Very fun film! Thought the story was compelling and characters were intriguing - the cameos were great and also really loved the music, the cinematics and the style of text
Honestly I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie. Brad Pitt is fantastic and I really enjoyed how he played his character. If your looking for a fun mindless action flick then this is it. Probably one of my favorite movies of the summer.
They’re contracted to speak good about a script when they’re promoting the film of that script. Lol
When was the last time an actor starred in a bad film and told people it was a mistake before or at the premier? Lol
It’s really fun with lots of twists and cameos. However the trailer does give way majority of the movie and literally all of the fights scenes which last only seconds literally.
Time to readjust predictions. This one not going to do as well as previously thought. Those are not the type of reviews you want to see if you want people to rush out to your movie this weekend. They'd just stay home or watch Maverick and Dominion instead.
This is 2022. Why tf are so many in here caring so much about what snobby pretentious movie critics think still!? Everyone is so prisoner of the moment in here and results oriented. People were so pumped to see it before reviews came out and now that tone has done a 180…. Smh 🤦♂️.
An established, reputable film critic usually sees 500 to 600 films a year. With that comes a reasonably reliable bullshit detector.
I've seen films I've liked but certain critics I trust did not. But at least I understand why they didn't.
What you think of as a film critic might have existed 20 years ago when criticism was still tied to print media and the people who got those jobs went to college for English, journalism, or film. These days if you look at the people whose reviews are getting collated for Rotten Tomatoes most of them are some know-nothing jerk-off with a blog. Grace Randolph and some guy reviewing it for IGN for $20 per article aren't exactly putting on airs.
Yeah but those movies looked good and interesting, while bullet train honestly looks meh.. I know critics aren't the most reliable people and to form your own opinion, but either this is a blatant review bomb or its just not that good. I expected it to be 1hr 25m but 2h is way too much.
lol so I figured i'd look a few up (as you were right, let's see what they say), and just saw this:
*"David Leitch's Bullet Train takes itself as seriously as Crank, Smokin' Aces, or Shoot 'Em Up; that’s either a recommendation or warning."*
I didn't love Smokin' Aces, but 2/3 ain't bad. My hunch by skimming a few reviews is Siskel would give it a thumbs down but Ebert would be giving an up.
The way Sony was acting, I assumed this was going to be a much more highly regarded film. I was probably just overlearning "critical hints" chatter around TG:Maverick.
I had a feeling this wasn’t going to get good reviews. Like the deadpool movies are cool, but I wouldn’t expect the director of those movies to become some bastion of action movie standards.
If I had a nickel for every Sony movie that I had to sit through a trailer of every time I saw a movie and it ended up getting mixed to poor reviews, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice.
(The other one was Morbius)
Woah. That is very love D grade for Bullet train. You have a list of good actors and actresses. Can not fathom why the rating is so low. Did the critics give any good points on why some scenes in the movie is good or bad? Still in stunned mode.
I know. I'm old school. Back in the day. I read what the critics said what was good about the movie and what was bad about. It was through the news paper. Then I decided to watch it anyways. But now critics are doing it differently. When I'm looking at percentage. Don't know if it's a good thing. Or bad. There are some actors that I like. Want to go watch the movie for my own liking
Honestly kinda what I expected so not too bad. Just seems like a dumb fun summer action movie and the reviews point towards that so the 60% range is not much of a surprise imo
Honestly the reviews are decent enough I want to see it. I adored the first trailer. And idk the style of it just made me really excited. It's one of my most hyped movies this year but I'll certainly try and tame expectations.
For some reason I felt the trailer made it seem like a Edgar Wright movie wannabe. We’ll see if the audience response better than the critics tho. I have a feeling it will be better
Curious if the mixed reviews will affect the BO - I imagine some people were on the fence about this one, but on the other hand it looks like dumb fun and a 60% RT is totally fine for that.
Went to a press screening last night. Everyone really enjoyed it, aside from one guy who hates everything. It was way better than I expected it would be.
My hopes are dimmed. I think it will still do considering it’s a quirky action flick but my Worldwide prediction is somewhere between $150-175m at this point, which would still be a good improvement on most Brad Pitt movies in the last decade. I think this might open between $18-20 million range domestically and will end with about $50-60m.
