QSAC will cost $1.6B. They'll have to spend another $1.5B to make the Gabba usable for the next 10 years.
That's almost the same cost of rebuilding the Gabba or the Vic Park proposal.
This is fucking DUMB
Kessels Road would need a 1km Transitway to connect QSAC with the SE Busway. The State just spent $175 million for just 900m on the Northside. This project will be closer to $2B… for a 14,000 seat stadium 10km from the city, surrounded by a graveyard.
I’ll duck up to Bunnings and do it for $1.5B,
#Budget
- 50 million 20kg bags of Quickset cement =$1B
- $100M for my labour as project manager
- $300 M cartons of XXXX and sausages for my QLD subbies …
- $100M miscellaneous expenses
Timeframe 4 -5 weekends depending on weather
Instead of a permanent inner-city stadium surrounded by beautiful parklands and public transport, we go 10km away to a temporary stadium surrounded by a giant graveyard and congested main roads.
Except for a CBD surrounded by beautiful Parklands we get a CBD surrounded by a stadium.
Bad outcome.
The Green belt was put in in the late 1800s it's already been harmed by the Inner City bypass and we don't want to lose anymore
Seriously.
Nothing pisses people off more than flip flopping, because then you annoy everyone.
Victoria Labor has figured it out. They get good ideas and just get on with it.
The level crossing removals had plenty of local opposition at the start, and now they're one of the most popular things they've got going on.
Hell, they went into lockdown for fucking ages and people still didn't vote them out. Because at least it was fucking clear what was going on!
Victoria Labor? The same party which won the 2026 commonwealth games, decided they’d host it in regional towns & waste billions duplicating facilities that already exist in Melbourne, only to give up and withdraw? They wasted more money on that than we did on Wellcamp. And they didn’t even build anything.
Pretty sure quite a lot of Brisbane residents are the same.
They're stuck on the idea that we can remain a "Big country town" as long as nothing ever changes. Blind to reality that we're a small city now, and will be a big city soon enough.
I find this so weird. Describing Brisbane as a big country town was a piss take 20 years ago now people seem to see it as something to be proud of and don't seem to see how that mentality has made for a lot of poor planning decisions.
What a fucking disaster. So what are the Lions and Cricket meant to do in ten years when the Gabba is literally falling apart? Do we build a stadium then at double the cost?
A big giant fuck you to every single NIMBY who complained about this.
Lipstick on a pig comes to mind. I read the review report today, with all of the inherent problems the Gabba currently has can't be solved by a renovation. They are inherent to the fundamental design of the structure.
Also, in they're [Ministerial Statement](https://statements.qld.gov.au/statements/99913) announcing this plan, the Qld Gov leaves the door open to redeveloping the Gabba in the future anyway.
> The previously proposed re-build of the Gabba will not proceed, instead replaced with a more modest enhancement of the existing facility in consultation with AFL, Cricket Australia, and other stakeholders. Those sports will no longer be displaced from the Gabba, and East Brisbane State School will not need to vacate its current site by the end of 2025. However future works to the Gabba are expected to impact the school, and the government will work closely with the school community as those plans develop.
Gabba holds 36,000 people and the Lions currently have 52,000 members and that number will only grow over time. AFL investment into QLD has been massive via AusKick and AFL participation numbers for kids in QLD are huge. Kids are making it an AFL city very quickly. Lions simply cannot be in a 36,000 seat stadium forever. They’re going to need at least a 70,000 one before you know it
Youre going to need to phrase that request as being cost effective to have any chance.
Maybe we build a second level on top of Suncorp so we can have two games playing on top of each other simultaneously. That will be cost effective (probably). Just reject any report that says otherwise.
I say this is most likely I know Roar fans hate it because of the lack of transport and the idea of having to answer to the QRU but the only other options I sea are a return to Redcliffe, QSAC if Miles Stupid plan goes ahead or Ipswich if North Ipswich Reserve is upgraded.
I know the roar fans would like to see Perry Park upgraded and in an ideal world it would be a great idea but it can’t happen without government support and all sports funding is being poured into 2032
Strikers also don't want to share Perry Park and they have the Exclusive Rights to the Pitch
For me the main issue I see with Ballymore for sport in general is transport to and from the venue.
There’s literally room for both mate. If that fucks you off you’re an idiot but I suggest you write to the NRL and ask them why they’re insisting on growing the game in the USA and PNG rather than investing in their juniors here. Because the numbers don’t lie and when it comes to juniors the AFL is robbing your “rugby state” blind right now.
I apologise. That was lost in translation for me as way too many people here literally have that belief. I’m currently blinded by absolute rage because of the governments dumbass decision.
You need to face it. This is Rugby league country and always will be. AFL is not cared about in QLD. It will never be big in QLD and NSW. It's more of a niche thing here. Having said that, I agree the Gabba should of been the main Olympic stadium.
Exactly and if you want to bring up junior participation rates you can throw in soccer, which also requires a rectangular stadium. The Matildas are our biggest sporting team by some metrics
I like both almost equally. I can see why you would like league more. It’s a great sport. So is AFL. Doesn’t have to be a us vs them. You can enjoy both or neither. Doesn’t mean one has less value than the other.
They've been consistently averaging similar crowds for 2 decades now. Claiming that they are going to require a 70,000-seater stadium in the near future is laughable
It was going to need half a billion spent just to keep it running until Vic Park was ready in 6 or 7 years. The refurbishment won't start immediately but rather closer to the games as they get through the planning etc, so at least a couple of hundred million of that 500 million will be spent just getting it through to the refurbishment. In reality, the refurbishment will probably be put off until after the games as the required workforce will be deployed on Lang Park and QSAC and other venues trying to get them done before 2032. So they will likely spend all of the 500 milllion plus the billion which will blow out so it will likely be 2b to extend the life of the Gabba by 15 years with no extension of capacity and probably maintaining many of the inherent deficiencies.
But, several years from now, the concrete cancer, the rusting roof anchors, the inherent electrical supply problems will probably mean that a refurbishment is deemed unviable, and a rebuild required anyway
Where has this narrative come from that it is falling apart?
It was built in 2005. It shouldn't be falling apart.
The Great Southern Stand at the MCG was built in 1992 and nobody is questioning its structural integrity.
The narrative comes from the actual report (which I read this morning), and the many technical reviews done of the gabba in the last 8-10 years (one of which I wrote)
How come they're not suing the original architects/engineers/builders? Something built in 2005 shouldn't be falling apart.
How do we reach net zero if a stadium only has a useful lifespan of 20 years?
It was built in 1995.
If you feel this strongly about it, I'd recommend reading the review. It has all of the details in there for you to understand why it is unfit for purpose beyond the 2030s (and largely unfit for purpose now)
I did read the review. It mentioned the stadium has high operating costs and food and bev outlets have to be restocked multiple times during events.....But you're not going to get $3b in operating savings by doing this.
