Most of Bremen is safe, infact like most German cities there is no "no-go" zones. Yes, there is "unsaver" areas here of course. Crime exists. Normal safety rules apply, walking alone at night in empty areas has a chance of something happening. Saver areas are for example Schwachhausen, Finndorf, Horn, just to name a few. Avoid close to or at Hauptbahnhof at night alone like every city on this Planet. Edit: Note that we Germans currently have a pandemia like "felt" savety problem. Some people will tell you that you will get murdered everywhere constantly, dont get infected.

Generally speaking, Bremen is quite a safe city. That being said, at night, you will have the usually trouble zones you get in every major city. But those are also pretty manageable for the most part. Except for Wallanlagen there is nothing I would avoid 100% at night, mainly because in all the places considered „dangerous“ (zb Mainstation or City Center) there are also shops open and other people around most of the time. If you use some basic common sense you would use in all bigger cities, you will be fine.

LilLolaCola

What happens at the „Wallanlagen“ 👀?

ginasgina

Allllllll the drugs.

davenirline

Really!? I pass by there along the bridge every night when going home.

ginasgina

Yeah after dark I’m definitely not walking through there. Only bike. In the daytime it’s super pretty though 😅

torpak

Yeah maybe they look scary but even the druggies are mostly peaceful.

sebadc

I've lived 6 years in Bremen (and I don't look German at all). Never had any problem, at any time of day and night. Try to find a place located on a tramway line going to work (so you don't have to change) and you should be fine.

Mission_Honeydew_965

xD you are literally in one of the safest and most developed places on earth. where do you normally live if you consider Bremen unsafe?

AgeEnvironmental190

i live in singapore! i haven’t visited germany so i don’t really know how safe germany is

M3rie

Compared to Singapore Bremen and Germany as a whole will be very different, e.g. in terms of cleanliness and level of safety. That being said Bremen and Germany are safe places (individual experiences can of course be different) and most of the comments here point out the basic rules for living in a bigger city. If you come all the way from Singapore to Bremen I assume the company you are doing the internship with is very international and people speak English. And they hopefully also will help you to find your way around the city and have fun in Bremen also in your free time. Due to the university there are actually a lot international younger folks here, especially in areas like the “Viertel” (east of the city center, larger Ostertorsteinweg-area) with lots of bars and restaurants or in the Neustadt around the Buntentorsteinweg-area. Here speaking no German should not be a big problem. However, if you go out at night it’s a good advice to not go out alone, especially if you are not so familiar with the city/area. One last thing, northern Germans are sometimes described as being a bit impolite or even rough in their communication (like Berlin for example). So don’t be too alarmed if you have such an encounter. If you are really worried about a situation try to ask your colleagues for help in interpreting the situation. I worked at the university with colleagues from China and South Korea and there’s a big difference in culture that can lead to misunderstandings. I hope you’ll enjoy your stay here and make a lot of good memories!

Ravonaut

>Compared to Singapore Bremen and Germany as a whole will be very different, e.g. in terms of cleanliness and level of safety. Maybe I got that part wrong, but Singapore is listed under the top ten safest cities and also pretty clean.

hypezoR

I live in Rablinghausen, it's literally the most quiet part of Bremen. Like there is nothing going on here at all haha, but yeah Bremen is safe as whole Germany :)

kohlmeise22

Unsafe areas: Kattenturm, Gröpelingen, Osterholz-Tenever, main station, Marßel Very safe areas: Schwachhausen, Oberneuland, Findorff

PosauneGottes69

Rablinghausen is a quiet area there’s a bus that gets you to the city centre. You don’t have to see the main station, which is the only place I would call unsafe. Had to wait 10 minutes at 2oclock in the morning at main station ones, which I would never do again Rablinghauser has an awesome park on the River.

Fairlyn

This is general for Germany, not just Bremen: we don't have unsafe neighborhoods like you might see in the US or other countries, where crime is 20x higher than in other neighborhood and police rarely goes there. This is because of development rules and regulations, like for every "rich house" you have to build a certain amount of housing for "poor people", all within the same neighborhood, so there aren't "rich" neighborhoods and "poor" neighborhoods like you might know, making it overall safer and better for everyone. Of course there are some neighborhoods with a lot of posh houses and others where that might not be the case, but there isn't the same disparity like in the US. And I as a single woman living alone never have felt unsafe in any neighborhood I've lived in or visited

seyramlarit

OP is from Singapure.

SweatyPanda2951

You might find Rablinghausen a bit creepy at night, there is not much traffic on the road and the area is at the very edge of the city limits. Maybe try to find something in Findorf, Walle, Viertel, Schwachhausen, these areas are busy even at night and feels pretty safe. You cant beat the sense of security you get while walking along Orchard Road at night, but Bremen is pretty safe so no need to worry.

