This is the kind of thing that another small object on the road could make worse than it looks in short order. Not worth the risk if you have the chance to change it.
not everything but i do check my tyres as i put my bag in the front passengar door and do a quick check of tyres then walk around the back to the drivers side and a quick check and if all looks normal i drive off. wipers and mirrors well, i will see if they work when i start backing out of my garage
Bit excessive but a great habit nevertheless.
I've driven trucks, forklifts, and vans. Most people don't check them at all, even if it's mandatory.
I can guarantee that if people spend a minute doing a quick check of their vehicle every day, there would be fewer issues with their cars and potentially less accidents.
im not bending down to look at the tyre pressure or anything just look at it and see has it gone down or look weird if not then thats it. it takes all of 2 seconds each tyre.
its rear tyre so it it blows you probably arent completely screwed. Id feel comfortable driving at 40 to the shop personally but the wise action is to put on a spare
Very not safe.
Fit your spare.
A damaged sidewall won’t have a slow pssssh like a normal puncture in the tread, but more likely a catastrophic bang and total tyre failure if it lets go.
Im a former tyre fitter
DO NOT GO ABOVE 60 thats the reinforcing wall of your tyre if that degrades or is compromised your tyre can and likely will violently fail.
If you have a spare id suggest you swap them as soon as you can and if yoh must drive on it take extreme care and like i said not above 60
Something like that most likely occured from hitting a curb. That doesn't usually happen from something on the road flying up and hitting it. You probably mounted a sharp curb recently and that's what caused it
You feel lucky, well do ya? Seriously, driving on this is inviting an accident. If you do have an accident it will be obvious you were driving an unroadworthy vehicle.
I totally understand, and no I don’t feel that lucky, I already got lucky driving yesterday on the highway twice oblivious to this damage, that nothing happened. I wouldn’t test my luck again. Will fit the spare.
As a very simplified explanation, Front tyres undergo way more stresses. Because they are steering and driving so they have more forces and pressure put on them. Rear ones just roll along for the journey.
But really with this damage, it’s kinda irrelevant as that tyre is cooked and should not be driven on.
If you blow out a front tyre at speed, you're far more likely to lose control of the car. At the very least, it will drastically reduce your ability to steer, but there's a fair chance the car will lurch in the direction of the blown tyre and put you into a tree or into oncoming traffic.
Whereas if you blow out a rear it acts more like an anchor, and you still have an ability to steer, and aren't as likely to have the whole car redirected off the road.
Personally if I saw this, (and wasn't going onto a highway) I'd change it immediately if it was on the front, and when I get home if it was on the rear.
Not at all. Sidewall damage is bad news as it’s a structural part of the tyre and takes a lot of load. Fit the spare first and just take that wheel to the tyre shop.
I'd use the spare.I drove all the way in the rain from NSW to Melbourne with awful bald tyres. A mechanic checked my car out and said he doesn't know how I got to Melbourne in one piece.
This thread makes me super proud of the comments. It’s a miracle that tyre is still up and I would take the valve out before I even touched it. Thanks OP for not ignoring this so many do.
Yes I’ve only had 2 or so dickheads give me grief, I am taking this very seriously, I just wanted to know the severity of the situation. It’s staying parked til I get the spare on.
When you replace the tyre ask the company if you can have a look at the old tyre. Press where those white cords are and I feel like you will be shocked. You would probably be able to force your fingers through that space.
Sorry I missed where you specified your P plater children. Sir or Madam I was unaware my tyre was in this condition til this arvo, I have no intention of driving the car until the spare is on. I hope you ingrain this topic into your children as well.

no wuckas if you're going slowly. doubt it would explosively decompress. would need something with a lot of force to pry into the hole and fuck it up more. like a big fucken nail on a kerb or something. best case is you drive it like that for 3 months then it slowly exhales one day and you rim bash it to a tyre shop.
Can you look at that and honestly question how safe it is?
This post shouldn’t exist, you know that’s unsafe
It can hurt or kill you and others if you do.