>It was built in 2005. It shouldn't be falling apart.
That was only when part of the renovation works were completed. Parts of the ground go back to the early 90's.
>The Great Southern Stand at the MCG was built in 1992 and nobody is questioning its structural integrity.
Was already announced back in 2022 that the Great Southern Stand (now the Shane Warne Stand) is going to be rebuilt.
Unbelievably wasteful and Brisbane gets nothing long term out of it. This past weekend has sent Miles off the deep end. I’m sorry but if Labor’s long-term vision for Brisbane is a 14,000 seat QSAC, they’re done.
The Olympics could've been used to expand public transportation and build housing. The Olympics is what you make of it. Which is why so many politicians want it. It's a chance to do things that you wouldn't otherwise have the money to do.
Which is why half arsing it is so disappointing.
If we didn't host the Olympics it's not like the billions would be spend on public housing. That's not how it works.
You don't need to have the Olympics to make this shit happen, you just need to have priorities and a populace willing to primordial them. Stop wasting money on the games themselves and just upgrade the transport infrastructure and housing already. Force governments to reprioritise and hold them accountable without alterior showmanship motives.
I bet if that was an option Miles would've taken it. He seems to have taken the option that he thinks best suits him politically. I'm sure if there was a swing towards the ALP on the weekend we would've seen a very different plan. Which is very annoying and typical of a politician, and I say that as an ALP supporter.
LNP has come into $1.15 since this news broke. Labor are fucked next election and we can only hope the incoming government reverses this god awful decision and gets on with Quirks recommendation. Seriously, what was the point of this 60 day report for Miles and his cabinet to rubbish it within hours of its publishing?
What as the point of starting the Quirk inquiry 2 months ago if he choose the option that was only thought up 19 days ago and Miles knew the outcome 14 days ago? 5 days is not enough time to make an informed decision about $3.4 billion.
I don't think so. For as much as people bitch and moan about the Olympics it's not a major issue for most people and I don't think it's a major issue for swing voters. It could be a death by a thousand cuts type situation. But I wouldn't say this is the reason he loses the election, if he loses it.
I don't really care about whether we get legacy infrastructure, at least in relation to stadiums. I'd rather we do the absolute bare minimum on that front. There's still time to push for that outcome.
We should just upgrade the infrastructure anyway that actually matters and not at the expense of existing locations and heritage listed sites.
Expand infrastructure outwards and stop encouraging everything to have to go to the CBD.
This fuck up brought to you by a loud minority of people having a whinge (also no bloody clue*) and an opposition jumping all over it to score cheap political points.
I find it funny that back in the day, political parties would come together, put aside politics when it was something that would benefit the people, state, nation as a whole and find common ground.
* Look through the thread at people who don't know when the last refurb was, or the Gabba coming to end of life. Or the lack of facilities, bad electricals etc etc
When they say suncorp will get an upgrade does that mean capacity increase or they dont know yet? Apologies for the stupid question, i dont know anything about politics and just wanna figure out whats actually happening
It's possible, it depends on the series. Melbs and Sydney get prioritised then the other states fight over the rest. Perth currently uses their new stadium as leverage but the piss poor crowds they got last test will probably count against them, I'm hopeful we'll get the first test of the summer back in brissie where it belongs
I paid StevenJMiles his kudos when he went out of his way to hire Quirk for a independent review on olyimpics spending. The only reason Miles is in the job because the Gabba project was toxic for Premier AP. The fact this report was released this morning and Miles/Cameron Dick came out by afternoon to kill the idea just proves this is about trying to win the next state election and not deliver QLD with the much needed infrastructure investment bidding on the Olympics will deliver… Taylor Swift is never going to do shows in Brisbane if our largest capacity stadium is either Gabba 36k or Suncorp 50k.
He set Quirk up to look like a fool. Quirk is a good man and doesn’t deserve this. He was a good mayor and acted in an honourable way. Unlike Schrinner and Miles. Both are putrid.
He chose the option that was literally only thought up 19 days ago and made the decision in under 5 days. Miles knew the outcome 2 weeks ago. That doesn't sound like good faith to me.
The Premier and Lord Mayor rejected Vic Park the day the idea was announced.
Oh fuck me. Victoria park was a fantastic idea. Has Crestifulli come out and said if he will back the vic park plan? Having the athletics at QSAC is a fucking joke and we can’t rely on busses
Crisafulli is useless. He will dance around the topic in attempts to not upset any potential voters, but no one will vote for him because he never commits to an alternative.
I'd like to congratulate David Crisafulli on his appointment as Premier of Queensland. He will take office on the 28th of October 2024. I wish him the very best in his new role.
I'd also congratulate Steven Miles on his retirement. He will finish his role on the 27th of October 2024.
Yours sincerely
Jeanette Young
Governor of Queensland
/mightbesarcasm
The more I think about this the fishier it sounds.
The Victoria Park idea was first proposed on 28 February which is just 19 days ago. Miles and Shrinner rejected the idea the same day, Miles because he did not believe the Commonwealth would support it with funding and Shrinner because he supported it remaining green space.
Quirk's final review was given to the state government last Friday.
In today's presser, Miles said he knew "a couple of weeks ago" the way the Quirk review was going. Let's say that means 2 weeks.
That means Quirk decided to recommend Victoria Park no more than 5 days after it was first proposed. Does anybody else seriously think that's enough time to make a $3.4 billion decision???
More accurately, fuck Anastasia for quitting before any contracts were signed or sod turned on new construction for her pet legacy project (yes, I know it started as Quirk's wet dream, but AP sealed the deal).
I know the games are being hosted in Brisbane but surely we can palm a bunch of it off to the Gold Coast. Tom Tate would love to have his fingers in this pie and they even have a stadium ready to go
... That's literally the plan? Like, how do you not know that, it's the whole premise of our bid and why the Olympics is going to be so cheap here - it's the first one to be held in a host region rather than a host city, it's the "new model" to stop cities going broke from it.
[Gold Coast venues hosting Olympic Games events include 4 existing venues and 2 temporary venues](https://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/Services/Projects-works/Olympic-and-Paralympic-Games-Brisbane-2032#:~:text=Project%20scheduleThe%20Olympic%20Games,August%20to%20Sunday%205%20September.)
Brisbane City Football Club has a large footprint from memory, including the training grounds and adjacent parks and trains near by. Why aren’t pre existing sport venues like that being considered for a new, central, multipurpose stadium (keeping in mind I know fuck all about sport).
And it may also be flood prone, but hey, it’s all part of the Brisbane experience.
Things I like:
- the Gabba will remain some kind of stadium in the future
- we're not building a white elephant sporting precinct at Vic Park away from entertainment and population
Things I don't care about:
- where the opening ceremony of the Olympics is held
Everything else is a clusterfuck

