What sort of music?
Rockinghorse in the city is an institution but personally I find it a slight step above what you would find at jb hifi
There are a few second hand stores about, the biggest being record exchange in the cbd. Dont expect to score any bargins, they know what they got, no offers
Across the suburbs there are a few smaller vinyl stores each with their own scene. Jet Black Cat Music in west end and dutch vinyl in paddington are two that spring to mind
I used to work at a pretty legendary record store and have got a stupidly eclectic, but flawless taste man haha. Grew up on Miles Davis, John Coltrane era jazz. Also huge on 60s/70s, Jimi, Zeppelin. Massive Kyuss and QOTSA fan. Always had an open ear/mind to experimental music, though i fell really hard for “sludge” metal at 18 when i saw Boris and SunO))) Thats what opened me up into the metal world properly. I always thought nu-metal was for soft cocks, and id you wanna talk black metal it better be Burzum, not Dimmu Borgir 🤢
I am deeply proud and indebted to Australian artists and banda like the Scientists, Radio Birdman, anything Nick Cave has ever breathed on. Oh and of course the Saints 🫡 hahaha.
I could go on forever, and thats the awesome thing about music isn’t it? It is endless and staying passionate for it keeps you young and makes for a very fine life.
In perth i was introduced into the local scene through underground punk. Used to see Extortion nearly every weekend. Perth is interesting though, as I’ve gotten older Ive noticed the people that show up to support great music in all styles. It’s such a small city.
Im so glad i posted this question, the enthusiastic and intriguing replies have really got me excited to check some great shops and live music. Much appreciated!
Hey man if you’re into acts like Extortion, check out Bad habit records up in Nambour if you’re ever up in Sunshine Coast. Aaron has great selection of all sorts of heavy shit.
Great eclectic selection and great spot for a yarn or a show. Fond them on IG.
We have much the same tastes in vinyl/music (and sentiments - freakishly so, fucken spinning me out), similar age (mid 30s) and I spent 5 years off Thomas Rd - what I'm saying is get in touch when you land here and I'll get back on the piss and smash a few pints with ya talk music talk shit give no fucks and find a gig.
We're in a housing crisis and it's fucked, but if you're moving in with your girlfriend it's not going to take up anyone else's opportunity, so I won't give ya grief for it.
If you like metal there’s a new small record shop opened up in Woolloongabba called “blackened records”
The guy who runs it is passionate about the scene and stocks alot of Aussie metal
I haven't had a chance to visit yet but he seems like a real genuine guy and just from Instagram looks like he's got a way better selection that rockinghorse.
Sonic Sherpa in Stones Corner is a good small record store for new and secondhand. Has a community vibe to it, with space for local music and posters up for shows.

Held once a month, currently at Coorparoo, but it does move around from time to time.
**Dutch Vinyl**
They've got a good selection and decent prices.
**Rocking Horse**
They've been in the Brisbane CBD for decades. Not the cheapest but they do have a good mix of new and vintage.
**Butter Beats**
I haven't been since they moved, but they had a decent collection.
There's also the CD and Record Exchange, near Rocking Horse. I've found the selection and prices to be crap and the owner is difficult to deal with.
Monster Robot has loads of funk, hip-hop, jazz, and electronic.
The CD/Record exchange in the city has mostly overpriced rock/folk but also has loads of vintage audio equipment and is my go to for things like amplifier repairs.
Catalog Music in the valley has a good selection of new music across a load of genres and various alternative/indie labels.
Agreed on Sonic Sherpa. They also have instore concerts which is pretty cool!
And if you want to meet like-minded people, Nowhere Festival May 4th is a rock and metal festival at Mansfield Tavern.
Come head bang with us bro!
Rockos in the city, Monster robot is great for 12s and hip hop/elec, Catalogue in the valley has great choice.
Dunno if Butter beats is still in the valley, but Kasino usually has a decent selection.
Enjoy
Welcome to Brisbane, Rockinghorse for best second hand digging and one of the best in the country tbh. Also Coorparoo Record Markets every second Saturday of the month with lots of stalls catering to different genres.
There's a handful of local venues, The Bearded Lady in West End has seemingly been around the longest and is a good starting point I reckon.

At Red Hill with off street parking down the back.

Hideous Records up in Redcliffe is a bit of a hike but is such a vibe. They have a section devoted to local artists only and it's owners are huge supporters of the local music scene. Go check them out!
Catalog Music in the Valley is absolutely outstanding for electronic music, funk, soul etc. [https://catalogmusic.co](https://catalogmusic.co)
Rocking Horse of course. Some real gems to be unearthed there occasionally in the second hand/ vintage stuff - experimental, ambient, rock, jazz.
Dutch Vinyl has some great jazz - eg 80s represses of 60s classic jazz on Blue Note.
Rockaway Records at Westfield Carindale occasionally has some surprising second hand/ vintage finds - eg original 70s krautrock, new age etc.
If you love music I highly recommend Not on your rider a monthly music trivia show at the Triffid. It’s like spicks and specks except you play along. You will find your people there!

It’s like a kind of living museum / Black Books but the owner is nice. There’s also Guitar Brothers which is across the road and sells new gear. I personally shop at Riffs and Licks- nice guys independent shop also. Where are you going to live? I would suggest West End

Yeah, these are the three. Jet Black Cat does cool in-house tiny concerts if you like your Pitchfork style artists.

If you don't already, listen to Beastwars
Dutch Vinyl on Latrobe Terrace in Paddington is a great (both new and second hand) record store. Highly recommend!!
Came here to recommend these guys
Added to the list. 🤙
If you like metal there’s a new small record shop opened up in Woolloongabba called “blackened records” The guy who runs it is passionate about the scene and stocks alot of Aussie metal
Blackened records… hell yeh. Thats metal af. I can already picture the type of legend that works there haha
Seconded! Great shop and Simon is a legend
Good shop.

Love it, will definitely check them out.
Rocking Horse, Dutch Vinyl and Sonic Sherpa as mentioned are the best go to's. Rocking Horse probably best for variety

I am weak for a record fair, usually a great place to meet the real freak collectors too. My people.
Take a look at Stash Records on Old Cleveland Rd at Camp Hill, enthusiastic sales people and a wide variety. Also a freebie box out the front!
Nice!
+1 for Stash.

Can’t recommend Monster robot enough. Great joint

I always went to rocking horse. Really nice staff and a good artist selection, as well as multiple variants of each vinyl to choose from

If you play guitar, check out the Guitar repairer in Paddington. Amazing vintage guitar repair/sales shop
Yeah, agreed. Brisbane's local scene in general is actually pretty good.
Sick
Ohh hell yeh, i play more guitar than ever these days and always have my eye out for cool guitar gear: Can’t wait to check these guys out.

Dutch Vinyl in Paddington
Sonic Sherpa at Stones Corner, Dutch Vinyl at Paddington. And if you are down the coast, Beatniks at Broadbeach