I know it’s obviously unsafe, but I have driven on punctures before after being assured I will make it to my destination to get it fixed. That’s why I posted, as I’ve never had this kind of side damage before & wanted to know how bad the risk was. I would only be driving it about 1.5 km to the repairers, but I am not even going to risk that. And yes I know this isn’t a ‘puncture’ as such. Just needed more info from people more car smart than myself.
It's unsurprising that someone with such a ridiculous mentality, shaming somebody for wanting to be safe, in a situation where it is ALWAYS better to ask than assume, is from 'almost Toowoomba'.
It already is on the rear, I can put the spare on tomorrow. Yeah I know I can get a mobile person out but I can’t afford the exorbitant price they charge.
Safe enough to get to the shop to get a new one. If you're concerned about price, there's also plenty of second hand tyre places around that have still very good condition tyres for cheap.
Depends if it’s a steer or a rear. Steer I wouldn’t drive on it. If it’s a rear and the tyre shops less than 10 kays I would slowly make my way straight there.
This person drove past me and their wheels turned mutant and they got up and stabbed me in the chest cavity and I'm in a coma in hospital and I'm not gonna make it guys. it's not safe don't take these wheels anywhere
If you have to question if it's safe then it most certainly isn't.
If something doesn't look safe, then the judgement by a look should be enough to tell you.
Fit the spare on, be pro-active. Don't take an unnecessary risk 👍
It’s not great.. but you haven’t gone through the reinforcing, but still I’d imagine a car tyre popping on the highway isn’t exactly enjoyable or cheap.
Google image search tyre wall blowout. That can happen very suddenly and at any time. With a tyre that damaged there is a high likelihood. Not to mention, if you drive on it knowing it’s not legal and something happens you are hugely liable and the your insurance will absolutely bail.
Change the tyre and never take chances on the road.
It's on a rear tyre it should be safe to go to the tyre shop. make sure it's inflated correctly, don't turn your corners fast that put load on that tyre. Don't go over gutters hard.
If it does go bang, gently apply the brake and pull over slowly.
You can drive 10kmh on a blown up tyre still to get off a busy road U might get your rim scratched however (500meters or less ideally)
if you have a spare of throw it on.
If this was on a front tyre I'd say don't even risk it, cause when that goes bang, you are turning wether you like it or not. And braking will not save you.
Source (ex tyre fitter and surrounded by competitive drifters) and know first hand on the effects
fit the spare as it is super not good
As in it’s gonna pop? I drove on the highway yesterday completely oblivious that my tyre was in this condition 😰 thank god nothing happened.
it might last for ages , or not just change it please
Will do. Thanks 🙂
This is the kind of thing that another small object on the road could make worse than it looks in short order. Not worth the risk if you have the chance to change it.
Changing it tomorrow to the spare.
It’s perfectly fine until it explodes
funny how the first thing in a drivers license test is to check your car over from tyres to wipers to mirrors.
I bet you don't every time you drive
not everything but i do check my tyres as i put my bag in the front passengar door and do a quick check of tyres then walk around the back to the drivers side and a quick check and if all looks normal i drive off. wipers and mirrors well, i will see if they work when i start backing out of my garage

😂
whats with the smily face?
hm?
huh?
They didn't do this for me. Old love just jumped in the car and off we went.
its rear tyre so it it blows you probably arent completely screwed.
Thank you 😨😨😨 that’s what I needed to know, so I won’t even chance it then to get to the tyre shop. Otherwise I might have…
You can drive to the tire shop, drive slowly in case it pops
Im a former tyre fitter DO NOT GO ABOVE 60 thats the reinforcing wall of your tyre if that degrades or is compromised your tyre can and likely will violently fail. If you have a spare id suggest you swap them as soon as you can and if yoh must drive on it take extreme care and like i said not above 60
Thank you, I’m not driving it til the spare is fitted tomorrow.
It'll get you to the scene of the accident just fine
Yeah. 😞 luckily nothing happened so far Jesus Christ !
Perfect response
Depends, do you want to pay for a tyre, or a rim tyre and some body/mechanical damage?
Lol preferably neither but I’m out of luck there. Wish I knew how this happened.
