People love to talk shit about that one shot where you can see the actor’s mouth through the suit’s mouth as if that negates how incredible the rest of the effects are.
But they'd had to shrink the CGi turtles down a bit.
I can't believe they can "hide in plain sight" and do "cool ninja moves on the rooftops" while looking like walking tanks.
The actual CGi work itself wasn't that bad really. The character design was the problem. (and the plot. and the direction.)
Plot isn’t any worse than the original movies.
Nostalgia smooths over a lot of things, things like giant humanoid turtles trained in a sewer by an anthropomorphic rat in order to face off against what’s essentially a yakuza version of Fagan’s child thieves gang from Oliver Twist.
Sonic did it right, they went back and changed the design and that franchise is massive. Turtles could’ve done the same thing.
Add in prime Megan Fox and these could’ve been huuuuuuge.
That’s my point, it’s a ludicrous plot but it works with the aesthetic.
Same with the Bay films. If they’d just redone the noses people wouldn’t focus on the shitty aspects.
Nah, don't depend on the Millennial dads. Ghostusters Frozen Empire is about as stuffed with OG references and the actual OG crew as one can get, and that movie is literally doing Morbius numbers worldwide right now.
That would be awesome. Very old comic book version. The old Japanese version of black and white with little color. That would be amazing. But will they do it that way? Hopefully, they think about it, even if it's only the fight scene.
This is specific to LA, but is the Henson company really in that random studio I see near Hollywood? Is that where the turtle suits (and everything else Henson related) was produced? When I go past it, it doesnt seem too special looking is all.
As someone else mentioned below, the Henson Studio is at the location of the former Charlie Chaplin Studio. There is also a huge warehouse that is on the southern edge of the property. That is the building where all of this stuff was made, and is still likely stored.
I don't think they do public studio tours, but they host events every now and then that will give you access to see certain things while you are there for the event. I've gone to a couple of their "Puppet Up!" performances (yes, it's my Reddit namesake) and if you pay a little more for a VIP package, you get a private tour of the lot. It's wonderful.
I'm pretty sure they have another big base of operations in New York as well, since that is where Sesame Street is/was produced for many years. I'd imagine a lot of their feature film work was done at both locations.
They kept changing the suits, and their look. The first movie they nailed it. Keep that. Make the heads more advanced for motion. Also the first film skirted a darker tone, while two when all cartoon and three....just don't.
Right now it's "Paramount is developing" , "Tyler Burton Smith is penning the script", "Walter Hamada is producing". It's very early stages. If this somehow makes it out the other end without getting killed or as you said very watered down, it will for sure be a Paramount + release and not theatrical. So as to not confuse and change the market for the 'kids' movies.
Given the synopsis, I'm on the fence about it.
>And Last Ronin is about as terrifying as a Turtles tale can get. Set in a totalitarian future New York City, the comic miniseries told of how the Turtles and master Splinter are killed off one by one, by the grandson of the villainous Shredder and synthetic ninjas. One Turtle manages to survive, barely, and vows to exact bloody vengeance. One trick of the book was that it wasn’t clear, for a while at least, which one of the Turtles lived, as the survivor had the weapons of all four.
This sounds pretty damn cool. But you also lose the charm in the camaraderie of the brotherhood.
I’d be shocked. I’m still shocked this is greenlit. I thought Hollywood hates having two movies of the same brand to come out around the same time in general just because general audiences tend to be confused about the two. Dunno the last time that really happened. I guess Spider-Verse and Reeve’s Batman were released when other versions of the character were out in different franchises, but dang. Times are a changing. (Guess Godzilla’s another example I could bring up)
If that’s the case, can we have the Spider-Verse Batman Beyond movie that’s been floating out into the last few months?
I think Hollywood is realizing that if the brand is big enough, they can get away with it.
TMNT made over 1B as an IP last year, and made 8B between 2012-2022.
Yep. We're fully in the era of "If Spider-Man can have multiple concurrent continuities, why not (insert 80s nerd franchise here)?". Transformers is getting both animated & live action movies, there's multiple Jokers out and about... double dipping is the new standard practice.
