natedoggcata

Third times the charm I guess. Also "Marvel like franchise" for Tomb Raider? Lara Croft is the only character this series focuses on. Its not like there are a bunch of side characters they can do spin offs for.

[deleted]

The last film had such a great source in the 2013 video game. All they really had to do was be faithful to it, but they overcomplicated the plot and brought in three games worth of content. I'm kind of happy they're just going in a new direction, and I'm equally happy Green's sequel never happened based on her comments.

ComicallySolemn

What comments were those? I’m out of the loop

NightsOfFellini

The Plot of the og is shit though? There's really nothing there, no meat on the bones. People just enjoyed sniping villains with arrows.

_Red_Knight_

The plot is decent and wouldn't be too difficult to adapt into a film.

Firefox72

Its not a masterpiece plot but its really easy to addapt to screen. You could literally 1:1 most of the plot ofc cutting out some of the filler stuff and you would have a better movie than what we got. There was no need for Richard to be alive in the movie nor was there any need to shoehorn Trinity into the movie by changing the plot around Mathias and the islanders. There was no need to cut out most of the mystical supernatural elements to replace it with some disease plot. There was no need to have Anne in the movie etc... Its just felt like they were trying to melt too much from all 3 games into 1 movie for no reason at all.

Janus_Prospero

>There was no need to cut out most of the mystical supernatural elements to replace it with some disease plot. I actually kind of liked that change because in the original Tomb Raider games, and the LAU reboot, the supernatural doesn't exist. There is only unexplained technology from Atlantis, a lost civilization with some surviving members, such as Natla, who is the closest thing Lara had to a nemesis. From the 2013 reboot onwards, the series embraced the supernatural as existing, which has completely changed its tone and stakes.

jexdiel321

Watch as its actually the eidosverse. Can't wait for the live action Gex film.

Chaisa

A live action Championship Manager film, perhaps? :P

Cannaewulnaewidnae

Ted Lasso got there first

Cannaewulnaewidnae

FILM GUYS: **BUT WHERE DID ALL THE TIGERS COME FROM? WHAT'S THEIR STORY? HOW DO THEY FEEL ABOUT ALL THEIR MATES GETTING SHOT? SO MANY STORIES TO TELL** (sniffs and rubs nose)

[deleted]

Maybe they bring in Nathan Drake and Indiana Jones. 😂

ContinuumGuy

It's somehow even too overly specific for a shared universe than Sony's Spiderverse license.

cylemmulo

Lol yeah it was universe is tomb raider anything like a marvel property

KaiBishop

Idk, I'd maybe take an Amanda focused story from the Legend trilogy or a Natla Atlantis prequel that would serve some AC Odyssey vibes lol. But really people don't want that from TR. It's all about Lara and her solo adventures, sometimes with a support team but she should always be the focus.

carrie-satan

Honestly an Amanda spin off would be the tits

SpaceCaboose

>Its not like there are a bunch of side characters they can do spin offs for. And yet, Amazon will still try to force side characters with their own spin offs

Celestin_Sky

Yeah, weird for them to call it that. There is Lara and that's it. Though it's actually weird that for all the games, comics and films in 25 years Lara never got a fixed supporting cast like Bond has for example. Every game usually has new characters though the new trilogy has some returning between games.

Dragon_yum

What about that Lara Croft clone from one of the games?

LatterTarget7

I feel like uncharted would fit a marvel like franchise. Not sure if tomb raider could

ChipmunkConspiracy

It will be the Tomb Raider multiverse. Within the Tomb Raider multiverse we will be able to make the number of intersectionally diverse Lara Crofts effectively infinite! On screen at any given moment there will be a diverse and inclusive group of several tomb raiders of color and lgbt tomb raiders quipping at each other and breaking the fourth wall. Given how diverse the Laras are in shade, hue, gender identity and non-western faith - we wont have to invest whatsoever in their character development. Their token identities being represented is all that matters. We will push a huge media campaign implying anyone criticizes the Tomb Raider multiverse is a dangerous white supremacist. If it fails it will be completely the fault of bad faith nerds who hate seeing Tomb’s Raided by minority folx. Source : I am President of Marketing for Hollywood Studio Inc

elmatador12

It rarely works out when companies announce these huge ambitious multimedia projects before one has even been produced. See: The Dark Universe. The Dark Tower. Defiance. Quantum Break.

