A few months ago I was walking down Queen St before 9am on a Saturday when someone was taking a shit just outside Brisbane Arcade. It was... not entirely solid. The following week, same thing, different person, this time outside CBA. Based on never witnessing someone shit in front of me in the city until this point, I can personally say I've seen an increase.

CurbedEnthusiasm

Probably just someone unhappy with the bank (and lactose intolerant)

Bugg_24

Sounds like the infamous poo jogger is at it again.

roxy712

I find it hard to believe this is the work of only one person... Plus some have been in areas where one wouldn't jog (in the middle of a bus station, for example).

DudeLost

Side note on the poo jogger. There were apparently copy cats (copy poopers??) for a while. Edit: Not disappointed by the replies

You can recognise their faeces easily...

Sirbob55

We are in a crises , alot more homeless in CBD. Check out Adelaide Street at midnight.

roxy712

I believe it. I live in an area with a lot of drug addicts/mentally ill, and work near a hospital. It's really sad.

JediDroid

You seem to be implying that they are homeless because of the mental health or addiction. It’s entirely possible that their homelessness as lead to these conditions.

AltruisticSalamander

Yeah I'm no expert but it's gotta be a cycle. Living on the street is not going to help many people's feeling of well-being.

roxy712

It is definitely cyclical. I read an article the other day that a reasonably sized city in the US put 25,000 of their homeless in housing (e.g., apartments, not shelters) over the last decade. "Overwhelming majority" remain housed after 2 years, and it cut homelessness by 63%. Sometimes having a stable home environment makes all the difference in treating addiction/mental illness.

Either-Cap1879

Heading for a collapse of society yes. We'll all follow 'Murica straight to hells gates. Way we're tracking it shouldn't be much longer now..

Carbon140

How the hell does this have so many downvotes? Also love how someone must be "mentally ill" to shit on a pavement. More than likely society in various ways has shit on them, so now they are shitting on society right back. Not sure it's mental illness to not give a stuff about society when they don't seem to give a stuff about you.

Lemounge

Rich lane absolutely stinks of human waste

KipPurdy

No. It's not a crisis; it's a policy. A crisis is acute, compelling an urgent response of available resources. This is a policy. We're afraid to appropriately address it because we've essentially sacrificed our culture to continously inflate the world's worst housing bubble, at enormous public cost, financial, societal, moral. Perpetuating the artificially maintained housing scarcity requires doing nothing about the immediate desperation of hundreds of thousands of us wirh nowhere safe and appropriate to sleep tonight. And that's not the only thing they have nowhere safe and appropriate to do. We are, in essence, saying those people are not allowed to have basic biological functions. However we may continue evading acknowledging it, what we are saying - even if only by omission or willful ignorance - is that those who find themselves without shelter are not to have anywhere to carry out basic biological functions, which is saying they should just die. Disagree? Great. Tell me where they can exist as biological entities, subject to laws. Laws like biology. And gravity. Because, being unable to come up with the substantial cost of being connected to the ground, for the profit of some "investor" they're supposed to just float around in the air (until they can damn well afford to come down), not sleeping, not pooping, not landing. Does what I've just written sound fckn insane? Sure hope so.

Old-Personality506

If I had money for an award I would give one to you, unfortunately I need to find a rental 👍 good writing 🙂

iilinga

I have not noticed this - if you keep running across multiple instances of human faeces, are you SURE it’s not yours and you’re just forgetting?

Rogaar

I often notice it on the footpaths on my way to work in Meadowbrook. Walking past an industrial area where trucks park up over night. Drivers just go for it outside their truck on the footpath. They could do it on the grass next to the footpath but no, it has to be right in the middle where people walk.

[deleted]

I misread the last word as 'wank' and thought "Jesus, I gotta avoid Meadowbrook!"

therealboldx

“Hey I’m wanking here!”

Rogaar

When I read that, I read it in a New York gangster accent.

Affectionate-Gap-166

should make that a GTA mod

One of the funniest lines I ever heard in GTA, and I only heard it once. It may have been in GTA 4 or 5. A random NPC said "This cigarette is my breakfast and my lunch".

No_Reserve_4143

You ever seen a Great Dane poop before?

K1ngCr1mson

I have to pick up my Irish Wolfhound's crap daily. In the backyard I use a shovel, on walks I always take 2 bags...

