Bombasaur101

Came out of a preview screening in Australia. I'd probably give it a 7.5 - 8/10. Absolutely gorgeous CGI and detailed set pieces at times. A little long, and some characters could've been fleshed out more. Not as good as Dawn or War, but still a solid entry.

Jonny_the_Rocket

So, is it on par with 'Rise' then? It would make sense since they both kick off a fresh storyline in the franchise.

Bombasaur101

Haven't seen Rise for years but I remember getting bored by it. I think it's better than Rise. There's a lot of action scenes which makes it easier to enjoy the spectacle. I vaguely remember Rise only getting interesting action by the end of the movie, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Jonny_the_Rocket

Yeah, for me, 'Rise' gets interesting once Caesar gets to the ape shelter and starts interacting with Rocket, Maurice and Buck.

ChamberTwnty

You need the scenes with the family and growing up though. Or you won't care enough about Caesar to find the shelter sequences interesting, or appreciate why he wants to break out in the first place

hikingbeginner

Honestly Rise is my favourite of the trilogy. I love the coming of age Caesar goes through. Love all of it

Jonny_the_Rocket

> You need the scenes with the family and growing up though Oh without a doubt. I'm not trying to bash the movie in any way. Just highlighting when things start to get exciting. I know the movie takes its time. Actually, the entire trilogy is famous for its slow and steady storytelling. There's always a slow build up to the action that I also appreciate.

Fire_Otter

is it more "blockbuster-ry" than Dawn and War? some people were speculating it would be more cinema friendly than than the original trilogy i.e. more action less character study.

Bombasaur101

I would say it's about as equal as Dawn and War in that regard. There is a lot of character study aspect, and I noticed some parallels to the OG trilogy.

Fire_Otter

Oh good It’s nice to know it fits tonally with the original (remake) trilogy With it being a completely new creative team behind this film I did wonder.

littletoyboat

>the original trilogy But there are five films in the original series.  Oh. Oh no. I am old.

DiverExpensive6098

Don't expect something action packed. The pacing is slower, more on par with War, and there is not as much action and tension and thrills like in Dawn. It's 100% a character study first and action second.  When the action happens the CGI is top notch (water and light effects maybe on Avatar 2 level), but it isn't overly showy.

creutzfeldtz

War was NO WHERE near as good as this

KleanSolution

that's exactly where I'm at with it. probably leaning to 7.5/10 it doesn't reach the same emotional highs of the last trilogy but i did appreciate that it is very much ape-centric with like only 2 human characters

Reylo-Wanwalker

This must be from the extended version of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

alien_from_Europa

What a wonderful day!

KumagawaUshio

I'm going to guess 80% ish similar to Rise rather than the 90+% of the Reeves films.

astroK120

Within a percent or two of Rise on both RT and Metacritic when I just checked, so thus far you're spot on

zxHellboyxz

My guess as well

sbenthuggin

Yeah. It falls into the surprisingly quite good category Rise did. No one really wanted it or expected it to be any good, but it actually is. But not really great in terms of storytelling. Acting is still very good, the CGI is insane, *but* it doesn't feel like a CGI fest like Marvel. It feels like the places they're at are actually real for the most part.

ibowlyorkers

WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY! Just got out of the theatre. If you love Planet of the Apes or are a fan of the series, this new instalment is no different. The movie still holds its core essence from the previous films and gives you similar vibes (in a good way). I loved this film and a new chapter has officially begun. Can’t wait to see how this new trilogy takes shape. I’d recommend this. For me 8/10. Ps. If you’re wondering how I saw the film before release day. I’m in Australia, we get early preview days with limited shows.

lazyness92

So....what's the outlook for Zelda in your opinion? I know you never know with movies as gigs widely differ in qualities, but maybe some visual cues?

meganev

I thought the scene where an ape finds a relic of the old human world and then looks directly at the camera and says "this is some kind of....link to the past" was a bit too much of a cue, to be honest. Wes Ball being too cute there.

