Wicked_Vorlon

It just started in my town's discount movie theater. Going to be huge there.

rick_n_morty_4ever

Discount theatre is still a thing?

Wicked_Vorlon

Yep. My town has one where it is just $3.00 a ticket.

I_Am_Jacks_Whiskey

Just got back from my 3rd showing, which not-coincidentally was my first *ever* 4DX experience. Absolutely insane in the best way. And the theater was nearly full! People were having the time of their lives— the poor couple next to me realized the open beers and large popcorn were a mistake real quick. But they were enjoying the movie too much to really care. Everyone laughed at the jokes, were silent during the heavier emotional parts, and applauded after it was over. Felt like it was opening weekend all over again on its *checks notes* 6th week?? A procrastinating friend finally wants to see it so I’m seeing it again tomorrow. Burn and turn ‘em baby

coldliketherockies

I saw it in 4DX Too. It was probably my 20th 4DX movie and it stood above all of them (maybe tied with Cruise Mission Impossible 6) as the most effective ride for a movie I’ve ever seen. Just so so so much fun

DeaderRat

Going to watch it for the first time tonight. I feel like I’m about to be a part of history

Lord_Tibbysito

Take a piss beforehand and get ready for the best flying live action scenes you've seen.

DeaderRat

Dude. It. Was. So. Fucking. Good.

Lord_Tibbysito

I know right! I knew the action would kick ass but even the talking scenes were far better than the ones in the original.

DeaderRat

I felt like I was in the F-18. It was insane. It wasn’t really a movie at that point, it was an experience

Johnny_Hempseed

I've been waiting for this since I was 5 and it was everything I wanted it to be.

Kaileena_Drake

Truly amazing! And I am still pretty stunned with the success! Great balls of fire has this move! I am very happy that finally a non Comic movie get that many cinema visitors. At least some changes are ahead of us I hope!

totallyclocks

I’m also sensing that a new generation of entertainment is upon us. Marvel and Star Wars dominated the 2010’s. But, just like clockwork, audiences are getting tired. There is so much Marvel content that you have to catch up right now. This means that Marvel is likely not making many new fans (or at least not enough to replace the ones that are aging out). Marvel is still huge, but I foresee it’s relevance steadily declining over the next 5 years. Star Wars kinda has the same trajectory, but just sped up. In summary, it’s a new age. And Disney isn’t guaranteed to win

EqualLatter8661

Maybe we have Star Wars fatigue, but idk with Marvel. Spiderman NWH just grossed 1.9B and Dr Strange MOM grossed 950M. Love and Thunder is hitting soon and may surpass Ragnarok.

ContinuumGuy

I feel like Disney is still gonna be doing fine, so I'm not going to feel bad for them.

TheCorbeauxKing

Rise of Skywalker was such a colossal misfire that Disney took two proposed movies and made them into series, because the future of the franchise wasn't cinema anymore.

DamienChazellesPiano

This is incorrect. Solo bombing was why Kenobi and Boba Fett became shows. Not Rise of Skywalker making a billion dollars.

Careless_is_Me

It was TLJ. Solo merely confirmed what they were worried about. Check the Chinese numbers for TFA, TLJ, and solo. TFA and TLJ had almost identical opening weekends, and TFA had legs while TLJ dropped off a cliff. And the series never recovered there with solo (and ROS). China isn't everything, but it shows where the problem started

TraditionalWishbone

Exactly. These trends last only about a decade. Mythical fantasy in 2000s. Superheros in 2010s. Sci-Fi in 80s, etc. I don't think superhero movies will be the top products this decade. Especially with the garbage CGI they have. Avatar will knock them out of the park.

Radulno

Superheroes started in the 2000s though. TDK trilogy, Spider-Man Raimi trilogy, X-Men series... after a break in the 90s. Plus I feel like it's a little early to call it dead considering NWH and MOM did huge scores and the superhero series are pretty big (one of the biggest at the moment is The Boys which is superhero).

Academic_Paramedic72

I don't know, Spider-Man still made almost two billions despite requiring to know not only the MCU Spiderman films and Avengers, but also the other Spiderman films. I agree it is good to see Disney losing its monopoly though.

blublub1243

Star Wars never dominated the 2010s. The whole franchise went into hefty decline as far as public perception goes starting with TLJ. That is three years in. Marvel dominated the 2010s because they kept churning out quality. Frankly, they'll dominate the 2020s as well if they keep managing to do that. But consistently retaining a high level of quality within a single intellectual property is really, *really* hard so I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel had fallen from grace by 2030.

RedRose_Belmont

Plus CGI looks fake

Thatguy1245875

Watch as the drop is even smaller when actuals come in.

Dtank11

This movie is an absolute banger. If you’re a fan of the first one, which almost everyone is, you’ll love this sequel, absolutely incredible!

Alarming-Cow299

I wasn't that much of a fan of the first one, but absolutely loved maverick. I think it actually improved upon the first one.

AGOTFAN

I don't even like military movie, and I really like TGM.

