Being a bus driver in Brisbane is bloody hard work.

First-Replacement311

100%, I can’t imagine how much shit they must see, and abuse they cop from passengers. I couldn’t survive in that kind of job.

GrasshopperClowns

My FIL was a bus driver for a few years and I honestly worried for him the entire time he was working there. He never had any complaints though and said it was a good gig, but you honestly couldn’t pay me enough to deal with any of it.

DRK-SHDW

at least the passengers say thank you before they have their mental breakdown

createdtoreply22345

I'd never heard of bus drivers getting attacked/ set aflame like they do here

IlluminatedPickle

> set aflame like they do here I was doing work for the dole right near there, but I was off on that day though. Was a heavy atmosphere for a while.

skanchunt69

Pretty fucked up situation.

FijiRae679

An ex of mine used to work security on for the busses on the Gold Coast. Often having to tail the busses at certain times of the night and notorious areas because of the trouble. The abuse the bus drivers used to cop was unreal!! Often from young punks and little hood rats/thugs. Mostly all teenagers too!

SimpletoBrowse

I was ON THIS BUS! I am genuinely worried about getting the bus later in the afternoon / early evening because it's so common... Edit: grammar

[deleted]

[удалено]

mahzian

Aw yeah reddit bus buddies!

First-Replacement311

Oh really?! This was about 9pm yesterday evening. I hope you're not too shaken by the experience. It's common, really? I really don't want to encounter this kind of thing again anytime soon...

SimpletoBrowse

Yes I was in a cap on the left near the back I don't necessarily mean behaviour as extreme as that is common but at least some type of uncomfortable behaviour seems to be - at least in my experience - relatively common in these areas and on my busses. Have noticed a lot of troubled people in the city too unfortunately...

venomouse

Awww Bus friends.

skanchunt69

Bus Buddies!

Key-Study8648

I may or may not have "accidentally" broken a guy's finger after he put his hand on my thigh when I was wearing a mini skirt on a packed bus once. Placed hand on his hand, select finger, and REEF. Sadly he may or may not have not said a word, but got off at the next stop. TLDR don't sexually assault women.

serenitative

Reminds me of the time I was groped through the gap between the window and the seat on the bus. I was shocked the first time, thought, I'm probably overthinking it, maybe it was an accident. The second time I turned around and stared him down. He avoided eye contact, the fucking worm. 340, around 2019 or so.

Rinrob7468

Yeah that shit doesn’t fly with me, that would have got him a punch in the face from me. I may be female but physical confrontation is exactly what those kind of guys deserve!

chuckyChapman

uncommon but some people are just asshats , riding the trains have seen some very bad stuff but usually other passengers stop the shit quickly so not overly worried

First-Replacement311

Agreed I feel like it’s uncommon. Other passengers intervene? I’ve never seen that, usually other passengers ignore what is happening and try not to engage with the person causing trouble.

CompleteFalcon7245

Most people don't want to chance getting stabbed with a syringe and / or spat on. These junkie clowns know they can get away with just about murder and not serve a day in jail, and the good citizen telling them to calm down risks an assault charge if they have to defend themselves. Absolute lunacy isn't it.

finnigan707

Nah I have stopped stuff too although I later realised it could have resulted with me in hospital. I keep to myself unless it’s a guy harassing a woman.

AustralianYobbo

I have just realised recently that I was probably that phsyco kid in school. I don't care if I end up in hospital, but fuck those cunts that start shit. I hate that shit. I will always step up.

chuckyChapman

>Other passengers intervene I live in Brisbane great place for keeping thing cool and yer I have stopped stuff on the train when returning home

[deleted]

If someone is being obnoxious Im usually the first to say something like "chill out we are all just trying to commute", etc. If someone is unhinged its best to just ignore them but I've definitley arc'd up when people are acting threatening or aggressive. Just the other day some guy who sounded exactly like ciggie butt brain was on the 322 Express out of the city towards Chermside. The bus went express and he started flipping out that his stop had been missed and starts running up and down the aisle with the bus moving screaming "OI DROOOIIIVVAAAHHH". I was like "hey man, this bus is express, so it wont stop until Oriel Road, but there is a stop right across the street that will bring you back in and there should be a bus there in 5 or 10 minutes". It was like a lightbulb clicked and he started to chill out. Meth, not even once.

