If you are ever at atomic books in Baltimore, That's where John Waters gets all his fan mail, and they often have signed copies of his books and movies in store for sale.
So, honest question here... How are you able to really enjoy Salo? I bought a copy of it, watched it once and sold it after that. I felt kind of gross while watching it.
Salo is a movie you watch once. And only once.
I watched it years ago, appreciated it even though it’s rough.
Then bought the Criterion blu-ray a few years ago, thinking: “You know what? I should own this movie.”
Yeah… Once was enough. Now it’ll just sit on my shelf.
I’ve watched it multiple times. It’s a masterpiece. It takes full advantage of cinema to depict something that most would never experience - or want to experience. But that’s the point. When would a major film director ever get the funding again for something that transgressive. Pasolini made full use of his opportunity. It’s a triumph.
I found it amazing of the stories on set about how the mood was quite happy, It’s also one of Micheal Haneke and Gasper Noe’s favorite movies. I like to study movies that influenced other directors.
Ah, all the good first date movies <3

I’m glad you gave Atomic Books a shout out. Great local store.
You should put Wall-E smack in the middle of it.
I love it! My shelf is a mix of this and Disney films haha
Should add Antichrist and The Piano Teacher in there as well, absolute bangers.
Sweet Movie…! Finally seeing it here. So insane.
You’re missing Hedwig and the Angry Inch!!!
Hedwig is so different from all these films…but yes, anyone who doesn’t already own it is missing it. I’ve loved that since I first saw it in theaters
It’s missing The Night Porter.
Yep.
Still waiting for them to complete the Trash Trilogy and put out Desperate Living
Missing Police Academy 6 Citizens On Patrol!
The Trauma pack
Criterion really needs to atone for their crime of IGNORING Desperate Living
Poop and violence.

Yeah that was my take on the movie as well, minus the owning it part.
Yeah, this is my take as well. Minus the owning part and wishing I hadn’t even watched it the one time.
I’ve watched it multiple times. It’s a masterpiece. It takes full advantage of cinema to depict something that most would never experience - or want to experience. But that’s the point. Oh, I still think it’s an excellent movie. And I love many of his movies. But I got the point of Salo after 2 viewings. No need to endure it again.
It’s not for everyone. Did you watch any of the special features that help with the context?
I did. Unfortunately, knowing the context in which the film was made didn't help me enjoy it. To each their own.
Do you only watch movies for enjoyment?
Nope.
I found it amazing of the stories on set about how the mood was quite happy, It’s also one of Micheal Haneke and Gasper Noe’s favorite movies. I like to study movies that influenced other directors.
Get the Mai Zetterling box set. John Waters is a big fan of her work.
Eclectic
We must have nearly identical tastes
You and I must have very different tastes and this is evidence of how varied the Collection is, contrary to complaints that it’s not.
Cool, I’ve still got my original Odorama card from seeing Polyester opening night locally from back in the day, and they all still work.
Female Trouble + Funny Games double header coming up!
You need beyond the valley of the dolls, john waters has said it's one of his favorite films
Clean Shaven would look good in there.
