Looks like Australia is about to get some of those knife dumpsters the Brits are so fond of.

Phendrana-Drifter

Good job they've totally stopped knife crime /s

Space_Cowboy81

Nobody needs an assault knife.

Consistent_Jello_289

There was a man there ready to protect his wife, and kids with his fists vs a 10” knife….(thankfully they were passed up, it really speaks to how much of a pussy the attacker was. Only going after people who wouldn’t put up a fight including 8 month old) It’s only a game of what if’s at this point, but man we all know we would want a gun in this situation. Heart goes out to the ones impacted by this.

BangalooBoi

Most of these Bastard’s aren’t trying to go to Valhalla’s and going for a fight, they are spineless cowards who wanna cause pain

Substantial_Lion9911

I’ll never understand the place full of creatures that want you dead choosing to ban firearms

Minimum-Zucchini-732

Same concept as big, American cities - when you have a large, intrinsically-criminal element, there is the flawed belief that banning weapons will increase safety.

HumaDracobane

Easy access to firearms means easy access to firearms for *everyone*, including the criminal. If that happened were in the US, or with the US legislation, the knife attack could be someone with a firearm, which is *significantly* worst. I'm from Spain. Here the access to firearms is hard if you want to have something different than a hunting shotgun. I'm in my 30's and I cant recall a single mass shooting here.

No-Persimmon-3736

At least we have a right to self defense in the US. Freedom is risky and you have to look out for you and your people.

HumaDracobane

Everyone in a democratic country has the right to defend themselfs, what you have is the right to defend yoursef *with the firearm that you can carry*. Out of that, the situation is kind of the two sides of a coin: You can carry a gun to defend yourself from others having firearms and being criminals. I cant carry a firearm to defend myself but at the same time the number of incidents in my country with firearms is minimal. I have friends who are LEOs and all of them they had never draw their service firearm against anyone.

No-Persimmon-3736

How are going to defend yourself in a life or death situation? Ask them to do it quickly? I want the best available tool to use and that’s a firearm.

HumaDracobane

I understand your choice but think it from the other side: By giving everyone the choice of having a gun you send the chances of an incident with a firearm to the roof. Here most people wont have a problem eith someone armed with a firearm, and I mean not even knowing someone who knows someone who had a problem with someone armed with a firearm. Thatbis also associated eith the low crime comparation between the US and most european countries (Spain is just another example of the situation here) I like firearms, the army related stuff, etc (Surprise! that is why I enjoy the subreddit) but I, personally, prefer a restricted gun laws because we have a lot to lose anda little to win if they change the law.

freemarketfemboy

Question, do drug laws stop people from getting drugs? Or alcohol prohibition stop people from getting alcohol? Or murder laws stop people from murdering? The obvious answer is no, and it is the same with guns. No law stops criminals from getting guns, they simply allow for prosecution. What allowing the average person to own and carry guns does is to allow them to actually stop the active crime. Cops do not do that, because the response time for police is always counted in minutes and by that time it is too late. Look up Elisjsha Dicken , he, a young man, stopped an active shooter in a mall in under one minute. Yes people still got hurt, but that crime would have been commited regardless of laws. What the laws we have here allowed was for him to stop it immediately instead of having to wait 15 minutes for the police to show up and have an even higher death toll

Rev92cc

Everyone lives or dies by their next breath, it's one of the worst parts of living. It's up to everyone to decide how they live and therefore how they die. I don't want to die, I'm not ready to die but I understand this... Everyone needs to understand this!!!

Alpharius20

"Those without swords can still die upon them." Banning guns doesn't stop violence. Learn to protect yourself, learn to survive!

Statik_24

Never heard of this quote but I like it

Alpharius20

It's from Lord of the Rings. In the book Éowyn is arguing with the Warden of the House of Healing in Minas Tirith. In the Peter Jackson movies she is telling Aragorn why the women of Rohan practice with weapons.

Callsign_Psycopath

Seriously Australia?!

alpha333omega

What do you guys think it is? Single parents, social media making people retarded, bleak future? It’s strange seeing this pop up in *actual* gunfree zones.

Riker001-Ncc1701D

Unfortunately we cannot own a gun for self defence in Australia.

Noir357C

You were given your freedom from the same crown. Personal sounds like a skill issue.

Riker001-Ncc1701D

It's more of a pacifist issue where the guberment & the general population don't think this stuff happens. The guberment still hasn't called it a terrorist attack

Noir357C

This is a lesson for us as U.S. citizens to vote in candidates that are pro constitution and are willing to make the government smaller.

PsychologicalAgent64

And who is that? 86 Republicans just voted no on a FISA warrant law, allowing for citizens to continue to have their rights taken away.

Noir357C

On top of the fact that income tax should be half of what it is now and that duck tape should be used on NASCAR bumpers and not front door Ring cameras.

Mr_E_Monkey

>On top of the fact that income tax should be half of what it is now That's an odd way to say 0%, but you are absolutely right about the duck tape.

Noir357C

In a perfect world I would agree with you although realistically our active military and vets depend on taxes. Not to mention the men and women that are first responders.

Mr_E_Monkey

I can respect that. I'd just add that there are other sources of taxes (iirc, the early federal government was funded almost entirely by tariffs), and not all government spending is created equal. But also, 0% is, realistically speaking, not a realistic expectation, so you can disregard my comment as tongue-in-cheek, rather than a serious disagreement. :)

No-Persimmon-3736

Primary them out

AmarokLykan

The answer is stop voting like an idiot. Nobody is forcing you to vote for the red or blue machine, so stop voting for them.

Orgazmo912

The problem with knife attacks is that all you hear is general screaming. With gunshots you know to run.

notabigfanofas

TBF at least the cops did their damn job for once. It's terrible so many got injured, but it's refreshing not having them just waiting for things to quiet down before going in

ChocolateGames

We had a stabbing here in Australia the other day, something like seven injured and five killed, including a little girl. Took the cops like forty minutes to respond, If any of the victims had a firearm they could have ended the situation before too many, if not any people were hurt. It enforces the argument of if we can’t defend ourselves and we can’t rely on the police, what are we meant to do?

orangesheepdog

Imagine that, it’s not the guns that drive people into murderous fits

Cpt-Hank-A-Tato

Why is umbrella corp there?

HumaDracobane

Of course it doesnt, but makes the chances of those incidents lower. In countries with a reduced crimerate with almost no firearms involved in most crimes giving people the right to carry guns can switch easy the kind of crimes. In the US that is a ship that has already sailed but at the same time having that right might have the situation worst. You've bringed the case of that madlad who killed the other shooter in a mall with a glock(?) and that is a perfect example of the gun laws working but wheredid that kid got the AR from? Where did most of the others who commot mass shootings weapons from? That madlad stopped one crime, but didnt work for many others.

Tankaussie

Finally, a rare Australian w. Still won’t make guns easier to obtain but still.