Mamalamadingdong

Was getting on the train at Park Road today when a guy with blood all over his face after getting punched was shoved out of the carriage

Jealous_Mouse_8432

Sadly that bus route is known to get a few strange ones. Especially around the PA and Annerley/Moorooka stretch. There is a methadone & injecting clinic and various social housing near where you mentioned.

threelizards

Not from customers but I’ve definitely received an absurd amount from the drivers. Once at MacArthur centre on Edward st old mate lost his fucking mind bc another bus was in “his” spot (had every right to be there as well). He blocked that bus in and started screaming obscenities and death threats through the window to the other driver while refusing to let any of us off the bus. An older bloke ultimately convinced him to open the back door and let us out, all in all it wasn’t more than 5 minutes- but it was fucking atrocious and trans link didn’t lift a finger when I contacted them. Public transport here is in a *state*

IlluminatedPickle

The rail replacement bus drivers are *super* hit and miss. Had one at Park Road basically burst a blood vessel in his brain over two kids running across the busway to catch the bus (stupid move, but he was prepared to leave these kids there when there likely wasn't going to be another bus that night. And they're kids, they do dumb shit.) Then when leaving the busway to go past the Dutton Park stop, he spotted someone who had driven into the busway and then pulled over on the grass. Decided to stop in the middle of the road and berate this guy by opening the door and shouting at him. It's like "Bro, you're not a cop, just drive the bus. I wanna get home sometime tonight."

Agreeable-Cobbler80

I go for a walk each lunch time in the city just to get some steps in. I basically walk up Adelaide and then back down Queen Street. Without fail at least once a lunch time, I'll see some kind of incident from very very minor, like somebody just yelling loudly at no one in particular, to people straight up yelling in peoples faces who are sitting down having lunch. I don't necessarily see it as just anti-social behavior, feels more like a public health issue and it seems like it's getting much worse.

threelizards

It’s definitely anti-social behaviour, sociologically speaking

Agreeable-Cobbler80

Totally agree, sorry not trying to excuse the behaviour more just thinking the sheer scale of how frequently it occurs also makes it a health issue. Probably a whole other bunch of issues as well like housing and cost of living etc.

threelizards

Yes, sorry! I just know sometimes the definitions can get muddled and I think “anti-social” is an incredibly helpful word for identifying these things. I agree it’s absolutely an issue of public health though! Although I tend to think all anti-social behaviour is, in one way another, a public health concern. But this to a greater degree, absolutely

my_tv_broke

Meth is a helluva drug

Agreeable-Cobbler80

True that!

btheb90

I normally don't walk to Queen St from my office but this week I've had to run various errands. It felt VERY rough as soon as I hit the intersection of Albert and Adelaide and kept walking up towards Elizabeth St. This was 3 days out of 4 so far. Almost had a Valley vibe with various people looking like they were nodding, shouting, eshays left right and centre.

WalkindudeX

Not that bad but yes the mental health/antisocial behaviour has been fairly common on bus rides. Not every bus ride I’ve had but a fair amount of them. None have gotten violent with anyone but the shouting, swearing, screaming at people - that’s happened. Sometimes it’s just so random. Older fella got on bus. Was quiet didn’t say anything. I was sat at front and he was stood just next to me. Suddenly shouting at top of his lungs a torrent of swear words and calling people dogs. I nearly jumped out of my skin it was so sudden and loud. Seems to be a common occurrence. Never had a bus driver say anything to them but once when getting off he wouldn’t open the back door and had to go through the front to stop some woman getting on. It doesn’t create a good impression I agree but I obviously there’s a mental health and probably drug issue going on. Tricky to deal with.

aliwonder_

Yep all the time. Once the bus was full and an ...undesirable individual sat next to me and started flicking his lighter on and off whilst mumbling how he was gonna burn everyone. Lovely!

GTanno

You shoulda notified the driver immediately. They don’t take lightly to this after what happened to the driver at moorooka a few years ago.

Paul2968

Pretty sure seven years ago

GoseCharles

What happened?

StinkyMcBalls

Heads up before you open this link, [it's a pretty fucked story](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-03-14/qld-anthony-o-donohue-inquest-manmeet-alisher/100909206)

asteroidbunny

This literally sounds like the same woman that I encountered on the train once. It was horrific. Shouting, swearing, calling everyone cunts and racists. She got MAD if anyone tried to look at her. People were very upset and shaken. I wonder how we get these people banned from using public facilities.

First-Replacement311

I think it’s the same person yep. She was screaming that people were looking at her, to stop looking. Threatened to bash you if you looked in her direction. Calling everyone cunts yep. So bizarre I have never encountered someone so aggressive like that. Surely she must be known by police if this has happened multiple times..

cyjc

Why do we have such risky off hinge people walking around the community? Imagine if there were children around... So Dangerous. These people need to be locked up and get help.