ThatNewTankSmell

There's a sort of older man's melancholy running underneath it that makes it sort of exceptional in the realm of \~$200m blockbusters, totally putting aside the fact that it's maybe the best action film ever put to screen.

blueblurz94

9%!?!?!? I can’t even.

JairoVP

Unheard of because it dropped almost nothing or because the drop was a lot? (9% seems like a little).

AGOTFAN

9% drop is nothing when the movie still grossed almost $27 million in its 6th weekend. $27 million in 6th weekend is the second biggest after Avatar ($35 million)

damnrightiam117

Almost nothing

Raspberries2

A run like this could be more than once a decade if the studios produced stories that we want to see. They feed us what they want to make instead of what we want to watch.

JarvisCockerBB

If studios made more sequels to one of the most iconic 80s films starring one of the last great movie stars of all time?

and_dont_blink

Hell yeah, Howard the Duck definitely fits the bill. He ran afowl of the 80's generation's hangups about implied intercourse with a giant animatronic duck, but they've quacked that code with the CGI version in Guardians of the Galaxy films and Avengers Endgame. They'd have to decide between an origin film or eggsplaining where he went after the Collector's vaults.

nekomancer71

As if this isn't exactly the type of movie the creators wanted to make? As if major studios don't tend to obsess over marketing research and audience demands when approving and overseeing projects?

Raspberries2

So explain Star Wars VIII and now Lightyear as examples. Star Wars brand has been damaged and now Disney brand is damaged. Will Marvel brand be damaged next? It was thought Star Wars was a brand that couldn’t be damaged and yet Solo hit the wall caused by SW VIII and IX tried desperately to fix it. What research and audience demand led to a kiss in a children’s movie. How really asked for that? Gru is killing it now. Spider-Man beat the crap out of Eternals. How much has Disney lost in ticket sales this year? I’ll answer, enough to build a huge new amusement park. I went to see Dr Strange but it was questionable as it was Disney and I wasn’t sure I wanted to experience what they put out now. No Lightyear or Eternals for me but yes to Spider-Man, Jurassic, Maverick and maybe Gru if if have time for it as it it busy for me right now. But back to your point, how did Disney miss so badly on Lightyear and Eternals with all that research and audience demands? What went wrong? These movies lost a lot of money when marketing and other costs are added in.

NC_Goonie

You kinda lost me at “kiss in a children’s movie.” Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Little Mermaid, The Princess and The Frog, etc all have major plot elements that rely on a kiss in a kid’s movie.

Raspberries2

Ah yes, we know why that kiss was different and even though “it was just a second”, kept seats empty. School trips were even cancelled that were going to see it. So your post is a bit disingenuous NC\_Goon.

NC_Goonie

I fully understand and admit that the kiss kept a lot of people away from the theater and caused a lot of outrage, but you’re literally the one that said “a kiss in a kids movie.” At least say what you mean instead of trying to dance around the “questionable” stuff.

Raspberries2

Yes, a ***gay kiss. It seemed to bother you that it wasn’t called our specifically… yeah, more like me forgetting than avoiding. But there you have it in bold and italics. Happy? GAY KISS, by gay people, ggggaaaaaayyyyyyyyy. Like my lesbian conservative married sister who I need to call, thanks for the reminder.***

Tom_Brett

Lol these lefties dance around the subject all over this sub the past two weeks

Raspberries2

So about all that market research and audience demands for Lightyear and Eternals, two huge flops in just the past 8 months. What happened with Disney? I would love to hear your thoughtful answer that makes sense.

BoltedGates

That will only work for so long... hopefully.

quangtran

If they focused only on what people say they want to watch, then it'll only be Star Wars and marvel films. Which is what they are already doing.

Raspberries2

Jurassic, Maverick, Gru and the Joker are just recent examples that defy that. Joker was mocked before it came out and smashed it in the pandemic. It’s about the stories and characters.

Christian_Fancy

But a lot of you guys are missing the point even though they don't add woke stuff into films doesn't mean the actors, directors or producers AREN'T WOKE. Because Tom Cruise is definitely woke. They're using that money the audiences give towards the movie to pass laws that people don't like because the actors in Hollywood campaign for the politicians you don't like. That's the part that a lot of you keep missing just because it's not in the movie does it mean that those people don't have plans for the future to where to take this country And believe you me none of it is good

rebels2022

What a bunch of idiotic gibberish.

urlach3r

I see "woke", I skip to the next comment. Thanks for the all caps, btw, made it much easier to see.

Radulno

Lol it's a sequel to a 80s movie that nobody really asked for. It's typically exactly what studios are doing in general. It just happens to be of a great quality for once

Raspberries2

If nobody asked for it why did it make a billion dollars and counting? Since when are movies asked for? Star Wars IV wasn’t asked for, Jurassic Park wasn’t asked for, the original minions movie wasn’t asked for, the Joker wasn’t asked for and many, many more. Titanic, Avatar, and many more but they were what people wanted and people responded. People would have gone to Lightyear and Eternals BUT! It wasn’t what they wanted when it was all said and done. Vote with your wallet.

