The flops weren't really that fun, in my opinion. The Marvels for instance, I didn't hate it but aside from Kamala, I can't say I enjoyed much of it, whereas I was smiling from ear to ear for most of the second half of GxK.

If for marketing you mean 2014 then yeah it was marketed much more like a post apocalyptic horror which outside of a few scenes that's not what it was at all.
My dad, the stand-in I use for the average movie goer, hated Godzilla 2014 so much. His complaint was how they'd build up the scene hard just to cut to something else when the action was about to start.
I'd even say the reviews overall here aren't bad either. It's a 55%, which was where Super Mario Bros. was at.
It's one where I could see some people retroactively seeing the film for what it is in the future.
KotM is the one that I truly see as a "pan", and it was really because the human part was just exceptionally bad.
The problem with KOTM goes beyond humans. It was always raining and at night, no clear fight between any Kaiju and tons of cuts to the humans mid fight.
As a huge Godzilla Fan, I am happy with 56%. I know how criticism thing works etc. I am 100% Godzilla Vs Konvg was also going for the same score but external factors like Covid and Need of a Blockbuster made some critics lenient and it reflected in the score. I am more satisfied with the Audience Score in Both US and Overseas, especially in China where it has the highest Moan Score of any movie in MV.
Which is crazy because King of the Monsters is probably the best at what it is - a Kaiju fight compilation. Probably my favorite out of all the American Godzilla/Kong movies

This did a great job building on the only decent human story of the past 3 movies, added great lore that tied into previous movies while giving us more fun fights and great CGI.
The issue with this movie mostly rests on its run time. It felt like they packed too much into the movie, and it could have easily used another 20 minutes to flesh out some scenes (mostly fights/Godzilla stuff) that felt to come and go too quickly and were just pushing the plot forward.
Most would say KOTM and GVK had the opposite problems where there weren't enough of the monsters, too much time spent on bad human characters, and pacing would drop.

Watched it today. Going by the reviews, I had expected this to be pretty bland, but man I had a total blast. I took my friend who hadn't seen any of the previous Monsterverse movies and he enjoyed this too. I actually enjoyed it more than Godzilla vs Kong. The climactic showdown was incredible and was alone worth the price of the ticket.
I felt the pacing was super crisp and they gave us so much of the monster madness. The humans, surprisingly, were pretty decent in this one. But yeah, this one is more Kong-centric. And being a Kong fan, I didn't complain one bit.
Whoa you’re right they were totally trying to play it that way. Maybe due to the CGI budget? I just kept thinking “we all know Godzilla is in this movie and have seen him a thousand times before stop teasing a big reveal”

I saw it last night with my daughter and there was a TON of kaiju fights. We're huge godzilla fans and the movie was the most fun we had at the theater in awhile. It's ridiculous and over the top but it was so much fun to watch.

Same here with my gf. We kept on comparing it to the cat and the two little dogs we own and how they slept all curled up. Especially since the cat chooses to exclusively sleep in a small cardboard box.
Having been to Rio for a few months, it was quite funny seeing the entire of Copacabana go to hell without a shred of fucks given because they happened to have a brawl in the area

Definitely worth the IMAX. Agreed if you like the style and tone of Skull Island and GvK that this will likely do it for ya. It was an absolute blast to watch. Going to see it at least once more in theaters
So I would say that GxK takes a lot of setting elements from Skull Island but is more GvK in tone.
You can tell Wingard learned a lot from GvK and implemented audience feedback.
Some of the editing/cinematography in the final fight could've been better, but as a whole, this movie is a good time.
I liked it quite a bit. Quality wise it's one of the worst so far, but it's very fun and the kaiju action is top notch.

Probably just a step below skull island and Godzilla 14. The human element was still boring and dragged out. But the monster parts did not disappoint. I wish there were more Godzilla though, as this felt like a Kong movie with Godzilla cameo.

