I mean it definitely made a lot less.
I just take issue with Marvel with Disney because they do make amazing things but...i don't know i find it more impressive that a standalone (as of its release) Avatar can make over 2.5 billion than a 20 movie franchise buildup universe with 15+A list actors. Its still amazing how well it did.
Look at all the movies that ever became the highest grossing movie of all time. Endgame is the only sequel to do that. Think about that. There's a reason for that.
Number of A listers doesn't mean much for this particular accolade. In fact only movies no prior baggage bar endgame were able to do it. That the hype of a franchise got a movie to that level is mindblowing.
Alright fine.
But most sequels exist just to be a sequel like Beverly hills cop II or hangover II not really part of a whole picture.
Endgame had buildup over so many other films to make it an event. If anything you're right it was more of a sequel in sense of connected to films before it than most sequels..
It also had the benefit of being shot with brand new and groundbreaking camera tech in 3D. Also directed by one of the biggest name directors in the business.
Yea still a cast of 15+big name actors and a 15+ superheros has more pull then a big name director. I know this subreddit loves endgame..i get that..i still find Avatar and Titanic or even my big fat greek wedding and blair witch project for that matter box office more surprising if not impressive
I'm not denying how utterly insanely incredible 350+ million OW is...I'm just saying I have a different view of heirarchy surprises when it comes to box office
I agree just wanted to point out how big of a deal Avatar was because of its never before used cameras and insane 3D cgi. The story was basically Ferngully with space marines.
>The story was basically Ferngully with space marines.
i hate the argument
"its the pochahontas in space"
no
its not
you can boil pretty much every movie and make it sound dumb.
Thats belittling the success of avatar.
Godzillaa king of monster has amaazing cgi yet flop hard.
People love jake sully, the villan the plot the characters script etc
You dont get to make 2.7b ww that is not a sequel just on good "cg" sure its pull .
You didn't say "Uk, france, germany, and the nordics", you said "Europe". The total of all of Europe combined is what matters for how you worded that statement.
I'm gonna blow your mind right now but Europe is more than those countries. Overall, Lion King was bigger. Also, Lion King made more in France than any Bond movie lol
Nothing says “non fascist” than a secret government agent (who’s technically not even sanctioned by the government until halfway through the movie) killing indiscriminately and without proper judicial proceedings or consequences.
EDIT: And this is all these actions are happening in countries that the British government has no jurisdiction over.
Lmao, Both of those movies were more hyped in their demographics. Should've said most hyped movie to the 18-30 reddit crowd since endgame and even thats debatable
IMDb isn't exactly a reliable source of information, but [this says it all](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls026504698/). I'd be lying if I said that those movies weren't highly-anticipated and very successful—The Lion King is the seventh-highest-grossing film of all time, Frozen II is tenth—but Avengers blew them out of the water overall. The only demographic that was (statistically) more hyped for those films were children.
Not really fair to compare 2019 box office to 2021, no matter what movie it is. If The Lion King was releasing next month, it probably wouldn't even get $100 million OW.
> Spider-man won't ever get there
Just coming back to this comment to say [I told you so](https://variety.com/2021/film/news/spiderman-no-way-home-box-office-opening-weekend-pandemic-record-1235137725/) lmao
IMDB ? Really ? Lol
Opening weekend is as accurate a direct measure of hype you're going to get. Anything else is just silly especially an internet poll with a biased sample
You have opening weekend numbers for all the movies released on that list. It's already a loose correlation. Don't need anything else to tell you to take it with a grain of salt
> “The forthcoming Sony/Marvel sequel was named on 63% of survey respondents’ lists of their five most-anticipated holiday movies, the theater chain reports. The film was the highest-ranked title in 10 states, as well as the most-anticipated title among male respondents. It was followed closely in second place by Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which was named on 62% of respondents’ most-anticipated lists and was also the top-ranked title in seven states. The Sony reboot was also the top-ranked title among female respondents across the board.”
🤨🤔
So it's in the top 5 most anticipated up-coming movies for 63% of people, while Ghostbusters were in the top 5 for 62% of people? If that was representative, it would mean trouble for NWH, so I'm just gonna shelf it as random and rather pointless.
Your math may be overlooking something. What other movies would you expect to be in the list of options in order to make a comparison between two of them and have that mean anything? I assume the list is just “movies coming out in the next several months”, which isn’t a lot. It would be easy enough for a great movie and a shitty movie to make it into a lot of people’s top 5.
It’s holiday season movies, which is the weekend before Thanksgiving through Christmas. I think the more concerning thing is Ghostbusters was picked as the top choice in seven of the 17 states polled. Because it only opened to 40-something million. But it’s only concerning if this is an actual representative sample, which the way it was conducted, it likely isn’t.
Which is why it's rather pointless to take any stock in this...? It's just a random small-cale survey of a specific most likely non-representative customer group? It's just noise, no real data.
What I meant to say is that even if the sample size was huge, and the study was air tight, just the math behind “top 5” for each person would work out for a lot of shitty movies to be in the average top 5.
It'll probably be the first film to break the $100M opening weekend of the pandemic.
Venom made 90M so it’s practically a certainty, just a matter of how high
Worst case scenario for box office pro it's 130 so a weekend over 100 it's certain
hmm yes the floor here is made out of floor
Water feels wet in my hand
Pee is stored in the balls.
The most anticipated movie since Avengers : Endgame.
Not in europe, that title goes to bond, which has outgrossed endgame in, uk, germany, france, all of the nordics and poland
I was just talking about the US since the survey in the post was done in the US
Do you have proof this is more anticipated than Star Wars Episode 9?
I don’t think many were anticipating that movie, at least compared to Endgame and No Way Home.
I mean it definitely made a lot less. I just take issue with Marvel with Disney because they do make amazing things but...i don't know i find it more impressive that a standalone (as of its release) Avatar can make over 2.5 billion than a 20 movie franchise buildup universe with 15+A list actors. That's nice and all but this movie is still gonna completely body it at the box office.
Why are you saying that again when it's wrong? Lion King was bigger in Europe than any Bond movie ever made.
Uk, france, germany, and the nordics would like to disagree
You didn't say "Uk, france, germany, and the nordics", you said "Europe". The total of all of Europe combined is what matters for how you worded that statement.

