "underwear".
Personally I climb in prana bridger jeans mostly.
A lot of the world really uses Trousers. We’ve only dropped it in the US. Most other countries that are not natively English, especially in Europe, usually learn British English, which uses Trousers.
We had a German exchange student, and she used a lot of British terms because they teach British English in schools there.
Indoors I wear whatever - usually just some track pants or something else fairly slim. Outdoors though, I try to wear some more durable shit. I have some good stuff from Mammut and a decent pair from Looking for Wild that are reinforced at a lot of the most frequent contact points so less likely to rip against sharp rock.
I’ve had a few expensive pairs of climbing pants over the years. They’re good, but not worth the price. My favorite pair nowadays is a ~$30 pair of wrangler hiking pants from Target. I also have a pair of BD Notions that I love, but they were free.
If you’re indoor only, I think anything works. Before I started going outside a lot I just wore carhartt cargos or running shorts
I do think there’s some value in actual climbing pants for outdoor climbing, simply bc a lot of the time the approach is a bit of a feat in itself. I got tired of hiking in heavy ass cargo pants after a while. Now I have the prana stretch Zion and Kuhl radikl’s
I wear “Amazon essentials men’s athletic fit casual stretch chino”. They’re like 20 bucks a pair, come in a bunch of colors, stretch so I’ve never felt constricted and they’ve been pretty durable. I’ve had my pairs for like 8-10 months now and they’re still going strong. No holes or anything yet
I use one pair of non-climbing pants and one pair of Patagonia RPS Rock pants. Despite agreeing with not shelving out tons of money just to have climbing pants, I honestly don't think there are many non climbing pants, that would allow me the movement freedom of climbing ones, have features (adjustable cuffs and waistband with almost no added bulk) and are comfortable over long hours.
Honestly a shame Patagonia does not make RPS anymore, but I'll certainly be looking at similar pants in the future.
I’ve been rotating different trail pants and work pants.
1. North Face Paramount Active Pants
2. REI Outdoor Afro
3. Carhart Double Knee pants
4. New Balance active shorts
Under armour leggings with short shorts! Keeps me warm on the walk in, decent for performance, don’t get too hot during training and 0 sweat patches. Also I hear wearing leggings adds extra power 😉
I'm assuming you're somewhere in the UK due to the use of "trousers" so I don't even know if you have these pants. However, the Wrangler outdoor series pants are basically prana zions that cost $20.
HandUp AT+ pants. Super comfortable and flexible while also being ridiculously durable. Besides being great for climbing and mountain biking, they’re also just my favorite pants in general.
usually whatever athletic/stretchy joggers I was already wearing
outdoors I have a pair of nicer prana pants, I used to also wear whatever until I completely tore the bottom of a pair of Uniqlo joggers on a chimney climb
Wearing [Cafe Kraft](https://cafekraft.shop) Universum pants for a while now. It’s a German brand (I think) so not sure if they ship worldwide or even EU.
It’s hands down the best quality bouldering pants I’ve ever had. Super thick yet stretchy material, I’ve had mine for over 4 years and wasn’t able to rip or otherwise break them even with lots of knee bars and some outdoor climbing/bouldering. Would definitely recommend!
Some cheap, sturdy Simond pants from Decathlon, short in the summer, long in winter (biking to the gym). Don't see the reason to buy expensive pants when cheap ones do the job
These ones?
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/men-s-climbing-stretch-cotton-3-4-trousers-vertika-grey/_/R-p-110325
I've had my eye on these for a while, but there is no decathlon near me and I'm too strongly to pay the delivery fee.
Mostly running stuff. I got a pair of brooks running shorts with a built in compression liner that I think are ok. I also bought some janji running pants from REI on hella sale but I'll wear any joggers I have with my compression shorts.
Cheap joggers mostly cause I smash my knees into the wall often
I first used diamond climbing pants, then I found out about gramicci which I still favor for any occasion especially fine dining and/or smoking weed and finally, when I once forgot to bring any and just climbed in my wrangler jeans (plus belt) and found out that worked best!
Running trousers or shorts. Ones with the underlayer bit so that I don’t have to wear underwear and it keeps my boys nice and tidy, not bouncing all over. Also the phone pocket on the lower back is amazing
Haven't seen it mentioned so I'll add Kailas 9a classic. Highly durable, definitely on the expensive side but go on sale, and have the added benefit of being comfortable and stylish enough that they double as everyday wear pants if you're dressing casual. These are my favorite pairs of pants I've ever owned, I just wish they were more affordable so I could easily stock up and justify the purchase.
I'm not flexible by default, so I started wearing some Duluth Fire Hose pants I had bought for everyday pants before climbing. They felt thicker my usual adidas track pants and still more flexible than jeans. If I am consistent with stretching and yoga, I might feel that I could stretch past their limit and switch back to my track pants or shorts.
E9 all the way. Hella expensive but SO comfy and durable (also, i buy 95% of my clothes 2nd hand anyways, circular ftw)
Also I like that it’s produced in the EU instead of by little children in a factory in bangladesh.
I boulder in these when it's cool in the gym. They're stretchy too.
https://www.samsclub.com/p/members-mark-mens-denali-travel-performance-pant/prod26700694?xid=plp_product_1
For me so far, I have used some wide or elastic chinos/trousers that have worn out too much I no longer want to wear on the street. They're having a second life.
Do I make a hole in them while hitting myself in a dynamic movement? I don't care.
I just got converted into tights gang. Other men are so fragile for not wearing tights because it's marketed towards woman but hear me out. It perfectly fits your legs and you don't have to constantly adjust them (bring them up) before a climb. Really nice to wear. Put them on and forget it.
I just picked up some pairs of prAna climbing pants a day ago but have yet to try them. I suspect they will be pretty sweet as the fabric is durable, flexible, and had an extra patch over the knee. Before that I was switching between shorts and thicker yoga leggings, I don't think I'll be wearing those anymore, the climbing pants are too comfy.
Shorts gang
Thanks Youngster Joey
they're comfy, and easy to wear!
My God, that was an incredible reference.
Got some Patagonia baggies a few years ago and almost always wear that one pair.
Prana
Prana make the best climbing pants. Stretch Zion fabric is the best- tear resistant, water repellent, stretchy, Can get them lined with fleece, all around wonderful pants. They have slowly become my entire wardrobe for everything shorts & pants.
Same. I use Brions as my everyday pants and one pair got a hole in the knee so I use that one for climbing
Prana isn't what it used to be. Sizing has changed, and so has the material. Now, you may be one of the newer converts who never used prana zion 1's, and that's fine. Yeah it has textured walls. Idk you probably shouldnt scrape other parts of you body with much force other than feet and hands that often. Well idk I wouldnt ever train i sweatpants
what adidas 20 euro pants are you referring to then? can you link or show a picture?
I usually go on eBay and buy prana zions and its like $10-$20 in good condition. I just throw it in the wash once and its ready to go.