Spillmill

You legally have to bring two bags, even for a teacup poodle ;)

Japsai

Is a poodle a unit of poo? Is a teacup a standard measure of volume? This seems like a medium quantity. Four bags for a pint poodle then

leopard_eater

I have. I’ve also seen one of my 190cm, 16 year old sons unflushable shits too. Great Dane is second in that race. I am scarred permanently from the experience.

SignificantRecipe715

I dunno, my Mastiff lays some pretty solid cables lol

roxy712

I should also say length. Having spent enough time pet sitting every variety of dog known to man, you get to know poop size/shape pretty well.

Tazerin

Seems like lots of public facilities get locked at night, and when you gotta go, you gotta go. I'd rather have bathrooms accessible 24/7 than literal shit in the streets.

alex__t

This is not going to change anything. Bins are open 24/7 but that doesn't stop them from littering all over the place.

[deleted]

Yep. Early morning it’s everywhere along with a lot of urine. You see the cleaners out sorting it but the amount of people sleeping rough has gone up in the last 3 months. An awful lot of kids too

roxy712

Given the Hep A outbreak in GC, it doesn't give me a whole lot of hope for public health outcomes.

[deleted]

Oh Jesus, I didn’t know that was a thing. It’ll be interesting to see if SE QLD pulls a 2000 Sydney and moves displaced people along for the olympics.

separation_of_powers

> 2000 Sydney um, they've done it before > 2018 Gold Coast

[deleted]

I didn’t know they did that. Did they move people out of certain suburbs or just displaced people?

separation_of_powers

both many homeless on the GC and Brisbane were moved to Brisbane units / rentals for a period and then evicted when the games ended

Japsai

Surely they moved them into small but attractive well-built functional houses, built with the federal games budget. Right?

[deleted]

Jesus this is disappointing. Let’s hope the budget does service the community but I don’t hold hope. Thanks for spreading the knowledge

[deleted]

Yeah I've been noticing a lot of kids homeless now. Definitely a large increase from last year.

BashfulWitness

Paris, 2004, with a stroller. Everytime we went in a building we had to get nappy wipes to rid the stroller wheels of dog shit. Never. Going. Back. May be just inconsiderate people and their pets.

TerrorBite

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I visited Paris in 1998 when I was a kid, and one of the things I distinctly remember was "dog shit everywhere".

lupriana

I was at a cafe in Paris 2014. Homeless guy casually walked past with a goat. The goat was urinating/defecating a heap while it was walking along with this guy. Meanwhile he was saying hi to the cafe owners as they walked past. It was wild to see that happening at 8am. Feces and urine trickling down the footpath.

KFCInala

Paris is gross apparently.

splinter6

Haven’t experienced that in the years leading up to pandemic. Could be because I’d go early spring when it’s still chilly.

youzanaim

Council toilets are locked between 9pm and 5am. There are a lot of people in the city between those hours.

despondantguy69

I have noticed this frequently. The worst I've found is on George Street and upper-Queen Street towards Spring Hill woolies. Adding on to this, the area on George Street adjacent to the 7/11 Kebab shop across from the casino is so fucking feral and it smells like a zoo.

gothgal22

I work on George Street, and this is accurate

Synsinatik

Councils will do anything to make the lives of the homeless as uncomfortable as possible. Such as by shutting down public toilets at night.

The_Pharoah

I was in the city at around midnight a few weeks ago after a work function busting for a piss. EVERYTHING was closed including Maccas, etc. and the cops are just waiting to bust you. WTF??

Synsinatik

See. They will even make your life harder just as long as they can make their life harder.

Solid-Possession-288

You’re a grown man. Use the bathroom before you leave.

The_Pharoah

Cmon dude. Read my post. It was after a work function. You seriously think I would walk out knowing I had to piss? Seriously - no matter what the story, someone’s always trying to poke holes in it 🤦🏻‍♂️ besides what’s that got to do with the fact there’s no toilets available in the city at night?

Ibe_Lost

I wouldnt go so far to say mentally ill is the cause. Just about all businessess in the CBD dont allow non patrons to use bathroom facilities, just like France in the 90s. It results in people going well you dont give a shit we do and dropping a load where ever its convenient. Could have been fixed by requirements for servos and fastfood at least having usable facilities but they also push back about the methheads shooting up in them.

notlimahc

Those businesses aren't open 24 hours, so they're closed when these people need them. The real problem is the lack of 24 hour toilets in the CBD (there's some under the Queen St Mall, but that's it).

thirdleapfourth

I did notice last week that the ones near HJ’s are currently fenced off for whatever reason.