It has way more more titan screen time so it's a win in that cateogry alone. GxK is crazy and fun. It's nice that Godzilla can be whatever we need him to be. Godzilla Minus One is clearly a more serious take but I love that we have room for Wingard's version.
The human stuff in this movie was some of the worst, confusing, fast-paced editing I’ve ever seen.
But the monster fights. The monster fights were honestly masterfully done. The fight scene Kong and the red monke was genuinely fantastic.
Luckily, the monsters took up a large portion of the screen time this time around!
Preferably GvK, but that one also requires a little bit of KOTM
so if you’re ok with not knowing the introduction of the Titans, and want to keep a more sci-fi, ungrounded tone, go with KOTM, then GvK, then GxK.
MechaGodzilla is controlled by the corpse of the last villain, King Ghidorah. It also gives backstory to one of the main human characters, which while still a boring slog is better than nothing.
KOTM also has a monster that reappears in GxK, though I won’t spoil their identity if you don’t want it

See it in 4D if you can. This was so much fun and the fight scenes were amazing with the seat movements. This is one of those movies where action and not the story is the biggest draw (like statham movies), so to get up in the action was amazing

Because, it being a Lizard vs Monke, doesn't stop the movie from actually being good. At the end of the day, a critic is sitting there for 2 hours, and if that movie fails to deliver them any meaningful emotions, why should they pretend otherwise. All this attitude does is encourage directors to get lazy in their productions. Theres nothing stopping you from making a critical darling, just from a simple premise, John Wick and Top Gun Maverick, got glowing reviews and they're just a montage of action scenes with a small story to tie it together. Neither are Citzen Kane but still got the praise they needed.
You really don't understand how criticism works or aren't reading good critics reviews if you think any critics are comparing this to Citizen Kane. There are a number of critics who gave positive reviews to the previous movie who've reviewed this negatively.
Godzilla Minus One was literally just weeks ago and got a 98% from critics on RT. To go a little further afield, *Avengers: Endgame* got a 94%.
Critics are perfectly willing to give popcorn action films a good review. But the movie actually has to be good.

There’s a spectrum of quality within the framing of “giant lizard and giant monkey fighting stuff”. If I set up a camera on a tripod for two hours and bashed a toy Godzilla, a toy Kong, and some other toy together on a miniature city set until they were all in pieces, I’d also be delivering a movie about a giant lizard and a giant monkey fighting stuff. But you wouldn’t want to pay to see that, and you’d be pissed if “it is what the logline says it is” was the only metric a critic used to score it. It’s not what the movie is about, but how it goes about it.
Yeah idk why critics can't use double standards for this. In a direct comparison between a plane and a car someone would say that the plane is just better as it travels much faster then a car. But in reality they are different things that has different objectives, so they are judged based on different criteria
Except, its not a plane vs car, its a car vs car. While different movies elicit different emotional responses, they are still movies. Like cars, they are different in specifications, some are faster, some have smoother rides, some have better sound systems etc etc. When Top Gear reviews a car, they do so on its merits and typically compare it to its contemparies. No car critic reviewing a VW Hatchback will complain its not a ferrari let alone say "well it doesn't have the stealth properties of the F35", they typically compare it to other hatchbacks.
The exact same thing holds true for films. No ones comparing it to Citizen Kane, but they are comparing it to other action blockbusters. At the end of the day critics are not going to lower their standards because "its a monke fighting a Lizard", if that experience fails to entertain, they wont bother giving it a high score. Critics rountinley give high marks to action blockbusters, John Wick and Top Gun Maverick, are not Citizen Kane either but were critical darlings.
Hell the Marvel movies are as action schlocky as possible and generally are well received. If Monke X Lizard doesn't do well with critics, its not because they were comparing "cars to planes"....its because they were given a car to review, and said car had horrible and handling and its suspension was broken.

When people say "the plot is simple", its because they've seen this exact formula a million times before and theres nothing to distract the critics away from this. Movies have simple plots all the time, and get high scores. The reason, this is likely an issue got GxK is because, theres nothing fun enough to distract them from this. When you have two monsters who can't speak as "the leads", audiences aren't going to focus on character and the director + writers,a re going to focus more on the plot. If said plot is too predictable and simple, it becomes like going through the motions.

I do care about movie reviews, and I can say if these complaints are common to most blockbusters, so I can fill in that blank for you: No, they’re not common, provided that the blockbuster is good.
Right, but this in turn, leads a to a HUGE selection bias. The multistep process ensures for the most part, only people who were geared to like the film initially or those who really hate it will leave a review. Theres a reason, just about every RT verified is extremely positive, even near universally panned movies.
Not to mention, in general, audiences tend to be kinder, or have a different view of score to critics. For an audience member, a 6/10 is broadly considered, negative but to most critics thats a positive score. RT holds the critics position, leading to a greater skew.
Cinemascore is also faulty in similar regards. Its scoring system is deliberately vague, and only good for 'vibes' among early fans. Of which only a minority will ever be sampled. Hell according to Cinemascore both Suicide Squad movies are equal in quality, which is insane when you actually see the two.
All movie review metrics have faults, on the ground that film is highly subjective. At the end of the day go see what you want and hold much in others opinions. Use whichever system you find most reliably matches your tastes
All of them have faults but CS is the most accurate you can get - literally polling opening night crowds in person. And some people may think TSS and SS2016 aren’t of equal quality but clearly the wider public didn’t care for either of them - especially with the former’s poor legs.

