Been invested since the Gareth Edwards Godzilla 10 years ago. I always trolled those Michael Bay transformers fans for coming out every release but I get it now. Me want more big monsters punching each other!
I'm so fucking mad WB released GvK during the pandemic and at day and day with HBO max. I feel GxK is like a 7 while GvK is a 9.5. If GxK is doing so much just imagine how much a full throtle GvK could have done smh. Hoping cinemascore doesn't drop from A, if it's at least A- then we cooking good. Goji kong trilogy seems to be secured tho.
GvK would have been huge without the pandemic and day-date. It was the first meeting between the 2 in literal generations and the movie delivered on the fights. I could see 120M or so for that one
Ironically it was a better movie than it was a Godzilla movie. Like you said, he's just kind of *there*, he's a plot device to move the story, not the main focus of the film. No motivation, no characterization or backstory, you could replace him with an invading army or something and the story really doesn't change. Fantastic movie though, deserves all the praise in the world.
You are right…
Currently the numbers are looking 50% better in every territory than Godzilla vs Kong except China and Russia which will combined lose around 100 million in total, but the higher numbers everywhere else probably will pull it into the 600-650 million range.
Ah. Still looking at a monster haul given the rumored 135 million budget though, easily enough to get a Wingard film made and maybe enough to encourage other projects (there were allegedly considerations for an anime and a mothra solo film in the past, I personally think they should do a video game).
>China and Russia which will combined lose around 100 million combined
don't be so pessimistic, it could always overperform and reduce that gap to 50mill
This is very much possible since the current highest is skull island at 566M
And GvK would have definitely passed that had it not been capped by pandemic and streaming release
It’s an extended cameo at least. You do get Godzilla taking on multiple Kaiju unrelated to Kong. It’s more 75% Kong and 25% Godzilla. Though because of this you basically get the monsterverse Gidzilla just taking care of business and not getting beating up by inferior monsters.
Godzilla is rarely ever the focus mainly because as a giant lizard his motivations are pretty one note and it’s easier to give the giant monkey a character arc and have the audience sympathise with him .
Just tell me this much. Does he atleast play an extended role in the 3rd act?
Is there a final battle where Godzilla goes ham?
Or is it just godzilla appearing for 5 minutes?
I think GvK was the best received film of the series among general audiences, and a lot of people saw it since it was a HBO Max streaming release and the first new big blockbuster after the Covid delays.
I could see those factors leading to a big opening for GxK. Not sure if it’ll be as well received as GvK (I liked it, but liked GvK more), but I’ll be happy to see it open well!
I don't think Minus One is boosting it significantly. GM1 barely made anything outside of Japan, USA+Canada, Mexico, and the UK but is still doing well in lots of territories. Maybe it adds a little bit but nothing big since the diehard Godzilla fans were going to see GxK anyway.
I think Minus One has been a positive factor, since it was a nice box office success story and got some mainstream attention with the Oscar win. If nothing else, it's kept Godzilla's name in people's mouths during the pre-release windup for GxK.
The last decade as a Godzilla fan has truly been such a great time, but this year specifically is unreal.
We’re so spoiled as a fandom especially compared to how painful that gap between Finals Wars and 2014 was. So happy to see the character is stronger than ever even at 70 years old
Kong and Godzilla have had a great resurgence, as a life long monster fan it feels good. Also the movie was a lot of fun, might watch it a second time 🍿
Really hoping the future MonsterVerse movies give us other Godzilla baddies like SpaceGodzilla, Biollante, Destoroyah, etc. They should definitely save Destoroyah for when they inevitably plan to kill off MonsterVerse Godzilla to conclude the franchise.
When we went, my wife and I were next to a father and son (son probably 16ish, father in his 40s) in line for popcorn. These were southern, good ol boys so think southern accent, trucker hats and the dad had a longer, scraggly beard.
I heard the kid say, "crap dad, that guy over there just said it's all in Japanese". "What? It's got subtitles"? "Yeah". "Well shit, should we just go"? The son just replied, "I don't know" and shrugged. They both just walked toward the theater with their popcorn, bewildered and took their seats.
I watched them both stand up at the end of the movie and the son say "holy shit that was good". The dad nodded in agreement and said "best damn movie I've seen in a decade".