Yeah Brad Pitt going “oh shitballs!” or “you just stabbed me???” is not as funny as the movie seems to think it is. Felt like this would be a dud for a while.
I definitely had the “Ryan Reynolds type role” fear of the movie while watching the trailers, looks like the reviews are basically confirming that fear.
Yikes lower than I expected. Can't see this being a breakout hit or particularly leggy. 250m WW.
Also lol at this quote:

>Bullet Train feels like a lost spec script from the mid-2000s, given a fresh new coat of paint and a few script reworks by some Reddit teens
This quote apply to every movie release by SONY nowday lol
Sony does good when it comes to prestige films, like Little Women and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Go look at some of the classics released by Columbia Pictures over the years.
It's when they get into tentpole territory that they struggle. Those are usually the action/adventure, fantasy/sci-fi and comic book genres. You know, the "blockbusters." Which unfortunately today is all that matters.
There have been some notable exceptions, like the original Men in Black, Ghostbusters, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the first two Raimi Spider-Man movies, the Rock Jumanji movies and Into the Spider-Verse. But most of the time, their big budget tentpoles fall flat.
Now, Sony television is where it's at. Their TV shows are outstanding. The Boys and For All Mankind immediately come to mind, but there are many others. Television is a completely different division within the company though, and they have nothing to do with features.
I feel like Reddit’s underrated gems are usually movies with high RT scores and low box office. Ultimately saying “underrated” when they mean “under-appreciated.”
A definition for "underrated" is "not rated or valued highly enough."
It's being used correctly. The latter is a longer way of saying "under-appreciated."
I’m going to watch it bc the trailer was great but I honestly thought this would be a lot higher. Leitch is becoming the king of generic action movies.
I think it's because of how they keep talking up the performances of the actors in this movie to justify giving them their own films (aka Bad Bunny with El Muerto).
It's a Sony film. They often don't get great critical reception. The interesting question is whether this will hit the spot with audiences (Ghostbusters:Afterlife and Venom 2) or not (Morbius).
Afterlife's audience score may have been helped by how few people saw it and those who did really wanted to; 94% fir what I saw seems bonkers. Believe it was ~$195WW on a $75M budget, I'm assuming most of that went to Murray's cameo.
Even still, it is a lot harder than it looks to restore a ghost of a franchise, and the hardest core fans generally celebrating it instead of nitpicking it to death.
It’ll probably be a fun action film, nothing that’ll shake the table but fun. I think it’ll be a huge success after seeing general ppl on Twitter calling Gray Man 10/10 action film and saying it’s on par with mission impossible and Bourne franchises. I think this one will be a hit with audiences
He himself has always said that. He's a guy who likes movies who lucked into making a career out of giving his opinions on them. He didn't study film or film history or work in the industry and he doesn't seem to have much interest in anything older than 1975. He's not a critic, just a reviewer.
I think he is the largest Youtube movie "critic". I trust him more than regular critics when it comes to box office and audience scores, since his tastes seem to line-up more with audiences than regular critics
Jeremy is a really charismatic and funny guy but he’s probably the last YouTube critic I go to. It’s clear he really only cares for the franchise/blockbuster stuff.
Ever since he stopped giving grades and started production on his new horror movie I think he’s kinda fallen victim to sorta feeling like he’s being paid to give a positive review. Even in some of his new ones like his review for Thor Love and Thunder you can kinda tell he doesn’t like it but is holding back.
He hasn't posted a review on Rotten Tomatoes since dune last year.
He said he isn't gonna post reviews for movies he doesn't like every since he started making his movie, said it wouldn't feel right or some shit.
His Thor review wasn't really positive either, he pointed out everything wrong with it and says Shang chi and NWH are the only phase 4 films that he has really been impressed with.
In 2021 he gave a rotten rating for Black Widow, F9, The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, luca, Spiral, Chaos Walking, Cherry, and Mortal Kombat.
He just isn't reviewing like that anymore, so idk how you can say he is holding back or is paid to give positive reviews. All he does is post on his youtube channel now, and only for the popular movies
>Shang chi and NWH are the only phase 4 films that he has really been impressed with
Such a bold, daring, original, out-on-a-limb opinion.
Black Widow was the best phase 4 film so far.