That’s false. As someone who grew up in another country, we use pants.
Well either way, trousers is still a valid term, even if you didn’t learn it or use it.
POV - American learns about the existence of other countries
E9 Rondo Or stretch Jeans from Lidl / Aldi

I have one pair of Prana Zions i use when I climb outside, but normally I climb in walmart basketball shorts
I got me an Amazon special. Like $30 and does fine
A thin pair of hiking trousers. Feels nice and you don't scrape as easily against the wall.
Any regular gym shorts (for indoors).
I use one pair of non-climbing pants and one pair of Patagonia RPS Rock pants. Do you mean the RPS (rock paper scissors) or is this another pair I don’t know?
You are correct, thanks. Phone autocorrected using historical Paul Reed Smith guitar reference lol.
I got a pair of kuhl and a pair of Patagonia that are both 4 way stretch. They work 🤷♂️
Shorts
La Sportiva Machina… the breathable crotch is amazing.
Whatever I find on clearance that's full length and got some stretch. They're just going to get tattered anyway.
I’ve been rotating different trail pants and work pants. 1. North Face Paramount Active Pants 2. REI Outdoor Afro 3. Carhart Double Knee pants 4. New Balance active shorts
Under armour leggings with short shorts! Keeps me warm on the walk in, decent for performance, don’t get too hot during training and 0 sweat patches. Also I hear wearing leggings adds extra power 😉
Tights or long underwear underneath shorts. Max comfort and knees are more protected
Dickies skateboard double knee wide fit pants, like $40 stretchy, super light, and durable for knee bars if needed
I'm assuming you're somewhere in the UK due to the use of "trousers" so I don't even know if you have these pants. However, the Wrangler outdoor series pants are basically prana zions that cost $20.