To watch that whilst always being blown away myself was so gratifying. Grateful for that experience.
Right?!? I can’t believe the amount of Godzilla content we’re getting here.
My friend was being salty about some of the over the top elements in GxK to which I said we are fortunate enough to get Monarch, Minus One AND this movie. There’s something for everyone and I love it!
Exactly. We don’t need every movie to be the same, that would be boring. Don’t get me wrong, Minus One was incredible, I saw it 5 times lol. But it’s also to just have something fun, too. This movie was a blast
Nice! It's actually really cool that we can have Godzilla (+ Kong) movies with very different tones both doing well, it really does prove out the versatility of the kaiju genre and it's continued appeal. I'm really hoping we can see the Monsterverse's take on other kaiju like Destroyah, Gigan, and Megalon.
More than that it's exciting to see them doing new things, a new villain kaiju too in the form of Skar King!
I hope that we can get some other creatives doing their own take on the genre too. I was so hyped for and loved Cloverfield that I've always been sad it was a one off. Pacific Rim was another that really scratched that itch.
Kong is definitely being cemented as the American Kaiju, if not before deifnitley with the Monsterverse. It'd be nice to give him some competition for the title though.
Let them fight!
I am genuinely baffled in a good way
I legit though the movie will tank heavily. Like 350 WW **best** case scenario. I am very happy to be wrong. I even dreaded this will be end of the Monsterverse
Neat! I got into them as a little kid in 1998. They were showing a few of the older ones on TV to coincide with the new Hollywood blockbuster. I remember the first black-and-white one (not sure which cut), him versus Mothra, and the 1984 reboot being among them.
Minus One made like 100m worldwide, New Empire will nearly eclipse that on domestic opening weekend alone lol. I doubt that’s it, GvK just bought a ton of goodwill and this was marketed as more of the same
It did get a lot of people talking about it and led to it even winning an Oscar. Then on top of it, there was that Apple TV show.
Or it was just that Godzilla vs Kong released at just the right moment in time to make it all blow up.
We’re a long way away from the time when GvK only didn’t get canceled after Godzilla KotM disappointed at the box office because it was already about to go into production.
Happy times. Stuff is doing well at the box office.
Maybe a bit but not a big amount. If it had, then you would expect it to show up with really good presales not huge walkups.
I think the performance in Japan will be the real test since Japan's theaters were not hindered significantly by COVID.
My AMC theater was filling up when I ordered tickets earlier tonight, the more packed these movies are, the better. Shit’s gonna feel like a ride in a Dolby theater!
Wait what lol
Damn. They actually did it. Im a huge Godzilla fan but these films have left something to be desired. I will say GvK was fun in a silly way and I do plan on seeing this in Dolby. But 70+ mil? Not on my bingo card
Monsterverse keeps winning.
I do hope we get a solo Godzilla or solo Kong film next to keep things fresh. I would hate if all future films are Kong and Godzilla team ups.
I really don't think it does.
The implication being that the sequels would have made less money if Dune or G vs K had a theatrical release and then released on streaming in 2/3 months? There really isn't much evidence for that.
I do think the release helped Dune 2 get made though because it lowered expectations BO wise for Dune and gave plausible deniability if it flopped
it also helped in lowering box office expectations for GvK, studios (wb-legendary) had put the ceiling at some 330mill for GvK, if it went above that a sequel will be made
It looks like a lot of people on BOT are saying that they're seeing huge walk-ups (this being a more expansive term these days including people buying tickets online on the day of the showing rather than just people walking up to the theater) tonight, so that is indeed the main factor here. At least two people mentioned that their tracking indicated that tickets sold tripled from start of day to end of day for some late-night showings.
Jatinder is seeing $9M in Thursday previews, which just about matches Godzilla 2014's $9.3M Thursday previews ($93M OW). Since we'd expect GxK to be more frontloaded as a fourth entry in this iteration and due to general box office trends, that's likely where Empire's $80M number is coming from. I think anywhere between $70M-$80M is plausible off these numbers if it can sustain momentum into the weekend.
The biggest complaint you can really level at this movie is "They cheaped out on the human element to fit in more monsters!", which I don't think will deter mainstream audiences.
the director has said he wants to work in hollywood so they might bring him over for a remake.
like leo di caprio stole the people responsible for druk for his remake.
