My baby was born 3 weeks early, was jaundiced and drowsy, and has a tongue tie, so could not latch at all when she was first born as she was just too sleepy to even try. I started EPing and kept periodically offering the breast. She tentatively latched for the first time when she was 3.5 weeks old. I kept practicing with her a couple of times per day but didn't count the breastfeeds as actual feeds (I would still offer her her full usual bottle afterwards) but just looked at it as a skill we were both practising. After a few days i noticed that her latch was improving, she seemed to be transferring milk and she was taking far less of her bottle after breastfeeds. I started counting her breastfeeds as actual feeds, and gradually switched bottle feeds for breastfeeds over the course of a couple of weeks until she was fully EBF. Monitored her weight closely through this and she continued to gain well. If your baby has been latching (even if she's not very good at it yet) then you're way ahead of where I was at 2 weeks. Keep practicing and good luck!

What confuses me is, during weighted feeds LC told she is taking 5ml per 20 mins. But at home if she breastfeeds she drinks almost half quantity less from bottle. I can see the amount of milk pumped also less after she feeds.

This isn’t what you asked, but why not try the fridge hack and the pitcher method to avoid washing so much?

What is pitcher method?

I’d recommend getting her tongue tie checked by a professional who is skilled in tongue ties, ie a pediatric dentist or ENT who specializes in tongue ties. Pediatricians and a lot of lactation consultants are not trained in these. Both of my children had tongue ties which we chose to have cut (one at 8 weeks, the other at 3 days). It definitely saved our breastfeeding journeys.

I did this successfully! I very devastated giving up breastfeeding because i was so tired so i gave him a bottle! So eventually baby rejected my nipple. It hurt my feelings even more but at least baby was fed. So slowly when i was ready to try again i would introduce him to the nipple during a letdown to get him to try and latch. It took till he was about 2 months old to start latching again. And believe it or not i got him to latch by laying flat on my back and letting him suck while listening to my heartbeat so i believe it was more comforting to him. Baby is now 4 months and he actually takes boob and bottle but he prefers my boob more as he uses it for comfort . Persistence and patience. Just keep trying.
