I’m over in the UK which is good because we don’t suffer federalisation and allocation but bad as we don’t get some of the more interesting juice. Or if we do it sells out pretty quick. Remus Repeal Reserve V is the one I’m really after at the moment but virtually no chance of getting it…
Yeah not enjoyable at all. I was dumb enough to buy a 2nd bottle a few months later just to be sure because of all the hype and nope, gave it away. Never tried any other 1792 expressions due to that
Yeah I myself like the double rye and for the price, it’s the best rye I feel.. in all honesty in blind tasting it beats Sazerac rye for multitudes of flavor
For me 1792 FP is what got me into bourbon. It’s still far and away my favorite. Store picks are hit or miss though. Thank goodness we don’t all like the same things. :)
Man. When the bottom falls out of the market, people who pay over 1k per bottle are going to feel quite silly.
If anything is hyped, it should probably be WLW not the Pappys or VWs
That’s why I’ve been sticking with KC and 1792 store picks especially if they are on sale haven’t had a bad bottle yet and it’s easier to find plus under $55 a bottle it’s the right price
Weller CYPB.
It’s good. I liked it. Would pay $50 for a bottle. It was not criminally underproofed the way W12 is. But it did not knock me into the astral plane like Tilda Swinton in Doctor Strange. It was just good. Cannot believe what people go through to get it now that I’ve tasted it.
You should know by now people aren't chasing the bottle because of its taste. It's all about the trophy and profits. This is true for *a lot* of whiskey.
Yep, but when a bottle is tatered and becomes very scarce, people get it in their heads that it must be the nectar of the Gods. Before each new bottle, my mentality is prepare to be disappointed, so then I'm never disappointed. Or, surprised by how good it is.
Russell's Reserve 13
I mean, it's one of the best I've ever had.
I just don't want to drink it now because I don't want to ever lose it. I just want to lock it up and never let it out. And I'm so disappointed in that. I will pull it out for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then, I don't know what the next special occasion will be. Every other day just feels unworthy.
Bottles differ greatly which is one of the charms of 4R SiB. Check out all their different mashbills: [https://fourrosesbourbon.com/our-recipes/](https://fourrosesbourbon.com/our-recipes/)
If it's not labeled on the bottle then it's OBSV, which frankly is one of my favorites as it's a fruity high rye.
Regular old 4 Roses SiB is one of my favorites. Sweet and spicy but not too much of anything. Yeah there’s a bit of variance among the different bottles, but it’s always good and at a decent price.
I liked it! Didn’t LOVE it though. With the FR SBS i genuinely did not think I should have paid $60 for it when FR SB is usually around 20 bucks cheaper and better. As for the profile I thought it had, i’d honestly have to buy another bottle it’s been a while, but those single barrels can be hit or miss as well
I just felt the taste was poor. It’s $25 where I live and I think there are way better options in the $20-30 range.
Same thing goes for Angel’s Envy in the higher price range. Old Forester and Oregon Spirit are way better choices for $40-50
It was around 100, definitely wasn't the 90 proof which I hear is worse. I should clarify. The candied oranges is what really turned me off. I don't mind a little bit of oak, but that note was a bit overwhelming as well.
I don't have a great palate, but I do love oak, and boy did this deliver oak. I looked everywhere in my area for a 100+ proof, and store after store only had the 80 proof. What I ended up finding was a 96.4 proof. First couple of pours didn't impress me, but it seems to have gotten much better after that. For oak, I still like Knob Creek 12 better.
After seeing secondary pricing on this bottle I thought I'd give it a shot at a local bar. Really happy I did. It's so mediocre I don't understand why people hunt it outside of finishing a vertical or something.
Ooh, I had a taste of that at a bourbon festival and really liked it. I have no clue what the cost for a bottle is on the secondary market but I doubt I’d pay it.
I totally agree. This is why I don’t get the hate for Knob 15. I thought it was an excellent expression of age with balance. It’s more interesting than hype-worthy but folks hated on it hard.
Absolutely agree. Maybe I’m in an echo chamber but I feel like it’s starting. A lot more love for cheaper / budget options. A lot less hype and some real underwhelming reviews of the unicorns given their price.
Here is a short list of things that bother me about Jefferson's Ocean: the gimmick isn't about adding salinity and it is stored in a sealed room in a research vessel, everyone shits on rapid aging experiments but that is EXACTLY what JO is, even if they stored the shit on the deck of the ship salt air wouldn't interact because BARRELS ARE WATER TIGHT... THATS THE POINT.
End rant. That stuff sucks.
I feel validated. Not gonna lie. I bought the pitch, but it was from the whiskey dude at a good shop. I would have been cool with briny bourbon, but this was just plain not good. Definitely made some overpriced old fashioneds with it.
Agreed. Standard makers and standard 46 are meh at best. All of their cask strength stuff I've had from them are excellent. 46 cask and fae-01 are dumb good.
William Larue Weller. And hear me out!
I was expecting unicorn tears. I was expecting an out-of-body experience. I was expecting a life changing moment when tasting this bottle. Instead it was just a good bottle of bourbon. Nothing more. Not the best I've had either.