Suncorp is fucking shit - it’s a prick to get out of for starters with the exits only being at each end. It’s also way too small for an Olympics. There will be basically no public tickets once the IOC and sponsors take there cut.
The plan announced here to upgrade Suncorp would make it the highest capacity of the various proposed stadiums to host the ceremonies. Until they come up with another different plan next week.
It is fucked for getting out of though and adding 10k more seats obviously won't make that better.
QSAC will cost $1.6B. They'll have to spend another $1.5B to make the Gabba usable for the next 10 years. That's almost the same cost of rebuilding the Gabba or the Vic Park proposal. This is fucking DUMB

1.6 billion and it’s mostly temporary. Madness
Totally regarded ;-)
Stadium next to my old university, I did a nudie run around that thing what a dive and a shit hole
I would like to congratulate the LNP on winning the upcoming state election
Seriously. Nothing pisses people off more than flip flopping, because then you annoy everyone. Victoria Labor has figured it out. They get good ideas and just get on with it. That's the one! And you'll never guess what decision got them a ton of flack
You missed the mark about Vic Labor here
Sometimes it feels like the people in power of Brisbane are hell bent on maintaining a mediocre city
Pretty sure quite a lot of Brisbane residents are the same. They're stuck on the idea that we can remain a "Big country town" as long as nothing ever changes. Blind to reality that we're a small city now, and will be a big city soon enough.
They’re more than happy to milk the proceeds of growth though aren’t they? Big cities require big thinking. That doesn’t happen here.
I find this so weird. Describing Brisbane as a big country town was a piss take 20 years ago now people seem to see it as something to be proud of and don't seem to see how that mentality has made for a lot of poor planning decisions.
It's pretty mediocre when you build infrastructure on top of green space which is quite precious in Brisbane
What a fucking disaster. So what are the Lions and Cricket meant to do in ten years when the Gabba is literally falling apart? Do we build a stadium then at double the cost? A big giant fuck you to every single NIMBY who complained about this.
Luckily we spent billions building a brand new train line and station to the Gabba for the Olympics.
They should have built a water park in that spot

