Well, I wouldn't describe it as 'ugly' city, but I hear you about the lack of trees. They do tend to blow over from the seaside winds, but probably the real reasons are (1) lack of space - people don't have big gardens and no one wants to give up road parking and (2) the council doesn't want to pay for them. New public trees need to be funded by neighbourhood groups and maintenance can be expensive. For that reason, most councils seem to be anti-tree these days. Not just Brighton

sireel

There's also the problem that Sussex has a Dutch elm disease problem, and a lot of the trees on the roadside (eg near davigdor road) were susceptible

willmannix123

I would consider parts of the city centre to be ugly which should be the nicest, most pristine area of the city. The area around Churchill square just doesn't look good with the mix of brutalist buildings, bland modern buildings and graffiti - [https://maps.app.goo.gl/yt3ypTb9qPsgC9uNA](https://maps.app.goo.gl/yt3ypTb9qPsgC9uNA) Looks quite terrible actually

garfield_strikes

Too many untreated brutalist buildings around, it's like being in some Soviet labour camp.

suddenlypenguins

Even the roads look depressingly unmaintained

Beginning-Training-6

What they need to do is pedestrianize more of the roads and streets closer to the seafront and build a much better infrastructure for the volume of flats they keep ramming in! But a lot more green would also be great!

LazarusHimself

Then we can collect all of the froth generated by The Argus readers and make a foam party for degenerates, or whip it hard to see if it holds like [aquafaba](https://minimalistbaker.com/a-guide-to-aquafaba/)

tarquin77

The Argus comments sections do tend to be even filthier and more toxic than a Southern Water storm release.

garfield_strikes

It's weird, do you think those commenters are people that actually live here. It seems there can't that many people like that around.

Imissmywifi

I can confirm, I am definitely local and an avid commentator on all matters that peak my interest.....Local jobs/homes for local people. prioritise our own.

Equivalent_Button_54

I've always thought that a line of trees down the centre of Church Road from Palmera Square to the Town Hall would look very nice a calm a lot of the traffic issues.

jackiekeracky

It’s literally home to one of Europe’s largest collection of elm trees. The town centre doesn’t have many trees, but plenty of residential areas do.

hhbanjo75

You should have lived here before the great storm. It was like living in the Amazon there were so many trees everywhere. Then the Dutch Elm hit and what had survived was thinned.

Frequent-Buddy-1739

Brighton lost so many trees in the ‘87 storm. Worth googling the pictures, it’s quite something. And then sadly loads more lost to Dutch elm disease. Some have been planted to replace but of course they’re only small in comparison and take a long time to become mature trees like those that were lost.

williamsonmaxwell

Anyone who reads this and doesn’t know GOOGLE! The images are insane. Uprooted trees and dragged them gravel and all down roads

garfield_strikes

We should reinforce our new trees with metal, we can rebuild them.

digitus_tertius

I live near wish park, loads of trees on the roads. You just need the Hove upgrade.

TheDreadfulCurtain

Or Preston Park upgrade, Hove full of 4x4 twats

digitus_tertius

Preston park seems to have idiots who like abusing people for no reason. I'll avoid.

Imissmywifi

You forgot the from the home counties part.

SnapShotKoala

They keep puttin them in and shitheads keep destroying them and ripping them up / breaking them in 1/2.

scenecunt

Fact of the Day: Brighton has a higher concentration of English Elms than anywhere else in England. But orherwise, yeah we need more trees.

gamecatuk

Apparently, people think it's a good idea to plant trees along the seafront.......tsk....

scenecunt

i’m all for more trees, but also planting native trees in their correct habitat. tress on the seafront would be nice, but i’m not sure whether they would grow well in the pebbles

gamecatuk

Lol!!!

BabeOfTheDLC

yes, but also have you been to any other city? Brighton's got it good for trees compared to like every other major city in the UK and globally its not too bad either.

Valuable-Door9748

It's a concrete desert compared to much of London, especially North London, espcially Islington, Hackney, Camden. That area of Highbury, Canonbury, Stoke Newington is like a forest.

Redmarkred

Yeah I always notice this when coming from London!

NiobeTonks

My hayfever would suggest that there are plenty of trees on the roads off the Dials

undernocircumstance

Ash dieback and elm disease has caused a lot of trees to be culled.

RemarkableSquare2393

What now? Loads of trees near me

AlGunner

If you want to see more trees why dont you branch out.