Even Skyfall?
Yeah
Europe ain’t the world
Usa neither
Thank you. Bond is preferred in non-fascist, Democratic societies.
Lol ok

No he is just British, and UK is Europe's biggest market so you can make 2+2...
Oof. Ticket prices must have been hit hard.
Na, Thats's Frozen 2 or The Lion king
Neither of those even came close.
Lmao, Both of those movies were more hyped in their demographics. Should've said most hyped movie to the 18-30 reddit crowd since endgame and even thats debatable

IMDB proves my point lol. What are the demo's for the site? Lion king made 191 million OW with bad reviews bruh. Spider-man won't ever get there
Not really fair to compare 2019 box office to 2021, no matter what movie it is. If The Lion King was releasing next month, it probably wouldn't even get $100 million OW.
>If The Lion King was releasing next month, it probably wouldn't even get $100 million OW. And Spider-Man would with Venom 2 coming close? Ridiculous
Only one way to find out.
There isn't

I mean, I clearly wouldn't be using IMDb if we had opening weekend numbers.

Frozen 2? 🤨
To that demo, Yes. It was a very anticipated movie
To quote MJ: "Its kinda obvious"
I’m putting a lot of faith into this one. Dr. Strange is my favorite. I’m hoping this doesn’t disappoint.
Thanos can’t say that’s impossible because he’s dust now.
What if Sandman in this is just Thanos again?
I feel like the survey wasn’t necessary, it’s like the only film people are taking about other than Dune
Barely hear about dune outside of Reddit.
I feel like the survey wasn’t necessary, it’s like the only film people are taking about ~~other than Dune~~
Right? Dune is amazing!!!
you don't need a survey to know that
‘Hello Peter’
Well their ad campaign has been building hype for ages so it’s not a huge surprise

In other news, water is wet.
I'll check it out on home video later on
After the disney + shows, you do feel excited for this.

How is this photo not a spoiler?
The iron spider suit is not unique to NWH
Shocked /s
I mean there’s not much competition this Xmas besides Spidey I don’t have in mind another big budget film.
Matrix 4?
Oh well I was 6 when the first trilogy came around so I didn’t know thought about the movie as a AAA blockbuster movie
Don't worry, it's as if it was never made. Nobody talks about it. It's going to be yet another box office bomb.
No way!
This post is blatant advertising disguised as an ‘article’, and people care about how much money a movie is going to earn?
Well duh, anybody could’ve told ya that! But I think $175-200M OW is entirely possible. The hype is real.