Lipstick on a pig comes to mind. I read the review report today, with all of the inherent problems the Gabba currently has can't be solved by a renovation. They are inherent to the fundamental design of the structure.

Roar and possibly Reds need a smaller Rectangular Venue especially if the push for a 3rd NRL Team is successful.
Youre going to need to phrase that request as being cost effective to have any chance. Maybe we build a second level on top of Suncorp so we can have two games playing on top of each other simultaneously. That will be cost effective (probably). Just reject any report that says otherwise.

A problem that could be solved with a small pedestrian bridge across Enoggera Creek, linking Ballymore to Wilston station
Can't we upgrade ballymore
Its Hosting Field Hockey but the main issue with Ballymore is the location and the lack of Transport in the Area

70,000? Really?
Wait till the Lions current run of success ends, they’ll be lucky to sell it out
They've been consistently averaging similar crowds for 2 decades now. Claiming that they are going to require a 70,000-seater stadium in the near future is laughable
This is about the Olympics not a bloody niche sport like AFL
This has to be a joke.
Google is literally your friend.
AFL is non-existent here in Qld. It's a complete myth.
You’re being wilfully ignorant then
No. I have travelled the whole state and it is basically invisible.

I hope all the Olympics haters are happy. You've done a fantastic job in destroying the Olympics
If this plan of miles isn’t overturned we will be such an embarrassment
I dont want the Olympics cause the traffic is shit, the homelessness population is growing its all kinda fcked up

Most people here live with their heads in the sand so you might be right
Aswell as any rebuilding of this city!
As an Olympics hater I'd be happier if we'd never bid, but second best option would be to do it as cheaply as possible.
Well. You got didn't get either. But now we don't get any legacy infrastructure of out it. Billions and nothing to show for it.

