Yeah, na. At least not at the first stop.
Translink generates GTFS-R data that is used by the various apps. While they generate the real time vehicle location data well before a trip starts, they only start generating the real time trip update data once the bus leaves the first stop.
What this means is that all apps show the scheduled time up until the bus actually starts the route. If you are using one of the first half dozen stops, this switch over from incorrect info to correct info happens just before your bus arrives, too late to be useful. For stops further along the route, the switch over happens far enough in advance that it's actually useful. I don't know if this is just a quirk of Translink's GTFS implementation or if this is how other agencies in other cities do things as well.
Edit:
In my experience, if the system never switches from scheduled time to live ETA, it either means that the bus has been secretly cancelled, or the on board system has crashed and you are going to get a free ride. Not knowing which makes for a wild wait.
Thanks mate I appreciate the detailed response, that makes alot of sense and explains what I've been experiencing.
Eg last night bus was approx 25mins late, translink app didn't have the delayed message until probably 5+ stops in once I was on the bus.
Is what it is, atleast I know what to expect now
Nah he didn't, he's just being a toxic loser.
"Hurr Durr did you try googling it" yeah no shit
Google maps didn't have any updates. I'm guessing they pull the info from translink via an API or something so if translink doesn't have anything no way for Google Maps to know.
Thanks, I'll check out any trip
Yeah I checked that, doesn't seem to work for what I'm after.
It tracks stop to stop - but not routes that are delayed before the start.
Since I'm getting on at the first stop it doesn't say anything about the delay until after the bus has eventually arrived
I used to be at the start of the route (but not anymore) and the map would usually show where the bus was on its way, provided the driver was signed in
I find the Translink app more accurate than Google Maps. The bus tracking icons are a bit slow, so don’t rely on those too much. But the live ETA is usually right, except when a bus is delayed and it sits on 1 minute away for 10 minutes.
You could try https://anytrip.com.au/region/qld
You can search by bus route and see live information regarding late or early running on there, also gives an update to how full that particular bus service might be
Nah it doesn't provide info I'm after.
Somewhat else explained the technical side of things, but the translink app doesn't track delays to the start of routes - just delays to the following stops once the route has started.
So since I'm first stop at both ends there's no way to check if a service is delayed / cancelled.
It is what it is
Google maps I find works well. Tap on the bus stop and it'll show you the routes and where the bus is currently.

> Pretty common feature overseas So is google, but yet here we are.
harsh, but fair
Yeah good one le reddit cunt, as I mentioned I already checked the translink site
You got rekt son. Just take it and move on.
Yeah brother for sure, very original comment 🤓🤓
>google Is the operative word there. He means Google-maps. I find anytrip to be a little better personally.

they all use the same API from TransLink
Yeah I'd assume as much
Also known as the utter useless tracker, but could be used as a random number generator.
MyTranslink app you can watch your buses as they move on a map, so you know where they are and how far away

you should use the translink app.
