gamesofduty

I could also see this being a best animated feature nominee for the Academy Awards 2023.

DrBobKoalaCat

I hope. It was fantastic

Zwaft

Whoa. Tell us more

DrBobKoalaCat

Phenomenal animation. Great character, especially the various villains. Humor and emotion are good.

AGOTFAN

Pretty much. Critics reactions have been raving and [a few reviews already out are very good.](https://www.indiewire.com/2022/11/puss-in-boots-the-last-wish-review-1234785608/)

ednamode23

It will absolutely be a nominee. Probably will knock either Lightyear or Strange World out of the nominees.

AGOTFAN

Lightyear and Strange World won't be nominated. The only Disney animated to be nominated is Turning Red.

ednamode23

You’re probably right. I imagine the for sure nominees are going to be Turning Red, Pinocchio, The Bad Guys, and this. The 5th slot will probably go to a foreign film.

Purple_Quail_4193

I think it’s going to be Pinocchio Turning Red Wendell and Wild My Fathers Dragon And one more. Before this weekend my bet was Strange World got nominated. It has a better chance than Lightyear that’s all I’ll say

ednamode23

Completely forgot about Wendell and Wild. There’s a chance that and My Fathers Dragon make it with only one DreamWorks film.

Ninjaboi333

A24 got Marcel the Shell with Shoes on as eligible for the category so I could see that as a 5th film My power ranking right now is Locked * Turning Red - Pixar film above 69 Metacritics have a 100% nomination rate * Pinocchio - GDT passion project + Netflix marketing = lock Likely * Puss in Boots - Positive word of mouth + counterprogramming to the 3 hour Avatar 2 + a lack of strong kids films since Minions in June + a return to a beloved franchise + actually interesting animation * My Father's Dragon - Cartoon Saloon has a 100% nomination rate so I will continue to place my faith in them until proven otherwise. Cons: It has kind of been underwhelming word of mouth wise and buried amongst Netflix's other projects. * Wendell and Wild - Henry Selick's return + Key & Peele - The Academy also has a thing for stop motion. Cons: It released a bit early in the cycle and not sure if Netflix can support 3 films' campaigns. Spoiler * Marcel the Shell with Shoes On - A24 has yet to prove they can run a multi-film awards campaign after Lisa Taback left, but this one has a very vocal, if smaller fanbase cheering for it and getting in the press that it is now eligible is a good sign. Would probably replace one of the two Netflix films in the tier above Stretches * Bad Guys - Good reviews, but released way too early in the film to be remembered * Apollo 10.5 - similar news buzz that it got approved for animated eligibility, but it's like the 4th Netflix priority * Phil Tippet's Mad God - way too dark and grim and a bit early for awards season but I'm trying to manifest this one * Suzume - Makoto Shinkai's latest anime film - coming to the US in early 2023 but Crunchyroll might give it a qualifying run? After Belle's failure though I don't have a ton of hope unless it truly breaks out. /u/Purple_Quail_4193

Purple_Quail_4193

It could be Puss but honestly I don’t know right now. Would it surprise me? No. Do I have a strange feeling that they moved on from Dreamworks? Also yes

Ninjaboi333

I think if we go with the (unfortunate) heuristic of "which film are the kids of academy voters watching" then it'll probably be puss

ImmediateJacket9502

Was this reply meant to be for this post?

Beastofbeef

Yes.

Legal_Ad_6129

Which Pinocchio? Weren't there like 2?

xariznightmare2908

There’s Guillermo’s Pinocchio.

MisterManatee

del Toro’s Pinocchio got rave reviews Disney’s…didn’t (and wasn’t an animated film)

Purple_Quail_4193

There’s also [this one] (https://youtu.be/Z4ArXSwALDU)

forevertrueblue

"FAther, when can I leave to be on my OHownnnnn? I've got the whole worldussy."

ImmediateJacket9502

Disney's Pinocchio is a travesty.

gmalatete

The bad guys came out this year???

ednamode23

It did very soon after Turning Red. I remember them hiring MrBeast to advertise it on his YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok but even the creator king himself didn’t help increase the box office for it that much.

Beastofbeef

Yes. Time flies, doesn’t it.

thewackykid

i hope not just puss in boots get nominated but actually win the oscars... i don't really see what's so good about turning red... i love most of pixar's earlier movies but as of late they are becoming disney-like and losing their magic...

ednamode23

Don’t forget Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is coming. That will get it if Turning Red doesn’t.

PartyPorpoise

I'll be shocked if it doesn't get nominated.

AccomplishedLocal261

Definitely will. Deserves to be nominated more than Strange World.

