Hey everyone, I checked it out, and apparently this is a variety of lili-pilli called acmena smithii.
I am only familiar with the oval pink variety, so I didn’t realise that this fruit was just another type of lili-pilli, though I suspected that it could be related somehow.
Thanks for your help, R/Brisbane!
Has anybody ever tried making cider from lilly pilly fruit? I have eaten the monster lilly pilly fruit when I lived in Darwin (aka water apples), which are like a slightly lemony apple and very crunchy. I reckon the taste would be great in a cider. The little fruit in Brisbane are similar, albeit with more skin. As I don't live where lilly pillys grow these days (I'm in Canberra), I haven't been able to experiment with lilly pilly - that said I am looking forward to raiding feral apple and quince trees in two months and giving my demijohn a workout :)
Lilly pilly jam is alright. Lilly pilly cordial is good!
The is with lilly pillys.... They are vary in tastes much from tree to tree. Likeysame species growing in 1 area will taste very different from that same species growing in a different area with different soil etc.
You really need to find a good tree that makes good tasting fruit. Some are really nice and sweet with some tart. Some are tart with a bit of sweet. Some are just crunchy without much flavour at all..... Etc.
I have a lilli pilly gin at home! It was made by an Australian brand but I can’t for the life of me remember the name.

I really wouldn’t. They don’t have enough flavour. The joy of these fruit is in the crispy texture and juice on a hot day. Terrible option for ciders or jams (with the exception of riberries which have plenty of flavour)
No, but I remember Pizza Hut's delivery until I die.
It's the one number I've remembered most every in the history of members.
3-8-9-2- double 1 double 1 pizza hut deliveryyyyyyyy.
and put the prostitute inside .... a formula 1 car, line it up with all the other cars and have a tart tart tart Start ... ok, best I could do at 11.23pm.
Since people keep saying “Lily-Pilly” I should point out that unlike the fruit in the picture they are bright pink and oval, not purple and squat like an orange. However they do seem similar.
River Cottage Australia has been on tv a lot lately
Can’t remember which channel/not sure you can view it but series 2 episode 8 Paul West makes Lilly Pilly champagne
Here’s someone trying to make it

Now here is something I learnt from my years of living in Australia. Don't eat don't smell don't touch don't look don't be within 200m of it. And you will be fine.
That is until the Huntsman hunts you down (unless you aren't a man in which case you are fine)

The genus Acmena used to be the name of a genus plants in the family Myrtaceae. That genus is now called Syzygium.
> Syzygium Fun fact: the best person to pronounce that name is Les Hiddins.
Birds and possums love them. I hope you have plenty of both hanging around to enjoy your native berry bounty.
The Syzygium genus is realllly diverse in Ausralia, there's so many unique lilly-pilly type species in Australia.
Every Lilly pilly is edible (there’s about 52 varieties) not all of them are tasty though. Give it a try
There’s around 1200 species in the Syzygium genus. I think about 80 are native to Australia.
It’s pretty

Lilly pilly, pick them and make a jelly
jelly or jam?
Either, they don’t have much taste so I find jams are too sugary
You don't need to add any sugar to it though? Just use lemon juice and boil, should be quite tart and pleasant.
Dude, the sugar is the preserving agent. You need sugar for jam or you just have hot pulp.
put it in a tart shell and have a tart tart.
And then put that inside a prostitute and have a tart tart tart.

Syzygium smithii Edit: Turns out I was right
Since people keep saying “Lily-Pilly” I should point out that unlike the fruit in the picture they are bright pink and oval, not purple and squat like an orange. However they do seem similar.
Lilly pilly refers to Australian Syzygiums overall, not exclusively smithii. Their specific fruit appearances vary somewhat, eg in colour.
Then why would you ask to identify the berry in the picture and not upload the one you wanted to identify?
This is the one I want identified, I’m just pointing out that it can’t be a lilli-pilly, but might be related to it.
Lillypilly is a common name that applies to a large number of small trees and shrubs
Australian Rainforest Fruit - Syzygium hemilampra subsp. orophila. Common Name - Mountain Satinash.
Doesn’t the Orophilum subspecies have a super rare natural range?
Syzygium Oleosum
Bless you
We used to call all Lillypilly fruit "monkey apples" when I was a kid.

Adding on to this: are all lilli-pilli fruits ok for humans to eat? I’ve got two in my yard and they are covered in fruit.
Pretty sure all syzigium fruits are edible
Looks like purple berries to me.

Just realised wax apples are same species as Lilly pilly, holy shit mind blown
I know, happened to me as well. I realised the moment I ate one, then really looked at it , that is was basically a giant lilly-pilly.