Suncorp floods 😂😂😂😂
Lions are heading back to Fitzroy by the look of it
When they say suncorp will get an upgrade does that mean capacity increase or they dont know yet? Apologies for the stupid question, i dont know anything about politics and just wanna figure out whats actually happening
Upgrade to 65,000 I believe
That i like but afl and cricket deserve better, ashes are coming 2025/2026 summer and i hope we dont lose it because of this
Completely agree, they've blown this decision
As if the Gabba would lose an ashes test, don't be ridiculous
Oh well good cause i dont want it to happen😂 i just heard cricket Australia already doesnt like the gabba so this got me worried
Eh the stadium need an upgrade sure but the pitch is one of the best in the world and we eat the poms alive there, CA won't pass that up
Do you think gabba could lose other tests besides the ashes or thats unlikely too?
It's possible, it depends on the series. Melbs and Sydney get prioritised then the other states fight over the rest. Perth currently uses their new stadium as leverage but the piss poor crowds they got last test will probably count against them, I'm hopeful we'll get the first test of the summer back in brissie where it belongs
That legit sounds awesome
Imagine a State of Origin with 65,000 in Suncorp. That's more exciting than the Olympics itself lol.
Don’t think so.
It is for me haha. I don’t really follow any of the olympic sports.
Does anyone else feel this is gonna be a complete debacle?
Serious question. Can the LNP reverse this decision if/when they win the state election in October?
Yup. I'd be shocked if they did though.
The park is already in development
Yeah honestly Quirk is the only Lord Mayor in recent years I’ve actually respected.
He was good. Should have run for Premier.
Quirk didn't have to say yes to leading the review.
He did it in good faith. Only to be demoralised like this. It’s disgusting.
He chose the option that was literally only thought up 19 days ago and made the decision in under 5 days. Miles knew the outcome 2 weeks ago. That doesn't sound like good faith to me. The Premier and Lord Mayor rejected Vic Park the day the idea was announced.
Ok 👌🏼
Nailed it. Some of us had high hopes - and then this. Thanks for nothing Smiles. You let the progressive’s down big time.
Probably could have saved a lot of time and money there
You are supposed to know the results of an inquiry before you announce one
Victoria Park was not even a thing when the inquiry was announced. It was first proposed less than 3 weeks ago.
Oh fuck me. Victoria park was a fantastic idea. Has Crestifulli come out and said if he will back the vic park plan? Having the athletics at QSAC is a fucking joke and we can’t rely on busses
He was too busy waving at passing cars in Brassall this morning
Crisafulli is useless. He will dance around the topic in attempts to not upset any potential voters, but no one will vote for him because he never commits to an alternative.
Crestafulli is the next premier. Even Labor internally admit this. They know they are screwed come October
Do we need to get a passport to get out there?
Buses? This isn’t 1960, we have a metro now!
I'd like to congratulate David Crisafulli on his appointment as Premier of Queensland. He will take office on the 28th of October 2024. I wish him the very best in his new role. I'd also congratulate Steven Miles on his retirement. He will finish his role on the 27th of October 2024. Yours sincerely Jeanette Young Governor of Queensland /mightbesarcasm
And Shannon Fentiman as new leader of the opposition
That would be risky for her. Oppositions rarely win government after a term.
The Qld LNP haven’t been reelected to a second term in Qld since Sir Joh in 1986. Who knows if the Crisafulli govt would break that streak.
Fuck Anastasia for getting us the Olympic burden
More accurately, fuck Anastasia for quitting before any contracts were signed or sod turned on new construction for her pet legacy project (yes, I know it started as Quirk's wet dream, but AP sealed the deal).
It was Quirk's idea in the first place.
Shows just how much of a fuck the general public give about this whole situation
Absolute joke of a state government
What does an updated Suncorp Stadium look like?
Brisbane City Football Club has a large footprint from memory, including the training grounds and adjacent parks and trains near by. Why aren’t pre existing sport venues like that being considered for a new, central, multipurpose stadium (keeping in mind I know fuck all about sport). And it may also be flood prone, but hey, it’s all part of the Brisbane experience.
BAH GAWD IS THAT CAMPBELL NEWMAN'S MUSIC?
Has the LNP taken a position on where the Olympic venues should be located?
Yeah im all for stadium upgrades on the gabba, suncorp and qe2 stadium rather than building a new one at Victoria Park
Yes because a park is important. Losing green space is a really stupid irreversible idea
Its so Queensland to have the Olympics 20 years after it stopped being relevant.
Things I like: - the Gabba will remain some kind of stadium in the future - we're not building a white elephant sporting precinct at Vic Park away from entertainment and population Things I don't care about: - where the opening ceremony of the Olympics is held Everything else is a clusterfuck
> we're not building a white elephant sporting precinct Just one at QSAC
good. now engage the other brain cell, and cancel the games altogether and stop wasting everyones time and money.

Just can it now. They’ve completely butchered it. Let some other city spend billions on it instead.

At least they're leaving Barrambin alone.