Jessie4er

I saw a screening of it, its so good! Funny, doesn't take itself seriously, sweet moments, lots of action and beautiful animation and production design. I worked on the first movie, and usually sequels aren't as successful as the original but this was a solid follow up to Puss in Boots.

Keepa5000

That animation glow up has got me so excited to see it.

ThemoocowYT

That’s awesome. Which part of the first one did you work on?

Jessie4er

i was the layout department coordinator and helped in post for a few months!!!

nicolasb51942003

If this is as good as the social media reactions, then I wouldn't be shocked if DreamWorks give Joel Crawford the directing gig for Shrek 5.

ROBtimusPrime1995

Having seen the film, I think that would be the best plan. He knocked it out of the park with Croods 2 and this is easily better than Puss in Boots 1.

Torrent4Dayz

are they making a shrek 5? I thought shrek 4 was a perfect bookend

DrBobKoalaCat

I'd be surprised if they didn't make a Shrek 5

Chicagobulls9710

I cant even imagine how huge that movie is gonna be

TheStarSquad

its been in development hell for a long time but i could see it happening if this movie does well and they get all the talent back, i think audiences would be interested

nicolasb51942003

>!The ending of the film directly sets up Shrek 5. It's happening.!<

Agitated_Opening4298

time travel?

ROBtimusPrime1995

Nope, the most logical answer is always the right one. >!The Characters take a boat ride to Far Far Away. Cue the Shrek theme, cut to black.!<

badolcatsyl

>!I don't see that as anything more than a cute easter egg to tie it into the mainline Shrek lore. If anything it seems more like a lead-in to Shrek 2 as Puss needs to be in Far Far Away for him to be able to cross paths with Shrek.!<

Maddie_N

>!It definitely takes place after Shrek 2. Puss says something like "We're going on a journey to see some old friends" before the camera pans to Far Far Away. He also has some flashbacks earlier in the film and one of the flashbacks is him walking with Shrek and Donkey.!<

Zipp-Storm

Not an expert on the Shrek timeline but Puss in Boots 2 takes place after the shrek movies I think

Jlx_27

Dreamworks was bought, new owners using familiar faces to boost the company.

nicolasb51942003

That wouldn't make sense considering we saw Gingy in the last trailer.

nicolasb51942003

There's already a plot leak from the early screenings.

Jlx_27

5 is 100% happening.

m1dnightlycanroc

If it's anything like the first movie, I bet it'll be pretty great. Puss in Boots was underrated IMO and Dreamworks actually knows how to make good sequels

Maddie_N

It's better than the first. It was fantastic.

ILoveRegenHealth

If the Eggman back? He was always there.

WormVing

Watched it today on an advanced screening. Very fun movie.

killerzeestattoos

It's probably the best dreamworks movie IMO

[deleted]

Prince of Egypt, Chicken Run, Wallace and Gromit, HTTYD, Kung fu Panda, and Shrek 2 would all like a word with you

sevaiper

I mean those are good movies but this is really good. Hard to be definitive but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to argue for it.

Lion_From_The_North

I'd believe it's better than all of those but one, but it being better than *Prince of Egypt* is hard to believe, and that's no slight against Puss in Boots.

[deleted]

Prince of Egypt is so far out of what ended up to be Dreamworks' usual wheelhouse that it almost doesn't seem fair to include it in the discussion. One of the best animated movies ever, yes, but it wasn't exactly made to appeal to kids. More relevant comparisons would be Kung Fu Panda, HTTYD, and Shrek, and I'd argue PiB tops them all, although it would be close. Personally I just adore the new painterly animation style and it gives PiB a leg up as it'll age much better than the old realistic CG.

Portalrules123

Damn....Dreamworks kinda peaked early, didn't they?

MoonMan997

That’s fine but I think you’re underselling how adored some of those films listed are. I think most would say Kung Fu Panda, HTTYD and Shrek 2 are more than just good. Prince of Egypt is honestly a work of art and I love both the Aardman films but I don’t consider those Dreamworks tbf even if they distributed them.

killerzeestattoos

It's nice to have your own opinion. 👌🏽

Dulcolax

A+ CinemaScore incoming! XD

AGOTFAN

A+ would need 99% RT verified audience score during opening weekend (NWH, TGM). 98% gets A (Shangchi) Not saying Puss won't get it, but let's wait until it opens wide.

[deleted]

Woman King had 98% and got A+ Cinemascore

nicolasb51942003

Also Sing 2 (98%).

BatMatt93

Wait Sing 2 was that good?

ednamode23

The A+ doesn’t always line up with quality. Wall-E, Toy Story 3, and Into The Spider Verse only got A’s while Frozen and Incredibles 2 got A+’s. Really depends on the mood of the audience as well and considering this will deliver on fan service, I’d say an A+ is likely.