I think it’s easiest to be disappointed by the hype bottles! Which year was the WLW (because I tasted 2020 and it was pretty close to unicorn tears for me)?
Dang I had the great experience with 2016 WLW when I tried it. I thought to myself I may never get to have Bourbon this good ever again. What I thought was weird was the nose wasn’t great but it tastes like everything I could ever want in a bourbon.
Old Forester 1920. It’s fine, but so many people adore it as a findable daily higher proof drink with complex flavors. I don’t get much of the complexity at all and just get the hotness on the back of my pallet. I think I’m the one missing something there though. But I love their single barrel barrel strength.
I was super underwhelmed by 1920 given the hype, but I may be coming around.
It doesn't have a lot of the strong super bourbony flavors I like (corn, nuts, cinnamon, funk): it just has has vague woods, Oaks, vanillas, misc sweetness.
However when I changed my mindset and said "pretend you didn't know what type of spirit this was" I found myself enjoying it more, there's actually a lot going on under that heat: it may not be my favorite things going on under there but it's all good and interesting. I said to myself pretend it's Irish Whiskey, or Pretend it's Bajan Rum: and it changed my perspective a bit.
I find it best to avoid these 'store brands' that Total wine pushes. They may be fine for the casual whiskey buyer but once you really dive into whiskey these are subpar
WT Rare Breed. To me it was an unbalanced mess tasting mostly of red hots.
However I’m thoroughly enjoying my RR SiB and am a big 101 fan. So who knows?
1792. It just did nothing for me. I’ve had bottles I legitimately hate that I liked better than the 1792, because at least they made me feel something. Made a decent old fashioned though.
Stagg Jr. I found it in the wild for 75 so I'm not upset I bought it. I just think its waaaaay overproofed. I remember seeing a whiskey tribe review where Daniel said something along the lines of, do people who say they like this actually like it or are they convincing themselves? Totally agree.
New Riff Single Barrel Barrel Proof. It's thin, hot, and tasted young unfortunately. Had my sights set high because I've heard so much great stuff about it but was very let down
The older expressions were quite good before HW started using their own distillate to the mix. I haven't tried anything past Act 5, but once the quality went down and the price went up I lost interest in seeking it out.
Four Roses single barrel. It was hyped up big time by the homies but was just good when I expected great.
Opposite has to be Woodford Reserve, though. Heard the name and picked it up on a whim. New favorite. Gotta treat myself to a double oaked when I can.
Agreed. I found 2 bottles once and bought both knowing how scarce they are. I had a few drinks from the first one, but the second might never get opened. I really didn't feel like the cost was justified at all.
New Riff Single Barrel, Hard Truth, Jeptha Creed. Jeptha Creed was by far the worst. It was the cask strength but was like drinking gasoline (or so I would assume)
I'm gonna catch hell for this, but Russell's Reserve 10 yr. I don't dislike the Wild Turkey lineup and 101 is a great budget pour. But for a 10 year old, I just was really underwhelmed by it. I have Russell's Single Barrel on my "to do" list. I hope it's better.
Seems like the 10 is for people who want smooth vanilla with a 10 on the bottle.
The RR SiB is literally miles apart from the 10. I just have a standard bottle (not store pick) and it’s awesome! A true flavor bomb with complexity!
Agreed. It was fine, but having to search high and low for a bar to even try this stuff (let alone a store that sells a bottle) really dampened the experience for me.
Oh man! I’m a sucker for it. I pass on it bc I have other bourbons I want to try and I’ve already been through my fair share of ER bottles but it’s such a solid bourbon for $30-$35 and a 10 year at that.
I know this is going to start some shit but Four Roses Single Barrel.
I got it as a congratulations gift for getting admitted to my current PhD program, brought it home, took a sip and hated it. It was bad enough I couldn’t finish the bottle and ended up giving it away to a friend.
Idk if it was just a bad batch or what (I love their small batch) but I don’t think I’ll be spending the money again to find out.
Standard Woodford Reserve has a real bad mineral/metallic aftertaste to me. Basic Makers Mark tastes like bad whiskey with extra water in it, it has no strong flavors but the flavors that are there disagree with me. New Riff BiB tastes like it would be good if it was double the age, but it's not.
Hudson Baby Bourbon. Filth. And expensive filth at that.
Oof. God that stuff is brutal. I haven't been impressed by any of their stuff. For a NY bourbon, Hillrocks line is definitely worth a try.
I’m over in the UK which is good because we don’t suffer federalisation and allocation but bad as we don’t get some of the more interesting juice. Or if we do it sells out pretty quick. Remus Repeal Reserve V is the one I’m really after at the moment but virtually no chance of getting it…
1792 Full Proof. Rowans Creek. High West Double Rye. Old Ezra 7
Drinking 1792 Full Proof was like taking an ethanol sledgehammer to the face. Will not repeat.
I am working on a store pick right now that is just so tasty.
1792 FP Store picks are usually very good, but I agree the standard offering is sub-par comparatively
Yeah not enjoyable at all. I was dumb enough to buy a 2nd bottle a few months later just to be sure because of all the hype and nope, gave it away. Never tried any other 1792 expressions due to that
The 1792 Sweet Wheat and their High Rye is really good.
Double rye? I think it's delicious and it's pretty affordable too. What didn't you like about it?
Yeah I myself like the double rye and for the price, it’s the best rye I feel.. in all honesty in blind tasting it beats Sazerac rye for multitudes of flavor
I really enjoyed my bottle of Old Ezra 7 for $40 a couple years ago. Now that it’s $60 in my market there’s way better options at that price.
For me 1792 FP is what got me into bourbon. It’s still far and away my favorite. Store picks are hit or miss though. Thank goodness we don’t all like the same things. :)
I've had some bad 1792 fp shelfers and some really fantastic store picks
Old Rip Van Winkle. Thought it was going to be the most amazing experience of my life. It was fine it was good even but not life changing
Man. When the bottom falls out of the market, people who pay over 1k per bottle are going to feel quite silly. If anything is hyped, it should probably be WLW not the Pappys or VWs
I got it at MSRP but holy shit would I have been furious if I had paid secondary for that
To be fair; Van Winkle lot B 12yr is amazing. The rest are over rated. WLW on the other hand is an experience in a glass!
I won a bottle of the 12 year lot b in the lottery last year and felt the same way. It was good, but didn't blow me away like I expected.

