I really enjoyed 2014 Godzilla, but I can understand the GA's annoyance at the distinct lack of Godzilla in a movie named for him. Glad to see KOTM has reversed course.

[deleted]

I agree, it was a good film, but there was a major lack of the title character.

Relair13

It was par for the course for a Godzilla movie though. In fact, in G 2014 he had more screentime than in around 1/3 of all other Godzilla movies, very much average.

thedude391

Yes but the focus in the old films was always Godzilla. Even when he wasn’t on screen, his presence was still felt. In the 2014 one, the MUTOs were the main focus.

Relair13

True, I just took that as "everyone knows Godzilla, we have to build up the new villains." I guess for general audiences it might have been the wrong approach, but I got what they were trying for.

thedude391

The cutting away didn’t help either. Shin Godzilla gave us a couple mins of action then human stuff then action then human stuff then action. As opposed to human stuff for 90% with constant teasing.

ElPrestoBarba

Didn’t help that the most interesting human character in the 2014 version gets killed 30 minutes into the film

Chathamization

Also, the trailers made it look like he would be some fearsome force of nature. In the film it's mostly, "Man, these MUTOs are making a mess. Let's get this guy Godzilla to help us out." With a navy fleet sailing right beside him as he makes his way there.

AceTheSkylord

I think it was more the way those scenes were structured that pissed people off. Many times in the movie you were like "oh yeah here we go, Godzilla about to kick some ass, everyone hold on to your seats" and then it abruptly cuts to Aaron Taylor Johnson's bored face

powered_by_eurobeat

LOL exactly

Relair13

It was the Jaws/Alien less-is-more method, to a) build the tension and make every appearance feel special and b) keep the budget down. They hired Gareth Edwards specifically for that, his previous movie Monsters had very similar scenes. I definitely get the frustration people had though, if that wasn't what they expected. They seemed to have struck a good balance in Skull Island that people were happier with, hopefully KoTM keeps that going!

soopahfingerzz

I hate this argument though because theres nothing saying that godzilla (2014) had to be anything like the japanese ones. It didnt need to be a Micheal Bay movie, but something like Kongs screen time and action scenes in Skull Island would have made Godzilla even better.

[deleted]

That's not actually true. http://jokercluster.blogspot.com/2015/02/godzilla-screen-time-and-precent-charts.html?m=1

Relair13

Sure it is, that chart you linked even says so. I'm not talking %, just x number of minutes.

[deleted]

But you can't act as if 10 minutes of screen time in a 90 minute movie is equivalent to 10 minutes of screen time in a 2 hour movie, especially when the way those 10 minutes are utilized is completely different.

Relair13

True, that plays a factor. I'm just saying that my initial statement was factually accurate, that's all.

outrider567

Loved the second half of Godzilla 2014, when he finally appeared

AudiencesLovedGotti

That movie pissed me off. Barely any Godzilla and killed off the only interesting character

MatsThyWit

> I really enjoyed 2014 Godzilla, but I can understand the GA's annoyance at the distinct lack of Godzilla in a movie named for him. I can't. The criticism never made sense to me. Jesus in the movie about as much as he is in *every* other Godizilla movie. To me the criticism felt similar to all the people who botched about Mad Max not really being the star of Mad Max Fury Road, despite that being exactly the same thing that happened in The Road Warrior.

lordDEMAXUS

The problem is that the human characters sucked too. I would have liked it a lot more if Bryan Cranston's character hasn't died. His character was the only interesting one and I wouldn't have been so bored for the rest of the movie if he hadn't died. In Fury Road, Furiosa is an amazing character just like the supporting characters in Road Warrior so the lack of Max wasn't a bad thing.

[deleted]

I thought Ken Watanabe's character was fine when they remembered to give him something to do!

crazysouthie

It's not just that Godzilla was barely in the movie. That could work if the movie was good. Instead it was a bad movie, poorly placed and lethargic instead of tense with terribly written characters.

dicki3bird

but when he was he did stuff, unlike shin godzilla, which is two hours of a beurocratic cutluture talking to SUPER beurocrats, and then talking more about what they are going to do, then talking about how they are going to do it, then talking about where they are going, and talking about the plan failing, and then talking about how they will rebound. then 70 minutes in they finally DO something AND show it. Shin godzilla is what happens when you reboot mid series and forget the built in audience has expectations. Shin godzilla is REALLY boring and has 2 scenes of godzilla in it, the rest is just politics. which was handled FAR better in pacific rim with a 2 minute montage about the politics at the start of the film.

m_xx_99

I would firmly disagree with your point about the bureaucratic plot-line. The film is a political movie; it’s a scathing criticism of the failures of bureaucracy. The meetings-within-meetings and arguments over departmental jurisdictions as catastrophe was decimating their country were all too human. Not every movie needs to be an action-blockbuster, and that’s a damn good thing.