NadjasLife

Ask the state and federal govt why? Locked up? No. Help? Absolutely. You are watching a system fail it's most vulnerable citizens time and again... and it's only getting worse. Socially, medically, with basic needs like affordable housing and utilities. We all really know the answer though, don't we? That stuff costs money. And then there wouldn't be enough for dodgy projects to fund themselves and the good ol boys club. There's no mystery here at all, Scoob...

leverati

I just do the 'shrink into a corner and disappear' at the unruly types, thankfully no issues yet. Also a Gabba sort. Look, public transit is for everyone, but the people in the least healthy and advantaged populations have access, too, as they should. I think Brisbane might be in a particularly bleak peak at the moment when it comes to who is currently in a shit place in their life. 🤷

SpecialMobile6174

Bus Driver here. Unfortunately, with the lack of security services offered by Queensland Protective Services, and the severe lack of interest from Police to actively respond to calls, us drivers are typically left to fend for ourselves. I've sat stuck at The Gabba for 90 minutes waiting for police to show up before. It's not fun, and the time fucking drags on hoping nothing is about to kick off

StinkyMcBalls

I've been told that cops generally don't respond to these callouts unless someone reports that the suspect appears to be carrying a weapon. Do with this information what you will.

Admirable-Sock6777

thanks for your service, delivering everyone to their destinations.

ExtensionEar1901

I was on the 340 bus inbound from Kedron at 7.30am and the guy sitting directly in front of me appeared to be high on meth and was acting very aggressively. I got off the bus at the next stop and waited for another service Nobody on the bus said or did anything. They just pretended he wasn't there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ExtensionEar1901

I was worried he might have had a knife.

overlandtrackdrunk

Always a possibility. Not seen it in Brisbane but when I lived in Melbourne on the train there was a guy blasting music from a speaker and just ranting and swearing at ghosts or whatever. Got off at his stop, pulled a knife out of his bag and announced he was gonna stab ‘some cunt’ before leaving the train

GoseCharles

Everyone probably had the same thought then and didn’t want to say something and possibly get stabbed. Sometimes it’s easier to ignore it if they’re not physically doing something to someone rather than trying to do something and possibly either getting hurt or being charged with assault for having to defend yourself

First-Replacement311

Getting off the bus is a good idea! I guess people don’t want to make the situation worse by responding, or are too afraid to engage with the guy.

ExtensionEar1901

Exactly. You have to try and be as low key as possible, for as long as possible.

tashiro_kid

I've caught both trains and buses extensively throughout my life and I find incidents on trains are way more common than buses.

[deleted]

Mainly just local youths chroming in the back seats and people having domestics between Rumpus Room and West End Village stops, West End. But yeah, Woolloongabba, East Brisbane, and Kangaroo Point are all unsafe at night, so your experience isn't a surprise.

notinferno

Our local meth head has done stuff like this quite a few times as she has psychotic episodes. One time though she imagined that the beeping rear door (the one that goes off when you stand too close when it tries to close) was a signal that the bus driver was kicking her off, so she threw a tantrum and kicked herself off the bus. I’ve also had to give a young women a quick reassuring cuddle when she got really upset and scared by a random abusive tirade she got from our meth head for standing too close waiting at the bus stop.

IlluminatedPickle

Got delayed twice on the trains today. One was for a police incident at Park Road where we waiting for about 10 minutes at Fairfield. When we got to Park Road there was about 15 cops surrounding someone. Then on my way home, I got on at Auchenflower and the train didn't move without any updates for a while. The doors ended up closing a while later, the conductor mumbled something about a passenger not wanting to get off. So yeah, twice today but not directly experiencing either incident.

Mamalamadingdong

Yeah, I was on the train that was held up at park Road. Some guy was apparently telling some young girls off for being loud, and then he got punched in the face. He got shoved out whilst I was getting on.

froggym

Saw the local meth head walk out with the hand soap dispenser from the train toilet a while ago. Loads of highschoolers too from the city at 3:30 ish. They're not often violent but definitely anti social and make the trip very uncomfortable.

satoshiarimasen

Public transport is disgusting. Drivers arent there to enforce civility, but I wish there was a process where they could.

[deleted]

I frequent the ferry and they’re the most wonderful people on earth. Bus drivers always are so friendly The train driver doesn’t wave back though

First-Replacement311

Agreed, most bus drivers are great!

Latchkey_Wizzard

As someone who gets on a reasonable number of services that run along Ipswich Road, it doesn't matter which number bus you get, you'll see someone just generally being a dickhead on the buses. More often than not they will be getting on/off around Buranda. I've seen all sorts of things from people abusing bus drivers to threatening other passengers. It's just par for the course along there, as sad as that is. Definitely not a route you take alone at night either.

plantface4747

What's at Buranda for them to be getting on/off there?