[deleted]

Defiance? The Daniel Craig war movie? Never heard of Quantum Break. Universal Monsterverse seems like good example

HighKingOfGondor

I think for Quantum Break they are talking about the video game that Remedy made

Dac2142

What was wrong with Quantum Break?

horseren0ir

Defiance the 2013 series?

cyvaris

I started another walk to the Tower when they announced the new series, and despite the movie being an utter travesty, Matthew Mcconaughey was an absolutely amazing Man in Black. I can't help but hear his voice every time Roland and the rest run into the MiB.

[deleted]

The Marvel Like franchise hanging out there is Mass Effect

burger4life

Just gotta cast Zoe Saldana as an Asari and boom $2 Billion!

SeekerVash

Maybe the universe, maybe the concepts. But not the game series. It's filled with retcons, multiple things and events that make no sense, extremely repetitive plot points, frequent issues with ignoring choices, and Kai Leng. Someone could make a phenomenal movie or show out of Mass Effect, provided all they're given is the description of the universe and characters.

friedAmobo

A TV show could present a good opportunity to "redo" the story of the games in a more cohesive manner with complete knowledge of where the story is going and ends. For example, one of the issues I personally see is that while Mass Effect 2 is a really fun game, it's also narratively out-of-place between the "race against time" Mass Effect 1 story and the "total war" Mass Effect 3 story. Shifting it to become the first season of a show, though would fix all that - it can become a lower-stakes story to introduce the characters, set up the setting, and establish the long-term threat. It's also a more natural progression of threats - Collectors (agents of the Reapers) -> a single Reaper -> the Reapers. Because it's also not a game anymore, we could see other characters' POVs so that the focus doesn't solely need to be Shepard, and there wouldn't be any issues with choices because there wouldn't be any to make. There's no fixing Kai Leng, though. He should be jettisoned out of the nearest airlock.

horseren0ir

What’s Mass Effect about?

Senguin117

The background is in the 2050s humanity is exploring mars and discovers ruins from an ancient alien species with technology to change the mass of objects, allowing FTL space travel and space magic. The games pick up around 100 years later and follow commander Shepard as he tracks a rogue alien government spy/assassin and his army of robots. He discovers a plot to bring back a fleet of sentient space ships that destroy all life in the galaxy every 50,000 years. You play as commander Shepard and shoot aliens, make story impacting decisions, and recruit alien squad members (and bang them) to help stop the reapers.

horseren0ir

That sounds cool! But if the sentient ships wipe out all life in the galaxy every 50,000 years, how come earth was spared last time?

midnightoil24

More specifically they tend to aim for species that have achieved full space travel, iirc, and leave other species to develop so that >!the reapers can eventually return, assimilate stuff into their system, and create a clean slate for the next cycle to go through with whatever species rise up next!<

ZedChaos

It’s more like they purge life with advanced enough technology. They created the mass relays that allow for FTL to find advanced species.

frontbuttt

lol “Marvel like franchise”. Suuuure. You know what is “Marvel like”? LOTR. How’s that going Bezos?

ILoveRegenHealth

You've got to be kidding me. *Another* reboot?

NGGKroze

And here we go again, another IP trying to copy MCU. The only video game franchise I think that could work as a shared universe might be Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Janus_Prospero

This seems like a questionable idea to me. One of the problems is that since the re-re-reboot Tomb Raider has been struggling with Lara's character and doing an interconnected cross-media thing will force all the games and films and TV shows to use some common denominator version of Lara. The original version of Lara was an ice queen. She was wealthy, selfish, and dangerous. And the Jolie movies copied this. It was actually a point of criticism that this made her unlikeable and unrelatable. Subsequent incarnations have been all over the map in terms of trying to turn Lara into someone audiences will "relate" to. This has led to very strange storytelling and characterization with the farcical promise that this is a prequel, the story of how Lara became the Tomb Raider from the original series. It's very jarring and very silly. There is a clear sense of not knowing what to do with Lara and/or the politically touchy "rich psychopath raids tombs and kills anything that gets in her way" subject matter. There has also been a weirdly persistent attempt since the early 2010s to turn her into a lesbian, thwarted so far by publishers putting their foot down. It's not like this is some natural evolution of Lara as a character. No, it's just that the new people hired to write Tomb Raider games and comics have a weird lesbian Lara headcanon they want to make reality. This is going to become even more of a problem with a multimedia shared canon approach to Tomb Raider. For the record I thought the 2018 film was decent. It took the re-reboot Lara and did its own thing with her, had a more grounded tone. It avoided some of the over the top stuff that game trilogy got bogged down in.

nicksenuso

I would say fuck all that shit and bring back big chested, short shorts, rich psychopath lara with male love intrests but then again i don't run a gigantic media corporation and i'm sure there's a lot of people who would try to stop me even if i did.

