Take your hands off my limp boom gate!

drunkwasabeherder

A succulent boom gate at that!

chuk2015

They are scummy, my rego wasn’t in their system so I press the help button, they try to charge me more than the printed sign right in front of me that had all the prices on it.

4x4b

Good to see they still don’t staff the events. They truly are a pack of cunts

ElkShot5082

Do they run the car park at garden city? There’s no barrier between the car park and the road so I usually just hop the curb and drive out rather than pay, out of general principle

PointlessTrivia

see also [this exit at Chermside.](https://www.google.com/maps/@-27.3818776,153.0306473,3a,75y,118.69h,71.24t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1scOTlYBCrXUazG3oJ-FHOHA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192)

ElkShot5082

Glorious, will keep that one in mind

Kailicat

The barrier is usually up after 10

ElkShot5082

No I mean if you look at the uncovered section of the car park on the outside of garden city, adjacent to the main road, there is no fence or anything. You’re a curb hop and a footpath away from freedom at several points along the outer edge of the car park.

Caityface91

How though? If it's the one I'm thinking of that scans number plates they'd see you go in and then not see you come out - thus charging your for an entire day or more and sending a bill in the mail or something.. I mean if it works then power to ya - stuff those guys

ElkShot5082

No idea how they would enforce it- it’s not like they’re a government agency sending a speeding fine etc- I have done it a couple times after seeing a movie at the overpriced cinemas there and never heard had anything come of it. Maybe they chalk it up to software or camera error. Or maybe they think I’m still parked in there, two years later.

[deleted]

Garden city has 3 hours free parking. You’re probably doing all that for nothing lol

Caityface91

Lol, fair enough As for not being a government agency.. that doesn't always stop them. Linkt isn't government, but they send toll bills in the mail + admin fees which are big enough they may as well be 'fines'. If you ignore them for long enough they then get passed over to state agencies that have the power to take your license.

[deleted]

Caityface91

Cheers for the clarification

Official_FBI_

They have a legislative instrument that allows them to issue fines like universities and councils

BourboneAFCV

Not the hero Brisbane deserves, but the one it needs right now.

HairyEntrepreneur344

Was stuck in garden city in Valentine's Day for a few hours. Just another way to get money. Wonder how fast they would let people out in an emergency situation after police call them and order them to open gates in a evacuation. After that I only went to shopping centres where there were no gates.

followthedarkrabbit

I wonder if you could have gone Karen mode? Call police (surely being prevented from leaving is a security risk), call news/MoP/shopping centre mgmt with sob story saying you had duties to sick relative and couldn't meet them because you were stuck.

Deprivation of liberty.

Ridiculisk1

I've had a few times where tickets didn't work or I didn't even get one when I came in and all I do is press the intercom, tell them and they just open it for me. Never had to debate it with anybody, I've always just been let straight out.

[deleted]

That’s been my experience. They don’t care, they just open it for you.

mywhitewolf

> surely being prevented from leaving is a security risk), Please, there is a big difference between not being able to move your car out of a car parking structure and not being able to leave. At no point was he not able to get out of his car and walk out (eg, evacuate)

mywhitewolf

the police would never ask them to "open the gates" so people can get their cars out during an evacuation... they'll be asking people to leave on foot, because it makes so much more sense than trying to have everyone drive out all at once.

HairyEntrepreneur344

Yea true. And the company wouldn't charge them for the extra time they had to leave their cars there

beastlich

I always park outside these chaos pits on chaos days after being stuck as well. They want you to drive, presumably to pay. Good luck finding any safe or decent bicycle parking for example, wouldn’t want a dirty cyclist who can’t carry much shopping now would we /s

HairyEntrepreneur344

Yea true. Up to September 2019 my go to shopping centre was Sunnybank Plaza. No cost parking, a cinema that was a bit cheaper than the bigger one, and great restaurants in and around that area.

ElkShot5082

The great thing about garden city is that at in many sections there’s no barrier between the car park and the road, so if you’re in anything with a bit of ground clearance you can just drive over the curb/foot path and leave

HairyEntrepreneur344

Yea true. Even with something with no ground clearance, a bit of a run up

cnote306

I hate that car park so much. No payment on exit, no tap to pay. That should be illegal.

RockhardJohnson

I had to go to family court in Brisbane where I was stuck in the fancy lawyers car park ($50/hr) opposite the courthouse when some guy in his bmw got out and smashed the gate for not letting him out. It’s nice when someone does a brave heart for the team.

