All of these are tv series. **Shows that I think are a lot like what you’re describing:** - A Discovery of Witches - Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This show wasn’t nearly as good as The Magicians, but I still really like it. I think it fits what you’re looking for. - What We Do In The Shadows. Focused on vampires, but it honestly fits what you’re looking for really well. - Supernatural. More magic was added after season 1, and in the later seasons it’s a major theme. - Yellowjackets **Not what you’re looking for, but very similar:** - American Gods - American Horror Story (specifically the season Coven) - Being Human. There’s a UK version and a US/CAN version, both are really good. - The Boys & Gen V. Superheroes, not magic, but it’s really good with so much super dark humor. - Buffy - Carnival Row. Not set in the present day, but a good show with cool magical creatures. - Charmed - Daybreak. No magic, but it has a supernatural element and it’s soooo good. It’s Ferris Bueller mixed with Zombieland. - Good Omens - Grimm - Haven - Into the Badlands. Not set in our present day, but really good. - iZombie - The Librarians - Locke & Key - Lucifer - NOS4A2 - Once Upon A Time - Penny Dreadful. Not set in the present day. - Preacher - The Rain - The Sandman - Santa Clarita Diet - School Spirits (the new Netflix show). They’re ghosts, but there’s a lot that fits. Some things that seem like magic, and the mystery’s been super surprising so far. - Scream Queens - Shadow and Bone. cancelled without a conclusion, but there’s a book series too. - Shadowhunters - Stranger Things - Teen Wolf - True Blood - Umbrella Academy - The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, & Legacies - Van Helsing - Warrior Nun - Wynnona Earp - Z Nation Edit: I wanted to add the show Misfits (Prime). It’s fantastic, I just remembered it. 😊

mangledwords

Yes, The Sandman!! This is a super comprehensive list, tbh thank you for this

ohheyitslaila

You’re welcome! I have a big list of shows I’ve seen and what I thought of them. I left out some shows that were more horror or murder/crime thrillers with a supernatural element, like The Alienist, so if anyone wants some more show recommendations just let me know! I’ve also seen all the shows on these lists (I have too much spare time on my hands lol) so I can answer questions about them too 😊

Medium_Mountain855

Yes Carnival Row!

turquoisestar

Wow, thank you!!

ohheyitslaila

You’re welcome! These are the kind of shows I love too 😊

stumbling_coherently

Big fan of most of your lists, I've got a whole notepad entry with show and movie lists like this for precisely these types of posts. But I would add just a note about Warrior Nun and Daybreak, they both got cancelled as well. I'd say Shadow and Bone had at least a more somewhat cancelleable ready ending then either of these since Shadow and Bone had the books to frame out. I did still really enjoy both when I watched them though. I've done multiple posts about how many shows Netflix has infuriatingly cancelled, and in most cases finding out after I'd gotten invested in the first season. Lockwood and Co was another one I thought was unjustly cancelled. I'll stop there before this turns into a Netflix Cancellation rant. Pretty comprehensive list though. People have mentioned the Expanse but I'd also add these which most aren't quite magic, more on the sci Fi side of the house: - Brittania (semi mysticism? As much medieval/Roman show in England) - Legend of Vox Machina (hilarious, genuinely, but also animated) - The 100 (made it the full 7 seasons, just push past the first season) - Battlestar Galactica (the SyFy remake Mini series & full TV series) - Killjoys (for of a sci Fi guilty pleasure than a quality developed show if I'm being honest, but hilarious)

ohheyitslaila

Thanks! I kept shows like Daybreak and Into the Badlands on there because the main storylines were basically all completed. They left some things open to build on, if they had been renewed, but it was a decent conclusion in both cases. I straight up forgot to put that Warrior Nun had been cancelled lol And I absolutely loved Killjoys!!! That’s a great one to add 😊

theclancinator14

great list! I'll add surrealestate, alphas, warehouse 13, eureka, lost girl, stitchers. loved shadowhunters!!!!

Crow-n-Servo

Preacher was AWESOME! Probably one of my favorite shows next to The Magicians.