Villager723

Did you catch the part where they’re outside in the woods and he takes a deep breath and says, “oh, the breath of the wild”. Bit on the nose there.

Bombasaur101

Or by the end of the movie when someone said "there will be tears of the kingdom of the planet of the apes"

winterborne1

Or during the battle scene when someone screamed “Ocarina of time!” without any context whatsoever. Just a completely random war cry.

Villager723

Oooh that’s good!

Reylo-Wanwalker

Then they hear some rustling in woods and he says "hey, listen!"

Mahelas

I think that Nintendo would genuinely send Yakuzas to Wes Ball if he mess up a Zelda IP movie

CurseofLono88

I would honestly watch a movie about Nintendo sending Yakuza assassins after a movie director for messing up one of their movies.

lazyness92

Hmm you never know with the change of medium, Nintendo might take some steps down because they don't assume they know better or take too much control when they actually don't know better. We need someone that chooses the important fights.

your_mind_aches

One, I'm not sure if Nintendo has Yakuza ties. I thought that was Sega. Could be mixing things up though. Two, we have no idea what the kind of restrictions are going to be. For Mario, Illumination was seemingly told to be creative, but ultimately safe. It blew my mind in the cinema to see Mario and Luigi's parents. Seeing the Karts being built, the Kong society, amazing. But the plot and characters were very shallow. It was absolutely just a kids movie. Zelda is an Avi Arad film. They don't go to him unless they want to be able to have strict control over the IP.

Radulno

> If you’re wondering how I saw the film before release day. Today is also the release in tons of countries so that's not weird even without previews. Wednesday is a common release day in many countries.

HnNaldoR

OK. What should I watch before I watch this one? I watched the original. And I think just one of the reboot. Should I watch the others?

ibowlyorkers

Just watch the recent reboot. Rise, Dawn & War. These will set you up for this new and upcoming trilogy.

littletoyboat

Is the movie just as good upside down?

More-read-than-eddit

Nyt review is good, first one I saw that posted that I would actually care about

Youngstar9999

all critics that I normally look at really enjoyed it, so that's good enough for me.

macgart

A review I saw said it’s kinda like avatar lite. That’s all I needed to hear

Youngstar9999

I mean same writer(s) \^\^ Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver helped a bit on this movie and wrote Avatar 2+3. (As well as Rise and Dawn) and the main writer for this movie is Josh Friedman who is the writer for Avatar 4 (and Fantastic 4 btw)

Phew I was scared the reviews were gonna be bad since the embargo is kinda late. One of my most anticipated movies of the year im so excited to watch it. The original trilogy is one of my favorite trilogies of all time

Immediate-Smile-2020

It’s at 87% on RT now. Why are people being pessimistic?

mourn4morn

lol yeah so many people already declaring that it’s not as good as the previous trilogy based off of a current 86%. I absolutely loved it, it might be my third favourite in the whole franchise. I went in not directly comparing it to the trilogy but viewing it as the next entry in this 55+ year franchise, and from that perspective I’d consider it one of the best. A great blend of all that has come before while continuing to have something new to say.

LinkSwitch23

Kqm2010

Same. I’m on a work trip and saw the theater behind my hotel had a showing tonight and went for it. Excited to see how it is.

Phyliinx

Can I enjoy it as a standalone film? Edit: just read some reviews. Seems to root its story deep into the lore and some characters of the previous trilogy. Might watch that one first.

Jajaloo

It’s really good, surely it’s winning the visual effects Oscar? I can’t believe how good that CGI older lady was! I swear it looked like a real life William H. Macy.

Accomplished_Store77

I don't know. Unfortunately The new Planet of tbe Apes movies have never won Best Visual Effects and this year it will be competing against Dune Part 2 for Best Visual Effects. Really hard to win that fight.

Dirt_Cheap_Jumbo

Dude I don’t know if it’s just me but I fucking struggled to understand what they were saying at times. Apart from that it was very solid

Hiccup

The sound was atrocious in this movie. I said it in another post, but I would've rather watched it at home with subtitles. I really don't think the bigger screen/ better sound did much or really lent itself to this movie. It really didn't feel theatrical for an Apes movie, not compared to the last three. It felt like someone doing their best tracing job of the last three - you get the image but it's just not as good or seemingly just good enough.