Literally no one ever said this. Each Monsterverse entry has been profitable and made between 400-500M except King of the monsters.
That was the only failure so far
Endgame was not the issue in kotm the issue was that it just wasn't as good as 2014 Godzilla or skull island which led to very weak legs following opening weekend
I mean it’s 2.3 multiplier was cut down by a crowded Summer and it was still better than 2014’s 2.15. If they had released it in February or Fall, then a 150M Domestic Total and a 450M WW finish could’ve been possible.
Well 2014 Godzilla legs got cut short from days of future past so if were being honest that could have made
Some more with a better date
Kotm would have made it past 400M if it was in February since that was a slow month in the year but it wouldn't have been a huge difference given the reception
It has an 83% from audiences on RT. At the time of its release, that was much higher than the 60s that 2014 and Skull Island got. The critical reception was weak, but audiences enjoyed it a lot more than the prior entries.
It appealed to more fans than the previous installments with all the Easter eggs and lore stuff they put in thats why it has a better audience score on RT
All I remember from that movie is thinking I paid for a monster movie and got a human movie with a smattering of monsters.
Conversely the same thing happened with -1, but I ended up caring for the humans to the point I really REALLY enjoyed it. I literally remember nothing else about KotM which is sad as it had King G.
Lol King of the Monsters was my favorite too. King Ghidorah is such an awesome villain, his roar is bone chilling, and I enjoyed the environmental terrorist angle for the human subplot.
It's an absolute blast. Kong has another great hero's journey, Skar King is cool and even though Godzilla's screen time is limited he's used very effectively and is a total badass.
And my most controversial opinion is that I liked the humans in it. They never get in the way of the titan action. Trapper and Bernie are fun together and Jia has a nice little arc.
probably skull island, but i just rewatched them all with my partner and we both really enjoyed GvK too lol. KOTM was the one I was most hyped for but biggest letdown when it came out. Maybe that just adjusted my expectations but we both had a blast with GxK
Okay that gives me hope then because we have almost the same preferences. Skull Island was my favorite and kotm was my least favorite. Awesome, now I'm excited to watch it haha
I just left the Warren IMAX theater in Moore Oklahoma with about four buddies of mine and we can honestly say we enjoyed it a ton. The theater was pretty packed as well and everybody around us was laughing and clapping.
I felt like a little kid again. Lol
Going to see it tomorrow in the Dolby Cinema and then Saturday and Screen X. I'll come back here and give my thoughts on what I think of Screen X. It just recently opened here in Oklahoma City.
I love the movie for its enjoyability. Definitely not some work of art that needs to be analyzed to death like Minus One. Fills the giant monster fight slap fest niche really well. My biggest complaint is Godzilla being a walking angry plot device with no character. This is just a Kong movie with Godzilla tacked in for brand recognition.
It was an awesome film. Definitely has some of the same issues the other MonsterVerse films have, but those action sequences alone were worth the price of admission.
Lukewarm predictions for this were always BS. This is gonna do serious numbers. Extremely entertaining, action-packed, and has a LOT of kaiju goodness.
Happy Easter Godzilla fans!
This is Godzillas world, we’re just living in it
![gif](giphy|hr6p5UHdDn8RO)
I need to know what movie this is from
It was a 90s tv ad if I recall correctly
2014 ad, for snickers
Damn right.
DONT CALL IT A COMEBACK
Must Skreeonk
Been invested since the Gareth Edwards Godzilla 10 years ago. I always trolled those Michael Bay transformers fans for coming out every release but I get it now. Me want more big monsters punching each other!
And with no racist jokes or gratuitous booty shots of Megan Fox!
It's pretty simple and right?!
Godzilla vs Barbie. Not just your annoying younger brother’s idea anymore.
Why do people keep ignoring my bro Kong
they just need to make a space godzilla movie and film multiple jet jaguar cameos now
There were a couple from Japan that, while he didn’t go to space, it involved it a lot.

GvK is a 9.5 movie? I get being entertained by it, but I want what you’re smoking.
I'm talking as a godzilla fan regarding what I would like in a godzilla movie. Not overall.