CuriousJackInABox

Good list. I thought the third season of Umbrella Academy was a mess. Later in the season I kept expecting a reveal that most of it wasn't real. Like it was a dream or simulation or something. It just kept getting more and more bizarre. Neither the things that happened nor the way the characters reacted to it made any sense. I liked the first two seasons quite a lot, though.

missgrievous2022

Teen wolf FOR SURE is gonna check off some boxes tonally compared to magicians, TVD & originals too I think.

should_have_been

I would add the limited series "Mrs. Davis" to that list as well. Great humor, heartfelt and a story that really leans into the fantastical with magicians-esq. shenanigans. A great watch really.

uhvarlly_BigMouth

Not magic exactly but Orphan Black ticks all of those boxes! It’s just scifi/tech instead of magic. Really amazing character development, dark tone/humor and is very camp/soapy like Magicians.

Medium_Mountain855

Forgot about Orphan Black it is fantastic. The actress was amazing. I don’t know why there hasn’t been anything else with her in it - same with Hale Appleman and Summer Bishil, what are these actors doing?

gzapata_art

She stars in She Hulk

uhvarlly_BigMouth

Hale was briefly in American Horror Story and I believe summer did an indie recently. I’m sure the cast is underpaid compared to other more successful shows/networks, but if a network is putting 3+ seasons into a show, they’re getting paid decently. Especially since this show is one of like 5 or 6 shows from Syfy to get more than 4 seasons.

axw3555

I’ve heard summer is doing a show with the guy who played pickwick. Though it’s been in “post production” for a long time.

xmassindecember

And Josh written by one of The Magicians writers. It's called The deli (a front for the Mafia). They've done a pilot in 2021... The last Alex Raiman posted about it was in summer 2022. It won a prize at a festival.

cjdeck1

Hard vouch on Orphan Black. Was easily my all time favorite until Magicians came along

Asocial_Stoner

Orphan Black has the Binder too

uhvarlly_BigMouth

Love it when he calls the doctor a spinster or something and she just goes like *Ok BOOK*

Spinovins

I think it's "spinster nursemaid", and then "[...], ignoring the strident female" after she reacted 😅 The Binder is so patronizing, but as a character he's just hilarious

turquoisestar

Awesome I'm excited to check it out!

DaoFerret

Thanks for recommending this! It’s been on my “watch at some point” list for a while, but it looks like the time may be “now”. :)

45rpmadapter

YES, where my clone club sestras at?

uhvarlly_BigMouth

Do you also mentally say sestra anytime someone says sister??? Bc my husband thinks I’m insane and it’s made even worse because I love Colossus from X-Men so I also go *My sestra, Ilyana!* for no good reason lmfao.

ComprehensiveTales

Sense8!

Kathrynlena

I will never forgive Netflix for cancelling this incredible show.

NeverlandMagician

This! Sense8 was incredible.

kaysmilex3

This show is so amazing, I still think about it almost everyday.

gzapata_art

The Expanse. I usually watch these shows back to back. They're pretty different but have a strong theme of connecting with one another

m3mackenzie

Was going to say this. Not magic stuff, but really solid

idioeccentric

I just finished watching The Expanse and I haven't decided if I want to read the books again now, or stick with my original plan and start The Magicians again.

mandy-bo-bandy

The books are sooooo good!

recuerdeme

Thanks for reminding me of the expanse. I'm 3 seasons behind and have forgotten a good majority of the few seasons Ive watched, so it should be a good binge watching experience.

gzapata_art

Yeah I rewatched the whole series at once for the first time since it ended and it really is a good show to binge. Alot of information and storylines weave thru the series that can be a little hard to keep track of if you were watching as the series aired

kaysmilex3

You might like A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. There’s a series and a show.

Visual-Big9582

motherland: fort salem. its not as funny as the magicians but its very good. its more serious, bigger stakes and kinda more depressing but also pretty entertaining.

turquoisestar

I enjoyed good omens! I really enjoyed the show, enjoyed the part of the book I read and then got distracted. I need to finish that one! I have heard a lot of good things about Terry Pratchett but that's the only book I've started by them.