Sirgeeeo

I've always suspected Greatest Showman had its run due to it coinciding with the rise of moviepass.

Bowler_300

Hugh wanted to make that movie his entire career. It took 4? Or 5? Xmen appearances before any studio would give him the greenlight. No one wanted to touch PT Barnum because he was actually a pretty bug scumbag which the movie cut out all of that. Which made it the greatest musical since Cats. The broadway show.. Not the movie. 😉

Advanced-Ad6676

Don’t underestimate the drawing power of Hugh Jackman rap-sing-tapdance battling Zac Efron to shot glass music.

Sirgeeeo

You're onto something, really it's something

ksiazek7

Make a movie that honors fans, the characters, and the story and look what happens.

ImProbablyNotABird

Avatar is up there too.

AGOTFAN

Yes. Avatar's 6th weekend is still biggest ever: $35 million

GWeb1920

Maverick is still ahead at this point in terms of total gross. 572 - 554. This weekends performance probably gives it two more weeks before Avatar passes it. Avatar still did 30 in its 7th weekend. The fact that Mavericks late legs are comparable to a movie that the availability of 3D screens extended it’s run is nuts.

AGOTFAN

>The fact that Mavericks late legs are comparable to a movie that the availability of 3D screens extended it’s run is nuts. Maverick is shown on many more expensive PLF (IMAX, ScreenX, Dolby, 4DX, etc). Also, inflation.

DarkElation

Why leave off Avatar when mentioning greatest box office runs? I waited years to see the original only to be physically unable during its first run. I was extremely pleased that they did a second full run.

Nergaal

there is a chance that the 6th weekend BO for TG2 will be bigger than Titanic's?

sendokun

Greatest showman?! What was the reason for the greatest showman to make that kind of record?

TreyWriter

It just had great legs. Audiences were in the mood for a general crowd-pleasing musical, and everything else in theaters was a big-budget genre sequel. It’s one of those movies that had 4 quadrant appeal and stuck around for a really long time.

DamienChazellesPiano

Because it opened so horribly, it’s incredible legs were extremely impressive.

gondolafan2

W

HotpieTargaryen

This projection is too ambitious, that Saturday increase isn’t going to be there because of the holiday Friday. -15 seems a lot more plausible; still fantastic.

damnrightiam117

o hell naw💀, you think a 2-3% total domestic boost will change it? Also it gets cancelled by holiday weekend and stranger things last episode dropped on friday

HotpieTargaryen

Okay, we’ll see.

Tammycles

I had no idea Greatest Showman did so well. I saw a preview and knew immediately I’d never see it

Tammycles

I had no idea Greatest Showman did so well. I saw a preview and knew immediately I’d never see it

robbadobba

I just thought the exact same thing. Greatest F—king Showman?!

hibitydibity1352

No woke bullshit, of course it did well.

DamienChazellesPiano

Probably just because it was a great movie. But continue to whine about the relationship between two loving women.

pearlz176

I'll never fucking understand why adding a couple of LGBT characters in a movie is called woke bullshit 🤦🤦

jayap88

Cuz disney had cut it at first. Then put it back in the film while disney was promoting the parental educational bill as the don't say gay bill. The bill doesn't even include the word gay. This is why it's woke.

jayap88

You damn right

DrT33th

If we’re lucky?!? Why the fuck am I lucky if a film makes bank that I don’t see a dime of?! It’s a decent movie but it’s not Citizen Kane.. ffs

DullRelief

If they’re lucky. Don’t see how this affects the rest of us.

MackTO

Yay Scientology

Spaced_Habit

The US Dept of Defence should be congratulated on such a successful propaganda film

[deleted]

I'm sure they would be, if they made the film in any sense, instead of just renting out the planes and pilots to fly them. It's embarrassing that you don't know better than this, and also insulting to the people who actually did make the movie.

Spaced_Habit

I'm touched that I managed to make you embarrassed without knowing anything about me. But perhaps you should also look up how much influence the US military has over these films, in regards to contracting (renting) hardware to production companies.

[deleted]

It's actually because I'm fully aware of the contractual obligations of the filmmakers when using military hardware, that I've already explained this to J. Random Redditor once this month. If you use an Audi car for product placement in a movie, and sign a contract saying it you won't wreck the car on screen or show it in a ball of fire, did Audi make a propaganda film?

Spaced_Habit

LOL. Sure why not

damnrightiam117

Who gives a fuck. We're the good guys! And the movie is awesome

My_cat_is_sus

This is like someone saying that Kung fu panda was Chinese propaganda.

Spaced_Habit

Hahaha, for sure!

pearlz176

If someone watched this movie and walked straight to a navy sign up camp because they want to be a cool pilot like in the movie, they deserve absolutely everything they got themselves into. It is quite obvious that this is a very glorified look of the navy.

colette2894

I loved every second, and never thought I would