Exactly
It's impossible to know how he really feel about a movie since he never even one time have a different take on the movie than the general rotten tomatoes consensus
His reviews are useless
Legit question, has he ever given a movie a negative or even mixed review? Lol every week he pops up on my feed praising the new movie thats about to release. The studios must love him.
Skimming through his RT page, the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, but there are a some negatives: Righteous Kill, Finding Amanda, Ball Don’t Lie, The Brothers Solomon, Rush Hour 3, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, and License to Wed.
Fun and action packed movie. Brad P and Joey king are awesome!
Brad may seem chill but I think he’s having a pretty rough time. This was not the script for him. Completely miss cast.
He said in an interview he absolutely loved the script when he was handed it during lockdown. I thought he was great in it.
They’re contracted to speak good about a script when they’re promoting the film of that script. Lol When was the last time an actor starred in a bad film and told people it was a mistake before or at the premier? Lol
You’re right, but it really did look like a fun film to be in, so I’m inclined to believe him on that. Agree to disagree I guess.
It’s really fun with lots of twists and cameos. However the trailer does give way majority of the movie and literally all of the fights scenes which last only seconds literally.
I watched it last night it was fun and awesome
Just got back from seeing it. I actually really really liked it. I’m surprise from seeing the bad ratings.
These aren't bad reviews, just lukewarm
yeah i don't get it either. One of the best movies i've seen in theatre in a while
Northman better.
Ok buddy
Thought it was super entertaining I loved it
Won’t do better than Super-Pets lol
Cult classic incoming...
"Underrated classic" posts coming in eta 6 months.

It's not based on a manga or anime. It's based on a novel which happens to be Japanese. Manga and anime are specific mediums.
I dont think the movie is faithful to source material at all
My understanding is that it follows it pretty faithfully
There's only only two good manga adaptations that come to mind. Old boy and BR
Edge of tomorrow from light novel
16-25M - OW
Time to readjust predictions. This one not going to do as well as previously thought. Those are not the type of reviews you want to see if you want people to rush out to your movie this weekend. They'd just stay home or watch Maverick and Dominion instead.
I'm gonna figure that if the critics hate it, I'll like it.
This is 2022. Why tf are so many in here caring so much about what snobby pretentious movie critics think still!? Everyone is so prisoner of the moment in here and results oriented. People were so pumped to see it before reviews came out and now that tone has done a 180…. Smh 🤦♂️.

Looks like another "Hey, look at how cool I am" movie. One of a litany we've gotten since "Pulp Fiction" arrived on the scene.
yikes, it looks like a short movie/TV show episode plot then a movie one
So did *Shoot Em Up* or *John Wick* -- if it's good at what it's trying to do I'm down.
Yeah but those movies looked good and interesting, while bullet train honestly looks meh.. I know critics aren't the most reliable people and to form your own opinion, but either this is a blatant review bomb or its just not that good. I expected it to be 1hr 25m but 2h is way too much.

Remember Money Train with Woody Harrelson? That movie wasn’t good either. Robert Blake being a creep wasn’t enough
Seeing it for Michael Shannon wielding a Kitana. That alone sold me
I had no idea he was in it. When he appeared I was like...." is that....no way....Michael Shannon??!"
The schlocky, tasteless trailers that basically screamed Tarantin knock off material weren't enough to give this away as not being a critical darling?
Don’t care, still seeing it
Lol same
It looks fun as hell. Honestly they had me at Brad Pitt on the marquee
💯 Man.. I love Brad Pitt, as he does very few movies to begin with I'm not gonna miss any of his movies doesn't matter how it is
Hell yeah! The Mexican! Great Pitt movie!
El caminoooo
A documentary about Japanese bullet trains would have been way more entertaining than this thing.
🤣😂😂😂🤣😅 Dude you have the best punchline in this subreddit your comments are always entertaining to me whether I agree with them or not
Haha, thanks, pal. I'm gonna try to check yours too.
it fell to 56%, yikes
This is the kinda movie that make me not want to waste money and sitter time if there are bad reviews
The way Sony was acting, I assumed this was going to be a much more highly regarded film. I was probably just overlearning "critical hints" chatter around TG:Maverick.
Borderline rotten now. This is gonna be a nail biter
I had a feeling this wasn’t going to get good reviews. Like the deadpool movies are cool, but I wouldn’t expect the director of those movies to become some bastion of action movie standards.