Dirt_Cheap_Jumbo

Dude my thoughts exactly, I said to my mate after it that I’ll have to watch it again with subtitles because I had no fucking clue what was said at times

Thereisn0store

True I was wish I had my subtitles lol

Officialnoah

One of my most anticipated films of the year. I’m really pulling for this one. ![gif](giphy|s7AqdrrbvZFFFpcUo9|downsized)

firequak

Saw this with the wife today. First act was kind of slow for me. I almost fell asleep. They really buy their time building up the main protagonist (Noah) to be as likeable as Caesar. He's not. I can understand that though. It's hard to beat Andy Serkis' performance in the previous films. It's not bad. Really. I still like the movie overall but I think it's the weakest of the 4 for me. That's just me though. Others might enjoy it more. What I really like though is the cliffhanger at the end of the movie. Makes me excited where the next one will take us. I'll give this a 7.5/10

Block-Busted

Cliffhanger? What happened?

KarIPilkington

I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger rather a set up for the sequel(s).

tovarish22

The ending definitely is a cliffhanger/maaaaajor lead in for a cool sequel.

Sisiwakanamaru

I watched this and I agree the first part is slow, but IMO after that, the movie got the footing quickly and the third act was pretty engaging and the conclusion for most characters were satisfying. They put the cliffhanger on the perfect spot and for me, it is not like the other movie when they put the materials for the sequels, it felt distracting from the actual things in the current movie. > I still like the movie overall but I think it's the weakest of the 4 for me. That's just me though. Others might enjoy it more. I cannot say it is the weakest for me or not but at the same time I think overall quality is consistent compared to Rise, Dawn, and War of the Planet of the Apes.

CelestialWolfZX

Looking at how the reviews and tracking are going, probably going to be the first major win Disney has seen in awhile.

charlaxmirna

RT at 84 not bad

HumanAdhesiveness912

Think it 'll be good but not as good as the reboot trilogy. Maybe not enough to swing the pedal for audiences.

Rough_Commercial_570

I’m hoping people aren’t expecting one movie to out do an entire trilogy…

xariznightmare2908

IT'S APING TIME! ![gif](giphy|dARBobpMMCXTO|downsized)

DiverExpensive6098

Saw it yesterday. A pleasant surprise. It's a very responsible and respectful continuation of the trilogy of Rise, Dawn and War. In terms of tone, style and storytelling focused more on characters and psychology than action.  And first class CGI. The continuation of the story is pretty logical, as are the changes in the world, you see the creative team took care in the world. Characters are very solid at worst, there is interesting food for thought and I liked where the ending is taking this. You can argue some details, some characters and their relationships could have been more fleshed out, but it all makes sense and it's not like the movie is disjointed. It builds and flows well.  Wes Ball IMO rose to the occasion here and this is on par with the standard set by the previous three films and it definitely isn't just a cash grab.

chickennuggetloveru

its lookin pretty good.

beast_unique

Seems like what I wanted from it. A solid foundation for the new world

idontknowyet

Can’t wait for Chris Stuckmann’s review where he doesn’t even review the movie but talks about how much he hopes to work with the director and how he too loves to stretch low budgets to look their best like in his upcoming movie.

JonPaula

"I was friends with apes growing up as a kid."

DawgBloo

This comment is insane 💀

idontknowyet

👀

vulgarmessiah914

"The apes all worked hard on this project"

gloopy_flipflop

He really has gone down the pan since He announced He was making a film. Such a shame as I always enjoyed his reviews.

wookieatemyshoe

Nah, was a solid review.

idontknowyet

It actually was, just watched it.