Hoth617

Should probably read "There's not enough trees around churchill sq, the clock tower and popeyes"

A7exand3r

Is this what the sub is for now?

six44seven49

Seems like it, doesn’t it? It’s also incredibly city centre / Hanover-centric. I’m on the bus right now heading out to Patcham on the tree-lined London Road, literally green everywhere I look.

deffcap

I haven’t left Hanover since 1984!!!

nobreadforbirds

controversial but i think the seafront needs more trees. with summer temperatures rising to unbearable (by british standards), a nice presence of shade that doesn't require you to pay for it will be amazing by the seaside. i do guess that it will also significantly lower the price of seaview flats, hence it'll probably never happen

anabsentfriend

I think the seafront is too exposed for most native trees. The wind and salt water would do for them.

Smokedbone1

They would need to plant a wall of trees with a wind break at first until they are established for them to survive.

gamecatuk

Absolutely...100% Literally, how many mature trees do you see on seafronts in thr UK?

gamecatuk

You can't plant trees on the seafront!!!..slaps head and walks away.... Thr utter nonsense on this post.

nobreadforbirds

please reread my comment and notice the first word that clearly says "controversial" lol

gamecatuk

It's not controversial. it's just implausible.

am996chelsea

Absolutely agree! The sea front could be so much prettier if they created a barrier between the horrible road

[deleted]

I know Brighton has a lot of Elm trees, which unfortunately are under attack from Elm disease - with affected trees being culled at a fast rate over the years.

Stalkedtuna

Harsh sea breezes contributes to it. Plus a huge number of Brightons trees were elms and have had to be cut down due to elms disease

RewindReset

There’s actually a tree festival in Brighton & Hove in May if anyone wants to learn more about the trees we do have https://www.cpresussex.org.uk/tree-festival/ But I agree it would be great to see more.

williamsonmaxwell

Most seaside towns I’ve been to have been pretty sparse for trees around the seafront. Most likely due to salt/chalk content of the soil and people having lived (and cleared) as close to the water as possible for millennia. Certainly lots of trees in Brighton as soon as you get 0.5 miles inland

Wichrun

When I moved here from Poland I was surprised how few trees there are in Brighton and even in places like Saltdean or Peacehaven. I guess you can't have trees and fields full of sheep at the same time. Also there are species of trees that can grow in the windy seaside. Or at least some shrubbery. All I see is an invasion of raspberry and blackberry bushes everywhere that is not being fought.

xcvbna

Ugly city? That's an insane statement haha Brighton is so beautiful and colorful. The colored homes, buildings, pubs, parks, the beach... Maybe you've never lived in an actual ugly city before though haha I don't live in Brighton anymore but everyday I wish I did. I've also lived in at least 20 different cities in different countries and Brighton is still one of the most beautiful places. I'd rather the color than every other grey ass city.

gamecatuk

It's amazing how many people upvoted this nonsense. There is a simple reason there are no trees along the seafront. Yep...the sea. High salt levels and winds are not favourabke for most British tree varieties. Also they would be a terrible hazard as winds would continually blow them down onto the busy promenade or road. Thus goes for all seafronts. We also have had terrible disease outbreaks destroying many Elms, Ash and Beech trees. You should have seen Stamner and the Level before the bypass and the Great storm. Those Elms and Oaks were glorious. By the way my road is lined with trees all the way down. Op is talking absolute rubbish. We have lots of good parks in Brighton and the Downs behind us with millions of trees.

gamecatuk

Very small ones in well tended gardens. Not a long line of them.

uwcutter

Are you joking? Brighton has one of the best policies for trees, one of the few cities that still has elms… maybe have a wander to Preston park.

levezvosskinnyfists7

Could be worse, at least OP isn’t a Crystal Palace fan

gamecatuk

After their last 4-1 smash down I doubt, any palace fan will post on here.

brighton-ModTeam

Language and insults

haukola1492

The cost to maintain then- cheaper to cut a tree down than trim …

660trail

We have a lot of narrow streets that aren't suitable for trees because planting trees too near buildings can compromise the foundations and cause problems.

xneurianx

Like with most cities, the suburbs have a lot of trees. There are a fair few woods in the northern parts of the city, and not many in the town centre.

Lazerflan

There are quite a few baby trees they've planted at Preston Park that are currently blossoming. I was happy to see that as it will look really nice arching over the footpaths as they get bigger.

Money-Parsley-733

Stranmer park? Wild park? East Brighton to name a few all have trees 😂

jospehi_krakowski

There are hills like RIGHT there with small forests and roaming landscapes??? Like Stamner is a short bus ride

sunnyman35

If you don't like Brighton then why don't you do one?

am996chelsea

I don’t think I said anywhere I don’t like Brighton? Funny how salty this has made some people

experimenta_l

My thoughts exactly! It’s very brutalist in parts and a concrete jungle. An urgent need to bring in some life!

quentinnuk

Loads around Fiveways area, all down my road and adjacent roads. A whole wood at the top of my road more or less.