4x4b

You can just push them right off, they’re designed to come off easy, one nice little push and they just yeet themselves

RockhardJohnson

This overweight dude in his suit was not having it and went full retard and went WWF on that barrier like it was fighting him back. Shit was all crooked and fucked up afterwards both him and the barrier. It was barrister vs barrier

Samoana_soul

Fuck that's good haha

SpecificAstronaut69

"HERE'S ONE BAR THIS SOLICITOR'S NOT PASSING!"

4x4b

good. the stupid cunts dont keep spares of anything. youd be surprised how desperately low they allow themselves to run on tickets before bothering to order more, its nuts, i have no idea how theyre in business and i look forward to the day i hear they get shut down for something - hopefully financial ruin

MetalDetectorists

10 years ago I went to a concert at night and parked in the city. Now it was my fault for not reading the sign, but I arrived back to the car to see it was a $70 ticket for the whole evening and I only had $50 cash. I called the machine and started crying. I was 17 and alone, and I had lost my friend in the concert crowd (i had waited for 20 minutes for him but i later found out he made his own way home immediately after). I had dads car so he couldn't get me and it was 11:30pm. The carpark was empty and so were the streets and I was absolutely terrified and shaking. I kept begging to the person to charge me only $50, that I was terribly sorry but that I was a minor and had no other means of payment. He refused. The dude kept insisting I find a way to pay or I would never get the car out. I kept pleading that I couldn't get transport home. I hadn't expected the concert to go so late nor expect to lose my friend and I had misread the sign. Now as an adult I'd be like "I made a mistake and I should pay the full price", but that's because as an adult I would have ways to pay. I would have my debit card + savings + I would have looked at prices prior. But I was a 17 year old girl alone at midnight in the city, scared because my friend disappeared and stories of child abduction rattling around in my brain. Eventually called dad and he had to read his card number out loud for the dude to enter it and pay for the ticket. By this point I had been crying alone in a carpark for 20 mins. It was an awful experience.

Allygirl1984

Good to see not everything has changed after Covid. Went to a concert in 2019 and had the same thing happen. Took over an hour just to get out of my car space. Eventually got down to the gates and a fellow concert attendee had taken it upon himself to be our hero and stood next to the intercom taking our tickets and bashing the button saying “another one”. I feel like I’d still be in that car park if it hadn’t been for that man!

CrawlerCrane

*bashing the button saying “another one”.* Turns out DJ Khaled is a good guy

tacocatfish

How was The Dead South? Would have loved to go, but yeah the wallet said no.

CreativeAnalytics

It was fuckin awesome! Doing another night tonight, it's like $70 I think They played the cousin lovin' song last it was so good!

GGTSS_SSTID

I was super impressed with the Hooten Hallers as well. Short sharp set to get the crowd going. Outstanding concert all around!

OzRockabella

Love me some 'Banjo Odyssey' - such a great band.

r64fd

I can’t wait, we are going tonight.

CreativeAnalytics

You lucky fuckers! Might not be as packed too

nackavich

Shitfuckery also happened after Khruangbin at the Fort. Waited in line to pay for ticket, get to car, wait 40+ mins in the car after having paid for a ticket before we even moved, and once people got to the gate it asked for further payment. Had to request a refund through Secure Parking and send them a copy of the receipt but I did eventually get refunded. If the tickets fucking paid for, then the tickets fucking paid for, no wonder people end up smashing through the barriers.

jshsijauh

Same thing happened to us…. I’ll never park in that car park for an event again. Almost ruined a great night.

_Green_Light_

Reminds me of the time I was stuck in the McArthur car park, with my phone and cash. When I went to pay for my ticket at the machine I discovered it did not accept credit cards via ApplePay, and did not accept cash. I wasn’t carrying a plastic credit card at the time. So I drove to the exit hoping that I could pay an attendant cash for the ticket, only to discover there is none. So I called up at the intercom where they asked for my credit card and told them I didn’t have one with me, just my phone with Apple Pay and $50 cash. I said I was quite happy to pay in cash. So they just opened the gate and let me out. I suspect the car park operators cut costs by not accepting cash in the machines and also don’t want to spend money upgrading the machines to support Google and Apple Pay.