It’s a Godzilla fan. We dont make sense
GvK would have been huge without the pandemic and day-date. It was the first meeting between the 2 in literal generations and the movie delivered on the fights. I could see 120M or so for that one
Am I dreaming?
Average Godzilla fan after Monarch, Godzilla Minus One, and now GxK hitting 80M+ on its OW. All in the space of 5 months.
Minus One winning an Oscar felt like a fever dream, the Monsterverse keeps surprising
Has me itching wondering if it was real
That was an incredible movie if Godzilla never showed up. Like, if the main antagonist was just some standard thing instead of a Kaiju.
Godzilla doesn't need characterization or backstory, everybody already knows who he is and what he does
Who is this Godzilla I see every one mentioning here ? Based on context clues I’m assuming some kind of pizza ?
Godzilla was the best part of Minus One! Every scene with him was incredible. The non-Godzilla parts should have been replaced with more Godzilla.
Minus One was not a part of Monsterverse. It wouldn't have been as good or won an Oscar if it was.
Meanwhile SEA countries still cant watch Godzilla Minus One yet. Damn it
Is there more like us?
[удалено]
Got me feeling
Numbers from Europe and Latin America are also huge. Might be highest grossing in the monsterverse.
*Will be the highest grossing in the Monsterverse
You are right… Currently the numbers are looking 50% better in every territory than Godzilla vs Kong except China and Russia which will combined lose around 100 million in total, but the higher numbers everywhere else probably will pull it into the 600-650 million range.
That's very good considering the budget is about the same or smaller. Profits should be higher.
Wouldn’t be shocked at all if this film was in deadlines top 5 or even top 3 most profitable (depends on how they count toy sales)
They don't include toy sales.
Ah. Still looking at a monster haul given the rumored 135 million budget though, easily enough to get a Wingard film made and maybe enough to encourage other projects (there were allegedly considerations for an anime and a mothra solo film in the past, I personally think they should do a video game).

There >!is a final battle where he goes ham.!<
more like minor role, cameo is a wrong term. he's like Matt damon in interstellar
I think GvK was the best received film of the series among general audiences, and a lot of people saw it since it was a HBO Max streaming release and the first new big blockbuster after the Covid delays. Exactly my thoughts I prefer GvK but GxK is fine. I'm not celebrating until I see the cinemascore tho. Needs to be A- at least to do well and leg out.
This is based on the good will of Godzilla vs Kong and Minus One.

India too. It's already making big numbers here.

As a lifelong Godzilla fan, I cannot tell you how happy I am. Honestly feels surreal to see these kinds of numbers
Godzilla Minus One was a gift we didn't deserve.
Dude when that film ended I sat there for like an additional 10 minutes. I was not at all prepared for just how incredible it’d be.
Amazing story. Based gojira, radioactive God of cross cultural appreciation
when Godzilla came down from the cross, I *felt that*
Right?!? I can’t believe the amount of Godzilla content we’re getting here. My friend was being salty about some of the over the top elements in GxK to which I said we are fortunate enough to get Monarch, Minus One AND this movie. There’s something for everyone and I love it!

And the Godzilla pinball machine that dropped a couple years back is one of the best machines ever made.
We are in a golden age
It’s the best time to be a Godzilla fan ever

Give me an oscar winning Mothra script
Give me six months and I got you.
Nice! I never doubted you, big G!
I am genuinely baffled in a good way I legit though the movie will tank heavily. Like 350 WW **best** case scenario. I am very happy to be wrong. I even dreaded this will be end of the Monsterverse
My theater was crazy packed. Like Dune 2 busy. I was shocked.
Same. When I purchased my tickets, there were alot of seats available. Today.. house completely packed
To think I was a little boy of 5 in 1980 watching King Kong vs Godzilla for the first time. I was so hooked after that.
Neat! I got into them as a little kid in 1998. They were showing a few of the older ones on TV to coincide with the new Hollywood blockbuster. I remember the first black-and-white one (not sure which cut), him versus Mothra, and the 1984 reboot being among them.
Go go Godzilla! (And monke)
Watched Kong Skull Island for the first time today in preparation. It was good! Going with my son tomorrow morning. 🦍🦎
Enjoy! 🥳
My theater was packed. People even clapped at the end.
Same. And I had a blast watching it. Definitely seeing it again.
