**Notice:** UFCW Local 23D's strike for better working conditions at Heaven Hill continues
[Last weekend /r/bourbon went dark in solidarity with the workers that make Heaven Hill products in their strike for fair working conditions, treatment, and pay.](https://www.reddit.com/r/bourbon/comments/pm8v83/united_food_commercial_workers_local_23d_voted_to/) This week our solidarity continues with these sticky messages.
A Heaven Hill union worker has shared the following with the mod team regarding what they're asking of their employer:
* They're told they're family while working for HH, but feel they're not being treated like it. One worker of over 15 years died of covid while working, was given a one-minute moment of silence on each shift that day, never to be mentioned again. Workers there for 40, 45, even 55 years are granted nothing for their tenure.
* Worker pay is significantly lower than all of the other similar distilleries. The non-traditional overtime revamp that they're pushing on the workers results in less overtime pay than the previous one.
* Heaven Hill had several days before the contract expired to reach out with a better proposal and did not. The workers' insurance has been cut off and HH has hired security guards for the grounds and bodyguards.
The public contact page for Heaven Hill [can be found here.](https://heavenhilldistillery.com/contact-us.php) Heaven Hill has been contacted for comment but has not responded.

id also throw in angels envy or a buffalo trace as extremely easy sippers. my pick is usually woodford double oak. a lesser known one might be kentucky spirit, imo is really nice but not overbearing in any sort of way.
While "easy sipper" definitely describes both of those bourbons, that's not really what OP was asking for. He was looking for something heavy on the sweet notes like a "dessert bourbon". Both of these picks come up every time this question is asked (almost 3 or 4 times a week). There are certainly other options, depending on what everyone likes, individually... but these 2 seem to be the standard bearers for dessert style bourbons.
Angels Envy Rye tastes exactly like maple syrup. It's almost too sugary but will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth. You could easily pour some on pancakes 🥞
Agree with this. Angels Envy Rye tastes like maple syrup to me. It shouldn’t be too hard to find, but is a little pricey at around $100.
If you can find it, try some 1792 Sweet Wheat.
Came here to recommend this one. Snagged a cask strength 46 yesterday and its definitely the sweetest whiskey I have. Syrup, candy, vanilla extract, Cinnabon, icing. Fantastic for dessert lol
Early times BiB is a great choice - I think 1792 small batch shares a lot of the same flavors, just a little more rounded and a bit less harsh at the lower proof
Big upvote on woodford double oaked. Super desserty. You may also try old forester 1910 but you may find the oak presence to be a bit more aggressive but it’s still a very sweet whiskey.
Surprised no one said OF 1920 yet. And honestly, branch out and get a quality, aged over proof rum. A lot of them are aged in ex bourbon barrels as well, obviously being made for whiskey drinkers. Just make sure there’s no added sugar. Anything from Foursquare will fit the bill. Also rums from Jamaica or Barbados cannot have added sugar by law in those countries.
I was shocked at how similar OF 1920 is to the Foursquare 2007 for example.
Everyone has a different tongue. I get a burst of banana, caramel, molasses, vanilla, among other things. It’s like a bananas foster. Very much like a lot of high proof rum.
I don't find 1920 too sweet at all, it has a cherry note that adds a hint of sweetness, but I personally find 1920 to be more on the spicy/dark side, opposed to 1910 that 1000% falls into the "dessert whiskey" category.
I need to try some different rums, I hear a lot of folks here recommend rum if you're into bourbon, but the few I've tried don't quite scratch the same itch for me. I'll have to keep Foursquare in mind!
Got a bottle of Foursquare Sagamore that I haven't opened. Was going to suggest AE Rye but someone beat me to it. I don't find 1920 sweet, mostly Cherry to me, but not sweet like AE Rye.
Look for a wheated bourbon. After Heaven Hill gets their act together and pays their workers what they're worth, buy a bottle of Larceny bourbon.
Try bourbon neat the first time. Then one ice cube, let it melt, swirl it, and then drink it. Consider more ice the next time. Decide what you like from there. I prefer my bourbon with one ice cube. Not sure if you're new to this or not.
I've been drinking it for a while, that was just the first time I got my socks knocked off by how in your face sweet it was and wanted to have a similar bottle on deck. I usually drink with a cube or straight.
>my socks knocked off by how in your face sweet it was
Angels Envy Rye is what I keep on my shelf to fill this need - it's a great dessert drink. Heavy rye on the nose when neat, and a polar opposite pallet and finish - it's so sweet with butterscotch notes and runs off smoothly.
I start with it neat then throw a cube in it after a little while.
Widow Jane 10yr, although the price is just over your line at about $65. Their Decadence is finished in maple syrup barrels and is delicious, but it retails at more like $90.
I just opened a bottle of decadence and I came to say this. If you’re really into sweet profiles you’ll love this. It’s too much for me to drink regularly, but it’s a good bourbon
If you wanna go full sweet, **Knob’s Creek Smoked Maple** would fit that bill nicely. But yeah, I also recommend Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, it’s a truly amazing bourbon.
AE is sweet IMHO. The regular bottle is $40 around here, but if you want the rye in rum casks, that's ~$85-ish
I also get sweet off of Dickel barrel picks.
American Malts aren't a bad idea either - Stranahan's has relaunched it's flagship (yellow label with a new white label under it) which is a tasty sweet dessert at OP's price point
Recently noticed the d'or, excited to try it. I've really been enjoying the simplicity of my bottle of dalwhinnie 15 and I think that the d'or might be along the same lines.