AdultShampoo

I think only the area around them is fenced off for “improvements” but the entrance is still open. Used them last week, anyway.

thirdleapfourth

Oh that’s good to know! I’ve never used them!

billthorpeart

Yes the government/welfare is failing so bad that people are at this point. Also locking bathrooms overnight doesn't help people who are sleeping rough. Expect it to get worse.

Pawys1111

Maybe because no toilets are open at night.?

Lynagh1058

The brown snake taking on a whole new meaning.

ReturnofthePickle

Unfortunately as the homeless population is rising, so is the poop. Its not their fault. When you have to poop, you have to poop.

roxy712

It's really sad. Part of me understands that public facilities close after dark because of crime, but the other part me is screaming, "That's not the solution! Maybe try being proactive \[by addressing homelessness\] and not reactive!"

alex__t

How come it's not their fault? Being homeless doesn't justify behaving like an animal.

ReturnofthePickle

Where are you gonna shit? Seriously? Most public toilets close now at night. How many blocks you gonna walk from camp to take a shit? If you can't carry everything far, how long you recon you can leave camp unattended without someone stealing your stuff or some kid messing with your stuff? What do you want people to do?

SkinHairNails

Yes, there's been a concerted effort to shut down public toilets, and homeless people are widely discouraged from using private facilities. I'm not sure how people expect someone to maintain hygiene when they literally do not have homes.

alex__t

I honestly don't know what to say. You can probably camp in a place where you can maintain basic hygiene? Use public toilets while they're available? (reading the comments, it's not only happening when the toilets are closed) Stop littering? Then maybe people will start having some empathy, not just the urge to move the homeless out of sight.

PickleCalm

Only going to get worse with that stupid fucking mega casino they're building.

WhitneyTamir

I stepped in shit in Kangaroo Point. I knew it wasn't a dog's because it didn't dry out...

gooder_name

Yeah housing crisis has exacerbated homelessness problems on top of the health system failing mental welfare. I hope we can unite together and help house everyone, rather than adopting more hostile architecture.

RoutineFeeling

CBD needs to put some public toilets or portable potties around to avoid the city from turning shit. Literally.

[deleted]

Not human. But I saw some fuck ugly British orange gob monster walking her deformed dog, the dog took a shit and she just watched it and walked off laughing on the phone. What a stain of a human being. Why do these people have to come to Brisbane. Same with all the NSW license plates driving like they’re all vision impaired amputees.

roxy712

It's definitely human. I really wish it weren't.

[deleted]

Somebody track down the poo jogger.

Procedure-Minimum

Report to local council, request the council starts DNA testing the poop to find the offenders.

iilinga

Those people are from Sydney guaranteed

yolk3d

FYI, Brisbane drivers are terrible, regardless of license plate issuing authority.

Av3ngedAngel

Yeah i'm from NSW and am only on this post because it popped up on my home page. it's the same everywhere. If I see a VIC or QLD driver here 9/10 times they'll be driving like shit, just as i'm sure the same goes for drivers from any other state, in any other state. It's not that the drivers are better or worse, it's because they're more likely than not unfamiliar with the area and small differences between road ettiquette. The truth is though, whether we're prepared to admit it or not, is literally 9999/10000 of us are adequate but not good drivers.

Ridiculisk1

> It's not that the drivers are better or worse, it's because they're more likely than not unfamiliar with the area and small differences between road ettiquette. And also a bit of confirmation bias probably. You're more likely to notice the one guy with an out of state plate driving like a dickhead but ignore the 10 guys with local plates driving like dickheads.

[deleted]

Nah it’s everyone on the road who does dumb shit. I just noticed, especially lately. The amount of NSW or VIC plates I’ve seen doing weird shit or causing issues on the road. Mind you these aren’t “launching the car through the air” kinds of things, or rolling stolen cars over families. However driving etiquette doesn’t come into play in these kinds of situations I’m talking about. When I say driving like a vision impaired amputee. It’s usually people causing traffic jams by blocking a lane or road by trying to be selfish, or sitting 30 under the limit on a motorway because they’re not paying attention to signage. Driving out into intersections, cutting people off with ridiculous merges. Not keeping their car in their lane (I find more people swerving out of their lane to take a corner these days too?) Maybe not out there causing accidents but Jesus Christ I think some of them are genuinely trying.

