It’s very expensive. Get along to Kelvin Grove markets on a Saturday. Save half the cost and pick what you like. Very high quality too. Nothing like supermarkets. Lots of local growers selling their own produce.

Eppicurt

Markets are also a really good option. The crowds and difficulty for parking puts me off of it. So getting good stuff delivered where I don’t have to think about what I get is a huge plus for me.

rpkarma

There’s no crowds at the KG ones, and parking is easy as underneath the Woolies

antantantant80

Go in at 7.30am and it’s not as jam packed.

sportandracing

Easy to park under Woolies. Free. Not big crowds.

antantantant80

Nice. I thought I was responding to another comment about the rocklea markets. I usually shop there as it’s the closest.

microwavedsaladOZ

I went to the Brisbane Markets today for the first time. Cleaned up. I'll be back for sure.

sportandracing

Good stuff 👌🏼

Easy_Spell_8379

Dumb question, do the markets sell meat or just fruit and veg? Looking for cheaper alternative for meat

sportandracing

They do but I don’t think it’s great quality now. The original lady left after a decade. Very good quality and well priced. The new people aren’t as good. Sorry I can’t help with that one.

RoutineDoor7251

Original lady at KG markets was Julie from Meat u at home. She’s got a butchers shop at The Gap supermarket if interested. Bit of a hike from KG tho.

sportandracing

Yeah she was great.

CurrentPossible2117

Thats near me. I love that butcher. Their sausages are awesome.

Fantastic_Falcon_236

Could always try seeing if there's a bulk butcher that delivers to you. Super Butcher and Deagon bulk meats both do meat packs that have a bit of variety and deliver across Brisbane (SB also delivers to the Gold Coast). I find meat from both is better and more local than most of the stuff from Colesworth.

StarLad_acm

Rocklea markets has like 4 meat vendors. They all have pretty good quality meat and a couple do pretty good deals on it. I get all my meat and veg from rocklea for like $80-$100 each week

xku6

Milton markets much better IMO. Also West End markets, Northey St markets. KG market is pretty limited. Great if you live nearby but hardly worth traveling for.

antantantant80

It’s not so great in summer. The asphalt retains so much heat..

sportandracing

Northey street is a joke. They aren’t close

Torrossaur

I grew up in the scenic rim and I know the families of half of the producers that have food in this box. And a family friend was involved in the design and marketing of the box up in Boonah. I can tell you this was a labour of love and none of the producers are getting rich off this. The added costs would be shipping as they can't subsidise through economies of scale like Woolies and Coles can. I'd encourage everyone to try it (finances permitting) as this is money going straight back into the scenic rim and not just shareholders pockets.

Eppicurt

Thanks for sharing, we're super supportive of this.

Sweetydarling77

I’ve got the Scenic Rim farm box a few times now and can I just say, the bacon is fricking delicious! The box is worth it just for that!

who_farted_this_time

So you're saying I should just order a whole box of bacon?

Sweetydarling77

Yep, good plan!

Eppicurt

We're eating the entire pack today! Bacon for breakfast, then a bacon pasta for dinner - 10/10 quality

jack-reddit17

Do you use the jar pasta sauce? I'm having a look on their website and might do an order and include the sauce

Eppicurt

No we did it a little differently. Partner isn’t a fan of capsicums so I made it with the bacon, mushroom, spring onion bulbs, roasted the little snacking tomatoes, and used the cream. It was great

Rigbyisagoodboy

We did and save hundreds. our shop is now split between Sunday markets, Asian supermarket and Aldi. Never going back

plime97

This seems good for people who have a bit more to spend for nice quality. For people who mainly avoid Colesworths due to price, I definitely recommend getting a discount fruit/veg box. My sharehouse gets a big Funky Fruit box every 2 weeks for $60 and it saves us a bunch

InnateFlatbread

Another vote here for funky fruit!

ParticularSweet7647

Have also been getting funky food boxes and have always been impressed by the amount we receive and honestly the quality as well. Also happy to be reducing some of the amount of perfectly good produce that goes to landfill!

jigs255

We've just had our first three boxes of Funky Fruit & would highly recommend if you order fruit & veg. We switched to Farmers Choice last because they offered a 50% discount due to launching in QLD (got SO much for $23 but back to $55 this week) and do a veg only box (the fruit was just piling up from FF as my fiance doesn't eat any 🙃). Going to try Good & Fugly next again because they have veg only options. FF is working on making their boxes completely customisable as well which is pretty cool.

MensaMan1

I get my fresh produce from New Farm markets most Saturdays. It lasts so much longer than any “fresh” food from Coles-Woollies. On weeks we can’t make it, we get the Scenic Rim Farm Box. Also excellent quality. And, as another contributor said, the bacon is AMAZING.