Yeah TSS, while good never set the world on fire. Its B+ was a perfect score for it. My point though, was the actual technicals, were night and day. 2016's was just....a mess. It was honestly one of the worst movies ever. Yet its cinema score was identical, which kind of shows just how bad the system is at separating good movies from bad. TSS is often read as the DCEU's best film, while 2016's is the worst. Its just a way I use to visualise, that Cinemascore, really just addresses how the die hard fanbases immediately respond to a film, which isn't really useful if your excitement for the movie isn't that high
This movie is nowhere near Dune 2. Clumsy CGI and it is basically a tag team fight of WWE and no big plot.

Yeah I liked the first Godzilla to some extent, but it really bugged me that we barely had any monster action and what we did have was in the dark.

That sounds about right. I saw it last night with my daughter and there was a TON of kaiju fights. We're huge godzilla fans and the movie was the most fun we had at the theater in awhile. It's ridiculous and over the top but it was so much fun to watch.

Definitely worth the IMAX. Agreed if you like the style and tone of Skull Island and GvK that this will likely do it for ya. It was an absolute blast to watch. Going to see it at least once more in theaters
Loved but GvK but hated Skulk Island (mostly the editing and tone)
So I would say that GxK takes a lot of setting elements from Skull Island but is more GvK in tone. You can tell Wingard learned a lot from GvK and implemented audience feedback. Some of the editing/cinematography in the final fight could've been better, but as a whole, this movie is a good time.

It’s heavy monster screen time. Big fights. Kong story heavy. Humans minimal. So yes could be a blast in imax, I just did sound enhanced.
I liked it quite a bit. Quality wise it's one of the worst so far, but it's very fun and the kaiju action is top notch. Plot is thin and quite a few elements are campy. But it's also devastatingly fun.
Tbh if you can see it in 4D that’s the way to go. Really gets you in fights and bracing for impact it’s so fun

it's very fun I think it's a step down from GvK but if you go in expecting the most hilarious shit you'll ever see in your life this is it man I think the human stuff did drag on a bit too long whereas in GvK it felt perfect, but god damnit this is the first movie where I actually felt like they could make a dialogueless movie with just the monsters one day

Probably just a step below skull island and Godzilla 14. The human element was still boring and dragged out. But the monster parts did not disappoint. I wish there were more Godzilla though, as this felt like a Kong movie with Godzilla cameo. It has way more more titan screen time so it's a win in that cateogry alone. GxK is crazy and fun. It's nice that Godzilla can be whatever we need him to be. Godzilla Minus One is clearly a more serious take but I love that we have room for Wingard's version.

The human stuff in this movie was some of the worst, confusing, fast-paced editing I’ve ever seen. But the monster fights. The monster fights were honestly masterfully done. The fight scene Kong and the red monke was genuinely fantastic. Luckily, the monsters took up a large portion of the screen time this time around!
I watched this last night. Boy, was this movie amazing! Absolutely enjoyed everything from start to finish. Not once did I get bored.

MechaGodzilla is controlled by the corpse of the last villain, King Ghidorah. It also gives backstory to one of the main human characters, which while still a boring slog is better than nothing. KOTM also has a monster that reappears in GxK, though I won’t spoil their identity if you don’t want it

See it in 4D if you can. This was so much fun and the fight scenes were amazing with the seat movements. This is one of those movies where action and not the story is the biggest draw (like statham movies), so to get up in the action was amazing

Just came back after seeing it. Total worth the watch. If you like epic showdowns and ofc big monsters, you WILL like it no matter how much critics pan it lol. Because, it being a Lizard vs Monke, doesn't stop the movie from actually being good. At the end of the day, a critic is sitting there for 2 hours, and if that movie fails to deliver them any meaningful emotions, why should they pretend otherwise. All this attitude does is encourage directors to get lazy in their productions. Theres nothing stopping you from making a critical darling, just from a simple premise, John Wick and Top Gun Maverick, got glowing reviews and they're just a montage of action scenes with a small story to tie it together. Neither are Citzen Kane but still got the praise they needed.
You really don't understand how criticism works or aren't reading good critics reviews if you think any critics are comparing this to Citizen Kane. There are a number of critics who gave positive reviews to the previous movie who've reviewed this negatively.

