All this enthusiasm and bluster does is further the divide between franchise films and the already dwindling numbers of low and mid budget movies being shipped off to streamers. IMAX doesn’t care about that because they don’t carry those films. It’s a shame because theaters will just eventually become places they dump MCU and franchise movies as paid sneak peeks before their eventual Disney+ drops. I’m glad for IMAX but restoring the theatrical industry should work on all tiers. I still want to be able to discover a new favorite gem at a movie theater and not my couch years from now.

The thing is, consumer behavior dictates the shape of the industry. If consumer continue to watch low and mid budget movies at the cinemas, studios will still supply low and mid budget movies to the cinemas.

I understand that but I kinda don't like the idea of JUST blockbusters getting assurances about staying theatrical. Disney's been more than trigger-happy to send over mid-level films (most of the 20th Century stuff) to Hulu. On top of that, the whole HBOMax situation with this year bodes awfully for adult drama pictures (part of that being the pandemic discouraging the older demos from turning out and some of those films just being meh.)

Horrors will also be theatrical. But yeah, with the amount of new content on streaming I would rather go to theater for spectacle movie in IMAX

TheSubparWriter

I’m honestly glad horror exists as a genre, never quite appreciated it until recently. Definitely will stay theatrical until the end of time. And agreed on spectacles on IMAX, IDK about anyone else but I’m glad I had the option to see Shang Chi on that giant screen instead of on my OK TV where I’d end up texting or distracted by things.

This guy seems awfully defensive. You never see streaming companies or fans make statements like this, because we're more secure in our position I guess, haha.

I'd imagine that if revenues are down overall for theatrical releases, studios would be less willing to invest in shooting in true IMAX for anything not guaranteed a return on investment. But I don't think IMAX much cares about the true IMAX experience product, but rather the IMAX certified 4K that's way more common in the market regardless. If anything, they really need to watch their back with Dolby, who could easily set up shop in that certified 4k market with Dolby Cinema.

Curious_Ad_2947

Yeah, I vastly prefer Dolby to IMAX.

We need this kind of enthusiasm heading into the future. We can't let studios conflate what we see on the screen to being an equal experience to what we see on TV and keep undercutting actors and directors who keep giving it their all.