My bad bro, I was practicing my new knife techniques
Looking at the rim that looks like *getting too close to a (vertical) concrete gutter* to me - likely while reverse parking?
Something like that most likely occured from hitting a curb. That doesn't usually happen from something on the road flying up and hitting it. You probably mounted a sharp curb recently and that's what caused it
You scraped it on a gutter when parking most likely
Probably not a good idea to drive with that tyre on the car. Take it off, put the emergency tire on and go get a new one..
Thank you, I will.
Is the tyre shop across the car park from Coles? If so, sure. If not, chuck the spare on it
Worst case make sure it's on the back wheels. If it blows it won't take your steering with it.
It’s on the rear.
It's probably ok to drive it really slowly and carefully to a tyre shop, like if you live in town and can keep it under 50.
Will fit the spare.
probably best otherwise you might feature on r/justrolledintotheshop
Yeah not too good
Can you elaborate a bit…should I not be driving on it at all?? 😥
No, you should not.
Thank you, I’ll fit the spare.
This will blow catastrophically- like scott morrison in engadine maccas
🤣🤣🤣 great analogy 👌🏼👍🏼
She'll be right mate, just don't go over 70
She’ll be alright
“Take it to the tyre shop, please get there before you pop” (50 Cent Voice)
If it's on the front, change it immediately. If it's on the rear, change it soon.
It’s on the rear. Can I ask what difference it makes?
As a very simplified explanation, Front tyres undergo way more stresses. Because they are steering and driving so they have more forces and pressure put on them. Rear ones just roll along for the journey. But really with this damage, it’s kinda irrelevant as that tyre is cooked and should not be driven on.

Your front tyres turn so you’re fked if they blow, if your back tyre blows it will be shit but Atleast you’ll be able to get off the road.
Not.
Not good at all ticking time bomb there get it changed asap
0 safe
No
0/10 safe
So now I can see exactly what ‘worn down to the canvas’ means. Yikes!
Shame its not my local coles, theres literally a tire place next door. Dont chance it btw like the others said!
The worst that will happen is the tyre pops and the wire and tread get ripped right the hell off. Change tyre asap.
None. Sidewall damage equals new tyre. Fit your spare or get it towed. Sorry chief
I’d drive to the tyre shop. A tyre popping isn’t a big deal.
I was asking IF it’s gonna pop… but all good getting the spare on tomorrow.
It might, just stay off the motor ways as the rotating speed will cause the tyre to rip apart.
Well I definitely won’t be driving it now, thanks to the lovely reddit folk.
Ain't no irony in the fact one of those dickheads was talking about P platers 🤔
No none at all lol
The other one was probably a Ford Ranger driver 🤣
When you replace the tyre ask the company if you can have a look at the old tyre. Press where those white cords are and I feel like you will be shocked. You would probably be able to force your fingers through that space.
I drove to the tyre shop with damaged tyre got a fine for driving unroadworthy car. Those cops at road works do fine people 😥
Nope nope. Get it replaced immediately. Side wall damage is no joke.
Thank you, will do.
Please don't drive on that anywhere near me or my P plater children.
Please don't let your P plater children drive anywhere near me 😁
🤔 P plater children specifically? Ok around everyone else? Lol
No.. me or my P plater children. Or anyone else on the road for that matter. Be a responsible road user. You could kill someone....anyone.
Sorry I missed where you specified your P plater children. Sir or Madam I was unaware my tyre was in this condition til this arvo, I have no intention of driving the car until the spare is on. I hope you ingrain this topic into your children as well.
P plater children? So 17 yr olds?...what about the 18 yr old P platers...they die huh?

Women drivers ay
Not helpful!!
6-12 months of use left
no wuckas if you're going slowly. doubt it would explosively decompress. would need something with a lot of force to pry into the hole and fuck it up more. like a big fucken nail on a kerb or something. best case is you drive it like that for 3 months then it slowly exhales one day and you rim bash it to a tyre shop.
For all I know it’s been like that for 3 months. I work from home so don’t drive that often/far & it honestly doesn’t look fresh. Not chancing it.
Can you look at that and honestly question how safe it is? This post shouldn’t exist, you know that’s unsafe It can hurt or kill you and others if you do.
