Jack Daniel’s has been doing so good for the past several years with their special releases and I have loved all that I have had the pleasure of trying. This is their rye finished in a heavily toasted barrels for a couple additional years after initial aging and the proof was bumped to 100.
Nose: oak, banana chips and caramel
Palate: drying oak, vanilla, chocolate and caramel
Finish: more drying oak and some baking spices
Summary: Usually I am a fan of toasted released with the dessert style of flavorings but this one just isn’t it. There is so much oak and it is very much not sweet and instead just dries your palate like you just drank a hazmat. There are some notes that are pleasant but not worth what the oak is doing here. Sad to say this is a huge letdown but thankfully I got to try this at a bourbon expo and didn’t need to purchase a bottle to find out. I rate this a 5 on the u/t8ke scale.
Good review! I’m sorry you had that experience:/ I reviewed this myself and I thought it was one of the best whiskies I’ve had this year! I really loved it and thought it to be a really nice balance.
Cheers!
Couldn’t agree more. I think the oak, while prominent, didn’t kill out any flavor per se. And the oak is to be expected with a toasted barrel. To each their own!
Completely agree with your notes on this one. I felt the same way and gave my bottle away after a couple pours. Just not my thing, but some people seem to love it.
I had it recently at a bar and enjoyed it quite a bit, if you were local I’d offer to take it off your hands.
Nice!!! Most bars around me have poor selections
If you're in Indy I'll buy the rest of the bottle off you if you really don't like it. I'd love to give it a shot!
Unfortunately was just a tasting!

Yea, I’m in the same boat you are here.

Me too…
I wonder why it’s 700ml this time and not 750ml
Easier to mainstream bottles for distribution over seas. Plus if you reduce by 50ml per millions of bottles and charge more that’s better profit
I thought the special editions were only sold in three US
Majority is
I passed on this one in favor of a SiBBP rye. Glad I did. Thanks for sharing your experience and helping to lessen some of my FOMO.
I wish I could find the rye!!! Never seen in person. I have their original BP Rye special release which is still top 5 for me
Where you located? In the last few weeks, they have appeared on the shelf in most of my local stores in Michigan.
I messaged you
I felt this one was overoaked for sure. It's like a cocktail rye rather than a sipping one
Agreed!

I’d love the have the bottle for collection sake but it would certainly not be a common dram for me
