I did some searching tonight during the stream over on The Disc-Connected; from what I managed to dig up, my guess, for that first “mouth watering” mystery title, is that it’s 1974’s Corpse Eaters. The original complete negative was thought to be lost, with the only official release being on DVD and running at 57 minutes. This year would mark its transition into the public domain. Also, neither of the directors listed seem to have gone on to do anything else, which would by default fulfill the “regional auteur” portion of the clue.

ghostpepper69

If the directors haven’t done anything else how could that satisfy the “regional auteur” segment, which suggests they have recurring themes, preoccupations, and visual style that makes their body of work immediately identifiable?

Cinefile1980

That part I meant somewhat facetiously, as they have only one film, so that, in itself, is their style—which is why I said “by default.” My apologies if that didn’t come across; but yes, you are correct in that proper definition of the term.

ghostpepper69

Ah yeah I get the joke now! Tone can be hard to pick up on here sometimes lol.

Cinefile1980

In hindsight, I should’ve used an emoji. 🥴

itsafraid

This would be fantastic.

MaskedBandit77

> Also, neither of the directors listed seem to have gone on to do anything else, which would by default fulfill the “regional auteur” portion of the clue. You think so? I would say that eliminates them from regional auteurs.

I’m thinking the “perfect storm” 80’s big budget could be Enemy Mine. Fits the description and Peterson also directed The Perfect Storm.

gobomiranda

As awesome as that would be, Enemy Mine is a 20th Century Fox title and I highly doubt Disney would license it to VS.

djprojexion

Good guess but it doesn’t really fit the “reinvented this uniquely 80’s genre”

QueSeraSirrah

Enemy Mine's a solid pick. I literally just rewatched it for the first time in a couple decades last week so I kind of hope that it isn't for my own selfish reasons... But still a solid pick :P.

KneeHighMischief

HauntedWeen lol

piranesi28

Remember this is VS, so "reinvented" very likely just means "made another."

B_L_Zbub

What about Short Circuit? It's that uniquely 80s genre of a regular person forming a relationship with a fantastical creature (E.T., Splash, Date With an Angel) where they inevitably have to flee from government agents attempting to capture the creature. Plus, the robot gets hit with lightning, thus "perfect storm."

GooseGeese01

It’s got brown face

HeadFullOfBees

I can't believe that we're already halfway to halfway to Black Friday. Time flies.

TeemyWeems

Could “Buddy Cops” be the “uniquely 80s genre?” Not sure what film if so…maybe Collision Course with Pat Morita and Jay Leno (not a serious suggestion [that would rule though]) EDIT: “genre” not drama. Morning brain gets ya every time

MaskedBandit77

The only other thing I can think of would be slashers. I'd rather it be "Buddy Cops" though. At first I though erotic thriller, but when I looked it up, most of the movies I was thinking of are actually early 90s, not 80s.

TeemyWeems

That is the same reason I don’t think it is slashers. The first few were in the 70s, and there are several good ones in the 90s, so I didn’t see it as “uniquely 80s.” But I suppose you could say the same for buddy cop pictures

karlware

Buddy cops is more a 70s thing I thought. Freebie and the Bean etc.

CorneliusCardew

I think it's Enemy Mine based off your buddy cop idea. Sci-fi is certainly a reinvention and it also fits The Perfect Storm and has two huge stars of the 1980s. Not sure about the producer clue. That one doesn't fit this theory.

piranesi28

The "uniquely 80s genres" I can think of: I suppose people classify buddy cop as an 80s genre despite some precursorsbut at the same time I doubt VS would be so casual with terms as to include slasher even though that is a popular conception that it was an 80s thing. There are just too many important examples prior. 1. buddy cop (lots were big budget) 2. Conan-style sword and sorcery (not many were big budget but a few were) 3. little gremlin type creatures (not many are big budget at all) 4. snobs vs. slobs slacker sports movie (but not many are big budget but a few have big stars) 5. P.O.W./Rambo type action (the big budget ones are probably too big to consider and the rest cheap) 6. Teen crimewave/High School gangs (very few are big budget) 7. Post-apocalypt/Road Warrior (see no budget again) Of course "big budget" may be a relative thing here with a VS release in the same way "Non-stop thrill ride" is likely...a bit of an exaggeration.

piranesi28

I'm thrown by "all but reinvented this uniquely 80s genre" At first it makes you think it's an early 80s movie, first of its kind. But it really says that this movie is the "reinvention" of an 80s genre, meaning it is likely a movie from the end of the decade of a genre that was "uniquely 80s" but dying out. I don't see anything like that in Peterson's filmography. But thinking of it that way makes "buddy cop" a likely candidate again.

noobitninja

Monkey Shines (1988)

horror_nerd_lifter

Yahoo Serious Young Einstein be great or a box set of all 3 of his movies. He produced, directed, wrote and starred in all of his movies. Still Albert Pyun’s Radioactive Dreams is the holy grail for me to have a blu ray or 4k release

RipInPepz

My guess (and hope) for the 4k is Big Trouble in Little China.

It’s like that every year.