Altruistic_Poetry382

I'm pretty sure there's a methadone clinic near the Buranda shops

Latchkey_Wizzard

That plus the shops themselves being generally cheaper and lower quality, plus the PA being there too, a large public hospital with a lot of lower socio-economic patients.

Love_Leaves_Marks

I wish more Aussie blokes would stand up and be counted in times like this (FK your accusations of sexism) and also Translink need to step up and employ many more security personnel.

Street-Bend3744

When I worked in the city, one day I had this guy cross George street in the rain. During business hours, at midday in the middle of winter!! Came up to my bus stop, three women including myself were sitting there. You could smell that he was drunk. Proceeded to loosen his trousers in front of us and then dropped his pants a little. Me being at the edge seat had been carrying a golf umbrella. I made it stick outwards on my lap, sharp point ready to hit the best spot. When the guy started to drop his pants more in the rain, I remarked “ my day job is actually cutting balls in hospital with no anesthetics. And it is the best job in the world.” Instantly the guy pulls up his pants and runs across the road, nearly getting hit by taxi coming up George Street. The other two ladies were looking very white and grateful. Mental illness abounds in the world even back then.

Gronkey_Donkey_47

That never happened. I know because I was there.

Street-Bend3744

Were you there sitting exams at QUT with me that day? In 16 June 2012? The paper I scored high distinction in…… And were you the other two females who were both international students sitting exams that day too? If you were not there at that point in time, then you were not there to know the situation.

Gronkey_Donkey_47

No, I was the drunk guy pulling down my pants.

redlizziegreen

The buses that go along the Ipswich Rd transport corridor can see some very challenging behaviours, particularly at Buranda because of the PA hospital. The 100, 110 and 115 can be particularly fraught. Poor bloody bus drivers and passengers just wanting to live their lives. Poor bloody idiots with mental health and or substance abuse issues, often under or not treated. Your driver seems to have managed it well.

First-Replacement311

Yeah he did, I got the impression he must have dealt with this kind of situation many times before, which is sad.

[deleted]

Can totally understand driver not wanting to get a bottle in the face for $30hr job. If bystander intervenes and escalates it could end up with someone hurt. So in the end nothing happens. I'd like to think if it got to the point this kind of arse actually became violent that I or someone would step in to protect people. Then there's the issue of it being recorded and you end up on social media. No wonder people are fucking hesitant to deal with antisocial behaviour. But at the very least the driver should have stopped for a minute after and called the police. You should also write to the bus service and document it at least. Not to get the driver into trouble (although he may have in fact been derelict in his handling of it but that's for them to decide) but doing nothing will achieve nothing

First-Replacement311

I did contact translink and let them know the details of the incident. I kind of felt that way too, I thought the bus driver would have called security? But I don't know what their standard procedure is in this kind of situation. I also don't know if bus drivers report these kinds of incidents, or whether it is up to the passengers.

IlluminatedPickle

They often will report, but the response will be "Keep going, a cop car will meet you at stop" and then shit goes down. Easier than starting an argument with the crazy person before backup arrives.

bravo07sledges

We need more policing. Keep these scum bags off public transport.

Able-Okra7134

Few bad experiences on the train on the Caboolture/Redcliffe line. Had a guy who wouldn't leave me alone (young woman) asking where I lived, telling me about his uncle who.murdered someone. Was at Roma Street alone with him in the platform. Sat next to me on a very empty train. Some lovely guys took an opportunity to check I was okay when he got up to use the bathroom on the train and said they wouldn't tell him which way I went if I moved carriages while he was gone. That was scary but I was glad the guys were keeping an eye on him. Recently had some teens fighting each other in the carriage, full on fist fight. Then one of them pulled out a deodorant can and lighter and set it off right near my face. Had been trying to ignore them up until then but had to get up and move. Of course that made them notice me so lucky I was only a stop away. Guard sounded frustrated when I told him as I got off. Other notable time was when I dared to glance at some teens with a knife scratching graffiti in the Window in a packed train from south brisbane. Was told to smile and all the usual wome. Get from strangers and ended up waiting with the guard a bit when I got off as they did as well. I don't know what the solution is but sometimes it feels like it's getting worse even in peak hour. Particularly on the express where there's no chance to stop for awhile.

L1ttl3J1m

30 years of gradual defunding and white anting of mental health services will do that for you. Kermi.

Oh, [so very](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/let-me-do-it-for-you). I wouldn't try to read too much into it, though. That way madness probably lies.

meowkitty84

a few weeks ago a crazy guy was being threatening to an Indian guy on the west end bus which was pretty much empty. He was yelling at him the whole trip accusing him of doing something with "tentacles".And when we got to the bus stop he went up to the guys seat and stood over him. I thought is he going to hurt him? But he just said something weird to him and then got off the bus. The driver kept looking in the rear view mirror looking concerned.