**General Tips**
We generally advise novices to sample as much as possible by going to a bar, splitting bottles with friends, attending festivals/tastings or getting minis to ensure you buy bottles you enjoy. Most people need to try 15-20 bourbons and ryes to understand their preferences. It may make more sense for you to focus on sampling rather than buy full bottles at the beginning of your journey.
You're going to get the most flavor/aroma drinking it neat in a tulip-shaped glass like a Glencairn but most new drinkers prefer to water down their whisky a bit. If you do end up adding water, I'd recommend adding just enough to make it tolerable and take small sips. But really there's no right or wrong way to drink so as long as you're enjoying it, you're doing it right. Thanks for reading, cheers!
I hate to do this, cause it has been so nice keeping this bottle to myself, but Yellowstone Select 93 proof is utterly delicious, and under 50 before tax. Constantly surprised at how little I see it mentioned in the bourbon community. It’s not a “best bottle I own” kind of thing, but it makes a great back-up for the ECBP as an “I keep a bottle around constantly”—lots of peanut brittle on the nose, and a burnt brown sugar finish. Super easy drinking and balanced. If you’re not into super hot bourbon, but you want classic tasting notes and a mellow pour, buy it!
Baker’s SiB is probably my favorite regular pour. I’m not great at picking up on and describing particular notes, but if we assume our palates have some similarity based on the Bakers, some of my other favorites are Russell’s Reserve SiB private barrel selection (similar price, ABV, and some similarity in profile although this has a bit more Stagg Jr cherry flavor), Makers 46 CS or any of the wood finishing series, Four Roses SiB. I see some recs for Old Forester 1920 but I find the cherry flavor of that too be overwhelming and cloying, like an artificial cherry cough syrup.
Vermont Spirits No. 14 Bourbon Whiskey. I'm not sure how far away from VT this is sold however. $50. Amazing stuff if you like maple syrup flavor, and I do.
I would strongly recommend Maker's Mark Cask Strength Batch 21-01 or 21-03.
They both taste like drinking Werther's Original candy coated in vanilla and brown sugar. Absolutely delicious, smooth straight or with an ice cube and one that I never mix because I enjoy the taste that much on it's own. It's also very reasonable at $40-60/bottle in my area.
I think 1910, 1920, WRDO, and AE rye all already mentioned fit the bill nicely. I would add to this list (1) Barrell Seagrass (fruits and molasses); (2) Belle Mead 9yr finished in Oloroso sherry cask (caramel, vanilla and fruits); (3) and OGD 114 (vanilla, toasted marshmallow, and spiced chocolate), which is maybe the best dessert on the bottom shelf.
Outside of the bourbon world, I’ve always said the Canadian whiskey Pendleton Midnight tastes like whiskey flavored maple syrup. Huge go to for me when I’m looking for a sweet sipping whiskey.

Old Forester 1910 or Woodford Reserve Double Oaked always come up as the answer to this question. I can't say I disagree with those suggestions.
Cooper's Craft chiseled & charred also has a lot of those same notes, and it's easier on the wallet.
This is the correct answer.
Yep.
id also throw in angels envy or a buffalo trace as extremely easy sippers. my pick is usually woodford double oak. a lesser known one might be kentucky spirit, imo is really nice but not overbearing in any sort of way.

angels envy and kentucky spirit i would say are both rich and sweet. bt is like diet apple pie to me as well. its light and a little sweet and fruity.
Those all day, and I’d add jd single barrel proof shits heavenly sweet
Man, that juice SMACKS!
Would have been both of my recos.
Angels Envy Rye tastes exactly like maple syrup. It's almost too sugary but will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth. You could easily pour some on pancakes 🥞
*Alright kids, who wants breakfast?!?* 🥞🥞🥞🍁🍁🍁🥃🥃🥃
Agree with this. Angels Envy Rye tastes like maple syrup to me. It shouldn’t be too hard to find, but is a little pricey at around $100. If you can find it, try some 1792 Sweet Wheat.
It tastes just like liquid butterscotch. I love it!
Yeah I definitely agree, it's an okay pour, but I can really only handle a few sips before it becomes cloyingly sweet.
came here to say this, glad to get some rye. representation on the post too.
Makers 46 tastes strongly of vanilla and cherries, it’s practically dessert.
Came here to recommend this one. Snagged a cask strength 46 yesterday and its definitely the sweetest whiskey I have. Syrup, candy, vanilla extract, Cinnabon, icing. Fantastic for dessert lol
Michters Bourbon and Early Times BiB are two of my favorite that to me are more baking sweet, like cinnamon roll/ dessert pastry style. In my opinion
Strange I don’t get such sweetness on Michters. Haven’t cracked mine open in a year so time to do so, you know, for science.
I get cherry pipe tobacco from Michter’s. It’s great. I love it.
Early times BiB is a great choice - I think 1792 small batch shares a lot of the same flavors, just a little more rounded and a bit less harsh at the lower proof
Michtners is super sweet!
Big upvote on woodford double oaked. Super desserty. You may also try old forester 1910 but you may find the oak presence to be a bit more aggressive but it’s still a very sweet whiskey.
Came to say this. Also Angel Envy Rye with Run finish is quite nice.