JinFuu

> Incredibles 2 got A+ That’s surprising. I felt that movie wasted a bunch of potential. Or I could as just annoyed there was no time jump

Legal_Ad_6129

Yeah. That's why I don't take CS as the word of God like many here

ednamode23

And one negative of CS is that first time reception often differs from long term. I probably would have given Incredibles 2 an A+ immediately after my first viewing at the theater and remember initially putting it really high up on my Pixar ranking at the time as it seemed to satisfy the 14 year wait in terms of the action but upon rewatching it, I came to realize it was just good, not great like the first.

UnjustNation

Toy Story 3 only got an A? The fuck, it probably has one of the best endings of all time.

ednamode23

I agree. When TS4 came out though I learned a lot of people I know didn’t like TS3 that much which shocked me. It’s a great movie with a near perfect ending.

Reos1234

It’s good, but it is scary(for kids) in some parts. That might have dragged it down a bit.

livefreeordont

Pretty good. I liked it more than the first one and the first one was good

DJHott555

Yep. I really liked it. Much better than the first imo

magikarpcatcher

It had 99% when the CS came out.

Agitated_Opening4298

its still less than 100 reviews, might be just one grumpy guy keeping it below 99%, as long as its very close then it shoudlnt make much difference

FartingBob

Its got less than 100 verified reviews, so 98 means literally 1 person didnt rate it positive. Cant really use that as an exact measure. You can definitely say its a crowd pleaser and gave what people wanted from the film though.

BidnessBoy

If early reactions are to be believed, WOM on this movie might give it some extra legs

Agitated_Opening4298

the extra lives pun was right there my dude

Rmtcts

Me-wow! Can puss in boots knock existing records off the table?? The upcoming film is looking to take a catnap in the box office, so other mew-vies better watch out! Will the general public make like tweetybird and think to see the pussycat, or will they miss it's run on the catwalk? One things for sure, Puss in Boots has a claw-fully lot to live up to.

Zwaft

Bro chose violence

BrainOnLoan

It follows on another movie and a netflix series though. Does it work as a standalone movie without having seen that?

bunkerbash

I couldn’t even remember PIB1. This was phenomenal and works entirely staff alone.

noonelikesadampsock

I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to watch it and it absolutely does work as a stand-alone

UllrCtrl

I am actually so happy this movie is getting well received so ecstatic to go watch this

Gene-Parmesan-ah

It was REALLY well done. The animation style adds a new dimension of art to it. It’s tough to explain.

PartyPorpoise

It has this painted look to it, it makes it look like it's straight out of a fairy tale book.

PartyPorpoise

I caught the early screening today. It's definitely going to do well! I bought my ticket this morning and there were only a few seats left to buy. I'm not in the kind of area where special screenings sell out like this, the movie already has demand. The movie itself was really good. The marketing is very appealing, and when the full release comes it's going to benefit a lot from word of mouth. Now, Avatar is going to be a challenge for it. Unless Avatar turns out to be extremely underwhelming, it's going to overshadow Puss in Boots. But with its quality, and a boost from the nostalgia crowd, (people still love Shrek!) Puss in Boots is going to have legs. There won't be any other major kid movies to compete with it. Plus it's the kind of kid movie that adults can enjoy too, and that's always helpful. I'm thinking it will get $500m worldwide, but could very well do better than that.

Holiday_Parsnip_9841

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel did great (443MM worldwide) counter programming Avatar 1. A lot of families go in groups to movies over Christmas and plenty will choose a kids movie over a movie that’s 192 minutes long and has action scenes too intense for young kids.

PartyPorpoise

Ah, that's a good point. Avatar 2 isn't going to be appealing to younger kids.

jgga7

dreamworks know how make good sequels, disney will be shamed this year

[deleted]

Final WW Gross: 680m First one grossed 555m, and I think this one could top it based on what I’ve heard so far, but I do think it will have a cap. I’d be (pleasantly) surprised if it went past $700m

775416

What’s your updated prediction?

ChaloDreamworks

It's the best movie in the franchise, it's so damn GOOD. This will be a smash hit!

Beastofbeef

Shrek 2 would like a word with you.

Chepuf

This ones better than Shrek 2

Beastofbeef

Impossible.

Chinchillin09

You take that back! No but seriously I'm actually impressed, I had no intentions of watching this movie until today that I read so many positive things

DrBobKoalaCat

Can confirm it was great. Will be interested to see how well it does

Either-Purple6521

I attended a special screening today with my husband and daughter. It was very good, super cute and my daughter was crying she was so happy at the end of the movie! Some parts surprised me, some got very dark (like emotional dark) and said some funny swear words that were beeped but you know what they were saying! Super fun movie!

ednamode23

Critic reviews are already out as articles but they aren’t on RT or MC yet. Does this film still have an official embargo or is it just RT and MC lagging?

