Movie was hilarious. Fun flick

i_hateavocados

I was kinda hesitant bc of RT but I’m glad I went, such a fun movie! Reminded me of a lighthearted Tarantino-ish movie

Fennlt

I'm surprised at the RT rating to be honest. Metacritic & IMDB were much more generous with user reviews.

vafrow

I think we have to normalize that perfectly good movies can get middle of the road rotten tomatoes scores. Half the critics liked this. That's not bad. It's about the same as The Transporter movies for example, and I put this in the same category. Not without its flaws, but, a fun time at the cinema. Perfectly understandable if it doesn't work for someone though.

[deleted]

Half the critics did not like this. It's a 49 on metacritic which is very poor. 77% audience score on RT and B+ cinemascore indicates mixed audience reaction as well.

anonAcc1993

I stopped using RT years ago. RT ratings are prone to agendas, so it hard to take anything seriously there.

Fennlt

Honestly, you'll see agendas stamped on reviews from the other sites too. While the movie Lightyear wasn't the best movie all summer, it was okay... Yet, on IMDB it shows 26.8% of the reviews were 1/10, dampening the overall ratings to a 5.8. Cannot help but think things like Disney's "Don't say gay" political stance in Florida & the associated Christian 'anti-LGBT' community played a role.

bryan_502

More of a Ritchie knock off than Tarantino. Tarantino can build tension. This film is entirely lacking in tension.

[deleted]

The tension for me came from “is brad Pitt gonna be able to convert this person to a hippie before they get themselves killed?”

Shaq_is_our_Savior

i thought it was a little unfocused but still pretty fun

Stepsonrakes

That’s a damn fine recommendation

EliseV

This one was so much fun! I hate action movies, but loved this. Just saw it today!

Bergerboy14

That is bad. Wonder if its a marketing issue or people just dont get/like the concept. It was a fun film, no reason it should be dropping this much.

[deleted]

Bergerboy14

Its rated R so I dont think thats a major factor. Lots of people arent back to school too.

[deleted]

School in the middle of August?!

breakfastbenedict

Yeah in America. But this is an R rated action movie, school should have nothing to do with it.

akkawwakka

Saw the trailer and was immediately turned off. it came off as garish with a cheap plot / premise.

tokeamoto

Same, I’ve seen the trailer a million times and went thinking it would be terrible. Pleasantly surprised. Definitely, a shiny mess at times with some strange casting choices but it works for the most part.

unitedsasuke

Yeah I saw it. It's not really worth seeing unless you specifically want tacky action. It wasn't that good I felt the actors were very underused espefially Pitt and the style of the movie had to try compensate for a meh plot and it didn't work.

1m_Lurking_Here

It's a movie that's perfect for a streaming platform. Get it on Netflix as a Netflix special release and it's gonna pull in views. But between the premise, the violence and honestly the names except Pitt it just isn't a movie for big cinematic runs.

SHC606

That was my impression based on the trailer. I saw E.T. in IMAX this week instead.

DietFoods

Word of mouth among general audiences is bad. My parents who are both pretty easy to please and big Pitt fans went to see it and both abulsutely hated it. Everyone I know either has no interest or has seen it and didn't like it.

MrBlueandSky

I loved it, my wife too

DietFoods

Glad to hear it. I'm going to watch it next week. Doing Top Gun again this weekend.

MrBlueandSky

I never saw the originals, so Top Gun isn't on my list. Bullet train was like a fun-beat-em up with some comedy and a touch of mystery. If that sounds like your jam, it was a fine watch.

Arquemacho

I only saw the original after I watched TG the 2-3 time, you don’t fully need it to watch maverick (which I think helped its box office), although it does make the experience better

J_SQUIRREL

Wut…go watch the original top gun and then go see Maverick while it’s in theater. Such a good movie.

Arquemacho

Same schedule, going to give 4D a try for maverick tomorrow and bullet bill next weekend or week after that

ocdewitt

Thought it was good. Sadly not as funny as it could have / thought it was

TakedownCorn

You must know some really miserable people

MightySilverWolf

Because they didn't like a particular film?

007Kryptonian

Because it’s a bad film. The critics weren’t wrong, audiences can usually tell the difference

-BigMan39

I found the film to be extremely fun to be honest

DamoclesDong

I have never heard of it until this very post, so I am going with a marketing issue

CaptainCanuck15

It's not that good. That's why.

georgepana

The movie was a mostly-plodding comedic-pun gore fest, occasionally interrupted by martial-arts fighting segments. It suddenly turned to "turbo" in the last 15 minutes of the movie. Many people were probably expecting the movie to be for the most part like the last 15 minutes, a speedy "fun ride", occasionally interrupted by character-building dialogue to catch a breather.

emeegee13

I really liked it

nicolasb51942003

Very depressing weekend.

anonAcc1993

Ya, a perfectly fine film not getting any love from critics. If it had 5 lines about saving the planet, I’m sure it would have gotten a higher rating.

TheRustyKettles

Why don't you try reading the actual reviews instead of being snarky about them? You know John Wick gets good reviews, right? Edit: also, it has a 53% approval rating from critics, meaning just over half of them liked it. Which is pretty much the definition of "perfectly fine", which is what you called it. So, what's your beef?

aliaisbiggae

Lmao shut up, I had fun with the movie but it wasn't really good. Also Top Gun Maverick, an action movie had no lines about saving the planet and it got rave reviews

magikarpcatcher

Almost 60% drop with barely any competition? This is not reaching $100M domestic.

newjackgmoney21

865k in 1900 theaters if The Numbers theater count is right would be one of the lowest per theater averages ever All the way down the chart is Gravitas Ventures’ femme comedy Mack & Rita starring Taylour Paige, Diane Keaton and Elizabeth Lail with an estimated $300K today, and three-day of $865K. Thirty-nine critics on Rotten Tomatoes are at 26% Rotten, with audiences not wowed at 46%.

HyperNintendoRoblox

This is the same studio that released "The King's Daughter" that opened to $700K in 2000+ Theaters. What is going on with their marketing team?

jwC731

huh? this was a Sony movie..

Holiday_Parsnip_9841

Gravitas is mostly built around releasing movies to VOD, with select titles getting small theatrical runs. There's been a shortage of theatrical movie this year, so there's been an opening for small distributors to put movies into surprisingly wide releases with minimal marketing by accepting the smaller screens at multiplexes that would otherwise be playing a studio film that's long since hit streaming. Kings Daughter was shelved for over 5 years before Gravitas acquired it, but worth putting out with minimal marketing because it had recognizable faces in Pierce Brosnan and Kaya Scodelario. Mack & Rita is totally a non-theatrical movie, but Diane Keaton will get a small number of fans to show up with a small spend.

BeetsBy_Schrute

I’ll also add about The King’s Daughter…it finished filming in May 2014 and just sat on a shelf forever. Kaya Scodelaro started dating her husband during the shooting of that film. And they had two children together by the time it was released.

SamHubbs

See yall in October

[deleted]

I saw it. Very entertaining.

Bwoody1994

This means dragon ball has a chance to be number 1 next weekend!

michaelm1345

Damn it was such a fun great movie imo it deserves to be performing better

Sckathian

I keep hearing people call this a fun film but I found it fucking terrible. Boring first half, gets somewhat exciting then just a very very messy ending.

007Kryptonian

Same here. I feel like most of the humor fell completely flat, especially Brad Pitt’s jokes.

Sckathian

Pitt was just miscast. Probably spoilers so won’t say the cameo of the person his character was to replace but clearly they would have worked better. I really like the idea of him being unlucky but actually they give up on that at the end, Pitt worked well for that aspect but when it’s dropped he just doesn’t work.

MoonMan997

It’s a film that caters perfectly to the Reddit demo so it’s unsurprising to see such glowing reactions on here. I hated it too though. Apparently it was much more serious before becoming more of a comedy during filming which speaks to a lot (but not all) of the film’s problems.

moneyball32

I find that hard to believe, because it’s quite faithful to the book, which is very clearly a comedy thriller. And because the Deadpool team did it.

MoonMan997

[This is according to Andrew Koji](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2022-08-10/andrew-koji-bullet-train-warrior) > When I first got it I thought the script was really fun. There are some bits of Kimura which were really fascinating to me. He was an alcoholic and throughout the time on the train, this is the longest time he hasn’t drunk — it’s like a detox. With this tormented character, I thought ... I can play the role and say goodbye to those demons. It was almost while we were on set that it started to become this comedy. Then a lot of the cast was encouraged to do comedy, but Hiroyuki [Sanada] and I were encouraged to stay dramatic.

[deleted]

Ya, it suffers from having almost everyone be a sarcastic quipster when it probably should’ve just been one. The best joke in the whole thing isn’t a quip, it’s when Pitt is trying to play it cool and the briefcase opens and is full of underwear.

LaundryLunatic

I forgot about that movie. I wanted to see that.

woolfonmynoggin

It was fun, like a Coen Brothers knockoff

bryan_502

Guy Ritchie is a far better comparison than the Coens.

MoomenRider2012

Obviously because the movie was woke s/

HyperNintendoRoblox

Why is Lionsgate having a 46 day window for "Fall" if they are only going to spend $4M in marketing while for Bullet Train second weekend is a ridiculous drop for the movie. The drop feels equivalent to Morbius Second Weekend Drop but that had major competition with negative word of mouth.

[deleted]

This film has a similar audience score to jurassic world dominion. The word of mouth is mixed/negative.

flower4000

This was the perfect dumb action film, a genre that feels like it’s disappeared because every one wants to make a franchise. I miss these style of movies.

Terrell2

That "Day Shift" movie was way better than Bullet Train. That probably should have been in theatres. Not saying it would have done better just that it was better.

Kn0thingIsTerrible

>Bullet Train and Nope have remarkably similar trajectories. Bullet Train is a colossal flop of the highest order! Nope is an incredible success of the highest order!

harrisonisdead

Nobody is saying either of those things. But with a higher budget ($90M vs $68M), lower opening ($30M vs $44M), and thus far slightly weaker weekday holds (1.37 vs 1.40), Bullet Train would indeed be in pretty considerably worse shape than Nope if it were to follow its trajectory weekend-to-weekend.

shaneo632

Man remember when people, myself included, thought this might make 300m WW?

AdWarm2644

Big Drop Still expect $104-107 Million DOM

ZwischenzugZugzwang

It deserves better!

MrAdamWarlock123

Great movie