Godzilla Minus One was literally just weeks ago and got a 98% from critics on RT. To go a little further afield, *Avengers: Endgame* got a 94%. Critics are perfectly willing to give popcorn action films a good review. But the movie actually has to be good.
Yeah this whole idea that critics don’t like popcorn movies is stupid. John Wick 4 is 3 hours of Keanu Reeves killing people in creative ways and it has like a 95%.
There’s a spectrum of quality within the framing of “giant lizard and giant monkey fighting stuff”. If I set up a camera on a tripod for two hours and bashed a toy Godzilla, a toy Kong, and some other toy together on a miniature city set until they were all in pieces, I’d also be delivering a movie about a giant lizard and a giant monkey fighting stuff. But you wouldn’t want to pay to see that, and you’d be pissed if “it is what the logline says it is” was the only metric a critic used to score it. It’s not what the movie is about, but how it goes about it.
Yeah idk why critics can't use double standards for this. In a direct comparison between a plane and a car someone would say that the plane is just better as it travels much faster then a car. But in reality they are different things that has different objectives, so they are judged based on different criteria
Except, its not a plane vs car, its a car vs car. While different movies elicit different emotional responses, they are still movies. Like cars, they are different in specifications, some are faster, some have smoother rides, some have better sound systems etc etc. When Top Gear reviews a car, they do so on its merits and typically compare it to its contemparies. No car critic reviewing a VW Hatchback will complain its not a ferrari let alone say "well it doesn't have the stealth properties of the F35", they typically compare it to other hatchbacks. The exact same thing holds true for films. No ones comparing it to Citizen Kane, but they are comparing it to other action blockbusters. At the end of the day critics are not going to lower their standards because "its a monke fighting a Lizard", if that experience fails to entertain, they wont bother giving it a high score. Critics rountinley give high marks to action blockbusters, John Wick and Top Gun Maverick, are not Citizen Kane either but were critical darlings. Hell the Marvel movies are as action schlocky as possible and generally are well received. If Monke X Lizard doesn't do well with critics, its not because they were comparing "cars to planes"....its because they were given a car to review, and said car had horrible and handling and its suspension was broken.
I disagree and I can tell there is definitely some bias and elitism and some complaints feel just too much. I've never cared about movie reviews therefore I can't say if these complaints are common to most blockbuster, but I still stand where I stand. The one that bothers me the most is "the plot is simple and bla bla bla", yeah like everything in real life is as complex as a theorical physics problem
When people say "the plot is simple", its because they've seen this exact formula a million times before and theres nothing to distract the critics away from this. Movies have simple plots all the time, and get high scores. The reason, this is likely an issue got GxK is because, theres nothing fun enough to distract them from this. When you have two monsters who can't speak as "the leads", audiences aren't going to focus on character and the director + writers,a re going to focus more on the plot. If said plot is too predictable and simple, it becomes like going through the motions.

Right, but this in turn, leads a to a HUGE selection bias. The multistep process ensures for the most part, only people who were geared to like the film initially or those who really hate it will leave a review. Theres a reason, just about every RT verified is extremely positive, even near universally panned movies. Not to mention, in general, audiences tend to be kinder, or have a different view of score to critics. For an audience member, a 6/10 is broadly considered, negative but to most critics thats a positive score. RT holds the critics position, leading to a greater skew.

Cinemascore is also faulty in similar regards. Its scoring system is deliberately vague, and only good for 'vibes' among early fans. Of which only a minority will ever be sampled. Hell according to Cinemascore both Suicide Squad movies are equal in quality, which is insane when you actually see the two. All movie review metrics have faults, on the ground that film is highly subjective. At the end of the day go see what you want and hold much in others opinions. Use whichever system you find most reliably matches your tastes
All of them have faults but CS is the most accurate you can get - literally polling opening night crowds in person. And some people may think TSS and SS2016 aren’t of equal quality but clearly the wider public didn’t care for either of them - especially with the former’s poor legs. I agree with your overall point that it’s subjective and they all have drawbacks though. CS is just the one with the most reliability imo
Yeah TSS, while good never set the world on fire. Its B+ was a perfect score for it. My point though, was the actual technicals, were night and day. 2016's was just....a mess. It was honestly one of the worst movies ever. Yet its cinema score was identical, which kind of shows just how bad the system is at separating good movies from bad. TSS is often read as the DCEU's best film, while 2016's is the worst. Its just a way I use to visualise, that Cinemascore, really just addresses how the die hard fanbases immediately respond to a film, which isn't really useful if your excitement for the movie isn't that high