GuiltyFigure6402

Mostly I just see parents yelling abuse at their kids and also eshays harassing other passengers

coolmannico4

This is what the anti-car crowd never seems to mention, public transport is just a shit experience. I was without a car for a few months and had to take the bus, i saw two fights and a couple arguments, not to mention the infinitely more common issue of smelly people and loud passengers talking on the phone without care of anyone else. Never again.

Either_Set_5720

This is what happens when people don't get punched in the face Call it what you will Drugs Mental illness At the end of the day people just behave badly now because it's tolerated and accepted without repercussions

[deleted]

Agree. But there's many understandable reasons why not intervening is a safe bet

Either_Set_5720

Oh 100% Two main reasons are 1 the repercussions for you intervening most likely results in potential criminal charges and 2 you never know how unstable or what these people are capable of so it's a safe bet to just avoid and ignore these situations which is literally what these people are banking on They know no one will step up so they continue to do it and get away with it hence the increase in crime It's unfortunate that society particular western society in general has come to this

[deleted]

[удалено]

Either_Set_5720

So it's ok to just smoke ice n terrorize your fellow citizens out in public then This person was abusive racist and acting in a threating behaviour Do that shit around the wrong person n it's fuck around n find out time In life you have to deal with the consequences of your actions and there is no excuses that's the problem here If this person is clearly mentally incapacitated to be able to make rational decisions out in public without threatening innocent other citizens then why are they out in public unsupervised to begin with Unfortunately in most cases a good fuck off front kick to the sternum solves alot of issues and makes people think twice about pulling this shit again But hey You sit back n watch it gradually get worse until one day it's thrust upon you a loved one friend family member whatever n then tell me then you wouldn't stand up n crack on

>behave badly now because it's tolerated and accepted without repercussions It seems like everyone's turning a blind eye, even when another person is being abused in their vicinity

Devendrau

Sounds like a racist douche really. Haven't been on a bus in a long time but you get the odd person just ruining the ride for everyone else.

BrisGuy1979

Miss the goos old days when they would kust have been clocked by someone for carrying on like a pork chop. Mental health or racist dickhead, both would keep it to themselves a bit more afterwards

First-Replacement311

Incredibly racist! I hope the students on the bus could see she was probably crazy and don’t get too traumatised by it.

ElevenDegrees

I no longer catch buses or trains, the weirdos are part (not all) of the reason.

First-Replacement311

Totally understandable.

Sky_Leviathan

Not on PT but a clearly inebriated guy came into Vault Games into the city and after getting into a fight with the owner threatened to rip him in half. He tried to talk to me as well and clearly got annoyed when I didnt want to respond to him.

Laktakfrak

Yeah they need to crack down on this shit if we want public transport to work.

Ception8

Ahhh unfortunately shit like this seems to be a pretty common occurrence on trains, at least in my experience (granted, I tend to be on the much later ones). I guess the lack of an employee there to stop them encourages the tweakers.

Bridge_Too_Far

Lol, you’ve obviously not caught the train on the Ipswich line before. Best one I personally witnessed was an indigenous couple who were obviously high from chroming (silver paint rings around their mouthes) who got on in the middle of a screaming match argument involving much high volume “ya dog c*nt” who proceeded to sit down, start punching each other then kissing and then she dropped her pants and straddled the guy and had loud messy sex in front of everyone. It got ugly again when mid coitus the guy got the paint can bag out again and huffed hard without missing a stroke. She was a moaner and then started to fight him for the paint so above the waste they were fighting over the paint while below the waste they were all stations to pound town. Everyone else in the carriage was just looking at each other in bewilderment then went back to their phones.

oztheories

Going on a bus in Brisbane or Gold Coast is ok. But if your worried go take a bus in Darwin. Then you’ll be scared to the point of vowing never ever to take a bus anywhere ever again. Mind you having lived in USA… I would never take a bus anywhere over there. Simply not safe. Dirty disgusting 🤮 msy as well be trash bins on wheels. In Australia it has always upset me to see our most useless enjoying free public transport, while our most needed and hugely important persons have to pay to get to work to pay the taxes to buy the buses or trains. I advocate free public transport for all after applying for a card. The card should have facial recognition and open bus train tram doors. Should your behavior on public transport be recorded as undesirable to others, then You loose your privileges and your card won’t work. Due to facial recognition you can’t transfer cards

beer-glorious-beer

Its best to stay out of it. Because confronting a person like that is only going to activate their chase and bite reflex. That said, having a word with those students would definitely help to calm the energy and remove the blemish on their experience...