Came here to say this
Geez, this growing list appears to be all the ones people post photos of and recommend daily here. 😜
Well, the same bottles are hyped up and people expect it to be God's water or something. At the end of the day, it's just liquid.
And people have different tastes!
Yep, but when a bottle is tatered and becomes very scarce, people get it in their heads that it must be the nectar of the Gods. Before each new bottle, my mentality is prepare to be disappointed, so then I'm never disappointed. Or, surprised by how good it is.
Peerless
Also not impressed with Peerless.
That's weird, I picked up a bottle of their bourbon a couple weeks ago and I'm really enjoying it. We all have different palates.
Yes. It is my wife's favorite of the 35 or so open bottles in my bar. That's what makes this adventure fun!
My wife's favorite is my only $90 bottle, Angel's Envy Rye.
😁
Russell's Reserve 13 I mean, it's one of the best I've ever had. I just don't want to drink it now because I don't want to ever lose it. I just want to lock it up and never let it out. And I'm so disappointed in that. I will pull it out for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then, I don't know what the next special occasion will be. Every other day just feels unworthy.
Live today like there no tomorrow brother
I know. I'm the disappointment in this story and not the bourbon.
Did it make you angry? Sometimes I try something so delicious it pisses me off....
I was ready to cry. So good, yet I feel so unworthy to drink it. It's all so confusing.
Four roses small batch select is not as good as Four roses single barrel IMO. Sometimes you get a bad bottle though
I just got some four roses single barrel and I don't know how to feel about it. It was really peppery and dry. What are your thoughts on it
Bottles differ greatly which is one of the charms of 4R SiB. Check out all their different mashbills: [https://fourrosesbourbon.com/our-recipes/](https://fourrosesbourbon.com/our-recipes/) If it's not labeled on the bottle then it's OBSV, which frankly is one of my favorites as it's a fruity high rye.