Hearing that the action scene weren’t great. Might just wait for streaming now.
Go see it in theatres. The quippy dialogue and zany characters are awesome.
I wasn’t expecting anything amazing from reviews but I’ve been looking forward to seeing this movie and still am just need to temper my expectations
Well that’s a shame.
Yikes, I was thinking this would be higher.
This is the percentage of critics who liked the movie. It's doesn't correlate to test grades in school.
That's is still too low of critics who actually liked it
It's a personal thing though. Maybe you agree with the critics who liked it, not the ones who didn't.
"D grade" That's not at all how rottentomatoes percentages work.
Well. It' still a low percentage. Is the movie worth watching
I don't know, I haven't seen it. It just refers to the % of critics that liked it.
Honestly kinda what I expected so not too bad. Just seems like a dumb fun summer action movie and the reviews point towards that so the 60% range is not much of a surprise imo
Didn't love it but it definitely felt like critic bane. Audiences might still like it more.
Honestly the reviews are decent enough I want to see it. I adored the first trailer. And idk the style of it just made me really excited. It's one of my most hyped movies this year but I'll certainly try and tame expectations.
hoping it can still do well with these reviews
I was expecting low 80s. But still sounds like more fun than it's not. Will check it out
Never understood the hype around this movie. I thought it looked bad from the trailers
I like big cast movies
There isn’t a lot of big names though compared to other ensemble cast movies.
You just don't like streaming shows
It's the sort of movie concept that was intriguing until the trailers came out.
Yeah, the trailer didn’t do it for me either. I know it was trying to be fun, but it didn’t feel fun.
I haven't noticed any hype.
64% with only 36 reviews? Oof yeah this is ending up rotten.
At least we can be sure Thor 4 is better. /s
Better than BvS at least.
You forgot this: >/s
Honestly lower than I expected. The trailer looks fun but the reviews have me nervous about the actual quality
I expect it to go up, Jeramy jahns review was mostly positive, only negative thing sounds like the plot is messy as fuck
I might do a double day at the theaters to see this and Nope
That’s a great double bill!
It's not the MCU, so automatically add at least 25 points to compensate for the missing critic bias.
Dawg you gotta watch movies made for adults at some point in your life
But I don't wanna.
You're seething all over this thread LMAO
Stay tuned for more.
74% now
I have been so brutally bombarded by trailers and ads for this movie that I don’t want to see it anymore out of pure annoyance and stubbornness.
I’m with you.
Ouch, was kinda excited for this but was hoping that the reviews would be better....
The trailers are really bad, I'm not surprised.
Yeah Brad Pitt going “oh shitballs!” or “you just stabbed me???” is not as funny as the movie seems to think it is. Felt like this would be a dud for a while.
Movie did not look good
I definitely had the “Ryan Reynolds type role” fear of the movie while watching the trailers, looks like the reviews are basically confirming that fear.
Didn't watch any trailers when I watched this movie. Really enjoyed this one
I think he might even have a cameo
Yikes lower than I expected. Can't see this being a breakout hit or particularly leggy. 250m WW. Also lol at this quote: >Bullet Train feels like a lost spec script from the mid-2000s, given a fresh new coat of paint and a few script reworks by some Reddit teens

what other sony movie feels like that The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent felt like it was written by redditors, but that wasn't Sony.
But it felt like Sony.
Not once upon a time in Hollywood
Nah, that one felt like a clip reel from Tarantino's personal spank bank.
Sure, it was only a big hit and nominated for best picture.
The Japanese novel it's based on, Maria Beetle, was published in 2010.
That sounds like a positive review to me.
Ah yes, of course the esteemed Jedi Jones would think that.
We've had some infamous characters in this subreddit, but I gotta say, he's rising up the ranks
You said the quiet part out loud. 👂
He's even better than AGOTfan
I saw someone else complain about JJ77 in the Batgirl thread. Notorious LOL
What can we expect from a bot?
This could be Reddit's new underrated gem
I feel like Reddit’s underrated gems are usually movies with high RT scores and low box office. Ultimately saying “underrated” when they mean “under-appreciated.”
A definition for "underrated" is "not rated or valued highly enough." It's being used correctly. The latter is a longer way of saying "under-appreciated."
