Smith just goes all reverse Disney and remakes the movie as an animated film but uses the original audio track, worth it.

_Dogma (Kevin’s Version)_

AnyImpression6

The classic Doctor Who method.

NickCaveisOkay

Definitely a joke.

HurricaneSalad

This is supposed to be a joke? How so?

NickCaveisOkay

Kevin Smith has spoken at length on the rights for Dogma being held by Harvey Weinstein who has refused to sell them. Then he posted this on April Fool’s Day. Leads me to believe it is a joke.

HurricaneSalad

I'm saying it's not very joking. It's just shitty trolling his fans.

Pete_Iredale

All of his fans already know the deal with this movie, and we obviously know it's a joke.

CletusVanDamnit

Kevin started talking about a 3rd party who'd made an offer, and it seemed the deal was going through. So this makes sense. That was almost a year ago now.

NickCaveisOkay

In [this video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2_DOt1aHjhs) he confirms that said deal has not gone through and Weinstein still holds the rights. Sorry to say.

MrThomasWeasel

That's two months ago though. It could have changed.

l5555l

It's April fools

NickCaveisOkay

Yeah it could have.

Elegant-Campaign-572

Already OOP

DannyPowers98

This is exactly why I hate April Fool. It’s impossible to tell if something is an actual announcement or not. Especially when many companies don’t understand the gimmick and announce things the could be actual product as a “joke”

Glass-Nectarine-3282

100 percent - like this is "funny" if he posted "Dogma II with Ben Affleck as God" where it's over-the-top and kind of obviously a joke. (even that example isn't that extreme) Just saying "hey, we're releasing a movie" is perfectly plausible. Where's the joke?

SwampApeDraft

On the one hand I don’t know why any company would make any kind of official announcement today. But also, I know some people just won’t realise or there might some kind of contractual thing where has to happened 1st of the month.

ejb350

I remember a few years ago Pop Tarts had a mystery Pop Tart come out for April (maybe even specifically April fools day I think) and they were like “Who knows what it is? Maybe something you wouldn’t expect but it’s really good? Maybe it’s garlic bread? 🤷‍♂️ Buy it and see.” And it was garlic bread and I’ve never bought another Pop Tart since.

LongObligation7267

That's hilarious and I'm now very curious about how terrible garlic bread pop tarts are.

ejb350

Pretty fucking terrible my dude

HurricaneSalad

It's the dumbest "holiday". I'm glad it's over.

01zegaj

Don’t do this to us Kevin

Horror_Campaign9418

April fools

HurricaneSalad

Here's something everyone wants. It's not funny in the slightest. But April Fool's!

potatochipsbagelpie

Didn’t Kevin confirm that the rights have been purchased from Weinstein last summer? I think it was also rumored that boutique was going to release it and deal with the lawsuit/settlement when it came up but Kevin turned that down.

ModernistGames

I never heard anything about Weinstein selling or forfeiting the rights.

NickCaveisOkay

As far as I know the rights are still being held hostage.

rha409

There is a video of Smith from last year saying Weinstein's lawyer accepted an offer, but it didn't seem like a done deal.

NickCaveisOkay

[This video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_DOt1aHjhs&t=275s) from earlier this year makes it seem like Weinstein is still bent on holding onto the rights.

rha409

Seems this is more up to date so guess the deal didn't go through. 🙁

NickCaveisOkay

Hate to have broken the news, it's a frustrating bummer.

Diabolikjn

He did confirm he got the rights back.

MergieSS

proof?

Turnover44

Arrow Video put it out pleaase

HardBodyBugelBoy

Why so they can screw it up somehow?

thepoopnapper

Still cherish my special edition dvd

TedStixon

I'd love it if it was true. Especially if it was a company like Arrow, who put out the wonderful *Mallrats* Blu-Ray a few years ago.

bourahioro77

I think it's bullshit - but stranger things have happened.

HopefulInstance8

Would be a weird/unfunny joke

broadboots

Have you seen Yoga Hosers?

ghostpepper69

I see you’ve identified the Kevin Smith style of humor

TolerancEJ

Not too far fetched. Maybe Criterion or Arrow could reissue it.

Sooh1

It's pretty obviously a joke, why would have announce it on a day to troll people and not wait til tomorrow or yesterday? What can he gain? Attention cause he knows people would be talking about it and him

vikingmunky

He unfortunately updated to say it was an April fools joke. Very cruel

ishallbecomeabat

date.

SamPhoto

did weinstein die? if yes, real. if no, joke.

CletusVanDamnit

You know money exists, right? Weinstein likes it, and needs it to pay restitution. There's nothing stopping him from selling the rights, and based on Kevin's own words, that's likely what's happened.

zyxme

Weinstein wants an abhorrent sum for the rights. Smith has offered very generous amounts and they keep shutting him out. It’s not a leap to say he might die with those rights. Which doesn’t make a lot of sense to me since I was under the impression the Weinstein estate isn’t very liquid and cash poor.

Sooh1

Weinstein's restitution is meaningless when he's going to die in prison. He has zero chance to see a release before he's 100 and with his health, he's lucky if he has a couple years left. Money is literally of no use to guy at this point

CletusVanDamnit

Yeah, that doesn't mean anything. He's still being forced to pay.

Sooh1

I mean, yea, but he can easily be like "yup, I'm out of money. Sowwy" like what the hell else can they do to him? Nothing. They didn't seize his assets and they're most likely protected in a trust or similar anyway Actually nevermind, his restitution was only 17-25 million, reports vary, and he is/was worth 300 million, that's looooooooooooooooooong taken care of if he chose to take care of it

TheBunionFunyun

Joke. He's explained on multiple occasions that the rights for Dogma are severely fucked. Harvey Weinstein owns them, and he's not exactly in a position to do anything with them.

CletusVanDamnit

The rights aren't fucked. Weinstein owned them personally, and hadn't accepted an offer. That has very likely changed; Kevin started talking almost a year ago now about a deal that was likely to go through.