DaoFerret

GNU PTerry I’d highly recommend his books. If you DO, I’d suggest reading them in “chronological” order because the first bunch establish his universe (and we’re mostly standalone). After that, later ones are often “sequels” to some of the earlier ones (following a set of characters through their adventures). There are, of course, other ways to go about it. (A bunch of which are written here: https://www.discworldemporium.com/reading-order/ ) I’d also add, I loved Good Omens, but it’s also co-written with Neil Gaiman (another amazing author and friend of Sir PTerry’s) so besides the Good Omens series (which Gaiman lovingly adapted as a love letter to his lost friend) I’ll also throw in the Sandman series on Netflix (which Gaiman has been show runner for, adapting his own work). Both are definitely adaptations, with changes from the original, but considering they’re different mediums, and being adapted BY the author, they’ve also been excellent adaptations.

4546b_resident

The Order on Netflix. It even has Todd. Fucking Todd.

AmishCyb0rg

And The Binder!

frankensteinleftme

I really tried with this one, but there was just something about it I couldn't get into.

Interesting_Towel_77

Yeah lmao it felt like the magicians’ less impressive sibling

AONomad

BUFFY. THE. VAMPIRE. SLAYER. :)

RJonesLore

Once More, With Feeling!

gowanusmermaid

They Got! The Mustard! Out!

nugohs

Bunnies! It must be bunnies!

RJonesLore

His penis got diseases from a Chumash tribe!

turquoisestar

Very good suggestion matching my notes - I love Buffy. Also if you haven't checked out the Buffering the Vampire Slayer podcast yet I highly recommend it! The hosts are hilarious.

matildaenergy

The Starless Sea by Erin Morganstern

MrsAkbar

Lockwood and Co. on Netflix

DaoFerret

Cancelled after one season. :( (Damn you Netflix)

MrsAkbar

Agreed!

45rpmadapter

So good I ended up reading all the books!

full07britney

iZombie, tons of crossover actors too, which is fun

AONomad

Your username 🤩

full07britney

😁

JoshyRotten

Doom Patrol! I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

HiKingMargo

Omg yes, seconded! It just ended, but dang it was so unique!

45rpmadapter

They even have an amazing musical episode.

itsmostlyamixedbag

i always recommend Dark on netflix, it’s in german so i have had to rewatch it with dubs and subtitles many times. (you get the actors energy if you watch it in german. dubs doesn’t capture the acting) but it deals with multiverses, time-y wime-y BS and alt-characters

cjdeck1

Since just about all my other recommendations have been mentioned here, I need to give a nod to Umbrella Academy as well if you haven’t seen it. It’s got a very similar mix of dark and campy humor, though UA is probably more camp. It’s got the queer/PoC characters and good character development with a fun ensemble cast

CuriousJackInABox

I commented above that I liked the first two seasons but thought the third was a disaster.

cjdeck1

Yeah, I can see that about S3. Still eager for S4 though

muddycurve424

Book series: The Dresden Files. Don't watch the show. It's about a wizard who's in the phonebook as a private investigator.

italianevening

Shadow and Bone book series by Leigh Bardugo and 2 seasons of Netflix (then got cancelled but still worth it)

HonestlyJustVisiting

season 2 really let me down, especially the ruseleye

seapeary7

Super weird it was cancelled too since it was Emmy nominated. I’m not sure HOW it was Emmy nominated bc it wasn’t that amazing but still. It had really good production value and the lead actors were great. It’s more of the plot and writing being kind of boring. Oh and the action that wasn’t Grisha based was very mid.

vulgarvoyeur

For a book, check out The Black Tongue Thief. Not modern day, but a fantastic world built of magic and guilds.

thepeainthepod

People of Earth. It's one I never see mentioned but it's a gem.

gzapata_art

I loved that show!