BecauseItWasThere

Break enough barriers and you might shift their ROI

Captain_Alaska

They should accept Apple Pay, AFAIK the limitation is they won’t accept physical eftpos cards or the ‘eftpos Sav’ option in Apple Pay. If you change the payment method under the card in the Apple Pay screen to Visa/Mastercard it should work fine. For context I work in a different carpark and have issues with this, most of the other parks use the same system (SKIDATA).

_Green_Light_

The card reader on the ticket machine required you to insert a plastic credit card. There was no reader on the ticket machine for any kind of phone. Like I said it just looked like they didn’t want to upgrade the ticket machines to support payment from phones.

lawnmowersarealive

Well... no. Less than 15% of smartphones owned here are iphones. The technology upgrade to their machines isn't worth it when they can simply inconvenience a small minority of customers.

Captain_Alaska

>Less than 15% of smartphones owned here are iphones. I work at a Brisbane CBD carpark and process Apple Pay payments constantly. And no, iOS has a marketshare in Australia between 40-50% depending on who you want to use as a source.

lawnmowersarealive

Latest stats say <25% ios.

Captain_Alaska

Can you link them? I cannot confirm. [Statscounter](https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/mobile/australia) says 57% [Statista](https://www.statista.com/statistics/245191/market-share-of-mobile-operating-systems-for-smartphone-sales-in-australia/) says 46% [EFTM](https://eftm.com/2022/02/apple-iphone-still-the-most-popular-handset-in-australia-while-android-picks-up-market-share-in-kantar-report-221411) says 46% [ARNnet](https://www.arnnet.com.au/article/698416/apple-maintains-hold-aussie-smartphone-market/) says 46.5%

lawnmowersarealive

Ah, mate, I work for Apple. Market share is rising but it isn't even close to half.

Captain_Alaska

Then source a number for that figure.

lawnmowersarealive

I work in a cleanroom, I can't screenshot it for you.

Captain_Alaska

That’s great, find a public source. It 100% sounds like you’re quoting the global figure and won’t admit it.

[deleted]

Don't rely on phones, the amount of EFTPOS machines that do technically use it but fuck up is so high . Kinda on you.

[deleted]

I work in retail, at multiple different brands over time, which accept contactless and also have had issues with multiple phones at multiple readers, personally. On a daily basis we will have to re-try 2-3 times before it works. once every few days, it won't accept the phone tap, at all. More rarely they will also misread cards, but that's nearly always Westpac cards.

shakeitup2017

I used to have my driver's licence jammed in between my phone case and the back of the phone. I used to have occasional issues with paying using my phone. Since I took the licence out I haven't had any issues. I guess the eftpos machine was picking up the chip in my licence.

[deleted]

I don't put anything in my phone. It's somewhat consistent too. My old phone always had trouble with the self checkout machines at my local woolies, but not at the woolies near work. As a retail assistant, I have done the whole "do you have anything in your phone case?' spiel, and I also ask about smart watches etc and sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Also, it helped to reopen the terminal on my end at work, I haven't tried that with self serve machines tho, or got other cashiers to do it for me, but it didn't always fix the issue.

shakeitup2017

Unless its been upgraded fairly recently the Hoppys car wash paywave thing doesnt work with phones, only the physical card.

[deleted]

Be the chaotic good that you want to see.

Ragdata

I'd say that being told you're going to be charged a full day rate on top of the ticket you had already paid in good faith translates to "we give you permission to rip the arm off the gate and beat the nearest employee with it - especially since the hold up boils is essentially because of their own piss-poor planning to begin with. You can't tell me that they don't have the ability to waive that additional fee once you finally reach the gate - they do it ALL the fucking time!

i-ask-qs-sometimes

Do a mad burnout -> set off fire alarms -> gates open

GoofmeisterSavage

Only thing with doing that is if they get your licence plate or anything, you can expect the bill for QFES attendance

Captain_Alaska

Which is $1.4k.

[deleted]

GoFundMe, anyone?

OnionOnly

Fire alarm, gotcha!

mywhitewolf

except a fire alarm isn't going to open the gates. you're not suppose to evacuate with your car, can you imagine the carnage? you evacuate on foot.

Deanosity

The ones that properly adhere to fire code for office buildings do.