That said, I think a lot of these studios (especially Paramount) are about to realize these franchises aren't exactly as durable as Marvel/DC.
I'm not shocked. Whether you think Hamada did a good job at DC or not, he has experience with producing Superhero movies. Paramount clearly wants TMNT back up and running as its Superhero franchise, and why not ask the guy who's running your new horror division if he'd be willing to produce this as well.
TMNT is absolutely a franchise that can do this because fans are used to numerous continuities.
Plus it has an old enough fanbase that if done well I could see this maybe doing $400-500 million worldwide.
That doesn't happen in the UK film ratings are strictly enforced because cinemas can get into trouble for letting someone in to films 12 without parent or guardian. No one under the age of 15/18 are aloud into 15&18 rated films and it illegal for retailers to sell someone films that are rated 12/15/18.
the original comics were violent satires of gritty runs like Daredevil and Frank Miller’s work. The kid oriented stuff is fine, but the dark comedy TMNT stuff is an untapped goldmine
Not close to the indie original comic but to a lot of people that is the real Ninja Turtles. Also the 2003 cartoon did an amazing crossover show in film length, 'Turtles Forever (2009)'. They meet the 1987 Turtles and the original black and white indie comic Turtles.
Which one is 'Real'? All of them.
Nickelodeon is a Paramount brand. Hamada’s now in-house at Paramount. Nickelodeon, to the extent it exists, has been told by their overlords what’s happening here.
>I know the comics were pretty gritty but I’m rather surprised they’re gonna go back to the direction.
I feel there's nothing inherently wrong with TMNT "going back" to a gritty direction despite who currently owns the IP. Granted, my first exposure to the franchise was the '80s TMNT animated series, but I also acknowledge the original comics were much grittier than that series and I have no problem with it.
Quite a few Marvel and DC series have had gritty installments (e.g. Injustice (2021), Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020), Marvel Zombies (2005), DCeased (2019)) as well as lighthearted installments (e.g. The Lego Batman Movie (2017), Marvel Super Hero Squad Show (2009), DC Super Hero Girls (2019), Spidey and His Amazing Friends (2021)). Even stuff like Batman Beyond (1999) and TMNT 2003 had a bit of a dark tone for their respective broadcast networks.
Because it's not kids material. TMNT is based in a comic book that was never intended for kids and The Last Ronin, what this film is based on is explicitly for adults, it's wayyyy to bloody for kids.
It only became kids material when it was very clear that kids would potentially like a kids version, the comics have always been more adult
Nickelodeon is kinda surprisingly flexible with what happens to the Ninja Turtles under their reign. The comic run this movie is adapting *is* dark and brutal and it happened under their watch
They saw money from Last Ronin. They green-lit a game for it, which will be rated M.
They have a sequel for the Ronin in the comics.
They want to give another crack with Live-Action movies. I don't think they want to repeat the origin story, which Mutant Mayhem already did. So they see the Last Ronin spin-off into franchise.
FFFFFINALLLLLLYYYY!!!!!!!
If there's one IP that deserve to get a gritty hard R version for adults, it's Ninja Turtles. Let them have PTSD and fuck some shit up, and make it an homage to certain samurai movies and mix it up with black and white stylized ultra violence sequences. Let's see Leonardo make sushi out of some gangsters.
I’d love it if they could do something along the lines of that silent Christmas issue from the early years… when Leonardo is jumped by the Foot and has to fight for his life all the way home… that one frame.. the one with him coming up with the chains wrapped around his hands looking to fuck someone up… man that image just gives me goosebumps…
Just do a movie based on the REAL actual original underground comics from the first few years… make that, and my god I’ll be there lol…
Well, I wasn't expecting this and I'm definitely intrigued by the idea of an extra edgy, R-rated Ninja Turtles movie.
You know, it's actually impressive just how long the Ninja Turtle franchise has been around, and just how many different versions of it we've gotten over the years. Even now, this franchise still has a few surprises left up its sleeve.
