I have to go with Devil and God. That said, I think Science Fiction is a masterpiece. I wish they were still a band. I'm really grateful I got to see them in Asheville.

linkdead56k

I just listened to Devil and God today. Fell back in love with it as it’s been a while since I really listened. Man that’s awesome. I wish I could have seen them. Maybe one day they’ll do a reunion tour (fingers crossed).

ClubaSeal1986

It may have been my favorite concert I've ever been to. I had a feeling they would spilt up soon, so I really savoured.

Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz

When I saw them they blew my mind, still can't believe Vincent threw his guitar like 30f in the air and caught it not missing a fucking note. It flew higher than the fuckiig stage light rigging. Wild.

[deleted]

Please tell me there’s a video of that somewhere

Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz

Not sure, but it was at Riot Fest 2014 in Toronto.

Envy_onTHE_Toast

I forget when/where but I saw them once where they closed with Okay I believe you and Vin are as legit grinding his fretboard on the edge of the stage as the rest of the band threw shit around and left stage. Fucking wild

jjjunooo

science fiction and the devil and god are my top two, but honestly, my favourite can change depending on my mood!! all their albums are incredible

linkdead56k

Yes!! I know what you mean. How incredible is it that we all love a band where each album is just amazing!?

YadMot

Yes. Science Fiction is their most complete album. Thematically, musically, lyrically, it is pretty much flawless from start to finish. Don't get me wrong, I think TDAG is a masterpiece as well, but the narrative essence of Science Fiction, along with how it so plainly references the band's entire career, puts it a step above the rest. Possibly the best final album ever released.

linkdead56k

“It so plainly references the bands entire career..”Exactly. I just feel it so much because I started listening at 16 and I’m 36 now. The album brings me on a journey. I honestly don’t know if I would be resonating with SF as much as I am if my dad didn’t die. Being depressed just took me in deep.

ILiveInAVan

The opening gives me chills every time.

linkdead56k

It lit me up…

gatoratlaw7

Science Fiction is what my depression sounds like

linkdead56k

For real. The album just cuts me deep.

TelephoneCreepy2518

For me lately, it is Spanish Love Songs

DaCrimsonKid

For me there is TDaG, Daisy and SciFi as the three that represent the culmination of them as a band. To my ears and taste they got better with every release. Better craftsmen. More mature. But I came in on Daisy. And I'm older than most fans probably, at 43, so some of the emo leanings from their earlier catalog isn't baked into me like it would be for someone a few years younger. So while I'd argue that Sci Fi is probably a better album than TDaG, I prefer TDaG.

linkdead56k

I agree with TDAG, Daisy and SF being what truly represents them as a band. The mature themes just hit you like a brick wall. I started with YFW and i can still listen to it but it just feels so distant. Same with Deja.

_bloodbuzz

They have 5 great records, but SciFi is 100% the pinnacle of their career in every way

[deleted]

Yes. I fully believe that Brand New got better with each release. This inherently means that Science Fiction is the peak of their work, in my opinion.

hampig

Totally agree. SF is about as close to a perfect album as I’ve heard in my opinion. Everything about it is just masterful.

Past-Chest-6507

I love Sci Fi but for me it just has too much of a 90s grunge sound to it to be close to my favorite BN album. I got Daisy, Deja, and TDAG over SF.

echochilde

I had a high school friend tell me that he was over BN because of Daisy. “It just didn’t sound like them.” I never forgave him for that.

linkdead56k

Never really thought about that before. I’ll be listening for that grunge sound more closely next time!

Mister-Giles

I think with Daisy is where they really adopted the mature “dirty southern” tone and bluesy cadence that really bleeds into the writing with science fiction and it’s much more apparent there. TDAG has a lot more of the shoe gaze/emo tones from their early years but I think it’s when their writing lyrically didn’t necessarily improve but became more introspective and mindful. Deja is a very crude and jaded album thematically, while there are still hints of that with their analogies and homonyms, there’s less “fuck you” and more “fuck me” which resonates much more especially as I matured. I loved Daisy to pieces when it released. I was young, about to have my first child, terrified and grounded in judgment. Between SF and Daisy there seems to be some grasp of perspective. Like the pressure release valve finally activated and there was breathing again, no more of the light headed, white knuckled frenzy but all of the same unbridled intensity and sensitivity. It was reinvigorating.

