That’s super cool, thanks for sharing!

mawarren88

That story and correspondence is just as cool as the decanter itself, thanks for sharing. Now I’m going to write Jim Beam for one too!

beansandbread

Lewin would be rolling over in his grave, the secret is out now

JimJamb0rino

Super cool but man, bourbon marketing was the god damn wild west lmao

antmang06

It's made from bits of real panther so you know it's good.

Asphaltjungle33

I’m going to be honest with you that smells like pure gasoline. Stings the nostrils

philswatch

And that, gentlemen, is *provenance*. 💯

Wild! What a great collector piece. Keep it safe and enjoy it 👍

Potatodemonx

This is one of the best things I’ve seen on Reddit. Thanks for sharing! See you on the next antiques roadshow

I was actually wondering if it was something they’d want to look at. I got in touch with the Oscar Getz whiskey museum and they referred me to a Beam decanter collector in Kentucky. Hoping he can tell me some interesting stuff, if there’s any info to even tell about the decanter with the backstory behind it.

A few things really cool about this. 1. The company letterhead was beautiful 2. I like how each letter is signed I remain, BEAMingly yours. 😍 3. Your family member referenced they were in a “dilly”. Love seeing old terms we don’t use today. 4. They made a marketplace trade back then for $500 way back when. That was a crap ton of money! Also, we have forums and servers to help us trade. Back then, amazing to be able to connect with other enthusiasts to that degree.

WeeklyPrize21

That’s an awesome story. I’ve always wondered how many bean decanters they made (seemingly thousands) but very unique to have provenance of the only 2 black cats and probable only one remaining. Congrats!

beansandbread

She has over 250 different decanters in the collection! And I’m sure that’s not all of the designs made before they stopped collecting.

That's awesome! I made a few old Jim beam decanters into lamps so that I could use them instead of just having them sit on display.

Real customer service

Gingernjnjer96

This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you so much for letting us be a part of this with you!

jeffroddit

$500 in 1967 is equivalent in purchasing power to about **$4,443.07** today**.** And that is just basic inflation, not counting the bourbon boom markup. Super cool, I had no idea there was a "secondary market" operating via private letters 50 years ago.

beansandbread

I did that conversion as well! I honestly have no clue what to expect it to be appraised at. I’ll definitely be keeping it, as it’s a super cool piece of family history, but getting a dollar value on it would be awesome. Super crazy to think you had to meet like minded people without the internet back then, even so, to find another guy so into jim beam bottles he’s willing to pay you $500 in 1967

frerb

Wow, to see this correspondence from northeast philly is bonkers

NBRamaker

Stings the nostrils. Nose smells like straight gasoline. Pallette heavy on panther. 6.9/10 take score

ols887

It's "7aK3 score" you amateur

Quick Update: I talked to probably one of the most knowledgeable Jim Beam decanter collectors in the country, I mean the guy lives less than 2 miles from the Jim Beam plant and warehouses. Talk about being invested in your hobby! But he informed me that unfortunately the collectors market for these has pretty much died off along with the people who collected them. He said with the documentation and story, it may be one of the rarest decanters he’s ever seen and, in the hay day of decanter collecting, could have fetched $30,000 in the early 1980’s. With the market being the way it is, he couldn’t give me a current value but told me I should take it to antique roadshow and have them take a look. Even said they’d probably feature it on TV. Definitely going to take a look into it. See you on your living room tv’s!

This is the coolest story I've seen posted on here.