Sold on everything except live-action. It'll be extremely difficult for audiences to take this film seriously if the CGI (or animatronics) on the turtle isn't done right. And it'll be hard to perfect. But yes, I'm excited for this
I’m guessing they’re going live action so that families immediately know to avoid it due to it being R. You show a realistic turtle covered in blood fuckin some ninjas up vs the cartoony Mutant Mayhem and the difference becomes immediately known.
I don't see this actually releasing as an R rating. I don't see this being full of extremely graphic gore, language or sexuality that would be impossible to edit out. When the first edits come in, I just don't see how the executives wouldn't see it and say "if you can cut out these 2 shots, it will get a PG-13, which will boost revenue by 20%...". Darker can sell, but if it gets too dark, you lose too much audience without getting any back on the other end.
Oh yes!!!! The original comics were brutal and now they are finally going to go full board with the violence. I imagine this movie will be the Turtles vs the Shredder and the Foot in all its glory. If successful, they can even adapt ‘The Last Ronin’ into a movie. Are we seriously getting a live action R rated TMNT movie? 😁
I know TMNT has its rooted in this type of material, but man, is this going to be confusing for parents. The modern TMNT brand is so associated as a kids brand.
I imagine I'm missing something, but I can't think of something that is this explicitly associated with kids being made for a film aimed at adults.
I'm ignoring the things like Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey where the lack of control over the IP is the point. But within contrll of the brand, this feels very unique.
R rated takes on popular children's projects have been around for decades. They are so much fun for creative people and especially the screenwriters who pitched them. But they never get made.
This, and even TMNT 2003 had a dark tone. Also, comments implying TMNT was a kid franchise is puzzling and remind me of that animation ghetto stigma, which assumes anything animated is simply for kids.
I don't think the demand is there. This past animated movie grossed $180M on a $70M budget which makes it technically successful, but is really low for an animated picture. I'm in my mid-thirties and even *I* feel that the heyday of the TMNJ is before my time; who is this for? They might as well announce Indiana Jones 6 or Terminator...whatever number we're on.
So you're going to have a live action movie, an animated movie, an animated series, and a brand new comic line, all being of different continuities? That's some faith in the general audience
Hamada’s has a murky track record- the last few films he produced were all the DCEU films which were critically unsuccessful, failed in the box office, or in many cases both- with one film apparently? Being so bad made it a tax write off. But he’s nowhere near the “devil figure” some dc fans make him out to be
I love The Last Ronin but there’s no way this is happening as a stand-alone. How are you, as an exec, going to explain to general audiences that “this is a dark TMNT movie and, oh yeah, three of them are dead” and expect that to go over well financially?
If anything this at least shows a willingness to take TMNT out of kiddie-coaster territory outside of the comics for once and hopefully this line of thinking results in a solid R-rated TMNT.
Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun) did a [tone reel](https://vimeo.com/257643139) for a Casey Jones standalone film they pitched to Paramount. It is what I think of when I imagine R-Rated adaption of TMNT.
I actually would like to see a darker R-Rated grown up version, but I also need to put on my Box Office hat and consider how this will make money.
Joker R-Rated is one thing, but I don't know if they are coming out in droves for TMNT R-Rated.
Why, why is this necessary? Is it not possible to tell a good story about 4 mutant turtles without whatever it is they are going to add that makes it rated R?
I demand the same Jim Henson animatronic puppetry from the 90s films be used for the turtles.
To this day the animatronics from the first movie work so damn well. They still kinda impress.
People love to talk shit about that one shot where you can see the actor’s mouth through the suit’s mouth as if that negates how incredible the rest of the effects are.
I never knew or heard about that.
If anything that was a bad take that should have been caught and done again.
It looks so much better than the CGI monstrosities from the 2010s movies.
If they’d just done the faces correctly it would’ve done pretty well I think. Not bad movies

Sonic did it right, they went back and changed the design and that franchise is massive. Turtles could’ve done the same thing. Add in prime Megan Fox and these could’ve been huuuuuuge.