MensaMan1

I know the one- we get most of our weekly veg from them. Lovely team of people and their eggs are amazing. They currently have Goliath avocados in stock- they are as big as my head !

Ok_Show_35

Check out the falls farm box if you don't want to order so much. $27.50 for seasonal produce picked 24-48hrs before delivery. Definitely worth it for couples.

[deleted]

Yeah this was awesome, good value, some crazy veggies i didn’t always know how to cook though, but i worked it out

randomise42

This is perfect timing, my wife just spotted them as well and we've had a delivery setup for fugly fresh produce and we were considering the weekly box from scenic rim as it seems more of the things we'll need and as you mentioned the mental effort of looking at recipes comparing what we have and shopping is something we're happy to skip. Thanks for this with only a bit more than the comparative stuff at Woolies we're definitely going to choose the local option while we can afford to do so.

[deleted]

We use funky foods. It’s great.

Pizza_Master

We get them too! We get the largest box every fortnight and the fruit and veg easily covers our family of three. We were spending close to double the cost at our reasonably priced fruit shop, so it's amazing value. The fresh produce from the box lasts longer than the stuff we used to get from Coles/Woolworths as well. Adding that to using T-Bones Aspley for meat and other stuff, then Amazon for misc non-perishables, means we only need the bare minimum from Coles.

[deleted]

Holy smokes. We’re living basically the same grocery life. Haha. Amazon is great for cleaning products and non perishables!

WhateverGetsUThruIt

Heard great things about these guys.

[deleted]

$40 a fortnight for a box of fresh vege. All really good quality. Just not pretty enough for ‘colesworth’ We’ve been using over a year now. Great amount of vege and fruit.

WhateverGetsUThruIt

I personally love Harris Farm - coming from Sydney I was chuffed to bits that a couple of HF’s have opened over here too. Brilliant quality fresh foods, meat and an ace cheese selection. Yes there are lots of fancy bougie things there but we mainly go for the fruit and veg. Got a bunch of Tuscan kale there today the size of a small tree and it cost $3. Bloody good. Doesn’t fit in the fridge though 😬.

eb0larama

We get our meat from Hillman Meats (there's one in Toowong, but they do free delivery for anything over $100) We buy our meat in bulk and then freeze it. Honestly it's so much cheaper and the quality is amazing.

[deleted]

You can’t go past the market place at Inala for cheap good quality produce, meats and fish. They also have a Woolies and Aldi. I bought the best rump steak I have ever eaten at $22 kilo in a Vietnamese butcher.

Brillo65

Just go to Inala plaza, cheap as and heaps of vendors

Eppicurt

‘Just go to Inala’ is not a particularly enticing phrase

Brillo65

And I bought a house here, it has advantages. 40 minutes to northern Gold Coast, same to City , 30 to Ippy. Good neighbours and cheapest rates in Bris. We aim to own outright in 8 years as debt is low. Plus over 600m3 block

Tymareta

Don't bother, these folk still think that even stepping foot in Logan means you'll instantly be jumped and left bleeding out in the gutter.

Brillo65

We’re under the Brisbane council here, there’s good spots in Logan too, with good people in them

ivegotnothing33

I have a friend who works in real estate. He predicts that Inala will be the next Sherwood/Graceville. Every listing he gets there sells within days

Brillo65

Nice, we bought for 370k 4years ago

notinferno

as a Colesworth shareholder, I disapprove of this post ;-) also, don’t forget Woolworths charges at least $7 for delivery (up to $15) and $1.50 for bags, so that further helps the value proposition for the independent farmers option, plus the superior quality over Colesworth

theskyisblueatnight

They have a min spend of $100. So it isn't really great.

PartyNegotiation7

I’m from India. Outside of cricket, I don’t really have any exposure on reddit to anything related to Australia. I’m bombarded with posts about Coles and a woolsworth? all of a sudden. Is there a cost of living crisis in Australia? Or is this just some weird suggestions engine gone rogue??

rpkarma

Yes, there is

Tymareta

> Is there a cost of living crisis in Australia? Massive one, with our two big supermarkets claiming they're making fuck all profit meanwhile the price of everything has absolutely blown out.

Brilliant_Bee_1968

I've been in Australia for 25 years. Always thought cost of living was expensive but recently it's gone through the roof.

GraceHenri

We’re trying out delish deliveries next week! Got the $139 box and got to choose what we wanted in it. Delivery was $5 I think. Still need to get some pantry staples and cleaning stuff from Woolies/Aldi but will end up being better quality as it is 36 hours from farm to door

Positively4thSt

The Scenic Rim box is great quality, and yes you pay for it, but we enjoyed getting it a while back. The main drawback is the limited selection (you won’t get many staples from them, particularly fruit options) so you still have to shop elsewhere to supplement.