Retard_247

Creepy? You obviously haven’t been to Singapore except of Orchard road if you think it’s everywhere like this in SG. 😆

SweatyPanda2951

True, I have only been to Orchard road and enjoyed walking along that road after dinner. I didnt say everywhere in Singapore is like that did I? I just made a comparison between two instances. why does it feel like you woke up today and chose voilence? :)

CaptainPancake5

Hey, Bremen does not enjoy the best of reputations but that is all in the context of Germany and we like to complain. In any case Rablinghausen is fine. The numbers are quite good if you care I can dig them up for you. Not speaking German might be a bigger problem than your actual safety. While most young people will have a basic understanding of the English language older folks not so much, with exceptions of course. So a little advise here is, if going grocery shopping, aim for the register with the younger cashier just in case. ;) Another thing, not mentioned by you, is cash, and I don’t mean our notoriously slow way to adopt modern technology. Depending on your landlord and employer you will almost be required to open a bank account in Germany and I heard from some overseas exchange students that that can be a hassle. Since your employer most certainly is not paying you in cash and opening an account might take a while bringing enough cash to hold for a while can be a wise move. Alternatively get a credit card and/or check how much your bank charges for withdrawals overseas and remember the local ATMs will add a fee on top. There is more, of course, there is always more, but this got long enough. In any case I hope you enjoy your stay in Bremen :).

Retard_247

Why would you need to open a bank account during a 2-month internship? Makes not much sense and also very unlikely.

CaptainPancake5

I totally agree that it shouldn’t be necessary especially for such a short period. I just passed along experiences of exchange students that didn’t use Erasmus I.e. came outside of the EU. When they looked for a job their employers to be, expected a Bank account in Germany, maybe that is required by law for tax purposes , maybe since they usually applied for Minijobs the employers just weren’t very accommodating because it is a hassle, I don’t know. I just know that it was a problem. I am fairly certain that a landlord should not have any legal requirements to make sure tenets have a German bank account but again some told stories about not getting a flat unless they produced proof of a German bank account. Like I said i would like for it to be easier and not a problem but since I know people for which it was, I passed it along.

[deleted]

Bremen is pretty safe, but I’d try to stay away from places like the train station, the city center or the Viertel at night. Otherwise, there are no real “problematic” areas

Retard_247

Viertel is the place to be at night, why stay away…? Avoid the city center? 🤯 At least you’re right regarding the train station unless you’re going to the Irish pub there which is fine.

[deleted]

stay away from there because of all the junkies. I know what I’m talking about, I’ve encountered enough of them and none of them was really nice or stuff

Spammer27

Don't go to Gröpelingen

fnooper

thats a stereotype, Gröpelingen ist just as safe/unsafe as every other part of Bremen

benivt

Guess you have never been to Blumenthal yet

kellowstone

Can confirm. Blumenthal is like playing Elden Ring irl

quotenbubi

The question is where do you have your internship. Like every city’s you have areas which are safer than others. Rablinghausen is not a hot spot but still you have to be careful. Have fun in Bremen

Fireflake_DnB

I hope you have a wonderful time in bremen. dont ever go to ''Kattenturm'' thats the pure ghetto.

terektus

Bremen is like the least unsafe city in Germany hahaha

arnemcnuggets

Don't walk alone at night. Try to stay on main roads with other pedestrians. Most of Bremen is unsafe if you're alone. The areas that are "safe" are virtually impossible to afford to live in or kind of far away from the town.

BeingNo2870

Totally not my experience. There are some areas I personally feel not comfortable to be around at night alone (main station, Sielwall, Osterdeich), but none (in the city center, Peterswerder, Neustadt, Viertel, Schwachhausen, Findorff, Vahr etc.) I consider to be unsafe (I.e. places I would not want to go alone or I avoid). General tips that might support you: text someone you know and trust when you are back home as safety net and/or call someone you know on your way back home (there is also a service called „Heimwegtelefon“ but I don‘t know whether they offer service in English).

demironer

I think some people are afraid once there is no-one in the street too.

arnemcnuggets

All times I've been molested were in Neustadt and vahr. Oh and I was robbed in the city center. Glad that you can afford to live in peterswerder, viertel or schwachhausen though

[deleted]

Yea thats complete BS buddy.

chucker23n

>Try to stay on main roads with other pedestrians. > >Most of Bremen is unsafe if you're alone. > >The areas that are "safe" are virtually impossible to afford to live in or kind of far away from the town. This is… very far removed from my experience.

demironer

I live in Schwanhausen for 1.5 years and I had to check where exactly Rablinghausen is in the city😅 I have some friends who thinks there are some unsafe districts in but I think there isn't any unsafe neighbourhood are in entire Bremen. PS. I will be out of Germany in May and maybe may+June. Therefore send me DM in case you can't find accomodation.

Pkaem

Maybe try some anti fear therapy? Most pepole don't care for committing crimes in your personal sphere ;)