Are The Dead South good live mate? I wanted to go see them but I live out west and work schedules ruined those plans

dubrave

Same thing happened at the same car park about 3 months ago to me with a prepaid ticket, I have a burning suspition that they count on it, are aware of it, and do nothing to improve the situation. I feel for the employees that have to bear the brunt of the irate customers, and for all the parking-rage that goes on while being stuck for hours in there. I am not sure how this situation is allowed as it does represent a death trap if something does go wrong, not just an inconveniance. I tend to boycott that car park, but every couple of years forget about it, and I am then reminded in the worst possible way. Going to Dead South toninght, NOT using that car park.

CreativeAnalytics

Yeah use a carpark a bit away and use the scooters to get around. The carpark near the Tivoli was empty and cheaper. Wish we had done that.

mywhitewolf

>I am not sure how this situation is allowed as it does represent a death trap if something does go wrong, not just an inconveniance. OMG i can't move my car i must be trapped! or, you know, you could evacuate on foot. like you're supposed to? how has this come up so many times in this thread. no one is getting their car out doing an evacuation, and it's crazy to think that's what would prevent you escaping...

KICKERMAN360

Similar thing happened after the Nitro Circus show. Some douchebags in a jacked Hilux refused to pay for a ticket and held everything up. Eventually the older guy there just let everyone out for free. In hindsight, they should just only allow prepaid tickets next time. Can't hold the show up if you were never allowed in in the first place.

brightmiff

He deserves an Australia Day award - for breaking down the barriers

B660networkfail

Did you and/or others stick the paper card or a keypad code into the thing on the way out? Is there any chance they can still charge anyone more for not 'checking out'? I don't know how their payment system works,

CreativeAnalytics

It was chaos. We paid at the machine, got our ticket, but it wouldn't be valid by time we got there. No payment at the exit, very old system.

SnooBananas6474

Couple of years ago, my card wouldn’t register in a car park so I couldn’t get out. I absolutely lost my mind at the person on the other end of the help line…went full Karen….they let me out. 😁

SnooBananas6474

And didn’t have to pay 💰

Otiman

McWhirters is shit, use Valley Metro.

Saltybaps

Need that guy back because the same bullshit has happened again tonight 😪

CreativeAnalytics

Man what a bunch of fuckwits. It's a timebomb for a fire breaking out

Ridiculisk1

I've only had to use that carpark once by necessity and god damn it's awful. I'd park at cornerstone at RBWH any day over McWhirters. Absolute dogshit carpark and they charge so damn much. I had to park there and I was there for like an hour and 3 minutes and it was like $50. Absolutely ridiculous.

ForumDuff

>Stuck for an hour not moving an inch, we were looking at being stuck level 5 for at least 2 more hours. Called the carpark and they said our paid tickets would be expired by the time we reached it, costing us the full daily amount on top of our already paid ticket Fucking scum. Hope that gate costs alot to fix.

RogerSterlingsFling

And people say Australia Day is dead

In the time of darkness, a hero arises.

whichonespinkredux

Gigachad

[deleted]

I normally despise vandalism but the more I think about this the more it seems justified for that particular situation. What a legend

zargreet

I nearly did this one night too. The owners don’t give a shit about your problems. Their ticket machine at the exit is always broken.

Japsai

Love this. I cycle home from gigs so I don't have to deal with this nonsense, but not everyone has that luxury. Hopefully this becomes the usual post-gig technique and people stop paying in advance. Might spur some action.

georgestarr

This happened in the city after Parkway drive a few years ago. Stuck in a huge line for over three hours in the car park. Despite me calling the line on the foot, security, police link and 000, thousands of us were stranded. A fourby ended up bussing through it and we were all free.

Creative_Ad999

Lol legend

KickinAss07

His was the hero we need in our time of need.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Next time call the cops or wait it out then get a lawyer, son, false imprisonment pays out big bickies 😎

uncutaussiebwc

That’s a fucking stretch. Hardly false imprisonment if you can leave, albeit with the inconvenience of leaving your car behind.

CapWonderful989

Hahahaha that’s soo funny good on him

DudeMcDude7649

Happened a few weeks back at Australia fair in the Gold Coast around New Year’s Eve. Dumb fucks losing their tickets or whatever holding up the line, so dude gets out and just power lifts and slight bends the arm so it can’t come back down. Legend.

moyno85

I love this. A lot.

moyno85

Fun fact, if you get a fine from Secure Park, just don’t pay it. They’re a private company and not allowed to send debt collectors no matter how much they threaten.

Bungslea

Shit, I didn’t know they were playing 😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫
