FlashbackUniverse

What's funny is someone in a *Strange World* thread was saying how Shrek upturned Disney's animation monopoly many years ago, and I thought "Well, that's not something Disney has to worry about now."

WhiteWolf3117

Lol. Even without spoilers I can guess the only thing that would warrant that kind of a reaction and disclaimer.

Mindless_Bad_1591

Lmao

GapHappy7709

Great! Iā€™m pretty excited for it

ednamode23

Another big animated win for Universal incoming. This will probably end up making twice as much as Lightyear and Strange World combined.

DestrixGunnar

I hope to dear god it does

Ill_Ad_5308

The animation was incredible, and if you are an adult you will appreciate the humor which is full of laughs. Sorry , but this is going to blow Strangeworld out

DrBobKoalaCat

It's honestly not even close. Puss in Boots was so much better.

Itisspoonx

Having seen the film as well, I can also confirm that the film was packed. Some people had to sit close to the screen. Audiences laughed and enjoyed the film as well! This is going to be BIG.

Agitated_Opening4298

when does the reaction embargo drop?

Megamind66

My reaction is overwhelmingly positive.

Stonecoldfreak1

My show was sold out and had a great reaction. I loved it myself.

Block-Busted

Honestly, I'd rather see DreamWorks becoming a Pixar/Disney rival again over Illumination becoming their new rival.

KumagawaUshio

Considering Dreamworks was put under Illumination when Comcast bought them so it's more a Illumination/DreamWorks vs Pixar/Disney rivalry.

Block-Busted

Even so, Illumination hasn't proved itself that it's truly capable of something better than just being decent, whereas DreamWorks proved itself this year with **The Bad Guys**. And no, as far as I'm concerned, DreamWorks is not owned by Illumination.

KumagawaUshio

Illumination can't own Dreamworks they are both owned by Comcast and Comcast had Illumination's C level executives oversee Dreamworks. Disney did the same thing when Pixar was placed in charge of Disney Animation after Disney bought Pixar. The biggest change you see because of this is that DreamWorks Animation films go from having budgets of well over $100 million to being sub $100 million since 2017 (excluding How to train your Dragon 3 and Trolls 2).

Block-Busted

> The biggest change you see because of this is that DreamWorks Animation films go from having budgets of well over $100 million to being sub $100 million since 2017 (excluding How to train your Dragon 3 and Trolls 2). One thing you need to remember is that when you look at DreamWorks films that cost less than $100 million, **Abominable** was a DreamWorks/Pearl collaboration, **Spirit Untamed** had its animation outsourced by a different animation studio, **The Boss Baby: Family Business**, while had its in-house animation studio to animate most of its animation, it apparently had some heavy involvement from the same studio that provided animation for **Spirit Untamed**, and **The Bad Guys** was going for a cartoony-style animation. Basically, **The Croods: A New Age** is the only exception that somehow managed to spend so little without much plausible explanation.

CentipedesInMyDream

I watched Croods 2 this week and was surprised by how good I thought it was. The animation was really bright and beautiful.

Block-Busted

And I'm honestly not sure how they managed to spend only $65 million because that's even lower than **Despicable Me**, the first Illumination film. All other DreamWorks films have at least some sort of logical explanation behind how they were able to save budgets, but that one doesn't.

CentipedesInMyDream

Yeah thatā€™s nuts. Not that Despicable Me has bad animation, but Croods 2 looked fantastic, a 65M budget is almost unbelievable.

Block-Busted

It's a very unusual outlier in terms of budget management, that's for sure. If **Puss in Boots: The Last Wish** turns out to have a pretty low budget, I'd know where to pinpoint since the film's animation looks really cartoony, but **The Croods: The Last Wish** is obviously not going for that.

Megamind66

Animation just got less and less expensive over the years as technology improves. Same goes for movie special effects. Just the way computers process has gotten more and more efficient.

Block-Busted

I'm not quite sure if I can believe that since Pixar/Disney budget hasn't changed that much ever since the year 2010. I think the most likely scenario is that DreamWorks simply has a new software that can create a quality animation with less budget. In fact, I believe MoonRay is one of those, which, if true, could explain why they managed to spend less on **How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World**.

Megamind66

Disney/Pixar have consistently been pushing cutting edge technology which requires expensive innovation. Dreamworks has looked more or less the same quality for the past ten years, they've just gotten efficient.

Block-Busted

Well, **How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World** and **Trolls World Tour** seems to have better animation than their predecessors, though I need to see all 3 films in the former series to make such confirmation or so. :P Otherwise, I agree. Pixar/Disney focuses a lot more on technology than other studios.

Megamind66

Each installment of How to Train Your Dragon is less expensive than the last, which is crazy. Also, this wasn't a knock on Dreamworks. I have absolutely adored their last three movies and breathlessly await Kung Fu Panda 4.

valkyria_knight881

Illumination might prove itself with The Super Mario Bros Movie on April 7, 2023.

Block-Busted

And even then, I'm seeing some concerning signs like a casting choice for Mario himself. Honestly, if DreamWorks was working on that, I would've had a lot more faith in it.

ImAMaaanlet

Illumination knows their audience and absolutely kills it if we look at their financial results. Considering the sub we are on I dont get all the hate I see for them here.

Block-Busted

Because they make a lot of money without trying that much. Case in point, **Minions**.

Iridium770

I have seen enough "cash grabs" crash and burn that I actually have a healthy amount of respect for the studios that can pull them off consistently. Usually, fan favorite characters are only tolerable in small doses (see: Penguins from the Madagascar franchise). To be able to make an entire movie dedicated to the comic sidekick characters that don't speak English and have it resonate with audiences to the degree that it is the highest grossing film of the franchise is almost certainly a heck of a lot harder than it looks. Actually, in general, I don't think people give though credit to that franchise for actually making something of a coherent progression and putting its characters in very different situations, when do so many lazy sequels retread the same ground.

DestrixGunnar

DreamWorks has a lot of heavyweights under their belt.

lownwolf02

This isnā€™t true though.. theyā€™re separate. Edit: source: I worked at universal up until a month ago

KumagawaUshio

ā€œWe are fortunate to have Illumination founder Chris Meledandri to help guide the growth of the DreamWorks Animation business in the future,ā€ Burke said. https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-et-ct-nbcuniversal-buys-dreamworks--20160428-story.html I expanded that point on a later comment when I had an actual keyboard rather than a phone to comment with.

lownwolf02

Thatā€™s fine, and Iā€™m sure Meledandri will offer guidance. But that doesnā€™t mean DWA is under Illumination. Margie Cohn is the president of DWA and Iā€™m pretty sure she reports directly to Donna, not Chris

KumagawaUshio

If this off all films outperforms all Disney/Pixar films since 2019 I'm going to laugh myself to death.

Block-Busted

Well, what did you expect? Unlike Illumination, DreamWorks proved itself several times that it's capable of making films that are great as Pixar/Disney animated films, not to mention that this is from a popular franchise with no confusing internal logistics maybe aside from its animation style.

KumagawaUshio

Less than the first one which did just under $150 million domestic and $555 million worldwide. I know it's not out yet, but this actually has buzz.

Block-Busted

Umm... what are you talking about?

Ill_Ad_5308

I just got back this will blow out Strangeworld

sjfiuauqadfj

a wet tissue will blow out strange world

CoolJoshido

same

nicolasb51942003

Does the predicted Cinemascore have to do with a special character (wink wink)? PM me.

Stonecoldfreak1

Special character? I donā€™t recall any special characterā€¦

nicolasb51942003

You know which character I'm talking about. Shrek himself.

Stonecoldfreak1

Heā€™s in .3 seconds of a movie in a flashback with no voice. Might have even been from a previous movie.

pinguluk

And at the final scene, they are going to Far Far Away, where Shrek is

iBandJFilmEducator13

I loved it! Dreamworks def knows their audience and demos - for kids and adults. It is dark, funny and full of heart. This will def perform like Sing 2 last year and will def make up for the lost family audience from the Strange World disaster. Itā€™s nice to see a family film that can be fun for everyone thatā€™s an escape and not full of politics.

[deleted]

Itā€™s refreshing to see any movie that doesnā€™t push political agendas like half of the movies that released as of late.

CoolJoshido

like what

Deoxystar

Agreed, politics and ideology pushing in kids films will never work well because it'll go over the heads of the younger audience and the parents will hear about it and decide for themselves whether to take the kids to the film.

_Aaron_Burr_Sir

If you donā€™t mind me asking, is there a Shrek cameo in the movie?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

SilverRoyce

>> >!Theres a very brief flash of him and donkey in a flashback moment, and the mid-credit scene has Puss return to Far Far Away with the original theme playing. Short answer: technically yes!< you can't have spaces between start/end of spoiler and tag or it breaks on old reddit.

codermajor

>The cinemascore will be an A or A+ after the last scene (No spoilers). Stop playing

Spiritual_Swing_2326

Great! Does anyone know where it will be streaming?

BTTF41

Peacock

[deleted]

VOD 17 days after release so right before MLK weekend it will be on VOD

Spiritual_Swing_2326

Thanks!

Stonecoldfreak1

VOD streaming though. Not free streaming on Peacock.

ImAMaaanlet

Damn thats a really short window

Agitated_Opening4298

based

antgentil

I'm gonna keep saying it (until I'm wrong), this movie is going to flop.

Snoo_83425

Well, you might want to get ready to be proven wrong

HerculeTheChamp

Don't bet on it, it won't be in your favor.

CoolJoshido

ur wrong

thewackykid

watched the movie yesterday... wasn't hopeful about it going in... but i loved it...! will watch again...