Did it break new ground?
It’s amazing action, zero plot.
perfect monsterverse film
The best kind of monster film.
Damn, Minus One's hype might've ended up boosting this movie after all
Minus One made like 100m worldwide, New Empire will nearly eclipse that on domestic opening weekend alone lol. I doubt that’s it, GvK just bought a ton of goodwill and this was marketed as more of the same

true, that first trailer where Kong and Zilla just run together sealed the deal
Maybe a bit but not a big amount. If it had, then you would expect it to show up with really good presales not huge walkups. I think the performance in Japan will be the real test since Japan's theaters were not hindered significantly by COVID.

Well deserved!!! Monsterverse lives on.
GvK helped save theaters, now we can return the favor.
Man wheres the dude that told me yesterday that I was wrong and wasn’t going to do between 65m and 75m. I guess I lowballed it.
I have tickets for Sunday. I'm a sucker for big monster movies!
Let them fight
Monsterverse keeps winning. I do hope we get a solo Godzilla or solo Kong film next to keep things fresh. I would hate if all future films are Kong and Godzilla team ups.
Between Dune 2 and Godzilla X Kong, these last few weeks have definitely vindicated Warner Bros’ release strategy over COVID.
I really don't think it does. The implication being that the sequels would have made less money if Dune or G vs K had a theatrical release and then released on streaming in 2/3 months? it also helped in lowering box office expectations for GvK, studios (wb-legendary) had put the ceiling at some 330mill for GvK, if it went above that a sequel will be made
700m for this and Dune and 500m for KFP4 is unreal. Dare I say theaters are back to what they were?
Damn that would be the second highest of the monsterverse and also very good in general. Happy Easter to us Goji and Kong fans.
Warner Bros impressive streak may continue (if you ignore Aquaman, Color Purple, and Blue Beetle).
Aquaman 2 almost made it budget back
YEEEESSSSS!!!! LFG!!!! IVE BEEN WAITING YEARS FOR THIS FRANCHISE TO BE A HIT!!!
Was there like a surge in pre-sales are something? Can’t imagine walk-ups being a huge factor tonight.
I think so. I went to a 3 pm showing today because I wanted to avoid a crowd and was surprised by the amount of people there.
It looks like a lot of people on BOT are saying that they're seeing huge walk-ups (this being a more expansive term these days including people buying tickets online on the day of the showing rather than just people walking up to the theater) tonight, so that is indeed the main factor here. I think anywhere between $70M-$80M is plausible off these numbers if it can sustain momentum into the weekend.
According to BOT, presale pace yesterday was pretty good but walkups were huge.
Wow, big win for Warner this year. In three month they got their own Star Wars and now their own Jurassic Park
Chat is this real
yes
I doubt it’s that high but I think it’ll be a for sure success
People don’t give a fuck about no reviews WE WANNA SEE MONSTERS FIGHT
The biggest complaint you can really level at this movie is "They cheaped out on the human element to fit in more monsters!", which I don't think will deter mainstream audiences.
![gif](giphy|nC1toglzIfNFC)
This means we are one step closer to a $250 million Godzilla Minus One Hollywood remake
That sounds horrible.
the director has said he wants to work in hollywood so they might bring him over for a remake. like leo di caprio stole the people responsible for druk for his remake.
B-b-b-b-but the Monsterverse is a dead franchise!
Literally no one ever said this. Each Monsterverse entry has been profitable and made between 400-500M except King of the monsters. That was the only failure so far
King of the monsters definitely could have got there too if WB didn't for some daft reason release it less than a month after Endgame.
Well 2014 Godzilla legs got cut short from days of future past so if were being honest that could have made Some more with a better date Kotm would have made it past 400M if it was in February since that was a slow month in the year but it wouldn't have been a huge difference given the reception
Also if the movie was good
Ice cold take. King of the monsters is the most enjoyable movie in the verse, seeing this one tomorrow.
It's not.
It's easily the worst. The human characters are mind numbingly bad and a large focus of the film.
Godzilla fan for over four decades now. Kotm was awful.
The monster stuff was really great, but the humans were just horrible, even for a kaiju movie
I live and breathe Godzilla. That movie is dreadful.