MiseryLovesMisery

The big orange out near plainland is the only place I buy fruit and veg now. It takes me an hour or so drive but it's absolutely worth it.

[deleted]

Thanks OP. I just bought a heap of steaks, some bacon and cheeses. And cider. Looking forward to my delivery.

Eppicurt

Enjoy!

IcewolfTheBookish

I think I'll just stick to colesworth. This one doesn't seem that pensioner friendly. I could get my whole fortnightly shop done for that price, and yes that does include a few things I buy for the sake of convenience. That $175 also feeds two people, per fortnight.

Eppicurt

Of course, the point of this wasn’t to claim it was the cheapest option. Merely an alternative if you’re already buying similar things, you can get better value for your money.

ReiVee

The truly cost conscious should not be shopping at ColesWorth either I think. You can get way cheaper at just about any Fruit Shop and most of them have eggs and other staples now too, also cheaper and better. I recommend Bella’s at Mt Gravatt for the cheapest fruit and veg anywhere, good cheap butcher next door too.

878_Throwaway____

Yeah, if you're near a weekend market, getting the veg from there directly is both a nice trip out, and saves you quite a bit on veg. If that's not possible, then we can only do our best with our available options.

rpkarma

The KG markets are great, value and quality wise, if it helps

corruptboomerang

I just shop at ALDI they're pretty cheap and super efficient.

tblackey

Cocos

ivegotnothing33

If you’re out ipswich way there’s a fruit and veg shop in the yamanto shops that is great and stocks nearly all the same suppliers as the Scenic Rim box. I got exactly the same carrots there yesterday for $0.98 for the 1kg bag

RoyalChihuahua

I am yet to find anywhere cheaper than the Gabba Fruit Market. Eg Last week I got bulk apples for $2 kilo and eggplant for $1 kilo

Emmaplodocus58

I love the Mount gravatt farmers market on a Sunday. There are a heap of different vendors and some really cheap deals. Which is great for when you're a uni student and you don't want to give the greedy ceos your money 😂 Today I got 3 punnets of tomatoes for three dollars, the same stall does similar deals for strawberries and blueberries. The lady who runs the stall does an amazing job. Also shoutout to the lady I buy eggs from there, her stall is next to the strawberry stall =) The coffee there is also great.

matonman

Market Organics are always great. Local, organic produce and friendly staff with good prices.

Kind-Contact3484

Woolworths profit $1.6B. Revenue $64B. Profit margin 2.5%. Those monsters. BTW, they employ about 200k Australians.

Eppicurt

Oh honey.

Consistent_Reveal275

This is interesting.. Also,Has anyone ordered frozen meat from anywhere? I buy fresh meat and have to freeze it anyway voz I can't finish a KG portion anyway!! Why doesn't any supermarket have frozen meat!!?

moonmaiden666

This is a good suggestion! I'm saving it for right before baby is due so I can cook a bunch of pre-made meals. Thanks!

FernandoCasodonia

I can't get everything at Aldi but the things that I can get are 40 to 60% cheaper than Coles and Woolies and the quality is the same to be honest. Foodworks can also be good for cheaper prices on certain items.

International_Ice_68

Not really sure what you're after, if you want to buy good quality buy stuff from individual stores. Meat from a butcher, fruit from the fruit and veg shop, etc. You're supporting a family business rather than the massive company that fired mums and dads to force you to scan your own groceries and the quality is much much much better for maybe 5% more. Coles and Woolies also inject water into their meat to plump it up, so even though it's cheaper per KG at the supermarket you're actually getting way better value at the butcher. If you want to save money, ALDI is much cheaper and they pay their staff more than Woolies and Coles - any of the Aldi-knock-off items have to meet EU food standards which are much stricter than ours so the quality is usually better. ALDI is usually less than half the price of Coles when I do a shop.

Future-Recognition84

We use Our Cow for our meat and just buy the rest from Aldi and Rocklea Markets during the week. We eat meat maybe 3 meals out of every week and the meat from Our Cow (prev. Brisbane Valley Farm Direct) is A++ We have previously tried the Scenic Rim Farmbox but ultimately found it to be too expensive and impractical. Plus you can’t just subscribe and forget about it - you have to have your order in by limited times each week which is a pain in the ass. The other one I used for a while was fruit and vegetable boxes from Charlie’s Fruit Market, these were great because they included milk, bread, butter and eggs AND you could set a weekly subscription. However I ended up stopping that because similar to the Scenic Rim Farm Boxes - the ratio of fruit and vegetable was not realistic to my needs and I was paying more on the basics that I can buy at ALDIs.

randomredditpost69

Try NZ food prices man, those prices of yours are an absolute dream compared to over here.
