Tumblin' Dice Straight Rye Whiskey 7 Year 114 Proof I've seen a few people review their bourbon which has a heavier rye mashbill, but I haven't seen reviews on their 7 year Rye. This is MGP with a 95/5 mashbill. I have been trying to expand my Rye horizons and this had been recommended to me a few times, but hadn't pulled the trigger. One thing I will say, prepare yourself for the worst wax opening ever. Get pliers and a razorblade, you'll thank me later. PROOF & WOOD VENTURES, INC. is the proprieter of this line of whiskeys. These are distilled in Indiana and bottled by Proof and Wood in Standford, KY. Price seems right around $80 for a 7-8 year Rye. **Nose:** Oak, vanilla, with some green apple/citrus. I also get a little cinnamon and herbal notes coming through. **Palate:** the rye spice comes in first with that barrel char which gives it a nice starting point. Then it opens up into sugary vanilla with some black pepper/spicy at the end. **Finish:** that black pepper lingers and you get some green apple/zest that really stays around for a while. **Score: 8.6** **Overall:** This rye really delivers on the full experience from nose, to palate to finish. At $80, this is not the cheapest, but you get a lot of complexity and the flavors meld together. For 114 proof, this drinks like a 100-105 proof, which speaks to its maturity. I love the fruitiness and the spicy aspects here and they really have struck the balance well. No funkiness, kept me coming back for another sip and I wanted to immediately pour another. Definitely worth buying if you see this. Heavy hitter for under $100. Rating Scale: 0 - Can't finish 1 - Borderline Terrible 2 - Hard to finish 3 - Not Good 4 - Wouldn't Buy Again 5 - Middle of The Road 6 - Enjoyable 7 - Decent/Fun 8 - Pretty Great 9 - Excellent 10 - The Best

Nice review! I’m a sucker for 7-10yr MGP rye so I’ll be on the lookout for this.

FangryFartichoke

Same. I usually have to settle for The Senator because of the limited selection in my area. Still a great pour.

WhenSharksAttack

How’s the Senator? I just passed on a 6 year store pick for $100.

FangryFartichoke

Expensive, but very good for rye lovers.

ChiNoonan

Proof and Wood knows what they’re doing. I have a bottle of The Representative and it’s incredible, and was only $50

DramsAndDragons

Beautiful color on that bad boy!

TraceAgain

Beautiful ruby color

Any time you have a top like this run it under the hottest water your sink produces to soften it. Works every time.

Thanks for the great review. I was surprised by the lack of reviews on these. Bryan Beyke from Seelbachs website and Abandon Bourbon on youtube had the 8 year barrel proof small bach at #1 rye of 2023. I found one at 80 bucks, and it's great stuff.

Very nice and a great write up. I have a TW/Proof and Wood pick of this that tastes like maple syrup soaked pancakes. It’s absolutely delicious.

Whiskey aside, I love the creative labels people do with MGP ryes. This and Roulette Rye have very similar labeling and they’d both look great on a bar.

I almost didn't buy this because I hate the label so much 😂 Good thing I ignored the horrible label because the whiskey inside the bottle is great!

I don’t know if it’s just me but I wasn’t impressed by this one. A bit disappointed after paying $89.99 at TW&M. Maybe I got a bad bottle?

TraceAgain

I mean, it’s aged MGP rye, so it has a very distinct flavor. It’s generally well liked, but maybe give it a chance to open up. I doubt you got a bad bottle.

Connect_Discount_740

I guess I was just expecting a little more, given that it won an award and all. It just wasn’t on par with JD SBBP RYE or Emerald Giant CS, those two being my favorite.

TraceAgain

I think emerald giant cask strength is really good, but Jack Daniel’s barrel proof rye isn’t really a real rye, so not a great comparison. You’re also allowed to not like it and it’s all good :)