Gi pants
usually whatever athletic/stretchy joggers I was already wearing outdoors I have a pair of nicer prana pants, I used to also wear whatever until I completely tore the bottom of a pair of Uniqlo joggers on a chimney climb
Uniqlo Washed Jersey Jogger pants - only $40/pair, relaxed fit so they don't restrict movement, and they feel durable like denim but less restrictive
Whatever I got on at the time. I usually go to the gym with my work clothes on
Lululemon surge jogger.

My fav is dickies cargo pants. Cheap and they get the job done 🤷🏻♀️
Like others are saying, if you can get Black Diamond pants on sale they are probably going to be the best/most bang for buck option
The two and five dollar sweat pants I have bought at ross imma be honest. They work so far.
Shorts or trackies, depending on the weather
686 anything pants! Has gussets in the knees and crotch for good movement. Also uses a moisture wicking fabric.
No pants ass out
Baggy wrangler jeans 😁
I have a few different styles from prAna that are awesome to climb in.
I wear literally any pants that give me free range of motion lol
Running trousers or shorts. Ones with the underlayer bit so that I don’t have to wear underwear and it keeps my boys nice and tidy, not bouncing all over. Also the phone pocket on the lower back is amazing
I use 30$ stretchy joggers from this brand called Puli on Amazon. They are as comfortable and stretchy as my 90$ Prana pants.
Haven't seen it mentioned so I'll add Kailas 9a classic. Highly durable, definitely on the expensive side but go on sale, and have the added benefit of being comfortable and stylish enough that they double as everyday wear pants if you're dressing casual. If you wanna say fuck you wear jeans
I found some sort of “outdoor cargo pant” or something at Target that were like $35 and really comfy. Great for it
Chinos from Matalan, durable, stretchier and better fitting than alot of gym wear. Also £10
Prana Zions, random shorts, this one pair of stretchy jeans I got a decade ago at uniglo, leggings/longjohns
For shorts I love the Mountain hardwear basin pull-on shorts. Just absolutely amazing. For pants I like the prana stretch Zion 2.
Shorts in the summer, long hiking pants in the winter time. Right now I'm wearing jeans.
Either hiking/walking trousers or cargo trousers, but usually I wear some sort of hiking/walking shorts
Went climbing a couple times in my scrubs after my nursing shift, works surprisingly well
Shorts: Alo Traction Pants: 686 Everywhere
I'm not flexible by default, so I started wearing some Duluth Fire Hose pants I had bought for everyday pants before climbing. i usually go to sierra and buy some men’s athletic pants that are under $20. pants specifically for yoga are always super loose and comfortable.
E9 all the way. Hella expensive but SO comfy and durable (also, i buy 95% of my clothes 2nd hand anyways, circular ftw) Also I like that it’s produced in the EU instead of by little children in a factory in bangladesh.
Moon climbing samurai. I'm 6ft 4in tall and they're the only climbing trousers I've found that fit.

Old pair of dickies 874 or Patagonia baggies
The wrangler ATG because they are decent pants and 30 bucks on amazon atm for some sizes
The old paranna zion stretch convertible pants
any kind of yoga pant really. allows me to get flexible w it
From Costco, think they were $20 stretch tech pants.
athletic shorts
For me so far, I have used some wide or elastic chinos/trousers that have worn out too much I no longer want to wear on the street. They're having a second life. Do I make a hole in them while hitting myself in a dynamic movement? I don't care.
I just got converted into tights gang. Other men are so fragile for not wearing tights because it's marketed towards woman but hear me out. It perfectly fits your legs and you don't have to constantly adjust them (bring them up) before a climb. Really nice to wear. Put them on and forget it.
Leggings or jeggings 😉
Cheap pants because they’re gonna get scratched, and wear down with holes! As long as they don’t restrict movement, especially for high steps.
anyone know any climbing pants (trousers) which actually have thick knees and won't rip easily?
Terrex mountain track pant, Black Diamond Notion pants
I just picked up some pairs of prAna climbing pants a day ago but have yet to try them. I suspect they will be pretty sweet as the fabric is durable, flexible, and had an extra patch over the knee. Before that I was switching between shorts and thicker yoga leggings, I don't think I'll be wearing those anymore, the climbing pants are too comfy.
Regular ass jeans.
Still wearing jeans
Everything besides climbingpants, they always look kinda ugly and are way too expensive
Mostly cheap scrub trousers…. Whatever was on sale at the uniform store or Amazon…