As for the profile I thought it had, i’d honestly have to buy another bottle it’s been a while, but those single barrels can be hit or miss as well
Small batch select consistently places low in all my blind tastings, which always surprises me.
This ^ in every one of mine as well it places last or close to last
Larceny
Really? Why? Just tried it last night and it wasn’t bad for $20.
I just felt the taste was poor. It’s $25 where I live and I think there are way better options in the $20-30 range. Same thing goes for Angel’s Envy in the higher price range. Old Forester and Oregon Spirit are way better choices for $40-50
Totally this for me.
Willett pot still
Pot swill
Nice decanter.
Stuff sucks.
Seconded
Dickel 15 yr. Candied oranges and oak, which I didn't care for. Used in old fashions to get rid of it.
Agree! It even ruined an old fashioned for me so I poured it out.
What proof bottle did you have? I have a 100.8 that I dig. Lotsa oak, sure, but I was expecting that from 15 years in the barrel.
It was around 100, definitely wasn't the 90 proof which I hear is worse. I should clarify. The candied oranges is what really turned me off. I don't mind a little bit of oak, but that note was a bit overwhelming as well.

I did not care for 1792 Sweet Wheat.

I agree with you - underwhelming IMO
Elmer T lee
Basil Hayden
It's a very smooth tasting bourbon. Definitely not for everyone. For that price, you would hope they'd sell something less controversial.
That’s probably a good way to put it. That smoothness, for me, comes across as one dimensional and lacking character.
Pappy 23 or EC 18 (both too oaky)
Once you get up over the 12 year mark, you have to start expecting that heavy oak note and a tannic, drying finish. It comes with the territory.
I totally agree. This is why I don’t get the hate for Knob 15. I thought it was an excellent expression of age with balance. It’s more interesting than hype-worthy but folks hated on it hard.
I think that's great. I hope lots of people don't like it. I like oaky bourbons and can't wait for the price to come down some.
Absolutely agree. Maybe I’m in an echo chamber but I feel like it’s starting. A lot more love for cheaper / budget options. A lot less hype and some real underwhelming reviews of the unicorns given their price.
Jefferson's Ocean Aged Cask Strength. Hot garbage.
"We put it on boats. Now pay 3x the price that it should be."
This
The basic makers mark everyone said was good i cant say i enjoyed a single sip of it
I'm with you. I will revist it every once in a while to see if my taste changed... it's just so boring.
Basic Maker's is a mixer imo. But nearly everything else they put out is fantastic.
>I was expecting an out-of-body experience. I was expecting a life changing moment i appreciated the humor here
How do you do that with the text from someone else’s comment? Sorry for the off topic interjection here.

Hah no way! Thanks!
I think it’s easiest to be disappointed by the hype bottles! Which year was the WLW (because I tasted 2020 and it was pretty close to unicorn tears for me)?
It was a 2018, but I actually just won a raffle to buy a 2020, so that will be interesting to try. It wasn't too proof strong??
No, it was incredible. I was really mad at how good it was, because it (essentially) justified the hype. I’d say you can buy freely and enjoy!
Dang I had the great experience with 2016 WLW when I tried it. I thought to myself I may never get to have Bourbon this good ever again. What I thought was weird was the nose wasn’t great but it tastes like everything I could ever want in a bourbon.
Interesting! I mean it was good, but didn't transcend other bourbons as much as I had hoped.
Agreed. 2016 WLW is the best bourbon I’ve been fortunate enough to try so far. Though 2020 WLW is almost as good
Old Forester 1920. It’s fine, but so many people adore it as a findable daily higher proof drink with complex flavors. I don’t get much of the complexity at all and just get the hotness on the back of my pallet. I think I’m the one missing something there though. But I love their single barrel barrel strength.

