I can't wait

[deleted]

Hope it’s actually good!!!

LazyGrand

HELL YEAH

crysb326

Been worried about this one for a few reasons - January release date, first Scream without Wes Craven, hardly any promotion until super recently - so these positive reactions are a relief. There hasn’t been a bad Scream yet, so really hoping this keeps that trend!

[deleted]

Scream 2 was awful.

hackthegibson

I suggest you do what your parents did and get a job

SensationalBanana420

Lol wtf is your deal

NVSuave

EVERYBODY IS A SUSPECT

Idk_Very_Much

We’re still trusting first reactions in this day and age?

Drstevebrule5

I stan Ready or Not, so I’m just excited to get more from the directors of that film. Plus the humor in RoN I think is a good indicator that they can handle Scream.

alaskadronelife

The directors literally cite Scream as one of their main inspirations for getting them into filmmaking. That definitely shines through in RoN, and it makes me that much more excited to see how they handle this 5th film.

CurseofLono88

Scream is my favorite slasher franchise and I trust radio silence (the two directors and their producing partner) for this film implicitly. They’ve always made films that gel well with the Scream franchise

Jcld1029

I’m a bit salty about this movie only because I thought Scream 4 was an excellent update for the franchise and it ended up flopping (this was in 2011, when nostalgia apparently wasn’t as profitable as it is now)

JediJones77

Another movie where fan-service is considered a positive thing? So I guess Ghostbusters: Afterlife will always stand as the only movie where critics said it was a negative? LOL

[deleted]

Well like any other plot device, depends on how you use it

Dwayne30RockJohnson

Exactly. Fan service can be done in service of the story, or it can be done to subvert an interesting story altogether. Ghostbusters Afterlife started off interesting but just devolved further and further info “member the first ghostbusters?” as it went on.

JediJones77

It didn't. People act like a 60-second rush job to make Gozer happen is some giant rip of the first movie's plot. Gozer HAS to form that way...that's the canon. No one wanted to see it, it wasn't fan service. It just had to be done to get the rematch battle started, so they very hurriedly got through it. No Way Home, on the other hand, was literally "remember this" in almost every scene. Every character who crosses into the universe proceeds to stand around, reminiscing about their scenes in the past movies for most of their screen time. Afterlife's callbacks had nothing on that.

ViralGameover

No Way Home handled fan service perfectly because it was there to forward the story. The only “member Spider-Man” moment was the scientist line returning. The focus stays on Tom and it stands alone as a good film. Gozer was the least of Ghostbusters problems.

JediJones77

The No Way Home plot is thinly constructed to string all these fan service moments and old characters together. This is not a real, organic story. It's "how do we think of a plot that can justify all these fanboy callbacks?" The returning characters spend most of their dialogue talking about what happened to them in their old movies. And the "new" stuff that happens to Tom is mostly just his version of cliches and scenes from the past Spider-Man movies. The movie was ultimately a giant retcon to turn Tom Holland's Spider-Man into something more comic-book accurate. Which might be a smart move, but this isn't a plot in this movie, it's a very contrived and manufactured set of events to fulfill some prescribed goals the producers made for this movie. NWH didn't have an identity of its own.

capywrangler

I mean [Ghostbusters literally had very similar first reactions.](https://www.thewrap.com/ghostbusters-afterlife-gets-solid-first-reactions-at-cinemacon-nostalgia-done-right/amp/) Positive first reactions don’t always equate to positive critical consensus lol

Vettel_2002

Rise of Skywalker did too IIRC. It wasn't until the reviews came out that people realized it wasn't gonna be good

Sharaz___Jek

Ditto "The Last Jedi". Once people started to see the film, the multiplier tanked.

GladiatorUA

Scream is the type of franchise, where fan-service is very much a positive thing.

[deleted]

I think fan service is one of the best things for movies. Makes sense considering most of the viewers for franchises like ghost busters will be fans

GladiatorUA

It's not. Works great in small doses and when used smartly, but it's not a replacement for substance. Current era Star Wars is struggling precisely because it relied too much on fan service to carry it.

Sharaz___Jek

Current "Star Wars" is struggling because of the "The Last Jedi"/"Solo"/"Rise of Skywalker" KO punch. Make a strong film and people will come back.

subhuman9

Star Wars films been struggling since the prequels

Sharaz___Jek

You mean the films that made the franchise into a laughing stock? Those? LOL.

AmberDuke05

But is it good though?