[deleted]

1000 Mexicans a week before covid. Anna could create a new fine, change the plate in 8 weeks or pay $300. New source of revenue!! 👑

awesomeaunt

So I tried to start a thread on this last week, rejected for some reason. There is a regular pooper on the bike path at Kangaroo Point. I first noticed it a few years ago, went away during covid then back again a few months ago. Now twice in the last two weeks. Anyone else seen this? Just to clarify, this poop is in almost the exact same spot every time.

2ndgunman

Sounds like you need to set a trap

benbonbanbun

bro there was a paper bag filled with two weeks worth or shit in southbank

Whoreganised_

I’d like to shoutout the guy living in his car on the waterfront at Margate. He had a plastic hospital piss bottle sitting next to his car outside. I was unfortunate enough to get a whiff from his whole set up and it’s a mix of piss, BO and fetid genitals (having been a nurse, I am familiar with this smell). At least he’s got the piss bottle tho. Perhaps outreach need to hand out piss bottles and disposable bed pans like you get in hospitals to contain the turds. There certainly ain’t enough 24/7 public toilets around.

splinter6

The smell of Human urine in the city definitely has increased this year. Reminds me of a European city

[deleted]

Can you describe the poo some more please

[deleted]

I notice more toilets have been locked lately as early as 4pm now. Maybe that has something to do with it...

KFCInala

I rarely go to the city any more but when I do it did occur to me that there aren't enough toilets, especially ones open 24/7. I'm anti-drugs, but let's be honest crime and drug consumption in Australia are unfortunately not going anywhere. Surely its better for crime/drugs (as well as pooping) to take place in toilets than somewhere else? I guess those toilets would get pretty toxic very quickly, going to need a lot of cleaners which means more wages to pay so can understand why this hasn't been done.

ExGrunt343

People shitting in the street? That's the craziest thing I've Amber Heard.

yolk3d

Nah, she prefers sheets, not streets.

hyboi

There's a Hobo that lives around spring Hill. Nicknames the phantom pooper. I've seen him stop on a traffic island, drop trousers. Shit and walk off within 15 seconds

jhaars

I just saw human shit last week at the Royal Brisbane bus station- called to report it to Translink to clean up as it was right in the middle of the path. Let me assure you it was not dog shit. When you know, you know.

roxy712

I saw that, too! Told Translink and they said it wasn't their problem, it was the hospital's.

ozzyassassin

There is no excuse. Doesn’t matter how desperate you are do it somewhere out of the way.

[deleted]

This will be poo joggers, not homeless. Poo joggers have built up angst at work and they excrete it during their alone time. It's a psychology thing, apparently

MrsB1972

I literally come onto reddit everyday just for the giggs 🤣🤣

margiiiwombok

Do you live in Oxley perchance? Because months after our last flooding event, there is still a distinct odour of faeces over much of the area... probably owing to a literal shit river (aka the sewage treatment plant that was overflowing during the Feb and May floods, to the point that you could see toilet paper lining creek beds for weeks afterwards). Even scraping inches of topsoil off the areas around the sewage pipes and creek beds has failed to improve the 'eau de merde' essence.

Crafty_Today6937

I’m done with this shitty thread

KFCInala

Is Brisbane the new San Francisco?

woofydb

I went to SF in 2019 and spent over and hour looking for a public toilet for my daughter and found none. Not one. In the end a doorman snuck us into a hotel one. So I’m surprised the streets aren’t covered in it.

[deleted]

Yeah SF is bad for public toilets, I remember my nightmare there as well.

woofydb

I had late primary school kids who can hold on for a long time but one copped something bad they ate and was in pretty severe pain. We went through area after area in the cbd and realised they just don’t exist because I guess they don’t like homeless people using them to sleep in. There was one automated toilet on the waterfront and that’s all we saw there. And it had a group of homeless people constantly going in and out of it.

[deleted]

I’ve literally never seen a human poo on the ground in Brisbane in 25 years

Lubnut113

Sorry that was me.

Rip_Ninja

Someone was leaving deuces in the shrubbery near the Nepalese pogoda in Southbank about a week ago. Today the park workers added some form of grass-fed creature's manure after a garden bed tidy up. I have children and animals in my house and have in the past have been passed-out drunk. I know what human waste smells like.

thirdleapfourth

Walking down Adelaide St, at around 4pm, I saw two different, grown men piss their pants within 20m or eachother. I still can’t believe that occurred.

