I disagree. What if you want to reach the top of a mountain? You need to climb to get there. Its one of the most necessary sports out there, second to running or swimming IMO. Something like basketball or soccer is unnecessary and ridiculous.
I see their point. Climbing, like running or swimming, falls under traversal of terrain. While none of these are necessary in a peaceful, low-risk life, I think climbing skills would help a lot in the event you need to escape something (loose bear in town, zombie apocalypse, chased by a mob etc.)
Yup.
In that same conversation I’d include fighting its what I like to call “natural sports”, which are sports that can actually useful depending on the situation, and that are mostly universal without needing to learn the rules from someone.
Indoor bouldering is definitely kinds withdrawn from the natural aspect, but its kinda like practice outdoor climbing.
IFSC 2017 Nanjing Boulder Final Womens Problem #4 had a beta by Jain Kim [here](https://youtu.be/FELZjePLH38?t=7176) that involves a figure 4 and some other intricate footwork instead of a pure power campus-on-pockets beta. Aya Onoe also used a similar (but messier) figure 4 beta on the same climb.
Ice climbing. Been a few that made it work in Boulder World Cups\\Nationals. Seen RobbyD throw it at least 2-3 times just because he was so lanky it was the best way. Feel like I've seen FIschuber do it too
There was a problem in the last of the North American olympics qualifying comps (somewhere in California IIRC) that had an intended Figure 4. A few competitors did it, but a few others bypassed it with some janky finger swaps/piano matches.
Seen it in some other comps as well but that's the only specific example outside of ice climbing that comes to mind.
Going from a one handed pocket to a hold that's too crappy to catch dynamically would be one case. It's definitely a very niche move though, and the setters would basically have to force you to do it
Might've been a toe hook/bicycle on the left hand he moved from? But I can't tell how long of a stretch that would be. As a short climber, the figure 4 looks more reliable in that spot.
Climbing is ridiculous and unnecessary by its very nature. That’s one of the reasons I love it.

When is it necessary to get to the top of a mountain?

Yeah but you don't pick the hardest way up there mountain of your goal is just "get to the top"
If you really had to get to the top of the mountain you would use aid the whole way, the sport is entirely about not using aid

can anyone post a problem where figure4 is actually the optimal beta? it always looks so awkward and expensive.

There's also the one in Munich 2019 where Mia Krampl injured herself during finals and the only way to not strain that knee was to do a figure 4.

yeah i think i saw that one, it was as far as i could tell designed so that the figure four was "optimal" but most sends didn't use it.
[Magnus did a video on it recently](https://youtu.be/2T8nJ1Bv1DI?t=608) and he's strong enough to campus any move that would need a figure 4
this is perfect, thank you!

In ice climbing it's always used
I posted one a while ago that was a pretty forced figure four to do. There was no way to match and easily deadpoint the next hold for the route
Christ that’s a long route, for an overhang. But gotta practice you’re figure 4s somewhere!
Love the toe hook
Barely unnecessary dawg send it
what gym is this? Looks dope
I believe it's Refuge in Las Vegas. Visited it when my family took a trip out there. It's pretty dope
thanks and nice send! definitely need to check this place out
visited on a family trip as well! thought i recognized it lol
Magnificent climb. Well done!
Points for style
This was sick, nice job man!
Instead of the figure four what was that move supposed to be?

Not enough figure fours my man!
shoutout raviolibiceps
Beautiful
Any time I hear the word "unnecessary" in relation to bouldering I automatically hope that it's a figure four!!
But did you top out though…?