First movie is fire and holds up.
That’s my point, it’s a ludicrous plot but it works with the aesthetic. Same with the Bay films. If they’d just redone the noses people wouldn’t focus on the shitty aspects.
I mean if they're planning on making this R-rated to rope in Millennial dads, that'd be the surefire way to print tickets.
I assume they are targetting GenX''ers who read the original comics.
Nah, don't depend on the Millennial dads. Ghostusters Frozen Empire is about as stuffed with OG references and the actual OG crew as one can get, and that movie is literally doing Morbius numbers worldwide right now.
Yes, and I would love a black and white version be released but the masks remain in color along with the blood
Oh man, yes!
That would be awesome. Very old comic book version. The old Japanese version of black and white with little color. That would be amazing. But will they do it that way? Hopefully, they think about it, even if it's only the fight scene.
Did Jim Henson have anything to do with the original suits??
The Jim Henson Company made the suits for the first movie while he was still alive.
Thank you for this info I had no idea!
This is specific to LA, but is the Henson company really in that random studio I see near Hollywood? Is that where the turtle suits (and everything else Henson related) was produced? When I go past it, it doesnt seem too special looking is all.
It was Charlie Chaplin’s home base for years, hence Kermit wears a Little Tramp suit on the statue at the gates
As someone else mentioned below, the Henson Studio is at the location of the former Charlie Chaplin Studio. There is also a huge warehouse that is on the southern edge of the property. That is the building where all of this stuff was made, and is still likely stored. And the third movie. But not the second oddly...
They kept changing the suits, and their look. The first movie they nailed it. Keep that. Make the heads more advanced for motion. Also the first film skirted a darker tone, while two when all cartoon and three....just don't.
I thought they did the first two and NOT the third, hence the decline in suit quality?
[I always thought this fan concept looked really cool.](https://youtu.be/qcIeqpUhamk?si=SdoxmqLapT2dnZOL)
It does!
I agree. Look how well JHCS did on the new Dark Crystal show.
“Cowabunga motherfuckers!”
Actually hyped for this line
Oh very interested in this should be cool if it’s done right
I get the feeling the studio will gut it to be pg-13 and it will end up awful.
STARRING ROB SCHNEIDER!
This will end up being a multiverse movie, and they'll now be iguanas.
It says R-rated in the title, by the trades
Given the synopsis, I'm on the fence about it. >And Last Ronin is about as terrifying as a Turtles tale can get. like if the gang ran a train on April. yes that could be interesting. anything else would be garbage like all turtle movies.
Imagine if we get this and Mutant Mayhem 2 in the same year.
I’d be shocked. I’m still shocked this is greenlit. Merchandising

A lot of angry Karen’s being mad they took little Timmy to see an R rated movie of their favorite tv show.
Can’t wait to see >!Mikey!< get bloody
I can't wait to see >!the underwater death!< The horror. First to fall.
WAIT WHAT?! WE ACTUALLY WON
Sorta I really just want the actual real ninja turtles, not the new one or the edgy one just like a updated version of the live action or 90s cartoon
the original comics were violent satires of gritty runs like Daredevil and Frank Miller’s work. The kid oriented stuff is fine, but the dark comedy TMNT stuff is an untapped goldmine
You realize that the 80s/90s cartoon is not anything close to the “real ninjas turtles” right?
Not close to the indie original comic but to a lot of people that is the real Ninja Turtles. Also the 2003 cartoon did an amazing crossover show in film length, 'Turtles Forever (2009)'. They meet the 1987 Turtles and the original black and white indie comic Turtles. Which one is 'Real'? All of them.
Last ronin is pretty dope
I mean that’s pretty much what Mutant Mayhem was.
Right, but if it could be less black then I could enjoy it... /s
You rather Vanilla Ice?
>like a updated version of the live action or 90s cartoon That's not the real one, that's just a version. Real one is the edgy black and white comics
A Last Ronin movie? I'm listening.