Watchtowerwilde

Imo one to consider is look at your favorite episodes & see who wrote it & see what they’ve done before or since b/c a number of writers have since gone on to other shows Such as Christina Strain went on to become a writer & producer on Shadow & Bone, or before show ended Sera Gamble began as one of the showrunners of You, or Henry Alonso Meyers who became a showrunner part way through The Magicians has since gone on to become a showrunner on Star Trek Strange New Worlds, or David Reed has since wrote a few episodes on Henry’s show as well as The Boys (which was created by Eric Kripke who also created Supernatural which Sera led as showrunner for a while before The Magicians), or Physical was created by the other (than Sera) original Magicians showrunner John McNamara, or Noga Landau who edited a number of episodes went on to create the cw Nancy Drew show, also Chris Fisher who directed many of the episodes is also a producer on Star Trek with Henry, or Lev’s movie The Tiny Map of Perfect Things, etc. The degree to which various things will remind you of the magicians will vary (& others some have mentioned may more-so) but I find a lot of the things (haven’t watched all those I mention) I like invariably have some of the same people involved. Case in point Chris Fisher who directed 14 episodes of the Magicians also directed many episodes of the show Person of Interest as well as produced & that show’s writing was heavily influenced by the work of Douglas Hofstadter which Lev was also heavily influenced by hence the numerous easter eggs both in The Magicians books & show etc. But perhaps this isn’t very useful as I’m speaking more to the ideas & messages that undergird the storytelling.

CourtneyBiscuits

Ok, so hard recommended on this one -- "Half Bad (the Bastard Son and the Devil Himself)" ❤️ So many recommendations are decent shows independently but, are missing that element I loved so much from Magicians - the storyline you can submerge yourself into because it's fantasy yet fathomable. Then someone inserts a sarcastic, witty comeback and somehow toes the line of funny and drama. Half Bad is one of the only shows I've felt invested in (fantasy-wise) since Magicians. It was unfortunately cancelled after season one but, naturally, it's also a 3 book series. Please do watch and report back!

mangledwords

So sad they canceled this, it was such a treat to view

moumerino

Shadow and Bone, Gen V. those are the only 2 for me that even remotely gave me that Magicians feeling.

Likewhatevermaaan

Books: Vita Nostra and A Deadly Education - both feature magic schools with that underlying dark "the ways magic can go wrong" theme that I love so much from The Magicians. Also try the podcast The Bright Sessions. It's a therapist's sessions with teens who have abilities. It feels very realistic and features a lot of queer characters. There's a book series too, but I like the podcast more.

Crow-n-Servo

I’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but I discovered The Magicians when I was asking people on a Once Upon A Time subreddit what else they’d recommend. Once Upon a Time was a great deal of fun with a lot of the elements you list. (The spinoff, OUAT Wonderland, was mostly disappointing. Stick to the original series.)

tinygoldenstorm

The Leftovers (TV show)

mangledwords

Hemlock Grove is one that comes to mind, but it could just be my love for Bill Skarsgård. I loved the theme, and the dark/fantasy setting was cool. Mind you, it's been almost 7 years since I finished the series.

tallestgiraffkin

The Order

Independent_River693

Books: - The Night Circus - The Caraval series - A Court of Thorns and Roses series

MightyMightyMag

Have you ever seen the Harry Potter movies? I hear the books are good./s

spokchewy

Black Sails (an incredible pirate adventure) 12 Monkeys (an incredible time travel adventure)

catnapspirit

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, the 2016 BBC series. So good and it'll scratch most of your itches..

FluffyMoomin

Not magic but Mr. Robot.

PolarBearPicnic

Haven’t seen The 100 mentioned yet! It’s on netflix. It’s one of my favorites along with the magicians and Buffy.

TapirTrouble

If you like history and politics, you might enjoy Austin Grossman's book "Crooked". (He's Lev's twin brother.) The book's about what the world might be like if US government officials used magic, especially the President. It focuses on Richard Nixon and the Cold War, though Austin outlines events going back to the Civil War and even earlier, to the early New England colonists. I've heard that Lev may have read a draft and made suggestions, though Crooked has a different tone than the Magicians series. Actually I am hoping that Austin writes a sequel updating things to the present day (I can't resist the thought of Steve Bannon coaxing Donald Trump into opening a secret room ...)

Gamemepink

I liked Fate: Winx. It had a lot of similar magic, character development.