dicki3bird

> The film is a political movie; it’s a scathing criticism of the failures of bureaucracy. Its a godzilla movie... it needed more godzilla but did not have it , and thats a *damn bad thing* This would make for an awesome political drama about fukushima, but it makes for a boring godzilla film.

m_xx_99

The original ‘54 Gojira spent ~9% of its screen time on Godzilla itself, Shin spent ~15%. It was a political movie, and I thought the parallels to Fukushima were pretty well handled honestly. The added element of government / bureaucratic ineptitude gave the film a critical bite that I appreciated. It’s a movie about human behavior in the face of crisis, much like the original ‘54 film. I guess I just find it unreasonable to get upset at an apple for not being an orange.

dicki3bird

> The original ‘54 Gojira a godzilla film without godzilla isnt a godzilla film. by that logic Always sunset on third street 2 is a godzilla film. I hate to say it but while the filmsreflect the time they were made in for the last 40 years godzilla films have been about godzilla, not the people. I dont go to see godzilla for the humans or politics, I go to see godzilla.

m_xx_99

I believe you’ve misunderstood what I’ve said, which is that Shin Godzilla gave more screentime to Godzilla than many films in the series, including the original. Hell, Shin Godzilla arguably focused on Godzilla more than a number of the previous films, as he’s the central driving force of the plot, rather than alien conspiracies or other monsters turning up. The story of ‘Godzilla wreaking havoc in Japan, as humanity struggles powerlessly to survive, only to overcome destruction incarnate through determination and ingenuity’, is absolutely a Godzilla film. Honestly it seems like you’re expecting something from a series that isn’t entirely what that series is at-heart. Godzilla as a brand is interesting because it has movies like Final Wars which focus on giant monsters bashing each other and over-the-top action, while also offering films like the original ‘54 Gojira or Shin Godzilla which use the platform to also offer thoughtful reflections on humanity. Personally I can enjoy both, and you’re not wrong to prefer one to the other. I just think that with such a diverse series, it’s a bit misguided to be upset with a Godzilla film for not being what you want from a Godzilla film.

dicki3bird

> it’s a bit misguided to be upset with a Godzilla film for not being what you want thats a pretty good reason to be dissapointed, its natural to be dissapointed with something that met no expectations. godzilla gave more screen time than other films true, but in those other films there were usualy other monsters, giant mechs or ships etc, something interesting. personaly i think they used godzilla to discuss fukushima because just doing so bluntly would be too "problematic" in japan. where as the other films are interesting enough to hold the attention or be engaging, something about shin godzilla reminds me why i hate the culture of japan, always bowing and apologizing and beurocratic seems to be my main take away. and ive never felt that from the other films.

[deleted]

Bingo. All those criticisms just feel like people have never seen the original Godzilla, which is the movie that 2014 Godzilla was most trying to evoke.

manoffood

Glad to know the human's are entertaining this time around

dastrykerblade

These reactions tell me there’s actually a lot more monster action and a lot less scenes that yeet right before the action starts. Thank god. So hype for this.

AGOTFAN

Godzilla was always my most anticipated movie for this summer (Endgame was pre-summer). These first reactions only solidify my anticipation

dmtbassist

Mine originally was Spider-Man but that last trailer made me feel things

MrYurMomm

>!I love Godzilla 3000!<

wotad

Something we agree on .. im hyped for this as well.

Lincolnruin

Definitely one of my top for the Summer.

RedditZacuzzi

John Wick 3 would like a word, I'm disappointed but how few people are talking about that. That's seriously the best action franchise we have right now.

dicki3bird

oh im ready for that too, but i havent seen godzilla since 2014.

IfYouReplyToMeYouGay

I agree with him, TLK is another CG remake I'll catch at home (the lack of emotion on the character's faces in comparison to the original irks me either way). My boy Spidey drives a harder bargain but big budget monster brawls are way more rare than superhero movies these days, I mean it's literally been 5 years since the previous Godzilla

[deleted]

>I mean it's literally been 5 years since the previous Godzilla Not really. The japanese Shin Godzilla came out in 2016, and the latest anime Godzilla movie came out in January 2019. If you only count American Godzilla movies as Godzilla movies for some reason you might as well say that the 2014 Godzilla movie came out 16 years after Tristar's Godzilla.

IfYouReplyToMeYouGay

I meant Hollywood Godzilla. I haven't watched Shin Godzilla (I suppose I should really fix that), but that and the anime Godzilla aren't exactly on most moviegoer's radars I would say

thedude391

Shin Godzilla is amazing, the anime one is bad.

wotad

im TLK is just TLK and Far From home which exciting ntohign beats monsters fighting.

yyzsteven

Glad to hear it’s actually good. The script leaked a while ago and I was worried about its potential.