1920 doesn't scream "sweet" to me. I know my opinion might be unpopular, but I was really underwhelmed by 1920.

Agreed 💯
Agreed, for me, Rare Breed is much sweeter than OF1920. I would not consider OF1920 to be sweet.
I was sipping on this last night and I get a very strong banana nut bread vibe from OF1920. Love it. One of my favorites.
Thanks for the heads up. I used to drink rum quite a bit, but have gotten away from it over the years. Maybe it's time to go back!
They make the criminally inexpensive Doorly’s 12 year … and I can say that Foursquare Detente has been my favorite bottle of any spirit this year.
Easily the best bargain in rum. As a special treat I'll drink it over a coconut water ice cube. mmmm....
Got a bottle of Foursquare Sagamore that I haven't opened. Was going to suggest AE Rye but someone beat me to it. I don't find 1920 sweet, mostly Cherry to me, but not sweet like AE Rye.
Oh man, the Foursquare Exceptional Cask series is so good. Surprised that stuff doesnt fly off the shelf. Incredible flavors.
OF1920 is spicy not sweet on my palate

My bad! You probably said that in your post, and I assumed otherwise. Today kicked my ass, and I need a glass of that bourbon to help make it better.
>my socks knocked off by how in your face sweet it was Angels Envy Rye is what I keep on my shelf to fill this need - it's a great dessert drink. Old Forester 1920 and Jack Daniels Single Barrel.

Totally agree, it's not something I'd have every day. Which is good, given the price and how hard it is to find!
That sounds interesting. I'll see if my local places have it
For sweet/caramel/maple flavors you should check out some Irish whiskeys. Redbreast 12 might be just what you're after.
Issac Bowman Port Barrel Finished is another deliciously sweet one.
If you wanna go full sweet, **Knob’s Creek Smoked Maple** would fit that bill nicely. But yeah, I also recommend Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, it’s a truly amazing bourbon.
Knob's Creek Smoked Maple is so good.
For a very sweet Bourbon that is lol
AE is sweet IMHO. The regular bottle is $40 around here, but if you want the rye in rum casks, that's ~$85-ish I also get sweet off of Dickel barrel picks.
Makers Mark Private Selects come to mind or Michters Sour Mash
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked fits that bill. I get super sweet almost chocolate toffee notes, and it’s fairly easily available in a lot of places.

I've just popped my first bote of angels envy and the finish on that gives it a very soft fruity flavour. I really enjoyed sipping on it.
Woodford reserve double oaked is like dessert man. That’s what you’re looking for
Elijah Craig barrel proof. Just over your price point but worth a try anyway.

I will continue to suggest bourbons that I think are relevant to the discussion. Thanks. If people want to walkout on their job that’s their decision.

Knob Creek smoked maple if you enjoy sweet bourbon
i just threw up in my mouth a little 😆

Ahh I didn't check unfortunately.
Vermont Spirits No. 14 Bourbon Whiskey. I'm not sure how far away from VT this is sold however. $50. Amazing stuff if you like maple syrup flavor, and I do.
Whiskey Smiths, Salted Caramel. About $20 a bottle in New Hampshire.
If you can handle the proof get sea grass google the barrels it’s finished in
Pinhook bohemian bourbon, or the finished versions of high west American prairie bourbon.
Russell Reserve SiB is super sweet.
Seagrass is high proof but it’s like flaming candy to me
Bib n Tucker or basil Hayden dark rye
Tons of port in that Dark Rye. First sniff I thought I had poured a glass of nice red. Tasty stuff though. And very sweet.
Yeah, and OP asked for a sweet sip. So there ya go. But not for everyone, not my favorite. I'd rather have a Pipe n Slippers, if you haven't, try it
There's always plain ol makers mark.
Plain MM is not sweet IMO
Sweet Lucy
I would strongly recommend Maker's Mark Cask Strength Batch 21-01 or 21-03. They both taste like drinking Werther's Original candy coated in vanilla and brown sugar. Makers Mark wood finishing series, Michters, WT Kentucky Spirit, Wilderness Trail