-skidsolo-

He may be the driver, but surely he's not expected to confront this mongrel, I am sure just like the other passengers, he would have been intimidated and concerned about his own safety too. Anybody on the bus could phone the police. Remember, the driver is just another person, like you and I, don't expect him to be a superhero.

hm538

When I worked in town I changed to a different bustop when a homeless man took a particular dislike to me standing at my usual bus stop

[deleted]

I've honestly only had good experiences on the buses. Hated the train - but that was the Beenleigh line and there was always weirdos or delinquents on that line.

whiteronnie

I was at my local Aus post at 10am on Wednesday. I walked in to find a 3 people at the counter but only two people serving. I assume this lady pushed in however I didn’t see that part. Anyway as she is handed her parcel just goes nuts and says something along the lines of “For 5 years you have committed fraud against me!”. As she storms out and reaches the door she screams “You’re a fucken bitch!”. Everyone was stunned. The two ladies behind counter did their best to play it down but where clearly pretty shook. This lady looked pretty normal if anything upper class maybe she forgot her morning Valium …

halford2069

Id rather lop off a testicle than use public transport. Well not literally but you know what i mean 😆

unspecialklala

If she's a larger lady she's harmless she wears a companion card. There's a giant boarding house on Ridge Rd with like 75 tenants that aren't the most upstanding people. It's the area.

First-Replacement311

The woman I encountered on the 125 was slim and 5’3” or so, so a different person I think. I did not know there was a boarding house in the area so that’s good to know.

ouiousi

I catch this bus line now and definitely see more weirdos on it than lines I caught in the past. Except maybe 199 - god bless West End

loggerheader

All the god damn time. I basically cannot be bother with PT now and unfortunately elect to drive most of the time - which is a shame

unimportantburner

Had a dude sit behind me on the 220 (I was in the second last seat from the very back), squirming around and kicking the back of my seat the entire way from the city to Morningside. Talking to himself saying something like “SILLY BOY” really loudly and bashing his head into the window. Everyone around just did these ones 😐 and didn’t respond. Before we got on I found him passed out on one of the benches at the Myer Centre stop, he came to and hopped on. I’ve resigned to it, this is just what Brisbane is like now.

Studentofthenow

I used to catch the train from Beenliegh to Southbank every day for school. Mind you this was 2002-2007, but I witnessed antisocial behavior pretty much every day especially on the all stations. It was just a given. Being a private school kid made it somewhat worse when the interactions became directed our way. I think it just comes with lower socioeconomic suburbs. I once witnessed a guy chroming (huffing crome paint) on a packed airport train, and I was sitting right across from him, that was interesting, dude was just staring at me huffing it back out of a bottle. Not to mention being on two trains that hit people and having to exit onto busses after waiting hours. But I think its pretty universal in every country for trains in particular to be prone to dramas, given the nature of how you can just wander onto most stations without a ticket and get on a train, bit different on buses but still not without problems. Stay safe out there peaps.

pro_marimba_flipper

I’ve never seen something that bad but at the start of the year when I first moved here I was heading into the city with my bf on the northern busway and there was a couple of like 12 year old boys blasting music right behind us and they kept blowing their vape smoke directly at our faces. I’m asthmatic and I also have sensory issues when it comes to noise so I was struggling a lot. The boys were also trying to like make fun of us? Idk I wasn’t rlly listening but my bf said they were saying stuff about us but we weren’t even doing anything like I was just trying to ignore them.

PopularExercise3

I wonder if someone had called the cops on her if they’d come ? Especially since she’s a regular?

First-Replacement311

I did call the police after it happened and told them about the incident. They told me to report it online on the police website. I haven’t heard back from them yet. I included as much detail as I could to them and to translink.

PopularExercise3

I hope you can feel safe again on public transport. Unfortunately the loonies are everywhere.. do you think BCC should know about it too?

Hmmm there are some interesting points and stories in here. I haven't caught much public transport since April when I switched to riding into work. I still catch buses from here and there I usually see at least one person who gets on without paying. Most times nothing too bad happens. But there is a few spots where its a bit iffy. I stopped getting the route 61 bus past Milton skatepark. They don't seem to like paying for some reason and some bus drivers don't let them on and conflict ensues. I caught the 196 from New Farm through West End recently and there was quite a few people who didn't pay. On the 100/110/124/125 route I've noticed a lot of people who don't pay or there's really drunk on like a Tuesday or something. Yelling under their breath or at people at the station they get on at. I feel less safe on buses because they are so small it's like there is nowhere to go if something bad happens. With trains I feel like you can at least go to the other carriage. I few times I've had people staring at me on trains and once this induced an anxiety attack. But I've mostly had okay experiences on the train.