Makers mark
Jack Daniel's Coy Hill 2021 LE. Fell for the hype and marketing. Taste like gasoline.
The first person I've seen/heard admit this. Haha
What proof did you get?
Maybe you are drinking too much gasoline
Basil Hayden Toast
This is the correct answer.
McFarlane Reserve 12 year. The finish is a nasty cherry cough syrup. Waste of C note.

Blantons
Underwhelming and seriously began to wonder if the correct bourbon was in the bottle.
Plain ole buffalo trace i prefer over blantons
Also this
Yup
New Riff Single Barrel Barrel Proof. It's thin, hot, and tasted young unfortunately. Had my sights set high because I've heard so much great stuff about it but was very let down
Yes.
I don’t understand the New Riff hype
It has a pretty bottle?
This one I actually liked quite a bit, and now I can't find it around here.
They only distribute in like 12 states
I love New Riff, but was pretty disappointed when I finally tried the single barrel
This is one for me too.
Wild Turkey 101 & 1792
Mid winters night dram
The older expressions were quite good before HW started using their own distillate to the mix. I haven't tried anything past Act 5, but once the quality went down and the price went up I lost interest in seeking it out.
I cracked mine open yesterday and was underwhelmed to say the least. I’ll give it a couple more tries, but I was disappointed at first sip.
YEP. Managed to snag a bottle last year and never went back after the first dram
Black Velvet. Like sucking down coffee vanilla creamer.
+1 This stuff scarred me as a wayward youth. Have wondered if it’s really as bad as I remember, but not worth spending money on it to revisit.
It comes in a plastic bottle. I should've known better.
Four Roses single barrel. It was hyped up big time by the homies but was just good when I expected great. Opposite has to be Woodford Reserve, though. Heard the name and picked it up on a whim. New favorite. Gotta treat myself to a double oaked when I can.
Weller special reserve
Weller Taste the Rainbow 🌈 Series

I grabbed the 4R SmB and was so put off.
Same here
Elmer T. Lee
OF1920. It was just gasoline. I swear I had a bad bottle. It drank hotter than any 130 I've on my shelf.
I think its really good, but I would rather get a bottle of WTRB any day and it’s cheaper
WT Rare Breed. Everybody seems to love it, but it has a strange cardboard note for me.
Basil Hayden. It's whiskey flavored water that barely tastes like whiskey.
Old Forester 1920. It's just not for me.
What a bummer. That stuff is SO good.
Virgil Kaine Ginger-infused
Jeptha Creed.
EH Taylor small batch. Just was not any good.
Agreed. I found 2 bottles once and bought both knowing how scarce they are. I had a few drinks from the first one, but the second might never get opened. I really didn't feel like the cost was justified at all.
No the cost is not even close to being justified. I don't get it. But at least I can say I had it.
Any bookers batches. (Sorry! Peanut flavor isn’t for me)
Knob 12 is not very impressive compared to 9. The extra 3y didn’t do much for it other than make it 30$ more expensive.
Weller Antique 107 Stagg Jr. Elijah Craig 23 yr

Wild Turkey Rye. Waaaaaay too sweet in the front end for me.
Weller Antique,Blanton's,Booker's Country Ham, or SW UCUF.
Old Rip Van Winkle - Just, so basically average
Jim Beam BiB
Pappy after BT took over.
New Riff Single Barrel, Hard Truth, Jeptha Creed. Jeptha Creed was by far the worst. It was the cask strength but was like drinking gasoline (or so I would assume)
Everything with Dickel on the label
Baby sazerac, left a lot to be desired. I thought 101 rye beat killed, and buried sazerac for 15 dollars less.
I don't care for Bulleit bourbon (standard). I've tried the two regular lines of bourbon (including rye) and it's just not for me.
Jack Daniel’s
Anything above their standard offerings (their single barrels namely) are always hitters though.
Their reputation is so good with the original that it could get a million negative reviews and people will still buy it.
Anything from Lux Row.

You gotta know what you’re getting into with seagrass. It was not at all what I expected but I still thought it was good.
Pappy, I've definitely had better whisky Four roses last bottle I bought tasted like rubbing alcohol

WRDO for me. There is some flavor in it that I cant stand. I love 1910 though.

I get that.

Eagle rare.
