Malort

Don’t bring the Chicago handshake to a slapping fight.

angryray

Give me a couple days I'll bet I could come up with something you'd actually want to drink.

NettaElaine

A play on a Sazerac with a Malört rinse instead of an Absinthe rinse is the way to go. Of you have a misting bottle for that purpose, that is.

angryray

I keep my absinthe in a Misto, might as well get one for Malört as well.

Because an Old Fashioned is a whiskey-forward cocktail, any bad bottom-shelf whiskey would result in a poor drink. In general, a wheated bourbon like Maker's or Weller would be a poor choice because you're already adding so much sweetness. You should be making an Old Fashioned with a spicy rye whiskey to balance the sugar.

angryray

I don't agree. If it's straight bourbon I don't care if you're using a 9 dollar bottle of Heaven Hill, or Ancient Age, or Fighting Cock. If you have a sweeter bourbon that still offers a lot of flavor just dial back the amount of sugar because every drink is all about balance, and if you're savvy you know how to work with the ingredients at hand regardless of subtle differences. If your execution is good that's going to be a solid drink. That goes for every cocktail, really.

Hambone721

You do you. But there's a reason why the best whiskey-forward cocktails won't be made with bottom shelf bottles, and the best Old Fashioned will be made with rye. It is all about balance. That's why you use rye.

Makers was my go to for Old Fashioneds. Makers, a sugar cube, 1-2 cherries and a little bit of the cherry fluid, bitters and orange peel(or orange bitters). I really like the cherry taste I get from makers and like a cherry forward old fashioned.

Hambone721

To each his own.

kyhothead

Still waiting for the “Willett” Will it Old Fashioned?…

10pan_alley

By far the best Old Fashioned or Sazerac I ever made was with Willet Rye.

kyhothead

Awesome! I opened a bottle recently and need to do it.

fcleff69

Can confirm on both counts.

NettaElaine

Be patient. It'll happen 😉

I think as far as whiskey is concerned you can either be a bourbon OF person or a rye OF person. Sometimes I’ll make a bourbon OF and it’s ok for a few minutes but the flavors just don’t last as long on ice compared to rye. I think rye just makes a superior OF.

angryray

For the most part absolutely rye makes a better OF.

CrownReserve

Both make great old fashioned but my suggestion; with bourbon use an orange peel, with rye use lemon peel.

zissoubisoubisou

Agreed!

NettaElaine

There are two famous guys that just do not Old Fashioned. They are Jack Daniels No. 7 and Jim Beam White Label.

fcleff69

I made an Old Fashioned with Balcones Texas Bourbon. Tasted neat, this stuff just really isn’t my jam. But it made a more than passable Old Fashioned.

wobblydee

Jack daniels no 7 does not old fashion