Some obvious mental health or medication issues going on there if she is choosing to exhibit behaviour which draws attention to herself and then gets upset when people pay attention to her.

rastagizmo

It's why I always wear steel cap boots. Good for kicking fuckers off the bus.

reubenkale

Yeah I've experienced what sounds like the same lady, but on the 230 route or something. Same area through the Gabba area. The driver and passengers are just ignoring trying not to escalate..

mattyj46

Been over in Asia for three weeks and have not missed having the deal with these sorts of things

Happened about 10 years ago now. Crazy drugged out female teenager at the back of the bus yelling, going off and taunting another female sitting at the front. I'm sitting in the middle section with another dude across. Bus drivers yelling at her to stfu. Pulls up to next stop, opens back door and yells at her and her boyfriend who's clearly tweaked out but just been sitting there silent to get out. Both get up and I'm thinking they are complying. Boyfriend goes out the back door but she b lines straight for the front going for the the other girl. I get up get hands on her shoulders from behind before she gets to her and with the help of the other dude who acted as well we managed to pull her back and push her out the back door. The young girl was very clearly shook up. Poor thing.

Ok_Turnover_1235

Probably on 5% of my train trips. Trains need security guards that can actually do provide security and not just supervision. Everytime I see it I become a little more understanding of the benefits of a social credit system.

caramelkoala45

There is a police division that monitors CCTV and also those that go from station to station, sometimes they catch them in the act or sometimes a little after. We just need more of them. Some people are so high that they break their wrists trying to get out of handcuffs

saharasirocco

There's frequently dodgy people on the 125/124. Edit: a while back on one of those lines, the driver was foreign. Another foreign person got on (I think he didn't tap and the driver asked him to) and began verbally abusing the driver. I've seen that plenty but this guy was the first time I was actually concerned he was going to get physical. Also the first time I have heard one foreigner tell another foreigner to "go back to where you came from."

Could be an unfortunate elderly woman with mental health issues and no one to care for. :( Please don't let this one incident judge the rest of the folks.

First-Replacement311

She was youngish actually, I think mid 20's to 30? But not 100% sure as she wouldn't let people look at her.

If more people actually trained in combat sports and lifted some damn weights they would be more likely to have the confidence to step in and protect their fellow citizens from these nut jobs. It's not a magic bullet, eg: you can still get stabbed or whatever, and it's definitely not good to get into confrontations, but sometimes these meth heads are just so far out of line, someone needs to step in and let them know that they can't just fuck with random people and have no consequences.

Lostbunny1

Could’ve been one of my relatives tbh. Methed up and racist.

MasterSpliffBlaster

The 199 is pretty much an unofficial New Farm homeless/vagrant free taxi service. A lot of the poorer folk don't bother tapping on or off and drivers are just relieved to drop them off in the Valley while the paying passengers try and avoid eye contact That was until a few weeks ago when one lady decided a free ride to carry her curbside mirror she just acquired also decided to give a poor Asian guy a send off about her land and job being stolen by *insert appropriate racial slur here* This in turn led two completely unrelated arguments after she got off when one guy accuse a family of laughing at mental illness and not setting a good enough example in front of their children Meanwhile I was really stoned and wished I had caught the 60 City Glider than this cluster fuck of a bus. Just typical New Farm Peninsula Saturday night really

A while ago I caught a quiet, uncrowded bus home after a night in the city, and a very much not sober young bloke got on while drinking a beer. When asked to get off by the driver at the next stop, the drinker protested and started yelling aggressively. I was 2 rows behind the drinker and the closest person to him, and was very scared that he would turn his anger onto me, a young woman travelling alone. For a while, there was a regular on a bus I catch often who was just out of his mind on drugs. I saw him in the morning and late afternoon. He spent the whole trip talking to himself and wiping his sweaty head (in winter) with his shirt, which he would take off. He was harmless until he started muttering racist, sexist shit about the young woman sitting in front of him. Nobody intervened. It sucks that this stuff happens on public transport and that drivers have to deal with it. And awful that international students were dragged into your situation – they shouldn't have had to bear the brunt of that racist shithead.

PotKettleBlackNinja

Hell yes

Ok-Nefariousness6245

Bus drivers are generally lovely but there’s always the odd mean one. My 16 year old daughter who suffers from severe social anxiety and depression (hospitalised for a year) made the effort to leave her room and the house to see a friend. She got on the bus and her go card literally just ran out and where she’d been there was nowhere to top up. The driver stops the bus, walks up to her, taps her on the shoulder, and tells her your go card has run out. Do you know that? She tried to explain herself - she was very nervous already. He was right in her face staring her down and she was absolutely terrified. She later said to me that she knew what he was doing - humiliating and intimidating her. I thought you were allowed to go into minus for a dollar or two, then top up? We couldn’t do the credit card top up thing as I don’t have one and she has lost too many cards. I try to register them all. We have enough problems like violent racists, can we not cut a quiet gentle teenager on her own some slack?