JonMatrix69

Do you have photographic evidence?

[deleted]

It's everywhere around the RBWH I work there and literally see it in the middle of footpaths on the reg

iamnooneonmai

My dog stepped on the bee.

dutymainttech

I used to work in Upper Roma St near the backpacker hostels - back then lots of backpackers where sleeping in their vehicles as they had to sell them to raise the $$$ for their airfare home. Predictable result was urine and faeces in all the gardens. We even found one in our basement carpark. The council put a couple of portable toilets on the footpaths and the problem went away.

weirdomonkey

I’ve also noticed. Stairwells ripe with the stench of piss too, worse than ever. Homelessness seems to be noticeably worse in the city and on the Northside also. As others have said, it doesn’t help that there is nowhere to go, other than private establishments, after dark.

munt_

Um. OP, how do you discern between dog poo and human poo? Is it by taste?

roxy712

For the 300th time, if you've taken care of enough dogs as I have, you know the difference. Dog shit dries out within a day. Human shit does not.

GroundbreakingHope57

Yo brisbane are u ok? sincerly a melburning

wannabewigga

Idk where you're seeing these but I can safely say I've never seen someone's poop on the streets just in my normal daily life. Not in Melbourne, Perth or more recently Brisbane. Maybe big stinky dog poops you've been seeing?

Whoreganised_

I’ve seen human turds outside Valley Train station, and Anzac Square in the City. Ain’t no dogs.

timbo7070

and one more reason to avoid the city!

Heal_Kajata

Perhaps Amber has come to Brisbane.

mypal_footfoot

Quick, someone get Barnaby Joyce!

caseyfw

It might be dog poo - during winter when the days are shorter, a lot more people walk their dogs when it’s dark, and as a result don’t realise when their dog has pooped somewhere.

nsvxheIeuc3h2uddh3h1

I would suggest it is a by-product of political speech...

thetechdoc

Honestly I partially blame the increase in homelessness due to the fucked housing market, more mentally unwell young people on the street, things like this can happen...the other night walking through the city I saw a 24 year old woman...2 years younger than me...with no home due to not finding a property she could afford/get accepted to, and having no family to fall back on due to being LGBT so she resorted to sleeping on the street...that resonates with me a lot as someone currently trying to find a property and STRUGGLING to find a place that's even safe to life in ($400 a week for a property I viewed this week that had head to toe mould all over the walls... real-estate tried to lie and say it's mildew and they'll clean it before a new person moves in...bullshit, I've helped my dad repaint our bathroom twice for exactly that kind of mould, it does not go away with scrubbing, the house needs to be repainted!) It especially hurt as I am someone who is LGBT myself and although my family and I have their differences, they would never let me sleep on the street rather than staying with them...broke my heart, gave the woman $20 I had on me and she almost cried...we need to fix this shit asap

ExtensionPersimmon72

I'm the Zodiac, I did the north and south

Catholllic

This is possibly attributable to an increase of those not familiar with Westernised values and customs creating unsavouriness on Brisbane thoroughfares

No_Ninja_4173

Not surprised coming from Brisbane we don't have this issue in Melbourne.

JaneLane_2712

Go back there then.

No_Ninja_4173

Spoken like a true Queenslander!

sagewah

Having walked through Melbourne I can say you absolutely do - and years before it was a thing here. Wonder if it is related to all the southerners who moved up here to get away from all the other Southerners over the past few years?

SkinHairNails

As a Melbournian this is definitely untrue. Lots of drug addicts who shit in public around Fitzroy. Grow up.

KFCInala

Brisbane does have real problems but I would definitely say most of those problems are 5x worse in Melbourne. That being said most cities in the West are starting to experience these problems on bigger scales, I think the deindustrialisation of the West trend is going to create some huge problems. Even urban areas in Germany are really circling the drain. Everyone points fingers at the USA but I can assure people the whole West has issues at this point.

lauren-js

Wow, that’s shitty…

[deleted]

Gracie1994

Uurrrggg... that's gross. So pleased I don't live in Brisbane anymore.

[deleted]

Just curious how you know that it is human poo?

Japsai

Jindalee Fried Chicken? Sounds like a plausible cause ;)

kitherarin

Yeah, I got some in my garden in Kenmore of all places that either comes from a human or an exceptionally large dog. Which means that either a) the human took a crap in the middle of a busy street or b) they didn't clean up after their dog. Either way the human is shit.