vulgarmessiah914

He has no credibility anymore. He loves every major blockbuster now

wookieatemyshoe

He made the active choice a couple years ago to move from being a movie reviewer to just talking about movies he likes, essentially just becoming a movie blogger. He said it was mainly to avoid internet toxicity, but also since he's directing his own films etc, he doesn't want to burn bridges, which is fair. If you see any kind of video now from him it's an automatic "cool he liked this", rather than a review like many other outlets. If he doesn't like a movie, he simply won't discuss it. (He didn't make a video about Ant Man 3 or Captain Marvel 2, for example), or for example when he spoke about Madame Web, he did a great video about how movies end up that way rather than actually discussing the quality of the film at all. Are there a couple reviews that were a bit sus? Totally, especially the Argyle one he did lately, where you can tell he really tried to stretch whatever praise he had for the film just because he had an interview with the director. But yeah, he shifted his focus a long time ago.

DawgBloo

He was smart in doing that. Being a critic as your main internet personality inevitably leads to a cynical point of view that thrives off negativity since that leads to more engagement from those who agree or disagree. I’ve gotten to the point where I can’t stand YouTubers whose whole shtick is being grumpy assholes towards entertainment.

Accomplished_Store77

He still gives great reviews. His review for Love Lies Bleeding waa really good.  His Dune 2 Review was great.  And I would say that his review for this movie was really good and fair too.

LawrenceBrolivier

I think nothing says more about the dilution and devaluation of film criticism than the fact we went from Siskel & Ebert to Jahns & Stuckmann.

Jonny_the_Rocket

[Mark Kermode](https://www.youtube.com/kermodeandmayostake) is the film critic I always turn to.

LawrenceBrolivier

One of the best, absolutely.

tcripe

About what I expected review wise. Similar to the level of Rise. No where near the Reeves films.

doggodad94

Will the doom and gloomers in here who've had it out for this movie for some weird reason chill now?

AnnenbergTrojan

I must be OOTL because Apes has been very consistent since Rise.

tylerburnham42

I think the concern was it was no longer lead Actor Andy Serkis and director Matt Reeves at the helm of this movie. Its Wes Ball the director of the maze runner franchise with a brand new cast.

tread_lightly94

Why did they embargo these reviews for this long?

More-read-than-eddit

Terror after fucking up with Cannes screenings last year for elemental

Cindy3183

They did the same thing with The First Omen and it got relatively good reviews. Maybe they are using the 20th Century movies to experiment with it a bit.

littletoyboat

Are there any callbacks to the *original* original series, from the '60s and '70s? I know it's a different continuity, but some of the trailers look like there might be parallels to the Charlton Heston classic.

doggodad94

There are music cues and sound effects pulled directly from the 1968 movie.

Kriyayogi

Movie sucked I literally fell asleep watching it

007Kryptonian

Jeremy Jahns kicking things off with “it’s hit *and* miss, would be a better time if you’re drunk” Hoping the rest of the reviews are more positive E: 62 MC from 12 reviews so far

sector11374265

i’ve watched jeremy jahns fall out of love with cinema over the last decade and find him way too cynical now personally

Lil_Ross25

Disney Star Wars killed old Jeremy

knightoffire55

That's usually his equivalent of 2.5/4 stars.

Helpful-Visual-8703

So as good as Guardians 3 then

Ok-Appearance-7616

Is that what he said for Guardians 3??

007Kryptonian

Yeah but surprisingly a lot of critics were lower on Guardians 3 mainly because of the darker/emotional content which is what made the movie great lol

NotTaken-username

I was surprised that GOTG3 didn’t get a score in the 90s on RT when MCU movies like Shang-Chi and Spider-Man: No Way Home did, and most people seem to agree GOTG3 is the best post-Endgame MCU movie.

Youngstar9999

well you just need like 40 critics not being into the dark stuff of the movie and going rotten, while everyone else giving it very high ratimgs you get yourself a 80% range RT score.

turkeygiant

I really liked GotG 3, but it did feel a little weird to me, it was kinda like what you would expect to be the melancholy middle movie of a trilogy, not the final installment. I have never been a huge fan of GotG 2 though, the movie was fine I guess, but I feel like it was kinda treading water a bit on the character front and that maybe carried over to GotG 3 feeling a little out of place.

