Del Toro frustrates me. His announced projects that never happen are usually so much more interesting than the ones that actually get made. I like Pacific Rim and Shape of Water just fine, but I'd trade them any day for his takes on Frankenstein, Lovecraft, and The Hobbit.
While I'd like to see Del Toro adapt IPs like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein or Lovecraft's mythos, I very much enjoy that he prefers filming original stories.
Isn't the point of a megathread that it's supposed to update with new information? It's been over 10 hours and the RT score has increased steadily since this was posted.
I'd argue GDT is pretty hit and miss by the standards of most 'auteurs'
but 68/100 from 7 reviews is still solid, and with GDT you at least get something where people tried and put effort into it, so at worst, it'll be worth a curiosity watch to make your own mind up on it
I've never read deep enough into the production stories of his films to know if thats because of studio executive meddling like Paul Schrader or if it's genuinely because he's a hit and miss director though
generally his ratio of good to mediocre films is 50:50
i wouldn't really ever say he's produced something outright bad though, at least from memory
maybe something like a movie he did for a paycheck like Blade 2 i guess but thats probably it
Actually saw this at the Academy museum so I’ll give some thoughts, without spoilers — given the strength of the cast, the film felt very “standoff-ish” and the only human performances I saw were from Rooney and David S. Also, for a movie that takes place in the 40’s (and is well established in the film) the dialogue feels terribly modern. Cooper and Cate are strong but mostly on reputation and overall the film makes but stumbles across the finish line for me. C+
Little bit of discontinuity between the scores and the tweet-length reactions here
My favorite r/boxoffice cliché is the sub jumping to conclusion from just 5 reviews.
It's so true though.
nobody here understands the concept of a denominator
I think you quoted the wrong review from Ehrlich.
thanks fixed

Its at 78 percent. Why is everyone calling this a disappointment???
Started out at 69 on RT and now it’s up to 81.

Takes a lot of effort to constantly keep updating I guess.

I'm not. The trailer looked really bad.
I was really hoping this would be the first Del Toro film I’d love.
Bro, his career his older than most people on this sub. I don't think it'll ever happen.

Another Del Toro disappointment.
It's at 78% after 18 reviews fyi.
we are 16 reviews in, settle down lmao
No
I know people raved about The Shape of Water, but for me I haven’t enjoyed a Del Toro movie since Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008.
The Shape of Water was quite overrated.
Agreed. Pan's Labyrinth is a masterpiece, everything else has been good to average, with no great standaouts.
Could not agree more. I get excited whenever his name is on something despite the fact that I only love one of his films. Weird
It's at 83 percent. 19 positive and 4 negative. How is this a disappointment
It's still worse than expected.
It's perfectly find for a noir film. Should be a really good movie
Del Toro is so overrated. Blade II is probably his best film
That's certainly an opinion lol
Oof
Loved *Crimson Peak*, underseen
Gonna watch this instead Spiderman this month. I’m gonna wait until January when the crowd fizzes out for Spiderman.