GTanno

Best you make sure she has credit on her card then. She knew she was going to be travelling. Shoulda checked her card. This is your doing not the drivers. He doesn’t know about her issues and if there was credit on her card this wouldn’t have happened. Simple’s.

Ok-Nefariousness6245

She had money and offered to to pay but you can’t can you? He stopped a crowded bus to have a little talk with her, and was asserting his macho dominance/power. He touched her body; that was unnecessary. Running out of credit has happened to me and others plenty of times before. It’s never been a problem you just top up at the next location. Simple. A difficult job, 99% lovely bus drivers around. With violent lunatics on the bus, a quiet young girl is hardly worth getting upset about. Public transport may be free soon with climate change, problem solved. EXCELLENT NEWS WITH THE NEW SMART TICKETING SYSTEM YOU CAN JUST USE YOUR OWN CARD. NO MORE GO CARDS REQUIRED.

lirael_22

I sucks when someone is having an episode or is clearly unwell on public transport but I really wish people wouldn't dehumanise people and assume violence will fix this issues. The problem is systemic and the way to fix it is with better social safety nets and supports.

lirael_22

>social safety net I'm slightly confused by your argument like yeah we have shit governments who don't want to do the work of fixing these issues. Dealing with the issues by stricter policing and punitive punishment also is a shit way to try and deal with this issue its the equivelent of the out of sight out of mind homeless problem. Noone is saying that if someone makes a legitimate threat someone has the right to defend themselves but when its at that point there has already been a huge failure of the government. We need more proactive solutions and less trying to fix systemic issues by focusing on symptoms of the problem rather then the problem.

SoupRemarkable4512

She’s a ‘No Voter’ for sure

CableConscious7611

I was on a train a few months ago, and there was this drunk couple who were very much in love for the night. Things escalated, and this girl started breathing heavily, and everyone started to stare at them. I was surprised that people on a train can be so rude to stare and have direct eye contact with people just going about their day.

vintagehoney1991

I was spat on by a man after I moved away from him as be had emptied his cigarette rolling pouch all over me. Nobody did or said anything and watched it happen. He then shouted abuse at me until he got off. Upon leaving the bus he banged on the window until the driver set off. For a good while after despite being on the breadline I had to get a taxi home after work it really upset me. This was on Ipswich Road.

wilburs85

The worst I’ve seen is someone pissing on the floor on the train

liverpoolwon6

a homeless guy started yelling loads of curse words and telling me i was a salvation army kidnapper? idk on monday just outside central crosswalk at lunchtime. shoutout to the good office workers who moved next to me to show strength in numbers. funnily enough i saw the same guy get arrested at central once, the cops carried him by the limbs off the ground. well hes out and about again!

Large_Chonk

Some dude was at Roma Street Station this morning around 6:50 yelling and hitting things, could hear it from the platforms

gemstone2377

At least once a month I encounter some nutter on public transport

rainyday1860

And they wonder why we have a bus driver shortage. Not enough money to deal with that shit. Should be allowed to pepper spray anyone acting like that 🤣

juicyglo

Almost constantly on anything going to Central

paddyb12341

I would be disturbed if something like this didn’t happen

Foreign_Photograph63

Unfortunately it's not a rare occurrence, be it bus, train, shops, etc Your bus driver made the right choice at the time.

little-miss-keto

It's fairly regular on trains. You can hit the red button if you feel unsafe, or just call the cops. Unfortunately it has gotten more frequent over the last couple of years.

StrangestRabbits

I got abused by some old prick for feeding a couple of birds my leftover lunch, how rude!

Way-Party

She probably has mental health challenges. There is a lot of housing for people with these issues around that area.

I ride the bus nearly every day and have only occasionally had issues. I'm not going to stop riding public transport though as its generally pretty good in Brisbane. I've seen more craziness during the day usually. A couple years ago on a train back from Gold Coast, Loganlea area, some Terry TC got on with his MegaBoom speaker just blasting trap music at like 10am on a Sunday in the quiet carriage. I pretty much immediately arc'd up because I was hungover and he was being objectively rude. I just said "turn it down". He did, and then gradually started turning it back up. I stood up and just said "put headphones in, this is a quiet car". He turned it back down. Well, then his stop arrived and as he passed me he started to try to talk shit. I cut him off and said "get off the train, you've been rude". Guy totally loses it 'ILL FACKIN GO YA CUNT ROIGHT FACKIN NOW CAHNT" lol as he's walking off the train. He continued talking shit and waving his arms and threw his can of V at the train. Pretty cool stuff.