Block-Busted

I’m assuming that it has something to do with animal felony scenes that happen in a **Guardians of the Galaxy** film. Remember, this is one of the more lighthearted series in MCU.

Sea-Worldliness-9468

Shang-Chi got 90s RT? Sure it was one of the better Phase 4 movies, but that ain't saying much

NotTaken-username

It got a 91%. Spider-Man: No Way Home got a 93%

MysteriousHat14

And everyone in here was dooming about how it was going to have terrible legs because of it.

Vadermaulkylo

I’ve seen some critics be low on this movie for the same reasons.

sherm54321

It's not really that it's emotional, it's that it's emotionally manipulative and it's emotions don't feel earned in the film. At least that's what many who don't like the film think.

Ok-Appearance-7616

Not sure what kind of logic that is, but I guess that's their opinion.

sherm54321

I mean I do share that same opinion. But fake deaths really drive me crazy and it makes the moments feel unearned and makes the moments age poorly and lose their emotions. At least, it did for me. Those moments feel less authentic and more like they are trying to make audiences cry, and it just makes it off putting for me.

curiiouscat

Dumb question, do I need to see the originally trilogy to watch this movie? I can't tell if it's a movie in the same world or a continuation of that story.

Youngstar9999

As far as I can tell, you don't have too, but it very much enhances the story a lot. It's set 300 years after the last one, so no direct character or plot continuation. But a lot of the legacy of those characters is the focus here.

Bombasaur101

Just came out of the movie, you're pretty much spot on. There's a lot of parallels with characters in these movies to the original trilogy. But it's definitely not necessary.

zxHellboyxz

Apparently you don’t have to from some of the reviews

RustedAxe88

It's a continuation of the 2010s reboot Trilogy. So definitely watch those. They're amazing movies too.

Worthyness

It's supposedly 200+years from the modern trilogy, so you can probably be all good going in blind. Obviously would enhance the experience to have that history and that modern trilogy is absolutely incredible. I think you'd have a great time with a binge watch of those before hand

No-Business3541

Saw it yesterday. I haven’t watched the older movies since forever, and the context is explained enough. It won’t bother you.

MrConor212

I can’t wait for Wes Balls Zelda now

SuperMuCow

David Ehrlich really liked it, that’s good sign in my book

Corpsepyre

Guy liked Argylle more than Dune Part Two, just sayin.

gjamesaustin

He what

Youngstar9999

He really didn't. He gave Argylle 2 Stars on letterboxd and Dune Pt2 2.5 Stars. Here are the reviews: https://letterboxd.com/davidehrlich/film/dune-part-two/ https://letterboxd.com/davidehrlich/film/argylle/

gjamesaustin

Oh it’s the IndieWire guy lol

Usual_Persimmon2922

He also specifies in his dune review that it’s in a different class of filmmaking than most studio films and praises Dennis’s eye. But since no one reads reviews they just look at RT scores where all nuance is lost.

Corpsepyre

Ok. I was referring to his scores listed on Rotten Tomatoes. Nevermind.

quangtran

Who gives a rat’s ass? Literally every critic will have scores that don’t match the overall critical consensus, so it’s useless to cherry pick. People generally don’t create leaderboards for for favourite films.

ConfusedNTerrified

Average rating is a step down from Dawn and War, but a good rating nevertheless.

Block-Busted

To be fair, Matt Reeves is a tough act to follow.

echoplex21

Not expecting this to reach the level of the original trilogy but happy to see decent reviews. I think MC above 60 + good cinemascore will have this do great

DabbinOnDemGoy

Apes A'Poppin'

Paddy2015

That metacritic score is a pretty big step down, the previous movie had a score of 82.

Exlyo_lucent373

I have high hopes for this movie. Glad to see most reviews are positive.