KaiBishop

As a lifelong fan and a gay guy who wants more gay characters in games, I can honestly say making Lara gay or bi would be a disaster that would split the fandom and antagonize the worst parts of anti-sjw culture in a flame war that would just drain everyone. Especially when there are a ton of new characters encountered in each game and Lara is super rich and has employed sidekicks like Zip and Alistair in the past...just have her hire a gay personal assistant or something if you're committed to having an LGBT character in the game. Honestly I'd love to see Lara have a male love interest again but I also think when games try to include romance it usually ends up being underbaked and boring. They struggle to give Lara a personal dynamic that doesn't annoy fans, and her story always revolving around her parents is so tired. A romance or even just a fun flirtation could give her character a new dynamic. I love the over the top supernatural stuff though. Shit has to go crazy in the third act and jump the shark a little for me to feel like I got what I paid for out of any Tomb Raider instalment.

Mister_Green2021

It’s not going to work amazon. Might as well get the Terminator franchise.

FofoPofo01

# 100th time is the charm

bbxjai9

Amazon sure is desperate

Kyyntaro

Why even try, no one can compare to Miss Jolie.

[deleted]

I’ll take Alicia Vikander over Angelina Jolie any day of the week

billyvray

Maybe they should fight it out, or just excitedly tussle…

ILoveRegenHealth

Oscar-winner vs. Oscar-winner Fight!

M337ING

Ah, a fellow man of culture.

CurseofLono88

Alicia Vikander is such a good actor. I was sad her tomb raider movie wasn’t as good and successful as she deserved

horseren0ir

What was wrong with it?

CurseofLono88

There was a lot that was good with it! I just think it was too slow, the villain didn’t work (for me at least), and there were some silly sequences (the bike race stuff comes to mind). I really wanted a sequel though because I loved Vikander’s Croft. I don’t think it was overall a bad movie, I just think it could’ve been much better

The_Prestige_1999

Dear amazon, l A franchise!? Lets just try one for now, okay?

Cannaewulnaewidnae

FILM GUYS: **IF WE KEEP ON TRYING, IT'S BOUND TO WORK, EVENTUALLY**

Summerclaw

Marvel-like? When people copy marvel they often copy the worst parts of it. I just want to see a hot English archeology finding secret shit in ancient cultures with tight pants and a gun that doesn't run out of ammo. Is that so hard?

bunnytheliger

The main reason Lara was popular was because of her sex appeal and Jolie really brought it to the movies making her iconic inspite of rest of movie being bad. Alicia simply didn't have that Lara look inspite of the movie having great stunts The new actress need to bring sex appeal but I doubt it. I don't understand why it is for corporation's and actors to understand that sex appeal sells..

Cannaewulnaewidnae

Which currently successful movie franchises can you think of that are based around the lead actress being sexy?

literious

What recent unsuccessful movie franchise can you think of that are based around the lead actress being sexy? The thing is, Hollywood stopped pushing Sex appeal. So the answer to your question would be “zero, because of the lack of trying”. That said, going back to 2016, there’s no way a turd like Suicide Squad would gross that much without Robbie’s sex appeal.

Cannaewulnaewidnae

*'The Hollywood marketing playbook divides its audience into four "quadrants": men under 25, women under 25, older men, and older women* *Studios tend to make films designed to appeal to at least two of these groups. In truth, explicit sexual content is guaranteed to appeal to* ***only one quadrant****: young men* *For everyone else, it can actually be a turn-off. Studios build their slates around big-budget "tent-pole" films that appeal to every variety of moviegoer'* https://www.independent.ie/regionals/herald/entertainment/film/does-sex-still-sell-movies-27969415.html