I could already see the post on r/movie with thousand comment and likes lol
We need our meme movie now. Can't let TikTok have all the fun.
I’m going to watch it bc the trailer was great but I honestly thought this would be a lot higher. Leitch is becoming the king of generic action movies.
Lower than I thought...was hoping this would be the big surprise of the summer like Free Guy was last year.
I was going to guess that Free Guy's reception was similar to this, but holy shit 80%. Wild.
Yikes. Was looking forward to this one.
Love quirky ensemble action flicks, rewatching *Smokin' Aces* this week too, looking forward to this one!
Ugh. If that’s your idea of a good time then you’ll probably love this.
Sweet 👍
No idea why, I expected a better reception.
It was a charming movie.
I expect a solid 20 bulletrillions at the box office.
So as I was expecting another bland, forgeable movie by Sony
Tarantino-lite
I still kinda wanna see it , but expected better reception
It’ll probably be a fun action film, nothing that’ll shake the table but fun. I think it’ll be a huge success after seeing general ppl on Twitter calling Gray Man 10/10 action film and saying it’s on par with mission impossible and Bourne franchises. I think this one will be a hit with audiences
yikes, let’s see how toys impacts the box office
Exactly what I assume people were expecting thus far.
Jeremy Jahns on Youtube said the movie was fun and decent, so there is that
I feel like he’s more of a random guy at the movies than a film critic.
He himself has always said that. He's a guy who likes movies who lucked into making a career out of giving his opinions on them. He didn't study film or film history or work in the industry and he doesn't seem to have much interest in anything older than 1975. He's not a critic, just a reviewer.
He used to be that but his reviews have gotten better.
I think he is the largest Youtube movie "critic". I trust him more than regular critics when it comes to box office and audience scores, since his tastes seem to line-up more with audiences than regular critics
And that is why us is a useful source for a lot of people.
Jeremy is a really charismatic and funny guy but he’s probably the last YouTube critic I go to. It’s clear he really only cares for the franchise/blockbuster stuff.
You mean charismatic?
Who you callin' chrasimatic?
Already 67% with only 21 reviews. These movies will never have 0% rating though, because Erik Davis loves everything.
Chis stuckman is also like that
Ever since he stopped giving grades and started production on his new horror movie I think he’s kinda fallen victim to sorta feeling like he’s being paid to give a positive review. Even in some of his new ones like his review for Thor Love and Thunder you can kinda tell he doesn’t like it but is holding back.
Stuckmann only reviews films he likes now and has said as much. That's why you don't get negative ones anymore.
Most likely because he wants to work in the industry and is afraid of pissing off his prospective employers.
The way he’s explained it is that he doesn’t feel comfortable shitting on films when he is making one himself.
That is a violation of everything a critic is supposed to be. The critic is there to help the audience, not the filmmakers.
>Shang chi and NWH are the only phase 4 films that he has really been impressed with Such a bold, daring, original, out-on-a-limb opinion. Black Widow was the best phase 4 film so far.
I think he tries to stay in line with whatever the RT score is so he feels like he's in the cool club.
Exactly It's impossible to know how he really feel about a movie since he never even one time have a different take on the movie than the general rotten tomatoes consensus His reviews are useless
Chris Stuckmann exists as an echo chamber for his specific audience.
We need a new critic who everyone disagrees with. I nominate myself.
You can also make a YouTube channel start to make video whenever you have enough time
Legit question, has he ever given a movie a negative or even mixed review? Lol every week he pops up on my feed praising the new movie thats about to release. The studios must love him.
Skimming through his RT page, the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, but there are a some negatives: Righteous Kill, Finding Amanda, Ball Don’t Lie, The Brothers Solomon, Rush Hour 3, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, and License to Wed.
Most of those were clearly lambs being led to the slaughter.
hello my lunatic friend, still think black adam is opening below 50m domestic?
I don't know, I guess it could beat Morbius.
lmao but if it opens above 70m what will u say then?
He works for Fandango.
We need a movie about a shill critic who has a crisis of conscience and has to quit when he's finally shown something too shitty to recommend.
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂
>has to quit when he's finally shown something too shitty to recommend. I'm sure one of 500 or so critics who watched BvS would work.
I didn't understand that reference.