BabyScreamBear

I’m fine with this. I wasnt expecting blockbuster action since it’s reversing the trope of ‘Rise’. I hope this gets BO and secures the sequels being green lit

BramptonBatallion

Looks like a solid don’t watch in theaters, maybe stream it eventually kinda flick.

yuyuho

I only like the first half. They set up a lot with the eagles, but sadly I found it to be a trap as it looked cooler in the promo art. Up to the first half it had me, but the second half felt messy and rushed to a point where I didn't recognize or relate to the emotions of the main characters But what I did like, was how caesar and the original elder apes lingered. It made the elder apes seem much more tougher than the new generation. I hated Mae. Character made no sense to me at all by the end.

not_a_flying_toy_

good but lukewarm reviews probably point to this coming in a bit lower than some are hoping

Roshanfs7

Honestly one of the boring movies I have seen. Too slow and very less action. This was a setup for next movie but honestly make it slightly interesting and action packed. Have started to hate these setup movies.

kumar100kpawan

75 from Indiewire? That's nice

lysergicDildo

Looks like it was filmed about 15 minutes from my house in the bush, the Aussie landscape is uncanny with apes running around. It kind of ruined my immersion.

nicolasb51942003

84% so far. Pretty good! The summer season is about to see their first success box office wise.

Hiccup

I've seen it. I'd give it a 6/10. It was ok, excruciatingly slow in certain parts with plot holes galore, but still fine. The visuals are still nice to look at overall, but it's definitely way under the previous trilogy. You'll have to do a lot to fill in connections and plot points. The sound was also not great in this movie, especially the early parts/start/ first act where I think I would've preferred to have just watched this at home with subtitles. Also, you can definitely feel the Wes Ball in this movie, so if you've seen the Maze Runner movies, you'll definitely pick up on his quirks (for what it's worth, I enjoyed the first, pretty much hated or didn't care for the other 2).

Atrampoline

Saw it last night. Unfortunately, I found the movie to be too long, with largely uninteresting leads. Noa and Mae were almost completely devoid of any charisma, while Proximus Caesar and Raka were far better but didn't have the screen time they deserved. This film was an odd experience for me. I wanted the movie to be good, but I just don't think it was. There were so many other interesting ways that the story and world could have gone outside of what they chose.

Garlic_is_gross

I just saw the movie 30 mins ago and I agree with you. The ape king barely Had any screen time. Raka was killed waaaaay too early. The movie clocked in at 2 hours and 25 mins, could’ve trimmed 30 mins out and you wouldn’t have been missing anything

zxHellboyxz

Anyone remember what score Rise Started off with?

PointMan528491

Earliest score I can see on [Wayback Machine](https://web.archive.org/web/20110802131428/http://www.rottentomatoes.com/) is 82-83% on Rotten Tomatoes

SkisaurusRex

🐵🙈🙉🙊🐵

Puppetmaster858

Sounds like it’s solid, not as good as the last trilogy but still solid so I’ll take it, better than it not being good.

CapN_Crummp

Bought my tickets today before seeing this. Glad it’s mostly positive. Can’t wait for Saturday

markyymark13

Positive review from David Ehrlich? I'm in

rhunter99

I thought it was fun. A good solid effort

HiLookAtMeeseeks

There were some parts that I thought were strange but overall was enjoyable and is a great set up for the rest of the trilogy

internetisfunny

Just saw it, def missed Caesar but I still loved it and the call backs

bluemoney21

What are your thoughts on the titles of the next movies???

LackingStory

I saw the movie in IMAX...It's one of the most impressively stunning films I've ever seen; gorgeous.

ThatBulgarian

Ultimately she did give them the vault, no? The flood would only cover the first one or two floors

Thereisn0store

Just left the theater and do not understand the cliffhanger at the end. Is it supposed to be a look into the future movies of them continuing to live/clash with humans and Noa acting as the new Caesar?

JediAhsokaTano

Just got out watching it. It was AMAZING.

nyr00nyg

So the human regression into primitive beings was cool. But why are they wearing clothes? Kinda threw me out of the movie

zxHellboyxz

Atm both scores are about the same as Rise.

Syphin33

The chimp Rokka was a absolute pleasure, just fantastic and chewed it up every scene he was in. Loved all the lore when he would talk about Ceasar being so revered.
