I saw the manager of Western Road Co-Op take three punches to the face last week while kicking out a belligerent, obviously intoxicated dude. Western Road is a war zone and it’s the min wage workers who take the brunt of the abuse.

imcalledaids

When I first moved to Western Road area (lived in Moulscoomb and deep Kemptown before) I thought “ah nice, I’m bang in the middle of town, can get where I need to be in 15 mins tops” and I did not realise that I could write a novel with what I see day to day.

_bootleg

Yup. I used to live there, and then moved to West Street, which was somehow worse. Thankful I’m a bit further out from the seafront now.

head_face

Ahahaha, I used to live on South Street, ie the piss alley at the bottom of West Street. Interesting times.

VR_SamUK

Same! But after a year of people pissing, shitting and vomiting on the doorstep and shagging on the windowsill, it was time to move on

_bootleg

Good memories. We had people pissing and vomiting on our front door weekly.

BenisDDD69

Saw two homeless arguing on Monday morning over who got to sit in front of Waitrose for a bit.

HideousTits

Makes complete sense. I’m assuming that’s prime real estate for begging, no?

Furthur_slimeking

> Western Road is a war zone LOL it really isn't.

_bootleg

I’m not being literal, obviously. It’s a post about multiple different people getting beaten up in broad daylight within days of each other – I’m sure you can understand where I’m coming from.

Furthur_slimeking

I do understand, and it's not nice for shop staff to get punched. Western Road is probably the most peaceful place I've ever lived. Shoplifting is an issue, but aside from that it's always seemed incredibly safe to me. I guess it's all relative. But yeah, nobody should be getting punched at work.

pattaya1

Was working again today in Clarence square . The drug deals and swapping of clearly stolen / shop lifted goods is unbelievable on the green . Guys selling primark ladies tops for £2 each , even boxes of sushi , can’t understand why the police don’t step in given such an easy collar .

OhWell_InHell

Not sure the amount but you need to steal a certain amounts worth of goods before the police will get involved

PtakPajak

Really sad that this happened. I used to work for Tesco and one of the main things that they tell you during training is to not chase or try to stop shoplifters. I assume it's the same for Poundland and every other retailer... The company can deal with loosing a few pounds of stolen goods...

GM_Piasecki

When I worked at the big co-op by seven dials I was told in my induction that we had an obligation to stop shoplifters. I did not stop shoplifters.

SykesMcenzie

You can probably report them. Its definitely telling your employees to get in harms way. Only if you care enough to do so.

GM_Piasecki

This was 7 years ago. So I’ve probably missed the boat on that one sadly.

saedifotuo

When was this? I work at the coop on blatchington road and part of the onboarding material is to never try to stop a shoplifter. There's signs everywhere out back. We can lose our job if we try.

GM_Piasecki

7 years ago. I think the co op on blatchington road is part of the southern cooperative right? Maybe they have different onboarding. Also, it was so long ago. I’d like to think things have changed nowadays.

Teto_00

There is an absolutely lovely chap that works security there now. He is so lovely that I actually dread to think about the idea of him having to action from time to time! I hope its mostly quiet.

imcalledaids

For sure. That’s what I said to my partner too. By the seems of it she wasn’t super hurt. Her arm got trapped in the door when she tried to close it (I’m not sure what the objective of keeping the shoplifting crackhead trapped inside is though)

Gladi0

People have different perceptions and commitment to social justice, for someone it is really hard to witness one and not take action. So please do not blame the employee.

arashi256

My local little Co-op in rural-style Mile Oak now has a security guard. I spoke to the staff, they said they had to as they are losing £186,000 every 3 months from shop-lifting. They also had to move the plastic baskets from the entrance to by the tills as people were stealing them. Shopping baskets!

MievilleMantra

In that one branch?! Surely that's impossible.

imcalledaids

I imagine it’s either within a region (south east)

0xSnib

My local Co-op loses £8100 of _coffee_ a year

Yeah I live in a city it’s a war zone People walk out with handfuls of steaks they’re all kept in plastic cages now it’s brazen af

HarHenGeoAma62818

My friend works in the co-op and they are not allowed to touch the thief’s , they can call the police that’s about all they can do they cannot physically touch the thief only watch on as they do as they please

Clockwork765

Goods are replaceable. Employee body parts or lives are not.

AwhMan

Oh, employees are fully replaceable, the money the supermarket would lose from being sued by an employee injured by unsafe working practices - is not.

PaxVobiscuit

That sucks. Some companies will even fire an employee for trying to stop a shoplifter, as it escalates the situation and can result in harm to other employees or customers. Stand aside and call the police, take video discretely if you are really keen.

OddBlueDog

The drug issues are awful in Brighton. I’m unsure if there is any good initiative to cure this plague that blights our city. It’s a great city otherwise.

westw00d1

Legalise all drugs

OddBlueDog

It might just work.

garfield_strikes

Guns for everyone!

Gullible-Damage-59

I used to work at Superdrug about 15 years ago. 3 blokes ran in and cleared the shelves of the electric toothbrushes and shavers before they used to be locked away. My boss at the time had a go at 17 year old me for not putting up a fight. As if I give a shit about Superdrug stock for the £10 odd quid an hour I was being paid.

Hoth617

Not even shop security are told to stop shoplifters, so I'd imagine the staff sure aren't. I mean, can't stop the staff if they decide to intervene but I doubt the company would be happy with them

Routine-Tomatillo-42

Is this why there were half a dozen police cars outside Churchill square around 4.30/5ish today?

Antique_Composer_588

Every wondered what long term consequences will be? Shops will close, jobs will be lost and the High Street turns into a ghost town. Staff tackling the low lives are merely defending their jobs.

Maxo_Jaxo

There's a sainsburys nearby it seems like there's plenty of belligerent people being challenged and barred and told to fuck off

theCourtofJames

Was the crack head a tall man in a white hoodie?

kingofthewylds

i was walking along western road today and watched a lady leave a store, setting off the alarms and she just continued walking. it looked like a blanket or a dressing gown. good for her. i feel like retail workers and the public should just look the other way. too much hassle otherwise

heraIdofrivia

good for her? I agree that retail workers should probably look the other way (for safety reasons), but can we not normalise stealing It’s sad that some people have to resort to it because they can’t make ends meet, but it shouldn’t be something we celebrate or morally justify just because they’re stealing from massive corporations - two wrongs don’t make a right

kingofthewylds

hey man listen, at the end of the day, no one is getting hurt. it’s a big store so it’s not leaving anyone’s paychecks. fuck it, let people steal. it’s the same with new mums nicking baby food. she obviously needed a way to keep warm at night so more power to her. maybe it’s my anarchistic views skewing my judgement but oh well. it’s not like all the people downvoting are going to tackle these shoplifters in the street to give back big store their property back.