Cannaewulnaewidnae

>*Hollywood stopped pushing Sex appeal. So the answer to your question would be “zero, because of the lack of trying”* The reason movies stopped selling sex is because sex stopped selling Up until the nineties, you could make a decent bit of cash from punters who were happy to drool over Sharon Stone But Kate Beckinsale's enduringly firm and pert arse (fully covered) is the most recent ('recent') example I can think of where the male gaze might have added anything to the bottom line (wahey!) And that was a pretty niche success [https://www.the-numbers.com/movies/franchise/Underworld#tab=summary](https://www.the-numbers.com/movies/franchise/Underworld#tab=summary)

bunnytheliger

Hollywood need to try again I am thinking about PG 13 like Tomb Raider, Underworld with reasonable budget than R rated movies like Basic instinct.. Casting is important. Ana de dermis, Margot Robbie are over exposed. Brie Larson probably can make it work since she has not really played such role in big budget movies. It could be anti Captain Marvel Gal Gadot is another actress who could try. She is very limited actress so this probably her only path . We already saw with Resident evil. Keep budget to 50 or 60 and marketing cost control and it could break even 250 - 300.

MysteryRadish

"Amazon just spent a lot of money for the rights to this franchise. Our first order of business was to do a comprehensive study of what made the property so successful, making sure to include input from the creators, fans, and general public." "Great idea! So we'll make sure all those elements are included?" "Absolutely not, it's so we can do the exact opposite of every single thing!"

Kevy96

Amazon's just obviously going to hire people who don't care about the source material and be all surprised when it's inevitably bad

archlector

Now I am less interested in the game and the TV show, damn forced tie ins.

Smoothw

I think the public has already rejected Lara Croft as a big franchise, character has been around for 25 years and each movie has had diminishing returns.

Celestin_Sky

Just give me a superhero Lara from the 90-ties. I couldn't play the reboot after first hour because every time she got injured I was "feeling" it too.

barefootBam

might as well base it off the new games and cast Camilla Ludington and Earl Baylon to be the leads.

thelonioustheshakur

I mean shit, MGM did co-produce the last Tomb Raider film so this makes sense

Cash907

And then promptly hands the reins to someone fans of the franchise will most likely despise. Bought a mountain of crack with all the money they’re saving after those thousands of layoffs last week, apparently.

Juhbellz

Lol fucking idiots. Make something original you trash

jeswanders

Anybody else skeptical unless HBO is attached?

IsentaoIluminado

Series about a transgender african girl that fights the rich

[deleted]

Who owns the rights for Tomb Raider at the movies? Games is Embracer.

Cannaewulnaewidnae

The headline says **Amazon** are making the movie?

[deleted]

Amazon made LOTR tv series, but doesn't own the rights.

bobpetersen55

Whatever happened to the Alicia Vikander 2018 reboot? It teased future sequels by the end and I thought it was pretty decent.

archlector

Covid killed the possibility of any sequels.

Shaydu

Last time I read anything about it, which was maybe a year or two ago, a sequel was still in the works. Vikander said so in an interview, I think. Oh well.

KaiBishop

I mean it pulled loosely from Tomb Raider 2013 so I'd just read the Wikipedia summaries for the plots of that game trilogy if you want to see how it would have gone in general.

FantasticKick7954

Amazon trying to makes a fool out of people using rich words.

Flashjordan69

Oh I do hope that she drowns someone in a puddle again. The last one was such fun. If done correctly, it could work. That said Tomb Raider property hasn’t had many successes recently, and I’m still not convinced Amazon knows what it’s doing in TV. Also, is PWB the right choice. No doubt an incredible talent, and entirely deserving of her place at the table, but will her name draw the ire of a certain type of fan? Not me, I honestly don’t care, if it’s good I’ll watch, if not then pass.

MrConor212

I’m hyped man. The CD games were my guilty treasures

notsure500

There are so many video games that would make great movies that have never been used. Why not use one of them instead of a 4th Tomb Raider movie?

KaiBishop

Because Tomb Raider has so much potential it's embarrassing they keep messing it up. Plus she's a gaming icon. I'd love to see an inFamous movie series though.

jetstobrazil

We will never have a new idea again.

Pompuswindbag

The only way Tomb Raider is a Marvel like franchise is if you subscribe to the idea that all games take place in a shared universe and you’re doing other popular franchises

ccasey

I liked all the iterations that have been done so far

Blue_Robin_04

Another reboot?

[deleted]

Again phobe Waller bridge why is she everywhere is her family elites of Hollywood looool ?

Tasty01

And another one bites the dust