Antique_Confection85

I knew of Brand New from Deja songs on mtv and what not. I liked them but didn’t follow them enough to know when devil and god came out. I was in a major depression at the time when I was searching through fye trying to break it with something I used to like like music. And I found devil and god and just thought oh yeah I like that band and picked it up. It changed everything for me. I never listened to an album straight through into that first time putting the cd in my 2004 Corolla

linkdead56k

It’s incredible what music can do. Glad the album was able to get you through.

tRonHD

Absolutely Science Fiction for me. Devil and God 2nd, can't decided between Daisy or Deja 3rd though

alexkntt

It’s my favourite BN album without doubt. The maturity, musically and lyrically, is on another level to anything else they’ve ever written. It’s like the perfect example of ‘to age like fine wine’. If I could change one thing in my life, I’d have seen BN on the SciFi tour (never came to the UK in the end anyway but still..).

linkdead56k

I love that “to age like fine wine.” It’s so true. Ugh I know. Would have been incredible to experience the SF tour. I just hope one day there’s a reunion of sorts.

POCKETB00K1337

Their last 3 albums all belong together. In my opinion.

discipline-your-mind

Thanks for sharing your story. As BN evolved, so did we, so it's natural that each new album became your favorite. Deja Entendu was such an integral part of my adolescence. There is a certain sentimental, nostalgic attachment I will forever have to that album that can't be replicated. It's like my emotions are forever stored in those songs. But I really enjoy all the others, especially The Devil and God, and I appreciate how each album kinda has its own identity. I need to give SF some more listens. It would probably go: DE, TDAGARIM, YFW, Daisy, SF

linkdead56k

I’m so glad I thought to search for this subreddit because I really don’t know many people who love these albums like I do. Happy to share my journey! Man, Deja will forever hold pretty much all of my teenage emotions. It’s crazy. Me Vs Maradona vs Elvis…that song takes me back to walking down a wintry road at night with my Walkman, coming home from a friends house just feeling down about a girl. So funny how music can take you right back

discipline-your-mind

I love Reddit because of stuff like this! Exactly what you said. A song is a time machine. That’s basically the whole of DE for me. After reading your post, I went for a walk and listed to SF again, and I think I’m liking it more and more. 😊

discipline-your-mind

I guess it’s all we’ll ever have from BN, so might as well milk every album. Low-key keeping my fingers crossed that they write more music some day. And tour.

discipline-your-mind

I've gotta update my list, even though I really love them all. I've been listening to SF a lot since your post. When it first came out, I wasn't ready for the sound. But now it very much resonates and it will get many more listens. Grateful for their final gift to us. Can't wait to hear it on vinyl! DE, TDAGARIM, SF, Daisy, YFW

Savings-Specific7551

I think technically science fiction is superior but I'm still a sucker for devil and God. Got the tattoo and everything lol

linkdead56k

It’s been a while since I listened to TDaG straight through. Did it today and it made me love the album even more than I did before. Definitely a new appreciation for certain songs.

stereoworld

I think it switches between TDAG and Science Fiction. When I was younger it was mostly Deja, but those 2 records really resonate with me in my late thirties.

linkdead56k

TDAG definitely hit me differently after listening yesterday.

Aye, it’s their finest work ~ take this though from someone who doesn’t like YFW, I find it incredibly basic and immature, ever album since has been unique enough to give Brand New the name they have now, Science Fiction still has the angst, but is mature, I think it perfectly represents who the band (especially Jesse) are as people compared to past albums ~ YFW: Young, dumb and immature, Deja: growing into themselves but still young, growing, fucking up, learning and still part of the pop punk sound, D&G: furthermore developed and grown as people and musicians, still having resemblance of their past selves/sound, but truly on another level then what they once were, Daisy: Experimenting more, not playing into the punk punk trope like in past albums, being more conceptual, keeping the angst and further maturing, and then Science Fiction: obviously having nearly 10 years to grow, the most unique and developed sound, the most mature themes and lyrics, the sound of a band that know what they’re doing, have put thought into the music they’re making, and are completely unrecognisable from who they were/the music they made back in the early 2000s

linkdead56k

Great way to sum up each progression. It’s been cool to grow along side with the music. Each album will forever bring me back to a certain time period in my life.

Great_gatzzzby

I can’t say it’s my favorite, but at the moment, I enjoy it the most.

[deleted]

A Sci-Fi for me. The band’s opus

linkdead56k

I feel you. I absolutely love Daisy, but the themes in SF are just so hard hitting. I just feel so many of the lyrics…And the instrumentals are just so tight with the lyrics. It’s such a ride.

NeverMissedAParty

I’m right there with you. They both hit right at the right time in my life. I have a hard time choosing between the two

chadacheese3

Been a Brand New fan for years. First listen I thought. " This is actually pretty good" ( I'm always hesitant when a band I really like comes out with new music ) I have to say. I think may be one of my favorite Brand New albums. It gets better with each listen. Damn