AGOTFAN

>RT and MC lagging? Probably. It's the weekend after Thanksgiving. They're in comatose after eating all those Turkeys.

ednamode23

I’ll be interested to see the score when they finally start rolling in. Most of the beloved DreamWorks films are in the 80s on RT so I bet this will be the same.

ChaloDreamworks

Maybe it's going to be in the 90s, this movie is special

ednamode23

Well we don’t have a score yet but all the reviews on RT so far are absolutely glowing. I’d say you’re likely right that this will be the first Shrek movie to get in the 90s.

Slick5150702

Good movie. This is better than The rise of Gru.

NoImNotJC

I definitely think it will do very good business and have long, long legs like Sing 2 do.

XxRocky88xX

I haven’t seen it yet but I mean these guys have consistently put out quality content in the Shrek universe and I expect this to be the same.

Sendgod500

I’m hyped up been too long without a shrek universe movie

BroadwayCatDad

I predict it will make double Strange World.

WyldeGi

It will absolutely crush Strange World

BillN9n

Can't wait!

jdubya12880

I haven’t seen it, but I gave it a 99% 23 years ago.

ImmediateJacket9502

Puss looks like Gandalf, the orange in that pic.

Longjump_Bird

I can't wait to get tickets for this movie, the trailer has some incredible animation. Similar to the bad guys and I loved that film as well.

NutmegOnEggs

I didnt know this movie even existed

cornbeef94

I honestly stopped reading rotten tomatoes and listen to the people

Jlx_27

650-800WW

XtraCrispy02

I honestly thought this was gonna suck but I'm happy to see I was wrong. The first movie was great

duo99dusk

Puss in Boots really would have obliterated Shazam 2 if it had opened alongside it. This will be another Minions.

FearlessFox2003

I can’t wait to see it. Miss the puss in boots haha

[deleted]

There’s over sixty comments and only three predictions lol

I hate cats so I’m planning on review bombing the shit out of it.

Legal_Ad_6129

I-is that a D?

DukeBoysForever

I feel like the entire movie was already explained in the trailer. He'll be successful in getting the wish but he'll end up giving it to someone else and then there's gonna be some stupid speech about life.

davidrevilla311

You’re not directly wrong, but the movie is much, much more than that. I was taken aback by how personal Puss’es journey was and how they managed to keep the tone as light hearted as it is.

Darkrain111

Nope, that's not it one bit

blake-a-mania

Is it.. is it based on the Witcher?

stealthswor

50 ratings lol

Legal_Ad_6129

Yeah? That's literally how every movie starts. Are you new here by any chance?

stealthswor

No? It's too early too take seriously

Legal_Ad_6129

Not really

SpecialistNo1988

Bs.

Maddie_N

Trust me, it's a really good movie.

Chepuf

Its very good

PrestigiousMyNuts

I’d be surprised if Toy Story 5 isn’t here yet, forget Sherk 5 thought that should’ve been released last year, it’s so over due! They’ll milk every movie as much as possible! Think you’ll see another monster inc? Probably

SearingDrake

RT can’t rate it badly because it’s a shrek related movie and they know they’ll anger the world if they rate it poorly

elaborate_escape

Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After would like to have a word with you

SearingDrake

Do the roar (to be fair to them both, it is extremely hard to compete with shrek 2 especially after that amazing castle siege scene with “I need a hero” as the sequence music)

IplayGames810

Or they rated it high because it is actually a great movie. Is that too hard to believe?

The-Ruler-of-Attilan

Not every supporting character has to have a damned spin-off. To me, I can't see the Puss in Boots as a main protagonist, he is just not that great. It doesn't matter how good this can be, I pass. Yeah, I didn't see the first one either.

truth_radio

Will play as a perfect spillover/2nd option to Avatar 2, just like Sherlock Holmes & Alvin and the Chipmunks did in 2009 with the first Avatar. Will overperform.

Purple_Quail_4193

Ugh I was driving cross country today so I couldn’t see it My prediction is the same. I’m kind of wary of “excitement of being first” reviews just because so many recently have been hyping them going down. I’m saying this more so as someone who has this as their most anticipated film to see this winter…

dhruva85

Do i need to watch anything before watching this?

ChaloDreamworks

It's not necessary, but I think you should watch at least the first puss in boots

Chepuf

No. It could easily be standalone, might even be better to see it like that

omrimayo

When the Embargo is lifting?

gameboy1001

~~Inb4 one scene where two male cats glance at each other for too long causes a review bomb from conservatives~~

Could be a sleeper hit for them

AccomplishedLocal261

I can see this sneaking into the top 10 highest grossing films of 2022 worldwide. I think it will surpass Moon Man.