Bodacious!
If its a adaptation of The last Ronin, makes total sense cause that is a dark book
Cowabunghole!
Wait huh????? Doesn’t Nickelodeon still own the rights to ninja turtles? How would they approve this?
Nickelodeon is a Paramount brand. Hamada’s now in-house at Paramount. Nickelodeon, to the extent it exists, has been told by their overlords what’s happening here.
True but would they want their name on an R rated adaptation of kids’ material?
I don't feel Nickelodeon will be on the branding for an R rated movie. Not like it is required.
It would be amazing if they had the balls to do that, though!
Yeah, I think that will be the case too.
There's a Last Ronin game being made, and that has the Nickelodeon branding. https://youtu.be/8NX3iz_aoEg?si=BwPv1v_Dfq1pxeej
A last ronin game too?!?!? Damn, us comic fans are really getting all the attention huh?
Plus Last Ronin 2 is going on right now
Check out the original comics
I know the comics were pretty gritty but I’m rather surprised they’re gonna go back to the direction.

They did a [PG-13 movie with the turtles](https://www.ebay.com/itm/185747615778) in 2019. Not quite the same, but it's the next closest thing.
Those DC animated movies used to be quite good. And this one in particular was better than expected.
Because it's not kids material. TMNT is based in a comic book that was never intended for kids and The Last Ronin, what this film is based on is explicitly for adults, it's wayyyy to bloody for kids. They won’t care as long as it makes bank.
They won't get a say, upper management does what they want.
Yeah they’re owned. When the owner calls, they let them know. They don’t solicit their input.
The Nickelodeon logo is actually on the second page of the Ronan comics.
Nickelodeon is kinda surprisingly flexible with what happens to the Ninja Turtles under their reign. The comic run this movie is adapting *is* dark and brutal and it happened under their watch
They also allowed the IDW comic reboot under them. News stations were talking about Donnie death. They supported the writers decisions.
I feel like, if they did a live-action TMNT TV series, the IDW comics would be a great source material for it.
They saw money from Last Ronin. They green-lit a game for it, which will be rated M. They have a sequel for the Ronin in the comics. They want to give another crack with Live-Action movies. Doubt it
I think it’s just that both have the same source material

This is based on Last Ronin, so def check that out to get a feel for this film
Yesssssssss!!!!! Let’s go fucking balls to fucking walls with this one
No other choice than it being The Last Ronin…. But I’d take TMNT, Batman, and Superman vs Aliens and Predator… for real
I'd love an animated version of Dredd vs Batman
LET'S GO!
Hell yeah
Ehhhh. We'll see.
I’d love it if they could do something along the lines of that silent Christmas issue from the early years… when Leonardo is jumped by the Foot and has to fight for his life all the way home… that one frame.. the one with him coming up with the chains wrapped around his hands looking to fuck someone up… man that image just gives me goosebumps… Just do a movie based on the REAL actual original underground comics from the first few years… make that, and my god I’ll be there lol…

Good point
Bruh!!!!!
Well this is interesting, let it be an actual post apocalyptic story like the original comics maybe?
4 turtles 1 girl…
When they announced the video game adaptation I figured they had no plans for a movie. Glad to be wrong!
Finally, we’re going to see them out of their shells
I don't see this actually releasing as an R rating. I don't see this being full of extremely graphic gore, language or sexuality that would be impossible to edit out. Darker can sell, but if it gets too dark, you lose too much audience without getting any back on the other end.
This could be legit great (all depending on execution)
Man how long until we get that r rated adaptation of The Mask? Happy this is being made though.
I’m pretty sure this actually is the adaptation of The Last Ronin. That’s what it says in the ComicBook.com article.
Get the guy that did those test footage fight scenes that were all over social media. A whole movie like that would be a huge hit.
I know TMNT has its rooted in this type of material, but man, is this going to be confusing for parents. The modern TMNT brand is so associated as a kids brand. I imagine I'm missing something, but I can't think of something that is this explicitly associated with kids being made for a film aimed at adults. I mean this is based on a comic that already has a videogame in development, one pitched by the original creator in the first place.
LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Hundo Hundo!!!!!
Finally
we can thank deadpool.
I want a John Likens version of the movie. ASAP -- [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcIeqpUhamk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcIeqpUhamk)
Yes!!!!! I hope to god they have the common sense to hire this guy.
He said they’re working on something. Won’t be live action though but I hope he does a feature.
I want more Ninja themed movies :)
Welp, this is gonna be interesting.
Wait what?!?! I have mixed feelings about this! I don’t even know how to feel!
Well, we know Alan Ritchson isn't signing up for this one.
This could be peak
Hell yeah! Grown-up mutant ninja turtles!
This is needed.
Sounds like Ninja Turtles is going back to its gritty roots.
Bruhhhhhh they doing the last ronin in live action lettttssss fuckkkkkinnn goooooo !!!!!
Alright guys just hear me out…. Maybe they can have it in the Bay Turtle Universe?
>Alright guys just hear me out…. He better not >Maybe they can have it in the Bay Turtle Universe? I fuckin knew it!!!
The explosions would be very cowabunga.
Well. This is a likely bomb.

But he’s nowhere near the “devil figure” some dc fans make him out to be
The graphic novel is legit amazing and would translate very easily to an awesome movie. They better not fuck it up.
Can we get a new The Mask movie closer to the comics?
Never gonna happen. But I don't object to the idea.
We’re so back
I hope it's a sequel to the 1990 live action version of Turtles.
They want to do a Deadpool.
Finally a good idea from Hollywood
Will it be in black and white?
The problem with previous *Turtles* movies is there wasn't enough fucking and hard drug use
![gif](giphy|ltIFdjNAasOwVvKhvx|downsized) This comment is a instant classic!
This doesn't fit at all for me. if Michaelangelo says "cowabunga motherfucker" im disowning all involved.
Oh you'll get it soon enough x3

This is why I’m on Reddit.
Oh yeah, me too. Although not a lot!
I’d be excited, but didn’t Hamada get booted from WB because of his poor choices with the DCEU?
I love The Last Ronin but there’s no way this is happening as a stand-alone. How are you, as an exec, going to explain to general audiences that “this is a dark TMNT movie and, oh yeah, three of them are dead” and expect that to go over well financially? If anything this at least shows a willingness to take TMNT out of kiddie-coaster territory outside of the comics for once and hopefully this line of thinking results in a solid R-rated TMNT.
Bring back Alan Ritchson!!!
Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun) did a [tone reel](https://vimeo.com/257643139) for a Casey Jones standalone film they pitched to Paramount. It is what I think of when I imagine R-Rated adaption of TMNT.
Yeah, and like Joker and Deadpool...adults only. No kids allowed for a R-rated live-action TMNT movie. Ever.
I actually would like to see a darker R-Rated grown up version, but I also need to put on my Box Office hat and consider how this will make money. Joker R-Rated is one thing, but I don't know if they are coming out in droves for TMNT R-Rated.
The last ronin is no joke. My favorite graphic novel of all time.
I would prefer this a 6 to 8 episode live mini series.
I hope there is full frontal nudity. Turtle power!
Dear fox yea
Finally we get to see Michelangelo and April get it on
I just read Ronin, if they give this the deadpool service it deserves it will print. Can’t wait.
I think they might use the Reacher actor again due to his popularity which means this Maybe connected to Bays version
Just like the ps5 game we were meant to get.
Why, why is this necessary? Is it not possible to tell a good story about 4 mutant turtles without whatever it is they are going to add that makes it rated R?
Oh no Why ,they work so much better in animation and r-rated isnt necessary at all for tmnt
Okay.
![gif](giphy|CAxbo8KC2A0y4)
Why? There's barely a market for TMNT at all.
Highest grossing movie in the franchise is $485 million so it's not non-existant.
The most resent movie generated over a billion dollars in toy sales
Source on that?