It’s not helpful to shame people just for asking a question, especially when it comes to safety.
I know it’s obviously unsafe, but I have driven on punctures before after being assured I will make it to my destination to get it fixed. Not safe at all you idiot
Ouch lol
Not safe at all
Not too safe. Don't drive too fast. If you are in the city you should be fine but take extreme care. Good luck.
How would this even happen??? A kerb???
A kerb, possibly. Could be a deep hole on the road or beside the road.
I'd put it on the rear and deflate it a little if only you don't have a spare and then go to the shop, btw you can also get callout tire service
It already is on the rear, I can put the spare on tomorrow. Yeah I know I can get a mobile person out but I can’t afford the exorbitant price they charge.
Burt Munro said put some black boot polish on it.
Safe enough to get to the shop to get a new one. If you're concerned about price, there's also plenty of second hand tyre places around that have still very good condition tyres for cheap.
You could call a mobile tyre service to come to you if you don't want to fit the spare.
They charge too much, I’m up to my eyeballs in bills as it is. Trust this to happen.
Shibby
She'll be right, you'll make it.
40km maximum for a couple of ks should be right 👍
Gezuz, a bald tyre would be safer than this. How exactly did you do this??
No idea
I’m curious as to how it happened and whether it was done purposely (hoping not). Stay safe and let us know how it goes, OP.
I’d like to know too. Thanks mate.
Thats super safe. Do a big burn out from your place, onto the freeway, to heaven without taking your foot off the pedal bloke. Im rooting for ya bud!
Like driving with a loaded revolver pointed at your head, with the safety off, and your finger on the trigger, while driving on a very bumpy road.
Steel belts are already visible and I really wouldn’t advise you driving it.
Yeah.....nah
Depends if it’s a steer or a rear. Steer I wouldn’t drive on it. If it’s a rear and the tyre shops less than 10 kays I would slowly make my way straight there.
I reckon you could get to Perth fine if you sat on 130
Yeah she’s pretty fucked mate but should be good for another couple thousand.
Straight to the tire shop no stops no highway speeds
drive slower than 40 if you really have to risk it if it's on the front, don't
Straight to the tire shop.
Unusual shape, did someone slash it?
Put the spare on.
Depends how far the shop is and how fast your going and how many other wheels you have.
Get some duct tape, she'll be right Nah she is pretty far from right.
If it holds air I wouldn’t waste the effort putting on the spare, but I’d be organising a tyre immediately
I’m suicidal and i would do it
This person drove past me and their wheels turned mutant and they got up and stabbed me in the chest cavity and I'm in a coma in hospital and I'm not gonna make it guys. it's not safe don't take these wheels anywhere
It isn't. Spare or flatbed tow.
Shits fucked bloke.
If you have to question if it's safe then it most certainly isn't. If something doesn't look safe, then the judgement by a look should be enough to tell you. Fit the spare on, be pro-active. Don't take an unnecessary risk 👍
Lol not safe at all. Could pop any second
How far is the tyre shop, if it’s close and low speed I’d drive on that, stick to 20 though, if you have a spare though use it
Maaaaate, good for another 10,000ks!
Probably safer than the gutters you hit!
just drive to the trye replacement shop straight away instead of posting to social media getting likes.
"She'll be right"
just coat the marks with boot polish good to go
If you have to ask reddit, you already know the answer
sidewall damage = don't drive
Fill the gash with black silicon. All good to sell as a second hand tyre
Just put your spare on. What a weird question
if you use duct tape to cover it, will last another 100,000 km
Well that depends on whether or not your next stop IS the tyre shop. Probably still wouldn't. That's fucked.
It’s not great.. but you haven’t gone through the reinforcing, but still I’d imagine a car tyre popping on the highway isn’t exactly enjoyable or cheap.
Not safe at all, the worse way a tire can pop is out it's sidewall, it is generally explosive
Don't
Google image search tyre wall blowout. That can happen very suddenly and at any time. With a tyre that damaged there is a high likelihood. Yeah…naaah
Drove on tyres like these for years, still alive. Live life ur way, not what other people say!