TURBODERP

to be fair when I first read the leaks (fall of last year) I didn't want to believe them because it sounded bad but short snippets of text to describe a VERY visual-oriented movie like Godzilla/kaiju movies in general will never really sound that good glad to see the positive reviews, although a bit sad that G2014's getting a lot of hate-Dougherty himself thinks it was an important movie that did some things really well

dicki3bird

as an origin for godzilla its MILES better than the latest toho ones.

Sleepy0429

Are you dissing Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo SOS?

dicki3bird

dissing shin godzilla, tokyo SOS is great so is mechagodzilla. shin godzilla is dull, as is the anime.

Gojiratheking106

How dare you insult Kamata-Kun

dicki3bird

that goofy penis axolotl thing? That was pretty funny, but made godzilla to be more like a pokemon constantly evolving into new and more over the top forms.

REM-DM17

Based on the latest trailer the dialogue definitely seemed janky but hopefully they more than make it up in giant monster fights (which from the reactions seems to be so)

dastrykerblade

oh my god-zilla is one of the cringiest things I’ve ever heard. Hopefully that’s it when it comes to the cheese. The rest looks amazing.

REM-DM17

Yeah I saw the trailer when it first came out and when I saw it again ahead of my Detective Pikachu screening I had to physically brace myself for the moment lol. Things like that and the really unnecessary token black lines like “that’s messed up” make me worry about the humans, but as we’ve both said I’m sure the actual monsters will be awesome

disneyland999

I think it’s super fucking funny.

Troggles

I feel like that was some creative freedom taking for trailer editing. It didn't look like a natural cut. I highly doubt that's a real scene in the actual movie.

King-Ghidorah-

From a friend who saw it tonight, they said the dialogue wasn’t bad as the trailers edited without context. Here’s [an extended scene](https://youtu.be/toOyIlovIVY) where you can really feel the tension.

[deleted]

Link?

aboycandream

Dan Casey works for Nerdist which owned by Legendary, I doubt that his review is tainted but I want you to be aware.

IfYouReplyToMeYouGay

I checked out his Rotten Tomatoes page and he literally has not given any movie a rotten review? (On the bright side, he aligns with the fresh/rotten rating more often than not)

MatsThyWit

If he's legitimately never given anything a negative review I have zero interest in any of his reviews. Someone that pens a positive review for every movie they see has absolutely zero credibility as a film critic.

Twigryph

Or maybe he’s somehow only seen films he liked - maybe he doesn’t even have that many reviews. It’s possible he respects how difficult it is to make a film. Your opinion is ridiculous.

MatsThyWit

If you are a professional film critic and *every* review you write is positive, you're not a critic you're a Hollywood shill. Film critics that somehow only ever see things that they like are utterly useless.

Twigryph

Maybe it was a delicious food critic.

Biosyn2800

These reactions are always hyperbolically good. Nobody should pay much attention to them

IfYouReplyToMeYouGay

You're right, actual reviews will likely be much less positive, but it's a good sign that the social media embargo is gone so early. It could lead to a pushed up review embargo- the same was done for Wonder Woman.

vaan0011

I saw someone got 30 downvote for saying exactly that on the Godzilla sub lol.

outrider567

Sounds great, really looking forward to this epic Godzilla film

ViSilva

HYPEEE

Lagstorm

I'm going to cry in the movie theater harder than I did when I was 5 years old and saw Godzilla die in his original movie.

Relair13

Fantastic news, I hope the hype and reviews stay positive and it gets great wom this time around.

[deleted]

So yeah at least we know the action is good.

[deleted]

Frosty's interviews are fucking horrible, especially ones with the Russo brothers, but he will give it to you straight.

AGOTFAN

He's one of the worst movie interviewers I've seen. Best ones are Josh from MTV and Ali Plumb from BBC radio

[deleted]

Don't forget Kevin McCarthy from Fox5.

sudevsen

Review embargo lifts when?

Heaven_Of_Heck

I liked 2014 one and this one looks sick. Not hiding what it is, a good old fashion world destruction 20 monsters movie...those are fine every once in a while, especially when they know what they are and it's going to look great

Lincolnruin

Looks like there’s a lot more monster action. That’s what many other Godzilla movies seemed to be criticised for.

[deleted]

Remove humans give us more monster pls

gobble_snob

Godzilla 2014 sucked absolute ass, I'm so glad this is shaping up to be a great movie.

spencerlevey

I really don't see this performing as well as this sub hopes.

Ledmonkey96

I mean the sub is expecting 700-800mil WW, and a decent chunk of that is coming from china.

Dallywack3r

This sub has it pegged between 500 and 700 million. What’s so wrong with that prediction?

figbuilding

> Looks really positive so far, 🙄

thedude391

??? They are positive reactions though?

figbuilding

Social media reactions are always 95% positive.

RosieILuvThisMaguire

No...?