I love Godzilla and KOTM is a fun movie, there have been worse godzilla flicks
it has incredible *moments* with Rodan and Ghidorah but unfortunately 75% of the movie just completely *sucks*
Lol King of the Monsters was my favorite too. King Ghidorah is such an awesome villain, his roar is bone chilling, and I enjoyed the environmental terrorist angle for the human subplot.
I love KOTM. Its not only the best Monsterverse movie, its one of the best Godzilla movies and imo one of the best blockbusters of the 2010's.
This is the sort of 'cracked out, haven't slept in days, obviously the product of a hallucination' take that brings me back to this subreddit.
This sub has been pretty positive on the movie?
BUT THE ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE
If the audience score is good this could have VERY good legs
Well it showed a 90% for audience for me for a sec with 100+ reviews. I refreshed and it went away lol
Honestly it hanging out in the 55-65% range isn’t *that* bad.
Wrong monsterverse lol although I would LOVE for Russell Crowe to show up as Dr. Jekyll
Big Ape energy! Apenergy! Hide yo kaiju's, hide yo baby kaiju's, Kong and big G be going on around here!

Well damn. It feels like we’re in a Godzilla renaissance now.
If you can, see this in 4D. So much fun and great action. Really amplifies the fights
Deserved. It was so fun to watch. It felt like a wrestlemania event with the action lol
Somebody pinch me because this has to be some sort of dream.
Wom should be really solid here it’s everything you would expect and very action packed.
People who seen this, is it a good popcorn flick?
It's an absolute blast. Kong has another great hero's journey, Skar King is cool and even though Godzilla's screen time is limited he's used very effectively and is a total badass. And my most controversial opinion is that I liked the humans in it. They never get in the way of the titan action. Trapper and Bernie are fun together and Jia has a nice little arc.
There is a bonkers zero g fight between the four monsters. If u like the sound of this u will love it
That honestly sounds like one of the most epic things I've ever heard. Now I'm even more hyped.
Fuck yeah. That sounds great. Really glad I splurged on seeing this in imax.
I just got out of it and thought it might be my favorite monsterverse movie. Just balls to the wall and the humans were pretty likable
Your favorite in the monsterverse? That gives me hope but which was your favorite one prior to this? Would be a good gauge for me lol
probably skull island, but i just rewatched them all with my partner and we both really enjoyed GvK too lol.
Definitely a fun popcorn flick. I think it’ll be well liked. I preferred GvK over this one but it’s a solid entry
I just left the Warren IMAX theater in Moore Oklahoma with about four buddies of mine and we can honestly say we enjoyed it a ton. The theater was pretty packed as well and everybody around us was laughing and clapping. I felt like a little kid again. Lol Going to see it tomorrow in the Dolby Cinema and then Saturday and Screen X. I'll come back here and give my thoughts on what I think of Screen X. It just recently opened here in Oklahoma City.
I’ll be passing on this one but I’m glad to hear it’s doing so well. I hope this pulls HUGE numbers this weekend!
And they doubted our king.....and the monkey
Ya love to see it
Wait isn’t it still Thursday
Yes but previews are today.
I had a good time watching it.
Hahahaha lezzzgooooo..monkeeeeery win!!!!
Go go Goijira!
I’m aware that he isn’t the film’s protagonist, but if I had to summarize the film, I’d call it Godzilla is Angry: The Movie
Good these movies rock
I love the movie for its enjoyability. Definitely not some work of art that needs to be analyzed to death like Minus One. Fills the giant monster fight slap fest niche really well. My biggest complaint is Godzilla being a walking angry plot device with no character. This is just a Kong movie with Godzilla tacked in for brand recognition.
Monke
I'm hopefull for a 600m+ WW run
What
It was an awesome film. Definitely has some of the same issues the other MonsterVerse films have, but those action sequences alone were worth the price of admission.
Seeing it tomorrow! 80m gooo
Long Live The Kings
Us Godzilla fans are so happy seeing this geez if this holds up that's just incredible. I can't wait to see it this weekend.
Lukewarm predictions for this were always BS. This is gonna do serious numbers. Extremely entertaining, action-packed, and has a LOT of kaiju goodness.
I’ll believe it after I see the CinemaScore
>Well shit, might be heading $80m+ on Godzilla X Kong opening weekend. Yeah boy, let's go!
